Wednesday, Oct. 29
Stella B. Harris
   Stella Belle Harris of Newberg died Oct. 15, 2003, in Portland. She was 88.
   She was born May 24, 1915, in Ada, Okla., to William and Florence (Kerley) Hickman. She and her seven brothers moved with their parents to Las Animas, Colo. After her father died, the family moved to Haviland, Kan., where she graduated from Friends Academy (now Barclay College) in 1936. She worked as a beautician and later at an air base in Colorado Springs. In 1943 she moved to Los Angeles, where she met Fred Harris and married him in 1949. In 1963 the family moved to Salem; they settled in Newberg in 1990. She was a member of Newberg Friends Church.
   Survivors include: husband Fred of Newberg; daughters Diana  Jimenez of Whittier, Calif., and Virginia Scott and Sheryl Ettelman of Portland; sisters Vivian Thornburg and Leta Hickman, both of Newberg; six grandchildren and seven grandchildren.
   Services were held Oct. 20 at Newberg Friends Church. Disposition was private.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Barclay College or  Newberg Friends Church Mission Fund in care of Newberg Friends Church.

Maurice B. Ripple
   Maurice “Morry” Bernard Ripple of Sherwood died Oct. 23, 2003, at Providence Newberg Hospital.
   Ripple was born to Frank and Elnor (Streeter) Ripple in Minnesota. He completed school in Wisconsin, and later moved to Oregon. He married Barbara Jene on Aug. 16, 1950, in Vancouver, Wash. They made their home in Portland, where he worked for Fairview Farms, Mayflower and the U.S. Postal Service. He started a construction business after retirement and settled in Washington County.
   Survivors include: wife Barbara of Sherwood; sons, Bryan of Phoenix, Ariz., and Scott of Wilsonville; daughter Candy Young of Forest Grove; brother Robert of Milwaukie; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel with Chaplain Gregg Selander officiating. Committal will follow at Valley View Memorial Park Mausoleum in Newberg.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Newberg Hospital Foundation in care of Attrell’s Newburg Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Elias D. Ray
   Elias David Ray died Oct. 24, 2003, in McMinnville. He was 91.
He was born Feb. 20, 1912, to James and Hulda (Amende) Ray in Rushville, Neb. He grew up and attended school in Ashville, Neb., before moving to Montana and later to Oregon. He married Goldie May Dilley on June 1, 1948, in Oregon City and they made their home in Portland. They moved to Wilsonville in 1961, and in 1992 settled in McMinnville. His wide preceded him in death in June.
   He was a handyman and enjoyed finding inventive ways to fix things.
   Survivors include: sons Steven of Salem and Tim of Newberg; daughters, Sharleen Searle of Woodburn and Alice Burson of Lafayette; sister Laura Cathy of Ontario; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
   Services were held Tuesday at the Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland and the First Assembly of God Church in Newberg.

Floriene M. Viles
   Floriene Mae Viles of Newberg died Oct. 20, 2003, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 76.
   She was born May 9, 1927, to Wesley Otto and Ada Muriel (Ryder) Ford in Pierson Station, Ill. She married Max Viles on April 18, 1949, in Cottonwood Falls, Kan. The couple made their home in Emporia, Kan., until 1965, when they moved to Newberg. Her husband preceded her in death in July 1979.

  A graveside service was held Oct. 24 at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg with Pastor Ed Nichols officiating.

William H. Harris
   William Hal Harris of Newberg died Oct. 19, 2003. He was 69.
   He was born Oct. 4, 1934, to Ray and Della Harris in McMinnville. He joined the U.S. Navy as a machinist and he served for 22 years; he was a veteran of both the Korean and the Vietnam wars. He married Jean Young in 1960. After retiring from the military he settled in Newberg and continued working as a machinist for Monarch Machine in Portland.
   He was an avid gardener who enjoyed hunting, fishing and beekeeping.
   Survivors include: wife Jean of Newberg; son John Harris; daughter Debbie Bergmann; grandchildren Ryan, Heidi and Craig Bergmann; brother Ray Harris; and sisters Ada Harris and Teenie.
   A memorial gathering will be held at noon Sunday at the Newberg VFW.


