Saturday, Sept. 27
Richard D. Mundinger
   Richard D. Mundinger of McMinnville died Sept. 24, 2003. He was 75.
   He was born Sept. 28, 1927, to Gustave and Violet (Bauer) Mundinger in Bertha, Minn. He was raised and attended school in Minnesota. He served in the Army from 1945 to 1946. On Feb. 18, 1950, he married Evelyn Bothman in St. Paul, Minn. He studied forestry at the University of Minnesota. After college he played for the Chicago Bears and then went to work in private industry. He went to work for U.S. Fish and Wildlife from 1955 to 1984.
   After several years he came to Portland and later to Sherwood, where he lived until 1994, when he retired and moved to McMinnville.
   He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg. He enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting and fishing, as well as traveling.
   Survivors include: wife Evelyn of McMinnville; son Todd Mundinger of Newberg; one brother and four sisters. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg with Pastor Norm Olson officiating. Interment is private.

Robert H. Schmidt
   Robert H. Schmidt of McMinnville died Sept. 18, 2003. He was 88.
   He was born June 18, 1915, to Ludwig and Elisabeth (Hinkel) Schmidt in Frankfurt, Germany. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1927 to New York City, where he graduated from high school in Brooklyn. He served in World War II in the Army and received a bachelor of arts from the University of Alabama. On July 19, 1940, he married Miriam Jette in Fall River, Mass. He worked for the Veterans Administration from 1945 to 1972, when he moved from Long Island, N.Y., to Dundee. He was a member of the Dundee United Methodist Church.
   According to his family he was instrumental in the development of Billick School Park in Dundee, where tennis courts bear his name. He was on the city council in Dundee and was involved in the senior center and masters swim team. He helped coach a youth soccer team for many years with his friend, John Fawcett, through the Chehalem Park and Recreation District.
   Two years after the death of his wife Miriam in 1988, he married Dolores (Jette) Desrosiers and moved to Connecticut to her home. After her death in 1996, he returned to Oregon, moving to the Hillside Retirement Community in 2001.
   He enjoyed tennis, parasailing, traveling, golf, skydiving (his first jump was at the age 85), and taking continuing education classes at George Fox University.
   Survivors include: brother Walter of Florida; sons, Steve of Salem, Kenneth of Virginia, Robert of Portland and Peter of Dundee; daughters, Elizabeth Nieten of Michigan and Miriam (Bunny) Hallyburton of Dayton; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   After private interment at Willamette National Cemetery a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 18 at Dundee United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life service will follow at Hillside Retirement Community.

Mary R. Park
   Newberg resident Mary R. Park died Sept. 19, 2003. She was 86.
   She was born July 29, 1917, in Davison, Mich., and lived in Newberg for 20 years. In 1941, she married Kenneth Park. She was a pastor’s wife and taught elementary school. She retired in 1977.
   Survivors include: husband Kenneth of Newberg; sons, James of Tucson, Ariz., David of Newberg and Jerry of Spokane, Wash.; brother Francis Chapman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Newberg Free Methodist Church.

Ardus M. Thomas
   Ardus May Thomas died Sept. 22, 2003, at a Beaverton care facility. She was 80.
   She was born July 6, 1923, to Emery and Elva (Parrish) Jones in Newberg.
   She was educated in the Newberg schools through high school. On Dec. 4, 1948, she married Wilbur Thomas in Reno and they made their home in Portland. For 30 years she worked at Continental Grain Company in Portland. When she retired she helped her husband run an accounting business. She lived in Portland until 2000, when she moved to Alterra Clare Bridge of Beaverton, a memory care residence.
   Survivors include: nieces, Linda Gramlich of Portland and Corinne Waterbury of Des Moines, Iowa; two great-nephews; a great-niece and two great-great nieces. She was preceded in death by husband, Wilbur, in May 1990.
   A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church in Portland with Dr. Rex Loy officiating.
   Private committal will be at Fernwood Cemetery, Newberg.

