March 31, 2004
David L. LaFevre
   Former Newberg resident David Lowell LaFevre died March 21, 2004. He was 60.
   He was born Jan. 21, 1944, in Chicago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and worked in the telephone industry for 30-plus years.
   Survivors include: daughters, Shelley D’Angelo, Erin LaFevre and Elena LaFevre; sons, Scott and Josh LaFevre and Eric Biggs; sister Jewell Schroll and brother Raymond.
   A gathering of friends and family was held Saturday in Coos Bay.

Harold A. Scharff Jr.
   Former Newberg resident Harold A. Scharff Jr. died March 24, 2004, at a Tualatin care facility. He was 71.
   He was born Oct. 12, 1932, to Harold Sr. and Margaret (Prince) Scharff in Newberg. He graduated from Newberg Union High School in 1951. In 1953 he married Ellen Twenge. He spent most of his working career at Scharff Motor Freight and served as president from 1971 until he sold the company and retired in 1990. During his tenure as president he received international recognition for his use of lightweight and full-efficient equipment. Over the years he also owned and operated other businesses, including a tire dealership and an auto repair shop. In 1998 he moved to Aurora.
   He served in the Oregon National Guard, as a deacon at Zion Lutheran Church and was a contributor to many community activities. His hobbies included sports, horses, dogs, skeet shooting and anything related to automobiles and hot rods. He also enjoyed the activities in which his children participated.
   Survivors include: sons, Terry and Timothy of Newberg and Todd of Tualatin; daughter Michele Olson of Montgomery, Ala.
   A memorial service was held Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg with Pastor Steve Estrem officiating. Concluding services were at Evergreen Memorial Park in McMinnville.

Amanda R. Rogers
   Amanda “Mandy” Richelle Rogers of Newberg died March 22, 2004, in Newberg. She was 44.
   She was born Nov. 8, 1959, to Raymond and Betty Schara in Blackfoot, Idaho. She attended grade school in Dundee, Dayton and St. Paul, and high school in McMinnville. She married Carl Rogers on Feb. 29, 1984, in Beaverton. She worked full-time as a housewife and mother. She spent time living in Lafayette, Woodburn and Newberg, as well as eight years in Ardmore, Okla.
   She enjoyed the outdoors, camping, boating and swimming, as well as cooking, driving, traveling, calligraphy, crocheting and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed country music and oldies rock and roll, as well
   Survivors include: husband Carl Rogers of Ardmore, Okla.; parents, Raymond and Betty Schara of Elgin, Kan.; sons, John and Jeff Coelho of Woodburn and Anthony Rogers of Newberg; daughter Sara Rogers of Newberg; sisters Julie Walthers of Lafayette and Melanie Schara of Elgin, Kan.; and two grandchildren.
   A graveside service was held Tuesday at Friends Cemetery in Newberg. Her dog Spudders, who died in 2003 after 16 years with her, will be buried with her.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel to help cover funeral expenses.

Harriett A. McBride
   Former Yamhill resident Harriett “Tina” Ann McBride died March 22, 2004, at her home in Lincoln City. She was 65.
   She was born Sept. 12, 1938, to John and Lillian (Spencer) Gearrey in Chelsea, Maine. She married Don McBride on March 17, 2000. She owned and operated the Yamhill Cafe in Yamhill for 19 years. She retired to the Oregon coast in 2000. She was a member of the Carlton First Baptist Church.
   She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening and traveling.
   Survivors include: daughter Sherry Simmons of Dundee; son Troy Folsom of Portland; sister Joyce DeVinaspre of Boise; sister Alberta Jones of Elko, Nev.; brothers, Raymond and John Gearrey, both of Boise; and five grandchildren.
   Preceding her in death was brother Thomas Gearrey, parents John and Lillian Gearrey, and sisters Blanche Dury, Bernice Wyatt and Shirley Gearrey.
   A service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Carlton First Baptist Church.