Wednesday, Oct. 22
Phillip G. Alsterberg
   Phillip George Alsterberg of Newberg died Oct. 15, 2003, at a Portland hospital. He was 66.
   Alsterberg was born Feb. 22, 1937, to Roy and Charlotte (Fetrow) Alsterberg in Portland. He graduated from Tigard High School in 1954, entered the Air Force and served in Korea, Japan and Bermuda. He married Claudia Hurd on Aug. 28, 1959, in Portland. He worked for Portland Bottling Company and later Frito-Lay Company. He went into the distribution business in 1965 in Grants Pass, and later opened an advertising venture. He settled in Newberg in May 2000.
   He enjoyed golf, reading and spending time with neighbors.
   Survivors include: wife Claudia of Newberg; sons, Andrew of Newberg and Scott of Chehalis, Wash.; sister Gayle McConnell of Tigard and six grandchildren.
   Committal was private.

Ethal F. Yergen
   Ethal Florence Yergen died Oct. 17, 2003, at Friendsview Manor in Newberg. She was 93.
   She was born Oct. 1, 1910, to Eldon and Alice Newberry in Spokane, and they moved to Newberg when she was a child. She graduated from Newberg High School and received a teaching degree from Pacific College (now George Fox University). She was married three times — to Roy Brown, Paul Gooch and Kenneth Yergen — and was preceded in death by all three. She lived in California for many years and returned to Newberg in the late 1970s.
   She was a member of the Mayflower Society, and had ancestors who came to America aboard the Mayflower. Her hobbies included reading, handwork, sewing and cooking.
   Survivors include: son Arthur Brown of Blackstone, Mass.; one granddaughter, Linda Moore; and two grandsons, Max and Sam Moore.
   She was preceded in death by two brothers, Eldon and Cecil Newberry, and grandson Alan Brown.
   Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 N. Villa Road.


Saturday, Oct. 18
Bernice R. Pelson
   Former Newberg resident Bernice Ruth Pelson died Sept. 27, 2003, in Tigard. She was 87.
   She was born Sept. 26, 1916, in York, Neb., to Issac and Bessie (Brobst) Farley. She graduated from high school and received a teaching certificate. She worked for 25 years at Tektronix in quality control. She moved to Newberg with her husband, Robert, in 1949 and lived there for 20 years. Her husband preceded her in death in 1967.
   She was a member of Eastern Star and enjoyed reading, dancing and arts and crafts.
   Survivors include: sons Rod of Tualatin and Sid of Deer Lodge, Mont.; daughters Mary Craig of Lake Almanor, Calif., and Genevieve Lee of Tigard; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   Disposition was private.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Willamette Falls Hospice, 1404 Division St., Suite 7, Oregon City, OR 97045.

Carl O. Aamot
   Carl O. Aamot of Dundee died Oct. 10. He was 84.
   Aamot was born Nov. 5, 1918, in Cavalier County, S.D. He married Wanda Wojahn in 1970. He was a general contractor. He lived in southeast Portland from 1963-1980, and settled in Dundee in 1990.
   He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
   Survivors include: wife Wanda of Dundee; sons Leon, Duane, Kenneth, Robert and Paul; daughters Katherine Twaddle, Lucille Howey, Genevieve White and Becky Dettler; brother Fred Aamot; sister Alice Bik and 17 grandchildren.
   A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church. Urn placement will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.