Wednesday, Sept. 24
Dwayne H. Campbell
   Former Newberg resident Dwayne H. Campbell of North Bonneville, Wash., died Sept. 20, 2003. He was 58.
   He was born May 10, 1945, to Harvey John and Dorothy Marie (Morse) Campbell in Denver. As a boy he moved to Idaho and after the first-grade moved to Newberg, where he attended George Fox College (now George Fox University).
   He lived in Vancouver, Wash., working for Crown Zellerbach for more than 36 years. On May 30, 2003, he married Marilyn Craig aboard a sternwheeler.
   He was a 12-year member of the Columbia River Camaro Club. He enjoyed pinball machines, cars and anything with wheels, as well as working with his hands, gardening, fishing, history, painting and photography. He also enjoyed traveling and listening to music from the ‘50s and ‘60s.
   Survivors include: wife, Marilyn of North Bonneville; daughters, Kim Lane of Vancouver, Wash., and Kati Doodley of Port Orchard, Wash.; stepdaughters, Ginger Barron of Vancouver, Tammy Lundgren of Studio City, Calif., and Karen Foulk of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; twin brother Dwight of Skamania, Wash.; brother Dale of Newberg; sister Dolores Martin of Cameroon, Africa, and Newberg; 12 grandchildren; two nieces and five nephews.
   He was preceded in death by daughter, Kristi Campbell-Leiby, in January 2003, and by his parents.
   A memorial reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at Gardner Chapel in Stevenson, Wash.

Saturday, Sept. 20
Ella M. McInnis
   Ella Mary McInnis of Newberg died Sept. 16, 2003, at Trinity Foster Care. She was 96.
   She was born July 12, 1907, to Anton and Hilda (Maki) Pekkola in Brantwood, Wisc. She was raised in North Dakota and moved in 1917, at the age of 10, to Carlton. At age 16 she went to work in Pendleton. She met Thomas McInnis in Pendleton and they were married on Dec. 28, 1925, in Vancouver, Wash. They lived in Lafayette until 1928 when they purchased a home in Newberg. She lived there until 1999 when she moved into a foster care home in Newberg.
   She was a member of the West Chehalem Friends Church in Newberg and was also part of the Rural Homemakers Club at the church for 70 years. She enjoyed gardening and her family said she was also a great cook. Most of her working years she was a cook at various restaurants in Newberg. She retired at the age of 70.
   Survivors include: sons, Don of Newberg and Al of Portland; brother Eli Pekkola of Carlton; sister Selma Hermans of Sweet Home; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Thomas, in 1972, sons, Tom, Wilbur and Eddie; daughter Mary Fisher; brothers, Enoch and Don Pekkola; and sister Vienna Dixon.
   A memorial service was held Friday at the Chapel of Macy and Son with interment at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Marcy Schaad
   Former Newberg resident Marcy Schaad of Rockaway Beach died Sept. 17, 2003. She was 57.
   She was born Sept. 16, 1946, to Delbert and Ida (Zonweiss) Dow in Portland. She graduated from Dayton High School in 1964 and attended George Fox College (now George Fox University), Asbury College and the Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University). She married Don Schaad on June 17, 1977, and they spent most of their married life in the Newberg area.
   She was an elementary school teacher in the Tigard area until 1992, except for a two-year period when she was a missionary in Indonesia under OMS International. In 1992, she started homeschooling three daughters. The family moved to Rockaway Beach in 2000.
   She enjoyed cooking, gardening, playing piano and singing. Family members said she was organized and involved with child evangelism in Newberg.
   Survivors include: husband Don of Rockaway Beach; daughters, Kelly McGrew of Newberg, Nicole Menard of Dundee, Mylinda, Alyssa and Roxanna, all of Rockaway Beach; father Delbert of Tillamook; sister Sheryl Byrd of Tillamook and seven grandchildren.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Newberg Friends Church.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Twin Rocks Friends Camp.


