War, impeachment and Watergate are just three subjects in which former U.S.
Senator Mark Hatfield has a unique historical perspective.
Hatfield will share his perceptions of these and myriad other controversial
subjects with the public this spring in a course titled Congressional-Presidential
Relations at George Fox University.
The class, beginning Jan. 14, will include a personal point-of-view of events
that occurred during his three decade long career in the United State Senate, as well as
stints as an Oregon governor and legislator.
The class, which is being called a perhaps once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity, will be open to the public.
Hatfield will address conflicts between the presidency and Congress. Instead
of reading from textbooks, students will read selected books about the events then meet to
hear Hatfield tell his version of them.
Hatfield will also be available for questions from students.
Hatfield is George Foxs Herbert Hoover Distinguished Professor. He
spent a half century in Oregon political life, including service as a legislator,
secretary of state, two-term governor, and five-term U.S. senator.
This will be the first time Hatfield has addressed the topics in a
semester-long course. The longtime Oregon senator joined the George Fox faculty in early
1997 after a 30-year career in the Senate. He will team teach the spring class with Mark
Hall, an associate professor of political science.
The basic idea behind the class is to look at conflicts between the
presidency and Congress during the time Sen. Hatfield was in office, Hall said.
Hatfield will discuss Watergate, the impeachment of presidents Richard Nixon
and Bill Clinton and judicial nominations, including the nominations of Haynsworth,
Carswell, Bork, Thomas and others.
In addition he will discuss Vietnam, the War Powers Act, Grenada, Gulf War I,
presidential leadership in major pieces of legislation and Congressional oversight of the
president including legislative vetoes.
The class has a limited enrollment and is a 16-week junior-senior level
course that meets from 2:15 to 5 p.m. A scholarship program for adults over 62 allows the
course to be taken either for audit or three credits for a $20 service fee. To register,
call 503-554-2213. |