Roy D. Stonebrink
   Roy Donald Stonebrink died March 20, 2004, at Willamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville. He was 73.
   He was born June 28, 1929, to George and Grace (Edwards) Stonebrink in Sofia, N.M. The family moved to Yamhill in 1946. He married Shirley Baker in Vancouver, Wash., in 1949. He worked for her father as a logging truck driver until 1952, at which point he joined the Air Force. He served until 1956.
   He graduated from Oregon Technical School in 1960. He purchased a service station and moved to Wallowa. In 1964 he purchased Wallowa Valley Oil Company in Enterprise; he operated both businesses until 1985. He and his wife worked for Columbia Helicopter starting in 1987 and retiring in 1994.
   He was a member of the Enterprise Elks Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding, reading and visiting.
   Survivors include: wife Shirley; sons Dennis of Memphis, Tenn., and Roger of Yamhill; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Earl of Newberg and Berle of Washougal, Wash.; sisters, Gladys Biffle of Castle Rock, Colo., Viola Miller of Logan, Utah, Nina Borroz of Vancouver, Wash., and Geneva Hodges and Francis Tessman, both of Newberg; and many nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clarence, Scott, Elwood, Clyde and Harold; and sister Lula Hampton.
   A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. April 10 at Yamhill Christian Church.

Larry D. Gay
   Former Newberg resident Larry D. Gay died March 21, 2004, at a Portland Hospital. He was 52.
   He was born Feb. 16, 1952, to Louis and Arlene (Fitting) Gay in Portland. He grew up and attended school in Newberg. During high school he played football, was on the wrestling team, and sang in the high school choir. He started working as a welder in 1974 and was a member of the Boilermakers Local 72. On March 3, 1979, he married Hannah Loader in Hillsboro and they moved to Cornelius for eight years before moving to Hillsboro. He retired in May 2003, and they continued living in Hillsboro.
   He enjoyed sports, umpired softball and baseball and was a fan of Glencoe High School football. He was active with Boy Scouts, including the Christmas tree fund-raisers, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed practical jokes, animals and gardening. He also played guitar and sang with barbershop quartets and in concerts.
   Survivors include: wife Hannah of Hillsboro; sons, Thomas, Michael, William and Todd, all of Hillsboro; mother Arlene Gay of Newberg; grandmother Ruby May Norquist of Bremerton, Wash.; brothers, Eddie of Portland and Brian of Newberg; sisters, Lois Braden of Oregon City, Helen Price of Snohomish, Wash., and Kathy Gay of Newberg.
   Chapel viewing and visitation hours will be from 8 a.m. until the memorial service at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor Joel Hjertstedt officiating.

Oliver ‘Ollie’ A. Schoening
   Dundee resident Oliver “Ollie” Adolar Schoening died March 20, 2004, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 89.
   He was born June 23, 1914, to Joseph and Josephine (Clark) Schoening in Cape May, N.J. He attended elementary and high school in El Segundo, Calif., and furthered his education at Santa Monica Junior College. He married Alpha Sanders of Pacoima, Calif., on Nov. 19, 1937, in El Segundo, Calif. He worked at Lockheed Aircraft for 38 years, starting as a riveter, then moving into supervision and later as a budget analyst. In 1986 the couple moved to Oregon, where he maintained a small Christmas Tree farm in the hills of Dundee, and where they have since resided.
   He enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing, skin diving and rock hunting. He was a member of the Luelling chapter of the Home Orchard Society.
   Survivors include: wife Alpha of Dundee; sons, Clinton of Wilsonville and Stanley of Sitka, Ala.; brother Eugene of Mariposa, Calif.; sister Ariebeth Shaw of Martinez, Calif.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by son, Christopher.
   Committal is private.