Wednesday, Sept. 17
Edward H. Gross
   Edward Henry Gross died Sept. 11, 2003, at his Newberg home. He was 69.
   He was born Jan. 23, 1934, to Fred and Zoa (Mahoney) Gross in Seneca, S.D. He grew up and completed high school in Seneca. He started driving a truck at an early age and after a time moved to Scotts Bluff, Neb. Later he worked for Pappas Trucking in Gering, Neb.
   On Jan. 23, 1975, he married Frances Gray in Cheyenne, Wyo., and started working for Dobbs Diesel Shop in Gering as a repairman. In 1985 the couple moved to Newberg where he worked for Quadco Trucking Company for 10 years until he had to quit due to illness.
   He enjoyed woodworking, computers, camping, fishing and spending time with his family.
   Survivors include: wife Frances of Newberg; sons, Walter and Mike, both of Sterling, Colo.; stepsons, Rodney and Milford Pekarek, both of Newberg, and Tim Pekarek of Dayton; daughters, Windy and Wilma Gross of Sterling; sisters, Zoa Burton and Lois Dobbs, both of Scotts Bluff, Neb., and Betty Whisenant of Tucson; eight grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
   A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) in the Newberg Seventh-day Adventist Church in Newberg with Pastor Tim Mayne officiating. Committal will follow at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

David L. Socia
   Former Newberg resident David Lee Socia of Netarts died Sept. 10, 2003. He was 50.
   He was born April 24, 1953, to Richard and Marion (Christian) Socia in Mt. Clemens, Mich. He was raised around the world as his father was in the Army.
   After graduating from Barstow High School in Barstow, Calif., he entered the U.S. Marine Corps for four years. After his discharge, he attended Lompac Junior College for two years. He moved to Newberg where he lived for eight years, then McMinnville for 10 years. He worked as a machinist. On March 28, 1985, he married Roxy Jackson in Reno. In 1995 he moved to Netarts and went to work at Hallco as a machinist.
   He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing and family gatherings.
   Survivors include: wife Roxy of Netarts; parents, Marion and Richard Socia of Newberg; daughters, Rhiannon Lenssen of Tigard, Angela Field of McMinnville and Brenda Holiday of Big Bear, Calif.; brother Steven of La Center, Wash.; sisters, Cynthia Cooper and Cherie Socia of Newberg; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Timothy, in 1994.
   A memorial service was held Monday at Chapel of Macy & Son in McMinnville. He was interred at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Shirlene Nagel
   Shirlene Nagel of Newberg died Sept. 3, 2003. She was 66.
She was born Dec. 24, 1936, to Josephine (Blume) and Walter Snyder in Tuskegee, Okla. She moved to Oregon in 1972 from California. She enjoyed camping, fishing and family gatherings.
   Survivors include: daughters, Debbie Walling of Salem, Vickie Fowler of Beaverton and Tina Bodle of Dundee; sons, Larry and Jimmy of Newberg; sisters, Darlene Nelson and Earlene Zarithes of Murrieta, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband, John, in 1993 and grandson, Cody Arana, in 2003.
   A private service was held Sept. 6 in Beaverton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kaiser Hospice.

