November 29, 2003
Brian N. Strong
   Brian Neal Strong of Newberg died Nov. 22, 2003. He was 29.
   He was born March 21, 1974, to Donald and Josephine (Wert) Strong in Portland. He grew up in Newberg and attended school here.
   He enjoyed camping, hiking, surfing and snowboarding. He was also an artist, family members said.
   Survivors include: parents Donald and Josephine of Newberg; sisters, Ginny Holter of Dundee and Christine Travis and Lynette Sutton, both of Kansas City, Mo.; brother David Wilson of Kansas City, Mo.
    A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Tigard Assembly of God Church.


November 26, 2003
June M. Leffler
   Former Newberg resident June M. Leffler of King City died Nov. 20, 2003, at a foster home in Newberg. She was 93.
   She was born Feb. 28, 1910, to James and Helen (Carlson) Jackson in Lostine, where she grew up and graduated from high school. She married Melvin Dunston on May 18, 1940. In 1941 made their home in Newberg. Her husband preceded her in death in June 1987. She married Ernest Leffler in Newberg, and made King City their home.
   She was a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Newberg for many years. She was also a member of the PEO, Chapter DX, the Elks Club and the Tigard Kiwanis Club.
   Survivors include: husband Ernest of King City; and nieces and nephews, Julie Trincado, Gary Jackson, Donald Jackson, Janet Heavener and Dorothy Bartlett.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel with the Rev. Bart Murdock officiating. Committal will be private at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Attrell’s Newberg Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.


November 22, 2003
Steven J. Maine
   Former Newberg resident Steven James Maine of Keizer died Nov. 14, 2003, in a motor vehicle accident in Grants Pass. He was 38.
   He was born Sept. 6, 1965, to Jim and Deanie Maine in San Diego, Calif.. He was raised and educated in Chula Vista, Calif. He lived for many years in Newberg and attended First Nazarene Church. He later was a member of Countryside Christian Church in Keizer. He married Candice Cossboon on Jan. 24, 1987, in Lincoln, Ill.
   He coached basketball for the Salem/Keizer Skyball. He enjoyed all sports, particularly golf.
   Survivors include: parents Jim and Deanie Maine of Nampa, Idaho; wife Candice of Keizer; daughters, Tiffany, Jessica and Ashley Maine, all of Keizer; son Keith of Keizer; and sister Sherry of Reno.
   A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Keizer Funeral Chapel. Interment will be at Belcrest Memorial Park.

Charles O. Stern
   Charles O. Stern of Sheridan died Nov. 11, 2003, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane. He was 62.
   He was born Oct. 7, 1941, to George and Kathryn (Burns) Stern in Tonasket, Wash. He was raised and educated there, as well as in Walla Walla. He dropped out of school in eighth-grade to work in the woods with his stepfather. He earned a general equivalency diploma and went on to graduate from the International Accountants Society in Chicago and the Pasadena School of Insurance in California.
   He married Elizabeth McCurdy on Aug. 5, 1962, in Allegan, Mich. He moved to Sheridan in 1971, and soon after started working for the Yamhill County Clerk’s Office. He was appointed elections director in 1973, and was appointed to county clerk in 1981. He was re-elected county clerk in every election since.
   He helped monitor the first Albanian election after Communism. In 1987 and 1988 he headed the Oregon Association of County Clerks. He had recently been elected to a vice presidency in the National Association of County Recorders, Elections Officials and Clerks, putting him in line to assume the presidency in 2006.
   He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, McMinnville Kiwanis, a board member of Sheridan Fire District and the Association of Oregon Counties and U.S. Postmaster Generals Bulk Mailing Committee.
   Survivors include: wife Elizabeth of Sheridan; daughter Becky Doll of Sheridan; son Ben Stern of Sheridan; stepsister Doris Gurr of Redding, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by stepbrother Don Shaffer and sister Leona Stern.
   A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the McMinnville Community Center with pastor Lynn Bryson officiating.

