Dec. 31, 2003
Lyle D. Lookabill
   Newberg resident Lyle Delmar Lookabill died Dec. 23, 2003, in Newberg. He was 85.
   He was born Nov. 18, 1918, to Lee and Rose (Larson) Lookabill in Randolph, Neb. He moved to Wood, S.D., where he graduated from high school. He attended college at South Dakota State for one year.
   After moving to Portland in 1938 he entered the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in combat in the South Pacific and became a captain. He married Florence Lannon on Oct. 2, 1943, in Long Beach, Calif. After his honorable discharge in December 1945, the couple moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., and later to Nebraska. In 1951 the couple moved to Southern California and in 1952 came to Newberg. He worked as a router for International Harvester for 29 years in Milwaukie before retiring in 1978.
   He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg and the Newberg Boat Club. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing roses.
   Survivors include: wife, Florence of Newberg; sons, Terry of Portland, Kenneth of Newberg and Larry of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; brother Dale of Winner, S.D.; sisters, Berniece Hansen of Winner and Darlene Pearsall of Wood, S.D.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   A memorial mass was held Saturday in Newberg. Committal followed at Evergreen Memorial Park in McMinnville.

Newell C. Wood
   Newberg resident Newell Cyrus Wood died Dec. 24, 2003. He was 88.
   He was born Nov. 18, 1915, to Newell and Nellie (Duncan) Wood in Days Creek, where he grew up and attended elementary school and high school. He worked with his dad in the family’s sawmill. He attended Oregon State University. He married Eva Newport in Roseburg on Oct. 1, 1941. He entered the Army on June 3, 1942, and served in World War II, reaching the rank of first lieutenant before being honorably discharged in 1944. He returned to Days Creek where he farmed and taught agriculture and welding to other farmers. He moved to Corvallis in 1954 and earned a master’s degree at OSU. He taught school in Myrtle Creek and Crow before moving to Newberg, where he was a teacher until he retired in the early 1980s.
   He enjoyed fishing, hunting, photography and carpentry.
   Survivors include: wife Eva of Rickreall; son Randall of Dayton; daughters, Linda Rust of Rickreall and Pamela Boquist of Newberg; four grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
   A funeral service was held Monday in Newberg. Committal followed at Valley View Memorial Park.

Steven C. Archer
   Former Newberg resident Steven Curtis Archer died Dec. 17, 2003, in Portland from complications due to stroke. He was 46.
   He was born April 27, 1957, to Frank and JoAnne Archer in Monrovia, Calif. The family moved to Newberg in the early 1970s. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1975. He married Katherine Garrison in 1982. They divorced in 2000.
   He was the president of Archer’s Precision Sheet Metal in Portland. He was health conscious and exercised a lot, his family said.
   Survivors include: sons, Glenn Garrison of Colorado Springs, Colo., Rod Garrison of Portland, and Steven and Alex Archer, both of Portland; father Frank of Black Butte; sister Kathleen Fox of Merrill; and two grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his mother and brother Frank.
   A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 4 at Metzger Park Hall, 8400 S.W. Hemlock, in Tigard.

Arthur M. McKay
   Arthur M. McKay of St. Paul died Dec. 26, 2003. He was 80.
   He was born April 27, 1923, in St. Paul, where he resided all his life. He was a farmer and served in the Navy during World War II. He married Charlotte Zeilinski on Oct. 15, 1949. She preceded him in death in August 1995.
   He was a member of the St. Paul School Board, Wilco Farmers Board, Agri-Pac cannery board, St. Paul Catholic Church, St. Paul Rodeo Association (former president), American Legion, Knights of Columbus and the Elks Lodge in Salem.
   Survivors include: sons, Mark and Dean of St. Paul; brothers, Richard of St. Paul, Harold of Costa Rica and Francis of Reno; sisters, Agnes Hemshorn of Mt. Angel and Mary Henderson and Nellie Simone of Portland; and five grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held Monday in St. Paul.
   Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Parochial School Endowment or the St. Paul Ambulance Fund.