Mary L. Burke
   Mary Louise Burke of McMinnville died Sept. 10, 2003. She was 56.
   She was born Jan. 26, 1947, in Taylorville, Ill., to Paul and Louise Manley. As a small child she moved to McMinnville with her family. She graduated from Dayton High School and on Dec. 9, 1967, she married Robert Burke in Newberg.
   She moved to Newberg and worked for Tektronixs for 22 years. She moved to Carlton and later to Woodburn. After retiring she moved to Kelso, Wash., for a short time and then to McMinnville. She enjoyed traveling and her grandchildren.
   Survivors include: sons, Jeff of Salem, John of Marysville, Wash., and Mike of Oregon; brothers, Walter Manley of Gates, Leo Manley of Carlton and Benginan Manley of Portland; sister Betty Jo Long of McMinnville and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband, Robert, in 1998.
A memorial service was held Tuesday at Macy and Son Funeral    Chapel with Pastor Leo Manley officiating. Interment was at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Saturday, Sept. 13
Paula R. McGanty
   Paula R. McGanty of Newberg died Sept. 9, 2003. She was 50.
She was born April 9, 1953, to Ivan and Helen (Rose) Pennington in Florence. She lived in several eastern Oregon and Idaho towns until moving to Lafayette in 1963. She attended school in the old Lafayette School House and McMinnville High School. Her family moved to Newberg, where she finished her last year of high school, graduating in 1971.
   She met her husband Tim McGanty in junior high school and they dated throughout high school. They were married May 19, 1972, at St. James Catholic Church in McMinnville. She lived in McMinnville until 1973, when she moved to Newberg.
   From 1991 to 1995 she worked for Chehalem Care Center in food service and also as an activity director. From 1995 until the time of her death, she worked for George Fox University in food service. She was a member of the St. Peters Catholic Church, enjoyed pugs, sewing, reading, trips to the beach and, her family said, making people smile.
   Survivors include: husband Tim of Newberg; son Christopher of Newberg; daughter Tina Moehnke of Banks; parents, Ivan and Helen of Newberg; brothers, Gary of Rochester, Wash., and Duane of Weiser, Idaho; and sister Carol Blanchard of Newberg.
   A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Saturday) at St. Peters Catholic Church in Newberg with Father Gregory Gage officiating. Interment will be held at St. James Catholic Cemetery.

Marvin V. Place
   Marvin Vernon Place of Newberg died Sept. 6, 2003. He was 64.
   He was born Feb. 18, 1939, to Fred and Dorothy (Hadedorn) in Denver. He worked as a moulder core maker at Western Foundry. He retired due to blindness in 1967. He enjoyed working on cars, listening to music and watching sports on TV.
   Survivors include: sons, Marvin of McMinnville, Brandon of Oregon, Vernon of Lafayette and Melvin of Dundee; daughter Mandy of Portland; brother Eugene of Cottage Grove; sisters, Joanne and Doris of Dayton and Lois of Gaston; and six grandchildren.
   A funeral service was held Thursday at the Newberg Church of Christ with committal following.

Mary S. Green
   Mary S. Green of Newberg died Sept. 8, 2003, at Providence Newberg Hospital following a decade of illnesses and frequent hospitalizations. She was 81.
   She was born to Leon and Agnes (Cleveland) Strickland on May 19, 1922, in Lockport, New York.
   After attending college she was a professor for 40 years. On May 17, 1946, she married William Green in East Cleveland, Ohio. She and her husband served at Bryan College, Taylor University, Malone College and George Fox University.
   She conducted math seminars for public school teachers throughout the Northwest, and served six years as a district representative on the Oregon Council of Teachers of Mathematics executive board. She also wrote a monthly column for the Oregon Mathematics Teacher, and received the TOTEM award in 1988 for service to the Mathematics Education Program of Oregon.
   Survivors include: husband William of Newberg; son David of Portland; sister Leona Morrill of Fort Myers, Fla.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Ellenor, and her son, Don, in 1982.
   A memorial service was held Friday in the Newberg Friends Church with Pastor Mahlon Macy and Doctor Wayne Roberts officiating. Committal was private at Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Lori Rix
   Former Newberg resident Lori Rix died Sept. 9, 2003. She was 45.
   She was born March 25, 1958, to Larry and Joan Kosmas in Portland. She grew up in Portland and graduated from Cleveland High School.
   She lived in Newberg for several years until August 1999, when she moved to New Hampshire. She worked 18 years with Nike in Beaverton and then spent the last four years working with Timberland Co. of Stratham, N.H.
   Survivors include: husband Noel; daughters, Amie Lattanzzio of Newberg, Tara Rix and Kiki Rix of Hampton, N.H.; sons, Alexander of Newberg and Noel of Hampton, N.H., two grandchildren; parents, Larry and Joan Kosmas of Portland; and brother Thomas of Milwaukie. She was preceded in death by brother, Anthony, of Portland.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Portland.

