A life among the ages

A spry Loula Evans celebrates 100 years of living, remains optimistic

Loula Evans recently turned 100 and she’s definitely proud of her age-defying feat.
Where other older women are not so amused by a 100th birthday, Evans — a resident of Avamere in Newberg — said she thinks it’s a pretty big deal. She moved to Avamere in Newberg three months ago and previously lived on her own.
She lived in California including in Petaluma, Santa Rosa and San Francisco, where she remembers the earthquake of 1985.
“Things fell all around; I think we lost a whole set of dishes,” she said.
Loula grew up in a farming community. Her father was a carpenter; he built the dresser and hope chest which sit in her room at Avamere.
She met her husband, Noah Evans, at church. He was a sergeant in the Marines during World War II, but was stationed in the states. The couple spent several years at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Loula had both her son and daughter at home with a midwife, she said.
Her husband as well as her sisters have died, as have all brothers except Ivan, who is 89. Longevity does run in Loula’s family, however. Her parents lived into their 90s, she said.
But when asked about her secret to such a long life, she says she just doesn’t know.
Before she went to Avamere she said she didn’t take any medications, now she takes pills but she’s not sure what they are for.
“I think I’m pretty healthy”, she said while sitting in a reclining chair in her room.
Loula doesn’t eat anything special and never really exercised. Now she takes walking trips around the halls of the assisted living facility.
“I get out and take walks every day four or five times,” she said. “That’s exercise for 100!”
Loula likes to tat, embroider and when you mention gardening she perks up.
“I like to garden and play in the yard,” she said with a smile.