Ronald L. Riegsecker
   Ronald L. Riegsecker died March 22, 2004, at his home in Middlebury, Ind. He was 48.
   He was born Nov. 8, 1955, to Glenn and Esther (Graber) Riegsecker in Goshen, Ind. He married Kathleen Nisly, who was raised and educated in Newberg, on July 2, 1983, in Goshen, Ind. He worked as a salesman for St. Joseph Paper and Packaging in South Bend, Ind., for more than 14 years.
   He was a member of the Clinton Frame Mennonite Church.
   Survivors include: wife Kathleen of Middlebury, Ind.; daughters, Maria and Krista Riegsecker, both of Middlebury; sons, Matthew, Joel and Nathaniel of Middlebury; sister Sheryl of Middlebury; and brothers, Randall of Shipshewana, Ind., and Robert of Goshen, Ind.
   He was preceded in death by brother Rodney.
   Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) in Goshen, as well as the hour preceding the funeral. The service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Crusaders for Christ African Ministries.

Margaret Magee
   Newberg resident Margaret Magee died March 21, 2004. She was 74.
   She was born Aug. 21, 1929, to Robert and Maxine Dickson in Albany, where she completed high school before pursuing a teaching degree from George Fox College (now George Fox University). She married Maurice Magee in 1957. They moved to Seattle. She spent her final years at Friendsview Manor.
   She enjoyed supporting her husband’s hobbies and civic involvement, as well as gardening, cooking, canning and preserving. She was a prolific crocheter, her family said.
   Survivors include: sons, Tim and Thomas; daughter-in-law Doreen; grandchildren, Connor and Kiaja.
   She was preceded in death by husband Maurice; daughter Laura; and granddaughter, Sarah, Rachel and April.
   A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Newberg Friends Church.

Dolores L. Bustamonte
   St. Paul native Dolores Louise Bustamonte died of cancer March 14, 2004. She was 73.
   She was born March 26, 1931, in St. Paul, where she was raised on a Century Farm. She married Claudio Bustamonte on Nov. 5, 1955. They ran Peono Fresh Farm Produce until 1989. They moved to Amity, where she began a 13-year stint working for Providence Home Health Care. He preceded her in death in December 1996. She moved to Hubbard that year.
   She was a member of the St. Paul Historical Society and St. Paul Catholic Church.
   Survivors include: daughters, Carmen Wallace of Hubbard, Sylvia Whisenant of Valdese, N.C., and Christy Pruitt of Canby; sons, Claudio of Milford, Calif., and Carlos of St. Paul; sister Luella Martel of Woodburn and seven grandchildren.
   A funeral service was held Wednesday at the St. Paul Catholic Church. Burial followed at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Willamette Valley Hospice or American Cancer Society.

H. Loren Parrett
   H. Loren Parrett died March 14, 2004, in Mountain Home, Idaho, after a long illness. She was 77.
   She was born Feb. 17, 1927, to Francis and Lela (Young) Burch in Turpin, Okla. She moved with the family to Sherwood in 1935. She married Edward Canty in 1944 and divorced after their daughter was born. She married William Parrett. She lived in Oregon for 22 years, later moving to Boise. Her husband preceded her in death in 1986, at which time she moved to Mountain Home.
   Survivors include: daughter, Bobbi Topacio of Juneau, Alaska; sons, William of Mountain Home and Jack of Culebra, Puerto Rico; brother Dean of Vancouver, Wash.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and brother LeRoy.
   No services will be held at her request.

Donald C. Beseau
   Donald Charles Beseau died March 16, 2004, at a Wilsonville care facility. He was 87.
   He was born May 4, 1916, to Charles and Alice (Huebner) Beseau in Green Bay, Wis., where he received his early education and graduated from college. He served in the Army and was honorably discharged. Most of his working years were spent as a federal meat inspector and through his employment he traveled most of the United States. He enjoyed several trips to Europe and Cuba, as well In 1999, he relocated to Oregon and made his home in Wilsonville, where he has since resided.
   He was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and enjoyed most sports, including golf.
   Survivors include several nieces and nephews, some of whom live in Newberg and Dundee: Marleen, Shirley, Connie, Alice, Janet, Mark and Bruce.
   Committal will be March 23 at Nicolet Memorial Gardens in Green Bay.