Wednesday, Sept. 10
Hazel L. Alen
   Hazel L. Alen of Newberg died Sept. 4, 2003, at her daughter’s home in McMinnville. She was 91.
   She was born Oct. 21, 1911, in Oroville, Wash., to Chester and Ruth (Perrin) Clendenon. She graduated from Humboldt Academy in Eureka, Calif., in 1930, and married Fred Wilbur on June 21, 1935, in Salinas, Calif. Her husband was a Seventh-day Adventist pastor and teacher so the family lived in various places before moving to McMinnville in the 1970s.
   She was a homemaker, elementary school teacher, hospital and community services worker. She was preceded in death by husband Fred in 1992, then married Arvid Alen and moved to Newberg. She was a lifelong member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
   Survivors include: husband Arvid of Newberg; son Kenneth of Cloverdale; stepsons, Paul of Vancouver, Wash., Roy of Vancouver, Wash., and Lloyd of Newberg; daughters, Marcella Lynch of Grants Pass, Muriel Zaugg of McMinnville and Ruth James of Berrien Springs, Mich.; brothers, Don Clendenon of Caldwell, Idaho and Luther Clendenon of Aloha; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers, Ray and Ross.
   A memorial service was held Saturday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pastor Don James officiating. Interment was at Rock Creek Cemetery in Canby.

Rose C. Fendall
   Rose Charlotte Fendall died Sept. 8, 2003, at a Newberg care facility. She was 102.
   She was born Dec. 19, 1900, to Nels and Tilda (Amoth) Hesgard in Orfordville, Wisc. In 1914 her family moved to Oregon and settled on a farm west of Newberg, where she attended Ewing Young School and Newberg High School. After graduating from Franklin High School, she attended Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) taking courses in the school of commerce. She also worked as a secretary for a Portland insurance agency.
   On Nov. 7, 1924, she married Kenneth Fendall in Portland; he was a vocational agriculture teacher at Newberg High School. Later they lived in Gresham before returning to Newberg in 1927 to own and operate the family farm. In 1968, they relocated to Friendsview Manor, where she has since resided.
   She was a member of West Chehalem Friends Church, where she served as a teacher, youth leader and sang in the choir. She was also active in Rural Homemakers Club and the Oregon Rural Mail Letter Carriers Auxiliary. She was also an avid gardener and was known for her roses.
   Survivors include: sons, David, Roger, Gary and Lon, all of Newberg, and Philip of Prineville; daughters, Charlotte Beckett of Vancouver, Wash., and Lois Jensen of Arlington, Wash.; sister Thelma Randall of Portland; 18 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Her husband, Kenneth, preceded her in death in October 1974, as well as two sisters.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in West Chehalem Friends Church with pastors David Fendall, Paul Almquist and Gene Hockett officiating. Committal is private.

Frances G. Findley
   Francis G. Findley died Sept. 1, 2003, at a Newberg care facility. She was 91.
   She was born Nov. 27, 1911, to Walter and Bertha (McComas) Gladstone in Gentry, Mo.
   Survivors include: sons, Jack and Morris of Newberg, John of Dundee, Gary of Lostine and Dick of Redmond; daughter Kay of Newberg; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held Friday at Newberg Free Methodist Church with Pastor Shaun McNay officiating. A committal service followed at Valley View Memorial Park.

