Despite a chilling rain, around 30 people gathered Tuesday evening
to conduct a candlelight vigil in memory of 3-year-old Glenn Edward
Berger Jr.
Friends and relatives of his mother, Carrie McGrew, and father,
Glenn Berger Sr., bowed their heads during a prayer led by David
Case, pastor of Newberg Christian Church, before releasing balloons
into the dark November sky.
The solemn memorial
was held in the parking lot of Olympic Bodyworks where Berger was
killed Nov. 14, accidentally run over by neighboring business owner
Scott Foushee when the boy darted out from behind a parked car.
“I just want to bring people together and help create some
closure,” said gym owner Paula Kroker. “A lot of people have been
affected by this.”
Berger was also remembered at a memorial service Nov. 18 at Newberg
Christian Church.
“It seems unreal,” McGrew said of her son’s death. “I’m just trying
to take one day at a time.”
McGrew, who works as a daycare director for Olympic BodyWorks, was
a witness to the death of her son. Case said Tuesday was the first
time she had returned to the scene of the accident.
But while McGrew and Berger Sr. struggle to cope with their loss,
McGrew said the hardest hit are their three remaining children.
“They’re traumatized,” she said. “It’s especially hard for his
brother Cody — they were best friends.”
Kroker has organized a memorial fund for the family at the Newberg
Bank of America, and is seeking donated items for a silent auction
to be held at noon Dec. 2 at Joan Austin Elementary School.
“I want to thank everyone in the community for their support,”
McGrew said Tuesday. “It’s been a real help.” |