Dec. 27, 2003
David M. Van Bergen
   David M. Van Bergen of Newberg died Dec. 22, 2003, of unknown natural causes. He was 66.
   He was born Sept 25, 1937, to John and Phyllis Van Bergen in Gem, Alberta, Canada. He received his bachelors degree from George Fox College (now George Fox University) in 1962. He married Carolyn Westberg on July 14, 1961, and settled in Newberg. They later moved to Dundee and in 1977 divorced. He worked in management positions, including his time as advertising manager of the News-Advertiser in McMinnville, and for the Yamhill County fairgrounds. He married Thelma Welliver on May 13, 1979, and moved to her house in Amity. They opened Printistry in 1983 and retired from the business in 1995.
During his retirement he devoted his attention to flowers and politics. He held many position with the Yamhill County Republican party and made unsuccessful bids for state representative and county commissioner. He hosted a cable access television show about local news. He and his wife owned and operated the 15-acre Oregon Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.
   Survivors include: wife Thelma; mother, Phyllis Brown; sisters, Betty, Mary, Dorothy, Martha; brother Bill; sons, Jeff, Mike, Steve, Tim, Dan (Welliver), Brian and Matt; and 22 grandchildren.
   A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Dec 30 at Newberg First Baptist Church, with a reception following in the church social hall.

Barbara R. Burns
   Barbara Ruth Burns of Newberg died Dec. 18, 2003. She was 72.
   She was born Feb. 25, 1931, to Leslie and Ruth (Hollopeter) Owen in Gold Beach. She graduated from high school in Burns in 1949 and married Robert Burns later that year. Her husband preceded her in death in 1988.
   She worked in a variety of occupations, including supervisor at an exotic plant greenhouse, operating a family-owned muffler shop in Coos Bay with her husband, and at a Portland insurance agency.
   She enjoyed the people and activities at the Pioneer Evangelical Church in Dayton, family members said. She completed a 10 kilometer volkswalk in every state, except Alaska. She completed genealogical research on her family.
   Survivors include: sons, Dan of Newberg, David of Vancouver, Wash., and Ken of Loon Lake, Wash.; brother Cliff Owen of Woodburn and six grandchildren.
   There was a private family burial on Dec. 20, 2003, at Gold Beach. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 29 at the Dayton Pioneer Evangelical Church, Fourth and Church streets.

Gene B. Talbott
   Newberg resident Gene Bradley Talbott died Dec. 17, 2003, in Newberg. He was 91.
   He was born Oct. 23, 1912, to Maurice and Carrie Talbott in Rome, N.Y. He grew up in Seattle and graduated from the Dallas Theological Seminary. He married Brownibel Cole in 1936 and afterward built a log cabin on the Olympic Peninsula with lumber he cut. He later lived in Portland and Banks, where he worked as an organic farmer. He moved to Newberg 10 years ago.
   He held patents for several of his inventions, including one for an agricultural transplanting machine. He enjoyed planning new businesses and farming. He was the developer of the Ralieghwood development in Portland.
   Survivors include: wife Brownibel of Newberg; daughters, Jeanne Keenan, Connie Blattner and Cathy Thienes; sons, Thomas, David and Stephen; brother William; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   A funeral service was held Monday in Tigard.

Kathryn Sexton
   Kathryn Sexton died Dec. 18, 2003, at her daughter’s home in Lafayette. She was 65.
   She was born Feb. 17, 1938, to Roy And Millie (Stephenson) Sexton in Oklahoma City, Okla. She moved to Modesto, Calif., where on July 1, 1954, she married Arvest Anderson. They divorced in 1982. She moved to Dundee in the late 1950s and also lived for many years in Newberg and McMinnville. In 1988 she moved to Crook River Ranch and in 2000 to Prineville. She worked primarily in an office setting or yard maintenance. She moved in with her daughter in Lafayette in November.
   She enjoyed her family, fishing and shopping.
   Survivors include: daughters, Frida Lewis of Lafayette, Rita Weber of Riverton, Wyo., and Lita Landry of McMinnville; brother Bill Sexton of McMinnville; sister Patricia Hanson of McMinnville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held Tuesday at the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in McMinnville.

