A May Day rite

The 1960s is the theme for the annual event at Newberg High School

Love bugs, bright blooming flowers and peace signs. The 1960s was the theme for the 2005 May Day celebration at Newberg High School and the students involved in its preparation played up the theme to the hilt.
Larry Hampton, NHS assistant principal, said the theme was great for staff members, because their age meant they knew all the songs and could sing along.
Hampton said few changes have been made in May Day activities since last year. One of the changes involves the Maypole. Traditionally, junior class couples danced around the pole, using varicolored ribbons to create designs on the May pole. This year, since fewer people signed up to participate, Hampton said the performance was opened to the entire court.
Another change involved scheduling. In the past, Hampton said the May Day performance and student dance was held on a Saturday. But dwindling attendance in the past few years prompted the May Day committee to move the performance and dance to Friday night.
“Over the last few years it’s been mainly parents of court kids and the people dancing (in the performance),” Hampton said. “It used to be a community event.”
The committee hoped the change would prompt better attendance.
This year NHS staff members have become involved with the performance and several shared the stage for The Hustle with NHS seniors Friday night.
“That’s kind of neat,” he said.
The event was a long-term tradition by the time Hampton attended NHS. Two couples from each class, and an additional two named king and queen, are selected each year by their peers to serve on the court.