George R. Douglass
   George Robert Douglass of Newberg died Aug. 25, 2003, at Providence Newberg Hospital following a stroke. He was 73.
   He was born June 23, 1930, to George and Manda Douglass in Estacada. The family moved to Portland in 1933 where he attended Arleta Grade School, Benson Polytechnic High School and Vanport College. In high school he helped recruit students to form a male glee club of which he was the president of for several years. He also formed a school trio that performed for school as well as extracurricular events. His love of music kept him involved in quartet work most of his life, as well as in leading congregational singing at church.
   When he was 21, he began preaching for the Church of Christ  in Prineville, also working as a machinist. After attending Abilene Christian College he preached for the Church of Christ in Corvallis, then moved to Tillamook where he worked as a machinist under Paul Straight, who later established Climax Manufacturing Co. He also preached while in Tillamook. In 1963, he returned to Portland and worked as a machinist and an estimator at Gender Machine Works.
   Since 1975 he has resided in and near Newberg. He enjoyed operating Newberg Machine and Welding for a short time and training people with disabilities at the United Cerebral Palsy machine shop in Portland. He was a self-employed manufacturer of Mohawk wood stoves and doing other contract work. After retirement he kept busy designing gold panning equipment. On Dec. 29, 1953, he married Maridine Crone of Sandy.
   Survivors include: wife Maridine of Newberg; sons, Charles of Tigard, Mark of Hermiston, Daniel of Newberg and David of Fresno; and 10 grandchildren.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 20 at the Church of Christ with Minister Kevin Kopsa officiating.

Floyd R. Merrill
   Floyd Ray Merrill died Sept. 1, 2003, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 88.
   He was born June 2, 1915, to William and Delia (Henry) Merrill in Wanette, Okla.
   He graduated from Oklahoma A & M (now Oklahoma State University) in 1939, where he met Betty Haws; they were married July 30, 1939, in Terlton, Okla.
   He received a master’s degree in theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and was a Southern Baptist pastor and evangelist for more than 50 years. He helped start churches in Oklahoma, Spokane and the Portland area, including Chehalem Valley Baptist Church in Newberg.
   During World War II and the Korean conflict he served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army. When he left Oklahoma for Korea with the 45th Infantry Division, he took a recording machine and sent many recordings home from the Oklahoma men to their families. He served as national chaplain for the National Guard Association in 1956.
   According to his family he loved Jesus Christ, preaching and building churches and enjoyed his home and garden, music and his family. He also had a wry sense of humor, they said.

Randall of Spokane; daughters, Margaret “Pegi” Castaneda of Granger, Wash., Elizabeth Merrill of Keizer, Sally Mitchell of Dundee and Nancy Langston of Beaverton; sisters, Nora Robbins of Alaska and Peggy Martin of California; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Chehalem Valley Baptist Church, 26155 N.E. Bell Road. A private family graveside service will be at Valley View Memorial Park.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or Chehalem Valley Baptist Church Senior Bus Fund in care of Attrell’s Newberg Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Calvin H. Hull
   Calvin Harvey Hull of Newberg died Sept. 2, 2003. He was 87.
He was born Nov. 21, 1915, to Mack and Flora Hull in Knowles, Okla. He graduated from Greenleaf Friends Academy in Greenleaf, Idaho, in 1935. He married Lela Grace Hawley on Feb. 22, 1940, in Greenleaf.
   The couple moved to Portland, where he graduated from Portland Bible Institute (now Cascade College). After graduation, he pastored Friends churches in Camas, Wash., Scotts Mills, Pleasant Plain, Iowa, and Agnew, Wash.
   In 1955, they returned to Greenleaf, Idaho, so their daughters could attend the academy. During those years he taught grade school in Dixie and purchased a small farm.
   In 1964, the couple returned to ministry. They pastored the Everett Friends Church in Washington and later moved to Medford, where he was on the pastoral staff. They moved to Newberg in 1975 where he joined the staff of George Fox College (now George Fox University) as grounds manager. They were members of North Valley Friends Church and moved to Friendsview Manor in May 1986.
   He enjoyed hobbies and other activities, but family members said those often took a back seat to family needs and ministry opportunities. He enjoyed rock hounding, beach trips, gardening and traveling.
   Survivors include: daughters, Sherrill Comfort and Myrlene Rourke of Newberg, and Yvonne Leppert of Filer, Idaho; brothers, Kenneth, Hubert and Harlan, all of Greenleaf, Idaho; 12 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by infant son David; sister, Lola; and wife Lela in August 2002.
   A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today (Saturday) at the North Valley Friends Church. A graveside service will be held at the Greenleaf cemetery Monday.
   Memorial gifts may be sent to Greenleaf Friends Academy or Friendsview Manor.