Martha E. Carr
   Newberg resident Martha Eldora Carr died Dec. 18, 2003, in Newberg. She was 83.
   She was born June 18, 1920, to Louis and Irma (Blatchley) Hoke in Portola, Calif. She was raised in Oroville, Calif. She spent 44 years working as a nurse in hospitals, care homes and clinics. She married Jim Carr June 29, 1947, in Pasadena, Calif. He preceded her in death in November 1999.
   She enjoyed gardening and cooking, and volunteered at Newberg Free Methodist Church.
   Survivors include: daughter Joanne Gomez of Tepatitlaan, Mexico; sister Mary Lull of Oroville, Calif.; three granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; and friend Hilda Fair of Newberg.
   A memorial service was held Tuesday at Newberg Free Methodist Church with Pastor Shaun McNay officiating. Committal was private at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland.

Dec. 20, 2003
Travis D. Barry
   Former Newberg resident Travis Dean Barry died Dec. 3, 2003. He was 40.
   He was born Sept. 7, 1963, to Albert and Clara (Ball) Davis in McMinnville. He was raised in Newberg. He worked at Bilet Lumber Company in Sherwood, and later for Pacific City Tidewater Restaurant and Lounge.
   He was a bicyclist and a faithful worker, his family said.
   Survivors include: parents Albert and Clara of Cloverdale; brother Sean of Cloverdale; sister Tracie Rausch of Pacific City; grandmother Clover Smith of Denver; one niece, one nephew and one great nephew.
   There was a memorial service held Dec. 7.

John E. Billick
   Dundee resident John “Jack” E. Billick died Dec. 16, 2003, in Newberg. He was 82.
   He was was born Feb. 11, 1921, to Edmond and Guinevere (Adkins) Billick in Newberg. He grew up and went to school in Dundee and graduated from high school. He worked in the Portland shipyards until entering the U.S. Army in 1942 during World War II. After serving four years he was honorably discharged on the four-year anniversary of Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1945. He moved to Portland in 1950 and in 1951 he married Winona Plugh in Reno. They returned to Portland and lived there until 1960, when they moved to Sherwood to spend the next 30 years.
   He was truck driver, sold wholesale nursery stock and remodeled houses. His wife preceded him in death in 1989. He retired in 1990 and moved home to Dundee.
   He donated land for Dundee-Billick Park, city hall and made monetary contributions to Dundee Cemetery, Newberg Community Hospital (now Providence Newberg Hospital) and Dundee United Methodist Church. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe.
   Survivors include: sister Florence Huntley of Spanaway, Wash.; personal representative Valorie Andrews of Newberg; friend Delores Robertson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   Preceding him in death was nephew Donald Hadley and sister Dorothy Hadley.
   Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Margaret Golden officiating. A concluding service will follow at Dundee Pioneer Cemetery.

Martha Bailey
   Former Newberg resident Martha “Jo” Bailey died Dec. 16, 2003, in Portland. She was 61.
   She was born Jan. 31, 1942, to Edward and Faye (Gann) Hughes in Salinas, Calif. As a girl she moved to Dayton, where she graduated from high school. She moved to California and back again before settling in Newberg in 1975, where she lived until 2000. She was a licensed childcare provider in Newberg for many years.
   She enjoyed reading, and was kind, caring, gentle and giving, her family said.
   Survivors include: sons, Glen of Hillsboro, Scott of Clarkston, Wash., and John of Monroe, Wash.; daughters, Kimberly Fanger of Newberg, Rhonda Newell of Delano, Calif., and Lisa Brown of McMinnville; brothers, Allen Hughes of Bellevue, Wash., and David Reynolds of Portland; sisters, Jeanette Veach of Carlton and June Nielson of Oregon City; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today (Saturday) and Sunday at Monday at the Chapel of Macy and Sons Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans, McMinnville. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.


Dec. 17, 2003
Merry E. Harner
   Merry Elizabeth Harner of Sherwood died Dec. 13, 2003, after a short illness. She was 68.
   She was born Dec. 24, 1934, to Harry and Grace (Briggs) Triplett in Gordon, Neb., and was adopted by Ross and Clara Tilton. While raising her family in Nebraska she worked as a beautician. She moved to Oregon in 1974.
   She possessed a quick wit, the ability to laugh with a full heart and an aptitude for loving unconditionally, according to family members.
   Survivors include: sister Eunice Schiele of Sherwood; children, Lonny Harner of Sherwood, Mark Harner of Newport, Carol Johansen of Tualatin and Karen Hutchens of Newberg; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   There will be a private service for the family.


