Making sure Newberg’s needy had warm
coats for the winter was, at first, just a dream.
In the end, a Sept. 24 coat drive coordinated by members of Zion
Lutheran Church provided about 140 coats, jackets and sweaters to
125 people.
“It was fun,” said Sharon Schaffer, chairwoman of Zion’s evangelism
committee. “It was hard work getting this thing together, but we had
a ball doing it.”
The idea, suggested nine or 10 months ago to the committee, was to
host an outreach event for the community, she said. Information was
passed on to schools in the district, Love INC (In the Name of
Christ) and in flyers that, for two months, went into food boxes at
Newberg F.I.S.H. (Friends In service to humanity).
Visitors to the coat drive told coordinators they had heard about
the drive from at least one of the organizations contacted, Schaffer
said. “We felt blessed we could reach out to these people.”
Before coats were distributed committee members sorted, many were
cleaned and then hung up. Although the coat drive did not begin
until 10 a.m., people had begun arriving by 9:15.
“This event is definitely a repeat for next year,” Schaffer said. |