November 19, 2003
James F. Svendsen
   James Frederick Svendsen of Newberg died Nov. 12, 2003. He was 75.
   He was born in Newberg on May 22, 1928, to William and Geneva (Wilson) Svendsen. He graduated from Newberg High School. He married Thelma Sherburne on Jan. 8, 1949, at the First Christian Church in Newberg. She preceded him in death. For many years he worked as a truck driver for Chehalem Valley Mills, Newberg Auto Freight and TP Freight.
   He was quite the joker, according to his family. He was a handyman who liked going to the casino and watching golf.
   Survivors include: daughters, Betty Pappas and Jeanne Pollay, both of Newberg; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held Tuesday at First Christian Church in Newberg. Committal followed at Friends Cemetery.

Erma B. Kirkpatrick
   Erma B. Kirkpatrick died Nov. 11, 2003, at a Portland care facility. She was 95.
   She was born April 19, 1908, to William and Frances (Tatman) Baker in Buxton. She moved around with her family a lot as a young person. She moved into a lady’s home at a young age, where she cooked for herself and attended school. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1927. She attended Oregon Normal School (Western University) in Monmouth and finished in 1931. She taught at Hayward, Buxton, Prickett School, Mead School and Mt. Home School. She married George Kirkpatrick Aug. 20, 1935, and they made their home on the Kirkpatrick homestead. Together they ran the farm for many years, and after his death in 1987 she kept it going many more.
   She quilted, was a seamstress and a great cook, family members said. She was a member of Mt. Home United Methodist Church since 1935, of Eastern Star in Sherwood and of the School Grange #338.
   Survivors include: son Rodney of Gresham; daughters, Karen McFall and Joan Kirkpatrick, both of Sherwood; grandchildren, Connie Kimber of Aloha, Clarissa Aoyama of Tualatin, Clint McFall of Sherwood, Keri Kirkpatrick of Gresham and Kelly Kirkpatrick of Grants Pass; and great-grandchildren, Liam Kimber of Aloha and Logan Kirkpatrick of Grants Pass.
   She was preceded in death by son David, three brothers and three sisters.
   A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at Mt. Home United Methodist Church with the Rev. Anne Weld-Martin officiating. Concluding service will follow at Gibbs Cemetery in Sherwood.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Home Methodist Church in care of Attrell’s Sherwood Chapel, 280 N.W. First Street, Sherwood, OR 97140.

Leland A. Brown
   Leland Andrew Brown of Newberg died Nov. 10, 2003, at a Grants Pass hospital. He was 77.
   He was born Oct. 16, 1926, to Verley and Minona (French) Brown in Lion, Iowa. He moved with his family in 1937 to Newberg, where he attended the local elementary schools. He served in the Army from 1945 to 1946 as a light artillery gun crewman. He worked for Boeing from 1948 to 1989 in Kent, Wash.
   He enjoyed horseback riding, skiing, drag racing, traveling and crafts.
   Survivors include: brothers, Lyle of Grants Pass, Lawrence of Irving, Texas, Lorrell of Roseburg and Dean of Newberg; sisters, Margaret Fogel of Newberg, Mary Brown of Fresno and Nona Wood of Hillsboro; and 22 nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clair, Kenneth and Verley Edgar.
   A funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel. Committal will follow at Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Laura A. Flaherty
   Laura Agnes Flaherty of Mt. Angel died Nov. 6, 2003. She was 95.
   She was born May 6, 1908, to Frank and Lucy (Forcht) Niederberger in Frances, Wash. She grew up and attended schools in Dundee. She married Joe Flaherty on July 6, 1945. After her husband completed his military service in World War II, the couple made their home in the Coos Bay area, where she was a homemaker. Her husband preceded her in death in 1987. She moved to Mt. Angel the following year.
   She enjoyed making home movies with her husband, and was a lifelong member of the Catholic church.
   Survivors include: sisters, Tressie Mullen and Lucy Haener, both of Mt. Angel; brother Frank ‘Fritz’ Niederberger of Dundee; and many nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by: brothers, Alphonse, Albert and Paul Niederberger; and sisters, Augusta Groff and Marie Brentano (her twin).
    A graveside service was held Nov. 10 at Dundee Pioneer Cemetery. The Unger Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel in Mt. Angel Towers or the Mt. Angel Seminary.