Dec. 13, 2003
Goldie F. Comer
   Goldie Frances Comer died Dec. 6, 2003, in Newberg. She was 85.
   She was born Nov. 27, 1918, to William and Janey (Shelton) Comer in Carrolls, Wash. She moved with her family to Newberg and attended grade school here. She worked in a variety of jobs and later owned her own home on Main Street.
   She enjoyed pets, flowers and friends. Her circle of friends appreciated her quiet way and engaging humor, her family said.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Violet, Rosie and John; and nephew, Ralph Amy.
   A funeral service was held Friday in Attrell’s Newberg Chapel with reflections by Barbara Thygesen, Cody Prutch and others. Private committal with vault interment will follow at Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Arthur J. Stewart
   Former Newberg resident Arthur Jay Stewart died Dec. 8, 2003, at his home in Salem. He was 84.
   He was born Sept. 3, 1919, to Arthur and Iva (Whisnand) Stewart in McMinnville. He farmed at a place outside Newberg, then he switched to logging, stone cutting, working at American Seating, and buying and remodeling rental property in the Salem area. In 1976 he moved to Christmas Valley, where he built a wheat and barley ranch. He retired from farming in 1986 and returned to Salem. He married Marjorie Shepley on March 31, 1944, and she preceded him in death in 1961. He remarried Loretta Rowe on June 9, 1962, and she preceded him in death in 2002.
   Survivors include: daughters, Janice Lowe of Vancouver,  Wash., and Virginia Musgrave of Pomeroy, Wash.; grandchildren, Lori Beauchamp of Tonalea, Ariz., Amanda Judd of North Bend, Shannon Musgrave of Johnson City, Tenn., and Christopher Musgrave of Pomeroy, Wash.; and friend Alene Wilson of Brooks.
   A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Howell-Edwards-Doerksen Funeral Home and Rigdon-Ransom Chapel. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Valley View Cemetery in Newberg.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Walton Guest House at P.O. Box 4182, Salem, OR 97302.

Wayne R. Bell
   Wayne Russell Bell of Newberg died Dec. 9, 2003, at his home in Newberg. He was 65.
   He was born Oct. 12, 1938, to Robert and Lorraine (Pelleymounter) Bell in Oelwein, Iowa. He received his education in Texas. In 1958, he married Esther Crofts in Las Vegas. From 1958 to 2000, he worked for the pulp and paper industry, first at Potlatch Paper in Pomona, Calif. He moved to Newberg in 1967 to work as a maintenance superintendent for Publisher’s Paper, where he stayed until 1973. He worked in mechanical/industrial construction for 20 years as a superintendent and consultant for Harder Mechanical and Baugh Industrial. He later owned and operated a business consulting for a variety of heavy construction projects. During retirement he ran a tractor business in the Springbrook area.
   He enjoyed attending his grandchildrens’ sporting and school events.
   Survivors include: wife Esther of Newberg; sons, Michael of Wilsonville and Ronald of Newberg; brothers, Larry of Paris, Tenn., and Raymond of Running Springs, Calif.; sisters, Roberta Ferrell of Mineola, Texas, and Carol Hogan of New Ulm, Texas; and five grandchildren.
   A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel with the Rev. Peter Blank officiating. Committal is private at Valley View Memorial Park, Newberg.

Dec. 10, 2003
Rowena J. Turpen
   Newberg native Rowena J. Turpen died Dec. 1, 2003, at her home in Albany. She was 56.
   She was born April 16, 1947, to James and Hazel (Walton) Turpen in Newberg. She lived here until 1985 when she moved to McMinnville. There she lived until 1996, then moved to Sheridan, then to Albany in August.
   She won Special Olympics trophies and medals for bowling and track. She was an Elvis Presley fan and enjoyed dancing, word search puzzles, coloring and latchhook crafts.
   Survivors include: brothers, Harold Turpen of Newberg and David Turpen of Battle Ground, Wash.
   She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Jaunita Gouley.
  A memorial service will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Chehalem Senior Center, 501 Foothills Drive. Private burial will be at Newberg Friends Cemetery.
   Memorial contributions may be given to Oregon Mennonite Home or Evergreen Hospice, in care of Macy and Sons Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans, McMinnville, OR 97128.

