There might have been more porch lights providing a beacon to
trick-or-treaters on Halloween night if not for a power outage that struck a portion of
the city.
A power failure in downtown Newberg occurred at 7:06 p.m. Halloween night,
according to Mark Fryburg, a spokesman for Portland General Electric.
Fryburg said at least one tree falling onto power lines caused the blackout.
The area was hit by periodic high winds late last week that wreaked havoc with trees
across the state.
Two utility crews restored the power in Newberg on Halloween night by 7:47
p.m. About 1,550 customers were affected, Fryburg said. It affected the center of
the city, including Hoover Park.
Newberg Food Mart, located at the corner of First and River streets, was one
business affected by the blackout.
Jenny Suh, the owner of the convenience store, said she didnt see it
happen, but reiterated that wind was likely the reason for tree branches hitting the power
lines.
The trees pulled down the electric wire, she said.
Suh said she closed her business for about an hour. But other than that, she
said, the outage didnt adversely affect the market. |
