Fifty grand will more than cover the cost of concrete for the foundations
for another affordable housing unit in Newberg.
The Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity was recently awarded a $25,000
challenge grant from the Ford Family Foundation of Roseburg. If Habitat can raise matching
funds, it will use the $50,000 to start work on a duplex.
Newberg Habitat has twice before received this grant from the foundation,
said Rick Rogers, executive director of the organization. Both times Habitat has been able
to raise the matching funds.
He anticipates nothing less this time around.
The community has always been very supportive, Rogers said.
Already Habitat has raised half of the $25,000 it needs to meet the match, Rogers
said, and a letter has been sent to those who have supported us in the past,
businesses, churches and individuals included.
Habitat has constructed seven houses in Newberg since 1994. The nonprofit
organization is currently working on a duplex on the corner of Third and Everest streets,
which will likely be mortgaged for about $70,000. Rogers said he expects it to be
completed by spring.
The money from the challenge grant will allow Habitat to purchase the
materials necessary to construct a second duplex on the same site. Good will:
Thats what it takes to build these homes, Rogers said.
Rogers estimated that while 75 percent of the materials are purchased for the
projects, the remaining 25 percent is donated. He said roofers, plumbers and electricians
often volunteer their services, as well as the supplies.
Thats not to say Habitat doesnt need any more help.
We can always use help on the building site, he said, adding that
its a great way to be directly involved. |