Mary A. Grove
   Mary A. Grove of Newberg died Dec. 6, 2003, in Portland. She was 88.
   She was born Aug. 30, 1915, to Martin and Josephine (Waleda) Bozek in Chicago. She graduated from Lansing Eastern High School in 1934 and worked for the Michigan Sales Tax Revenue Department. She transferred to the Department of Corrections in Jackson, Mich., where she took her State Employees Exam and met her husband, Milo. They married on Feb. 15, 1947. She left work to care for her new family. He preceded her in death in April of 1981. She moved to Oregon in 1994.
   She was active in the Portage Senior Center, including her role of meal site coordinator. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, walking, cards and bingo.
   Survivors include: son, Robert of Newberg; daughter, Catherine of Portland; sister, Frances Work of Lansing, Mich; brother, Lewis Bozek of East Lansing, Mich.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughters, Connie and Marsha.
   Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel, 207 Villa Road. A Mass of Christian burial will held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg. Internment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kalamazoo, Mich.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Peter Catholic Church building fund in care of Howell-Edwards-Doerksen Funeral Chapel, 1350 Commercial St. SE, Salem, OR 97302.

Virginia P. Tervo
   Newberg native Virginia Parrett Tervo died Dec. 1, 2003, in Tukwila, Wash. She was 59.
   She was born June 14, 1944, in Newberg. She graduated from Newberg High School in 1962. She attended Seattle Pacific College and worked as a secretary for several years. She married David Tervo on May 15, 1966, at the Newberg First United Methodist Church. Together they owned and operated a 7-11 store in Burien, Wash. She became a full-time homemaker after the birth of their son. She and her family lived in Kent, Wash., for more than 30 years.
   She was active in the Lutheran church.
   Survivors include: husband David of Kent, Wash.; son, Brian of Redmond, Wash.; daughter, Michelle Siebenaler of Renton, Wash.; mother, Edith Parrett of Newberg; and sister Carol Morter of Newberg.
   A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Wash. Internment was Dec. 5 at Mt. View Cemetery in Auburn, Wash.


Dec. 3, 2003
Bernice L. Worth
   Newberg native Bernice Lucy Schaad Worth died Nov. 6, 2003, at her home. She was 80.
   She was born April 22, 1923, in Newberg, where she grew up on Parrett Mountain. She attended Rex Hill School and Newberg High School. She attended Oregon State University, and after took advanced studies in dietetics at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was a registered dietitian for more than 50 years and worked in hospitals from Tacoma to Portland and Coos Bay to Jacksonville, N.C. She lived with her husband, Tom, in Edgewood, Wash., for 23 years.
   She was an avid gardener, and along with her husband was a member of the Tacoma chapter of the American Rhododendron Society.
   Survivors include: brothers, Carl of Virginia, and Larry, Walter and Stanley of Oregon; son Stan of Austin, Texas, sister Edna of Washington; and many nieces and nephews.
   Preceding her in death was her son, Scott.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Newberg First United Methodist Church. Interment will be private at the Friends Cemetery in Newberg.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Rhododendron Species Foundation, P.O. Box 3798, Federal Way, WA 98063.

Howard F. Stumma
   Howard Frank Stumma died Nov. 28, 2003, at Chehalem Health and Rehabilitation Center in Newberg. He was 100.
   He was born July 19, 1903, to Otto and Elizabeth (Wood) Stumma in Shady Grove, Iowa. In the 1920s he settled near Chehalem Mountain, where he married Beulah Waldron on May 16, 1931. They lived near Springbrook for five years before buying a small farm near Rex Hill, where they lived for 64 years. Beulah preceded him in death in 1992.
   He pruned fruit orchards for years in addition to his farm work. He worked at the Dundee Nut Company, Oregon shipyards and B.P. John Furniture Co. in Portland. He maintained a large vegetable garden and enjoyed splitting wood. Skilled with a wood lathe, he also enjoyed fishing with his wife.
   Survivors include: daughter Carolyn Pacheco of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; son, Richard of Hillsboro; grandsons, Randol, Wende and Don Jackson, all of Portland; and two great-grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held Tuesday at Newberg Friends Cemetery.
