Bob Hutchinson believes a good
way to help service personnel serving in Iraq and Afghanistan is to
lend aid to their families.
He’s partnering with Love INC (In the Name of Christ), a program
that serves as a clearinghouse for churches and agencies in the
Newberg area to help the needy, to create a Crisis Care Intervention
service for the families of Oregon soldiers serving in Iraq,
Afghanistan and other countries around the world.
The public is invited to the first meeting of the group at 2 p.m.
Monday at Chapters Books and Coffee, 701 E. First St. Introductions
will be made and the outline for the program will be provided by
Diane Gooding, Oregon National Guard state family program
coordinator.
Hutchinson said that people are supportive of the service personnel
who are working overseas. He felt helping to care for the needs of
the families who remain in the area was the best way to help service
people who are away from home.
The idea is to make service for the families available 24 hours per
day, seven days per week. Assistance can include a team of people
who can be enlisted for child care if someone needs a ride to the
hospital or if they need something fixed around the house.
“When (soldiers are sent to) combat they know there is someone that
will take care of their family,” Hutchinson said. “(They’ll know)
their families won’t have a crisis without someone there to care for
them.”
Hutchinson hopes the program will become a national model for
similar programs.