Wednesday, Oct. 15
Henry T. Church
   Henry T. Church died Oct. 9, 2003, at his home in Newberg. He was 91.
   Church was born on April 4, 1912, to Arthur and Eunice (Brown) Church in Roseburg. Henry grew up in the hills surrounding Scams Valley and began logging by the time he was 30. With his partner he opened a saw mill. He volunteered for the Army for World War II, and was rejected because logging was considered essential. In 1937 he married Josephine Smith; she died in 1964. He worked at Western States Plywood Plant in Port Orford from 1954 to 1967. He met Anna Bortel in December 1966 and married her less than a year later. They spent time in Alaska, Ohio and California before settling in Newberg in 1981.
   Church enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.
   Survivors include: his wife Anna of Newberg; son Robert of Anchorage; twin daughters, Mary George of Seward, Alaska, and Margaret McCormick of Shedd; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sisters Helen Tiller of Crescent City, Calif., and Elizabeth Householder of Winston.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 25 at Newberg Free Methodist Church; interment is private. Memorial contributions may be made to the International Child Care Ministries of the Free Methodist Church in care of Attrell’s Newberg Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.


Saturday, Oct. 11
Ralph W. Lynch
   Ralph W. Lynch of Dundee died Oct. 7, 2003, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 76.
   Lynch was born Jan. 10, 1927, to William and Clara (Kelsey) Lynch in DuBois, Ill. In 1952 he moved to Burbank, Calif., where he became a journeyman electrician and married Bette Lu Phillips. They lived in New York and places throughout California until 1968, when they moved to Carlton. They settled in Dundee in 1996. Lynch was a Army veteran.
   Survivors include: wife Bette Lu of Dundee; sons, Robert of Oregon City, Thomas of Dundee and David of Tide; sister Audrey Norred of McMinnville; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Glen.
   Services were held Friday at Church on a Hill in McMinnville.

Cora C. Davis
   Newberg native Cora Carolyn Davis died Oct. 3, 2003, at Sunnyside Care Center in Salem. She was 97.
   She was born June 7, 1906, to William and Arena Courtney in Newberg. She graduated from Newberg High School in 1924. She attended Southern Oregon College (now Southern Oregon University) in Ashland. She married Harold Davis on Sept. 1, 1929. She taught school for 21 years in Coos Bay, mostly second grade. She resided in Turner Retirement Home from May 1993 to August 2003.
   She and her husband enjoyed golfing and camping. She taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and played piano.
   Survivors include: son Leland of Olympia, Wash.; a niece;  three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, two brothers and four sisters.
   A memorial service will be held at 11:45 a.m. Oct. 28 at Turner Retirement Homes. Internment was in Oceanview Memory Gardens in Coos Bay.


Wednesday, Oct. 8
Richard Hayes
   Richard Hayes of Salem died Sept. 26, 2003, in Oregon Health & Science University Hospital. He was 50.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Hayes home in Hopewell.

Bernice R. Pelson
   Bernice Ruth Pelson of Tigard died Sept. 27, 2003. She was 87.
She was born on Sept. 26, 1916, in York, Neb. to Issac and Bessie (Brobst) Farley. She graduated from high school and earned a teachers certificate. She worked at Tektronics for 25 years in quality control. She lived in Newberg from 1949 until shortly after her husband, Robert Pelson, died in 1967. She moved to Tigard.
   She enjoyed reading, arts and crafts and dancing. She was a member of Eastern Star.
   Survivors include sons Rod and Sid Pelson; daughters Mary Craig and Genevieve Lee; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
   There will be no memorial service.

Saturday, Oct. 4
Lula V. Webster
   Lula Viola Webster of Newberg died Sept. 30, 2003. She was 97.
   She was born Aug. 17, 1906, to Allen and Hester (Doughit) VanDyke in Red Cloud, Neb. She grew up and attended school there. She married Elvin Jones; they divorced in 1926 and she moved to Forest Grove. In 1928 she married Dick Steege; they divorced 10 years later. On March 23, 1946, she married Arthur Webster in Medford, where they made their home. They moved to Newberg in the early 1960s. She was living at a Newberg assisted-living facility at the time of her death.
   She was involved in women’s clubs, including Royal Neighbors, and various other organizations. She enjoyed friends, traveling to district and state meetings, flower gardening, crocheting, ceramics and constructing little houses, angels and Christmas scenes.
   Survivors include: son Richard Steege of Charleston; daughter Rosa Lee Wagner of Rose Lodge; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
   She was preceding in death by husband, Arthur; children, Junior Jones, Lois Rowe, Leonard Steege and Stanley Steege; and her brother.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Newberg Christian Church with Pastor David Case and Ken Phillips officiating. A vault interment will follow in Newberg Friends Cemetery. Chapel viewing and visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today (Saturday), 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Newberg Christian Church in care of Attrell’s Newberg Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 08132.