Melvin L. Thome
   Melvin Leslie Thome of Newberg died of cancer Nov. 1, 2003, in Newberg. He was 84.
   He was born Sept. 19, 1919, to Leslie and Gladys (Gordon) Thome in Flint, Mich. He graduated from Mt. Clemens High School in 1937. In 1940 he started working for General Motors, in its Buick division. He served in the Marines from 1944 to 1946. He retired from GM in 1975.
   He held a lifetime membership in the Masons and enjoyed traveling the country, playing golf and music.
   Survivors include: son Carl of Phoenix, Ariz., and Howard of South Dakota; and granddaughter Corrie Thome of Flint, Mich.
   There will be no funeral service.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Newberg Fire Department.

Leah Barbara Schick
   Leah Barbara Schick died Oct. 31, 2003, at the Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver. She was 86.
   She was born Jan. 24, 1917, to Gottlieb and Barbara (Stahlecker) Adolf Sr. She grew up in the Bethune area, where she attended school through the eighth-grade. She married Ernest Schick on Jan. 7, 1938.
   She played saxophone, sang in the choir and played the piano at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She also enjoyed bowling, fishing, crafts, gardening, camping, traveling and playing cards.
Survivors include: husband Ernest; son Dean of Cheyenne Wells, Colo.; daughters, Barbara Briggs of Gulf Breeze, Fla. and Marilyn Tafoya of Denver; half brother George Wiedman of Burlington, Colo.; aunt Nettie Hasart; numerous nieces and nephews; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Herman and Gottlieb; sister Ella; son-in-law Fred Tafoya and sister-in-law Leona Wiedman.
   A funeral service was held Nov. 5 at First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Burial followed in the Fairview Cemetery in Burlington, Colo.
   Memorial contributions may be made to First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Building Fund in care of Bank of Burlington, 410 14th St., Burlington, CO 80807.

Gregory J. Windsor
   Gregory J. Windsor of McMinnville died Oct. 28, 2003, at his home. He was 50.
   He was born May 17, 1953, to Chester and Eva Nadine (Green) Windsor in Newberg. He was raised in Newberg and in 1971 graduated from Newberg High School.
   His hobbies included scientific experiments, reading, astronomy and trips to the beach.
   Survivors include: sons, Tom DelVillar of Silverton and Ian Windsor of McMinnville; daughters, Beth Poland and Beccah Trunde, both of McMinnville; brothers, Don of Portland, and Gary and Rod of Newberg; and six grandchildren.
   A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Fernwood Pioneer Cemetery with Pastor Eric Neilson officiating.


November 5, 2003
Alice Dixon
   Alice Dixon of Newberg died Oct. 29, 2003, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 88.
  She was born Dec. 5, 1914, to Elmer and Rose (Hampton) Dixon in Dundee. She attended Unity Grade School and graduated from Dayton High School. She made her home on the family farm west of Dundee and cared for her parents as they became elderly. She later moved to Newberg, where she worked for George Fox College (now George Fox University) as a switchboard operator and then as a dorm housemother. She moved to Friendsview Manor.
   She enjoyed knitting and making gifts for her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was a member of the Newberg Church of the Nazarene.
   Survivors are: nieces, Mary Grace Johnson of Dayton, Dorothy Gordon and Carole Cowan of Santa Barbara, Calif., Marilyn Bergstrom of Molalla, Diane De Forger of Salem and Virginia Johnson of Newberg; nephews, John Dixon of McMinnville, Don Dixon of Oregon City, Clarence Dixon of Beaverton, Weldon Jackson of Santa Rose, Calif., and Hawley Jackson of La Quinta, Calif.; brother Paul Dixon of Portland; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
   She was preceded in death by sisters Lucille, Mabel and Helen, and brothers Alfred, John and Willard.
   A funeral service was held Tuesday at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel with the Rev. Don Fivecoat officiating.

Larry D. Ross
   Larry Duncan Ross of Newberg died Nov. 2, 2003, of heart failure. He was 66.
   He was born Jan. 1, 1937, to Milo and Helen (Ritter) Ross in Salem. He attended George Fox College (now George Fox University) from 1954 to 1957. He graduated from the Los Angeles Culinary Institute in 1989.
   Survivors are: daughters, Debra Lee-Martell of Newberg, Laurie Ross of Newberg and Shelly Carson of Washougal, Wash.; sisters, Nancy Brown of St. Paul and Elletta Kennison of Seattle; brother Stephen Ross of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and five grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by brother Ned Wheeler.
   There will be a gathering of friends and family at 11 a.m. Friday at Newberg Friends Church in Barclay Room 1 and 2.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.