Aloah N. Williams
   Aloah Naomi Williams died March 15, 2004, at Friendsview Retirement Community. She was 86.
   She was born the second of 18 children on Jan. 7, 1918, to William and Audney (Nelson) Bates in Caldwell, Idaho. She graduated from Caldwell High School in 1936. She married Macy Williams on Feb. 5, 1938, near Caldwell, where they made their first home. She worked at the Idaho Department Store. They moved to Newberg in 1968 and spent their retirement years at Spalding Oaks. Her husband preceded her in death in 1995, at which time she moved to Friendsview Manor.
   She was a member of Newberg Friends Church and was active in the nursery, choir and social committee. She was talented with dried floral arrangements, family members said, and enjoyed putting her skills to work during the George Fox University Auxiliary Christmas bazaar.
   Survivors include: sons, Gary of Seattle and Don of Pasco, Wash.; daughters, Tanya of Richland, Wash., and Tami of Loveland, Colo.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; seven sisters; six brothers; and several nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by husband Macy, parents Will and Audney, two brothers and two sisters.
   A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Newberg Friends Church.

Francis Robinson
   Francis Robinson died of natural causes March 2, 2004, in Senora, Calif. She was 84.
   She was born March 6, 1919, in Webster, S.D. She married George Robinson on July 24, 1937. They moved in 1980 to Alaska.
   She enjoyed many aspects of Alaska, including outdoor recreation with her husband, fishing, having visitors and talking about the state. She also enjoyed flower gardens and family gatherings.
   Survivors include: sister Deloris Eberheard of Newberg; brother Edward Baisch of Newberg; children, Arthur Robinson of Sheridan, Joyce Landfriend of Napa, Calif., Karen Robinson of Vancouver, Wash., Connie Hawkins of Senora, Calif., Leroy Robinson of Keno and Denis Robinson of Palmer, Alaska; 18 grandchildren and more than 15 great-grandchildren.
   She was was preceded in death by her husband, George.
   Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. April 3 at the Keno  cemetery. Memorial potluck will follow at the Keno Fire Hall.

Christian F. Schmidt
   Christian Fredrick Schmidt died March 8, 2004, at a Newberg care facility. He was 88.
   He was born April 28, 1915, to Peter and Margaret (Wiggins) Schmidt in Anthon, Iowa. After attending school he began farming. He married Willamina Hair on June 29, 1941, in Anthon. He farmed for several years in Movile, Iowa, and also resided in Sioux City, Iowa. In 1956 he moved his family to Rainer and in 1958 to Newberg, where he remained. His wife preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 2001.
   Known as Fritz to his family, and also responding to Chris, he enjoyed cars. Among his favorites were a pair of Novas, but he was most known around Newberg for driving around a 1962 Impala, which a Newberg family is restoring. He also enjoyed meeting friends for lunch at the senior center, where he often volunteered, as well as watching Christian television and reading the Bible.
   Survivors include: sons, James of Lakebay, Wash., Charles of Palo Verde, Ariz., and David of Everett, Wash.; daughter Margo Mason of Sherwood; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by daughter Connie Sue, as well as all of his brothers and sisters.
   A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Attrell’s Newberg Chapel.

Helen L. Criswell
   Helen Lucile Criswell of Newberg died March 14, 2004, at Friendsview Manor. She was 81.
   She was born Sept. 25, 1922, to Benjamin and Gena (Orchutt) Cooley in Portland. She was raised and educated in the Sellwood area of Portland, graduating from Girls Poly in 1940. She attended Willamette University in Salem. She served in the U.S. Navy as a WAVE during World War II as a storekeeper based in Georgia.
   She married William Parker in July 1947 in Portland. After their marriage ended she lived in Portland until 1960, at which time she moved to Milwaukie. She married Thomas Criswell in July 1963 and moved to Newberg, where she resided until 1972. She worked at George Fox College (now George Fox University). She also worked for Portland Wire and Iron, Portland State University and the state of Oregon Children’s Services Division. She moved to King City in 1988 and in 1992 to Friendsview Manor in Newberg.
   She enjoyed sewing and made dance and baton costumes for her daughters and others. She enjoyed crocheting, musicals, camping, fishing, playing board games and puzzles. She was a member of the Moreland Presbyterian Church.
   Survivors include: son Gareth Parker of Portland; daughters, Janet Stark of McMinnville and Karen Douthit of Boise; brother Benjamin Cooley of Woodburn; sisters, Marjorie Knotts of Medford and Erline Kathka of Woodburn; and seven grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by husband Thomas Criswell.
   Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors in McMinnville. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the at Friendsview Manor health center sun room.