Donna B. Meinecke
   Donna B. Meinecke of Newberg died Sept. 25, 2003, in Newberg from complications of Alzheimer’s. She was 77.
   She was born June 7, 1926, to George and Eva (Sloan) Plagman in Alexandria, S.D. She moved to Oregon as a young girl. On July 19, 1945, she married Willie Meinecke. She lived in Texas, Arizona and California, as well as Oregon. She was living in a Newberg facility at the time of her death.
   She was an organist, playing in high school as well as for the Sherwood Funeral Chapel. She was a member of Order of The Eastern Star in Sherwood. She enjoyed golf and was an avid baseball and basketball fan.
   Survivors include: husband Willie of Florida; daughters, Diann Cochran of Tillamook and Beth Sellers of Middleburg, Fla.; and grandchildren Mike and Brian Cochran.
   She was preceded in death by her brother, Ronald, and a  infant sister.
   No services are scheduled at this time. Arrangements are in the care of Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel.

Wednesday, Oct. 1

Joel H. Adams
   Joel Harley Adams of McMinnville died Sept. 24, 2003. He was 87.
   He was born on March 21, 1916, in Alberta, Calif. He graduated from Cascade College in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in pastoral theology. He and his first wife, Amy, pastored eight churches in the Northwest from 1944 to 1986; he was an associate minister at a ninth. He helped build and/or remodel five of the churches he pastored at. His wife, Amy, preceded him in death. He moved to the Friendsview Manor in April 1995.
   Survivors include: wife Phyllis of McMinnville; sister Orpha Langstaff of Cataldo, Idaho; sons Billy Adams of San Francisco and Harley Adams of Marietta, Ga; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held Tuesday at Newberg Friends Church.

Elma J. Goodall
   Elma Jewel Goodall of Sherwood died of a stroke Sept. 27, 2003. She was 84.
   She was born Sept. 26, 1919, to John and Bessie Morrison in Edgewater, Colo. She grew up around Denver and Cheyenne, Wyo. She married Larry Goodall Sr. on Aug. 18, 1937, in Denver. She moved in 1943 to Silverton. She worked in the canneries there and in Woodburn until 1955. Moving around Oregon until 1988, she settled in Sherwood.
   According to family members she was a woman who helped those in need. She enjoyed camping, fishing, crochet, puzzles and animals.
   Survivors include: son Larry Goodall Jr. of Sherwood; daughter Elsie Wanless of Salem; and seven grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her first husband, Larry; two sons, John and Charles; five daughters, Anne Mae Bovee, Carol Jean Goodall, Ruthy Goodall, Ellen Goodall and Anna Goodall; and two sisters, Stella Black and Erma Morrison.
   A graveside service will be held Thursday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in McMinnville with Pastor Don Mulles officiating.

Mildred E. McCann
   Former Newberg resident Mildred McCann died at her McMinnville home on Sept. 28, 2003. She was 78.
   She was born to Laurence and Irene (Arnold) Meade on Oct. 7, 1924, in Malden, Mass. She grew up and attended school in Melrose, Mass. She met John McCann after he returned from the war and they were married on Jan. 11, 1946, in Massachusetts. They made their home in the South Weymouth and Braintree areas until they moved to Newberg in 1958. She worked at Tektronix, retiring from there in 1986. Her husband, John, preceded her in death in July 1998.
   Since 2000 she has resided in McMinnville. She enjoyed oil painting, traveling, cruises and cats.
   Survivors include: daughters, Irene Pickett of Portland and Audrey Beaudry of Lake Oswego; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A daughter, Marsha Metz, preceded her in death.
   A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in St. Michael’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. George Hemingway officiating. A concluding service will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in McMinnville.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Oregon Humane Society in care of Attrell’s Newberg Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.
