Newberg High School students opened their fall musical “Cinderella” this weekend, but don’t expect the cartoon version of magical love from childhood memories.
“If people think of it as a sweet and sugary Cinderella, it’s definitely not that,” said NHS drama teacher Drea Ferguson said. “The elements of romance are there because it is the same story, but we’ve taken a slightly different slant.”
The NHS production will be an adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical — this one set in the Renaissance period with lots of slapstick humor, termed “comedic-del-art.”
In modern times the traditional tale of a girl meeting the prince of her dreams and living happily-ever-after may seem a little archaic for the average teen-ager to swallow.
“We tried to take the soppiness out of it. ... With high school students I don’t think it would have made it through production if hadn’t given it a slant of its own,” Ferguson laughed. “The characters are loud and obnoxious and wonderful ... it’s definitely more comedic than romantic and it makes me howl every time I watch it, so that’s a good sign.”
The show opened Thursday night after a week of “an army of moms sewing like crazy” to ready the costumes, the director said.
The title role will be played by Beth Fuller on odd nights (tonight and Nov. 15) and by Sarah Anderson on even nights (Nov. 14 and 16).
The curtain opens at 7:30 p.m at Chehalem Valley Middle School, 403 W. Foothills Drive. Tickets are $7 general admission or $4 for seniors and students; admission for seniors is $1 on Nov. 14. Tickets may be purchased at the door or reserved by calling the NHS box office at 503-554-5305.
A portion of production profits will go toward a scholarship in memory of Jeremy Endicott and refreshment sales profits are being donated to feeding the needy this winter.