March 13, 2004
Joe Mankowski
   Joe Mankowski of Dundee died March 6, 2004, at a Sherwood care facility. He was 87.
   He was born Jan. 15, 1917, to Felix and Marya (Zawislka) Mankowski in Bayonne, New Jersey. He grew up and received his education in Newark, N.J. During World War II, he served in the Navy as an aviation radioman first class in Blimp Squadron One. He moved from Santa Anna, Calif., to Tillamook and back to Del Mar and Santa Anna, Calif., before he finally ended his  naval service on the east coast.
   On July 4, 1944, he married Emily Craven in Los Angeles. The couple moved to Portland in 1947 and survived the Vanport Flood. The family relocated to southeast Portland where they made their home for 23 years, before moving to Beaverton for 18 years. He worked for Hewlett-Packard’s medical division as a medical equipment salesman for 22 years. In 1981, they moved to Dundee, where they have since resided.
   He was an avid reader, and enjoyed photography and fishing.
   Survivors include: wife Emily of Dundee; daughter Nancy Shigeno of Tualatin; sons, Jim and Bill of Portland and Paul of Marietta, Ga.; brother Edward of Newark, N.J.; sister Frances Ringled of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by two sisters.
   Committal is private at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland.

Laird E. Haldorson
   Laird Edward Haldorson died in a house fire March 7, 2004, in Newberg. He was 46.
   He was born Jan. 8, 1958, to Ralph and LeArta (Adams) Haldorson in Eugene. He moved to Florence, where he received his general equivalency diploma. He worked at his parents’ seafood market and was a crewman on his brother’s charter fishing boat. He was a member of the Florence Rural Fire Department and of a dirt bike club.
   He married Sheryl Kimbal. They divorced in 1982, at which time he moved to Newberg. He was a volunteer for the Dundee Fire Department until he moved out of the district. He married Tambi Lee. They divorced. He held various occupations, including truck driving and at a nursery.
   He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
   Survivors include: daughter Andie of Florence; son Norman of Newberg; two grandchildren; parents Ralph and LeArta; brother Larry of Yamhill; and sisters, Helen Kersting of Oregon City and Karla Bannett of Newberg.
   A private memorial service will be held at his parents’ home.

Donald J. Slaughter Jr.
   Donald James Slaughter Sr. died March 8, 2004, at his home in Dundee. He was 77.
   He was born May 9, 1926, to James and Bertha (Wilson) Slaughter in Chaffee, Mo., where he grew up and attended school. At 17 he enlisted in the Navy. He served during World War II in the South Pacific and was in the Battle of Layte Gulf in 1944. After his honorable discharge he returned to Missouri and worked at several different jobs. On March 5, 1949, he married Doris Huffman in Midland, Texas, and they moved to Oregon. In 1950 they were in Grants Pass, moving to    Sacramento in 1952. In 1966 they moved to the Newberg area. He worked for Slaughter’s Concrete, retiring at the age of 62. In 1991 they moved to Dundee, where they were living at the time of his death.
   He was a life member of the Newberg post of the Veteran’s of Foreign War (VFW) and was a collector of guns, knives, tobacco cans and books, especially Naval books. He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren.
   Survivors include: wife Doris of Dundee; sons, Donald Jr. of Camas, Wash., and Dennis of Newberg; daughter Debra Erickson of Wasilla, Ala.; brother Lloyd of Bakersfield, Calif.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Rankin and Gary and Kenneth Slaughter, and sister Vesta Lyttle.
   A graveside memorial with committal was held Friday at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland with Brian Slaughter, a grandson, officiating.