Mary E. Geil
   Mary Elizabeth Geil of Newberg died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003 in Newberg. She was 81.
   Geil was born April 4, 1922, in Los Angeles. She attended Washington High School in Portland and was later a student at Cascade College, where she met her future husband, Earl Geil. They were married for 62 years. She attended Cherry Grove Friends Church in Battle Ground, Wash., and was a resident of Newberg for the past 10 years.
   Geil enjoyed knitting, cooking, crossword puzzles and reading the Bible.
   Survivors include husband Earl; daughter Judy Schubert of Mesa, Wash.; sons Steven of Ridgefield, Wash.; Daniel of Merritt Island, Fla., Joe of Vernon, Wash. and David of Connell, Wash.; sister Barbara Kirk of Newberg; brother Gordon Reece of Portland; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held Oct. 30 in Battle Ground, Wash.

Billie Delanoy
   Billie Delanoy of McMinnville died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at Life Care Center. He was 75.
   Delanoy was born Oct. 6, 1928, in Portland to Paul and Erma (Haskell) Delanoy. He was a veteran and longtime resident of Oregon.
   Survivors include: wife Joyce Delanoy; sons Edmond of Panama City Beach, Fla. and Brian Hilderbrand of Newberg; sister Joy Wingo of Milaini, Hawaii; and four grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by son, Billy, brother, Ronald, and sister, Pauline Dorning.
   A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Florence E. Cassidy
   Florence E. Cassidy of Newberg died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at her home. She was 80.
   Cassidy was born May 5, 1923, to Ernest V. and Theresa B. (Andore) Rober in Mandan, North Dakota. There she grew up and graduated from high school. She moved with her mother to Newberg in the early 1940s, after her father died. She married Arthur W. Cassidy back in Mandan on June 4, 1942. They returned to Newberg to make their home. She worked for the Newberg Library from 1948 to 1954, at which point she stayed home with her children. She returned to the library in 1971 and retired after 48 years of service. Her husband preceded her in death on June 29, 1993.
   Florence enjoyed her home, family, cooking, quilting, reading and knitting. She was a member of the St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg. Part of her church activities included making hundreds of rosaries, many of which were sent to Russia.
   Survivors include: daughters Mary Lou Dittman, Patty Cassidy, and Judy Cassidy, all of Newberg, and Theresa Miller of Aumsville; grandchildren Sarah Cassidy, Shawn Miller and Andrew Dittman; great-grandchildren Keegan and Isaac; foster children Connie Castillo and Tina Castle; sister-in-law Donna Tice; and her special care giver Mary Roth.
   She was preceded in death by her son, Joseph Cassidy, on Aug. 12, 1976 and her brother, Richard Rober.
   The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. today (Saturday) at St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg with Father Jim Nibbler and Father Gregory Gage officiating. A concluding service with vault interment will follow at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery, St. Paul.

N. Keith Miller
   N. Keith Miller of Newberg died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at his home. He was 73.
   Miller was born Aug. 21, 1930, to W. Ray and Lorena T. (Whitlock) Miller in Grand Rapids, Mich. There he grew up and graduated from Union High School in 1948. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge he returned to Grand Rapids he worked as a policeman for three years. In 1971 he moved to the Portland area. He married Judith Jane Eitniear on Aug. 12, 1972, in Hood River. He worked for Pacific Northwest Hardware and Implements as a consultant and design person, setting up stores in a variety of areas until 1988. In 1975 he moved to Newberg and started a business of his own in the field. He was able to expand his business internationally before he retired in 1998.
   Miller was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the National Rifle Association and American Legion.
   Survivors include: wife Judith; sons Michael Miller of Overland Park, Kan. and Larry Miller of Dundee; daughter Lorena Raymond of Portland; sister Beverly Miller of Grand Rapids, Mich.; grandchildren Haylee Raymond, Hogan Miller, Carson Miller and Andrew Miller.
   Miller was preceded in death by a brother.
   A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel in Newberg with Pastor Bruce Sloan officiating. Committal is private at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