Grace L. Petry
   Longtime Newberg resident Grace Lucille Petry died March 9, 2004, at a local care facility. She was 93.
   She was born May 31, 1910, to Michael and Anna (Quammen) Petry in Plaza, N.D. She received a bachelor’s degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., in 1931. In 1966, she received her masters degree at the University of Oregon. She taught in public education. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
   Survivors include: nieces, Mary Ann Brock of Aiken, S.C., and Wynne Hansen of Prairie Village, Kan.
   She was preceded in death by sisters Fern Rowe and Lillian Luskow.
   No service will be held at the request of the family. Arrangements are in the care of Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel.

Oswald G. LaCoste
   Oswald George LaCoste died of natural causes March 4, 2004, in Newberg. He was 83.
   He was an orphan who went on to professions including musician, electrician and welder and avocations that included gardener and chef. In his words left to his family he said he a born again Christian and “going home.”
   Survivors include one son and one granddaughter.
   No service will be held at his request.


March 10, 2004
Tony Rieger
   Tony Rieger of Newberg died March 3, 2004, in Newberg. He was 83.
   He was born April 20, 1920, to Mathias and Anna (Zetta) Rieger in Ruma, Yugoslavia. He finished his education and apprenticeship in Stuttgart, Germany. On Jan. 23, 1939, he married Julianna Nagel in Ruma, Yugoslavia. He was drafted into the German Army, where he served from 1941 to 1945. For the next 10 years the couple lived in Austria, where he worked as a mason. In 1955 they moved to Los Angeles, where he continued his career as a mason and involved himself in soccer clubs. They relocated in 1976 to Newberg, where they have since resided. He worked for the Tigard School District as head custodian until he retired in 1986.
   He enjoyed music and played several instruments, as well as the outdoors and his car, a 1972 Dodge Demon, which his son and grandson are restoring.

   A funeral service was held Tuesday at St. Peter Catholic Church, Newberg with Father Jim Nibler officiating. A committal service followed at Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Alma L. Murphy
   Alma Louise Murphy died March 5, 2004, at her Newberg Home. She was 88.
   She was born Sept. 17, 1915, to James and Maud (Browning) Archer in Cottonwood Falls, Kan. She moved with her family in 1917 to Wilbur, Wash., where she attended school. She was active in sports, school politics, theater and academics. She was also valedictorian of her class.
   After graduation she married Paul Patrick of Spartansburg, S.C. He died during the construction of the Hanford Plant in Kennewick, Wash. In 1946 Alma married G.J. “Joe” Murphy. He preceded her in death in December 1990. She worked as a cook at a sorority at Oregon State University for several years. She also worked at Friendsview Manor for many years and was known as the “Pie Lady”.
   Survivors include: daughters, Paula Nelsen and Carolyn Altringer of Newberg; son Michael Murphy of Clackamas; sisters, Irene Nelson and Waneta Lingelbach of Newport, Idaho, and Barbara Freeman of Priest River, Idaho; 13 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
   A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel with Pastor Andy Altringer officiating. Concluding services are private at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Agnes “Lois” Tish
   Agnes “Lois” Tish died March 6, 2004, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 90.
   She was born Nov. 7, 1913, to John and Edna (Carey) Tish in Caldwell, Idaho. She graduated from Greenleaf Friends Academy, attended the Portland Bible Institute, and graduated from Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho. She received library training from the University of Washington. Her first teaching job was in a one-room school in Leadore, Idaho. She later taught at Homedale, Idaho.
   Most of her career was spent as a librarian at two colleges: Cascade College in Portland and Linfield College in McMinnville. She was a member of several different churches in the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends and was played a part in starting the McMinnville Friends Church. In her later years she resided at Friendsview Manor in Newberg.
   She was an avid gardener and shared her harvest of vegetables and flowers with others. She traveled to the Holy Land and Europe, among other sites and countries. She enjoyed sewing, weaving and other types of handwork.
   Survivors include: brother Alva Tish of Greenleaf, Idaho. and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Esther Delamarter.
   A funeral service was held Tuesday at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel with pastors Dan Stahlnecker and Marvin Kistler officiating. A concluding service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell, Idaho, with Pastor Steve Jahn officiating.

Betty J. “BJ” Mitchell
   Betty Jean “BJ” Mitchell died Feb. 23, 2004, of breast cancer in Indio, Calif. She was 57.
  She was born July 24, 1946, to James and Shirley Stuart in  Medford. She graduated from Glide High School in 1964 and attended Southern Oregon State College (now Southern Oregon University) in Ashland until 1966. She worked for the U.S. Forest Service from 1969 to 1976, often in lookout towers at Walker Mountain, Pig-Iron and Cinnamon Butte. She was an Oregon State Park ranger from 1979 to 1999 at Bullards Beach, Washburn, Detroit Lake, Tumalo and Champoeg State Park.
   She enjoyed hiking, cross-country skiing and camping, as well as spending time with friends and family.
   Survivors include: mother Shirley Stuart of Albany; sister Peggy Schultz of Albany; children, Anjeanette Russell of Indio, Steve of Klamath Falls, Kimberly of Tigard and Ernest of Coos Bay; and grandson Steve Mitchell Jr.
   She was preceded in death by her father, James Stuart.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at St. Peter Catholic Church, 2315 N. Main St.

Donald J. Davidson
   Donald J. Davidson died Feb. 29, 2004, at his home in St. Paul. He was 78.
   He was born in St. Paul and lived there his entire life. He purchased from his grandfather the property that is now Century Farm. He served for 22 years as a board member for the St. Paul High School District. He was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church, serving on its first parish council. He also served on the church restoration committee following the Spring Break Quake. He was also part owner of Ernst Hardware and Valley Harvester Service. He donated to the St. Paul Volunteer Fire Department its first ambulance.
   He enjoyed fishing, clam digging, attending grandchildrens’ sporting events, collecting and preserving family antiques and restoring Model A and Model T cars. He also raised buffalo.
   Survivors include: sons, Larry of West Linn, Mike of St. Paul, Fred of Beaverton and Cork of Graham, Wash.; daughters, Mary Pohlschneider and Kathy Mullen of St. Paul and Shirley Opitz of Scholls; 21 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert of Boring and Ray of St. Paul; sisters, Patricia Ferschweiler of St. Louis, Mary Mitzlaff of Richland, Wash., and Laura Zollner of Mt. Angel; and aunt Zella Teir of Wichita Falls, Texas.
   He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, in 1999, son Gary in 1973 and brother Jim in 2004.
   A funeral mass was held Wednesday at the St. Paul Catholic Church.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul Fire District new ambulance fund or the St. Paul Cemetery Association.

John D. Hoy
   Former Newberg resident John Donald Hoy died Feb. 29, 2004. He was 73.
   He was born Feb. 2, 1931, to Sol and Robert Hoy in Ft. Pierre, S.D. The family moved to Portland in 1942 and to Newberg in 1945. He was an all-state basketball player in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He married Jo Colony in 1953. She preceded him in death in 1973.
   He married Jerrie Ferguson. He worked for State Farm Insurance for nearly 40 years, starting in 1957, transferring to Beaverton in 1964 and retiring in 1996. He and his brother bred greyhound dogs, one of which won the world championship in 1982.
   Survivors include: wife Jerrie; sons, Doug and Dave; stepdaughter Theresa McAdoo; four grandchildren; sisters Harriet Sweeney of Portland, Judith Wolfe of Oxnard, Calif., and Myrna Royal of Vancouver, Wash.; and brothers, Bob of Bellview, Wash., and Dick of Newberg.
A wake was held Friday in Beaverton.

Leila I. Stryffeler
   Leila Irene Stryffeler died March 1, 2004, at a Portland hospital. She was 66.
   She was born July 9, 1937, to Marvin and Edna (Stayton) Ornduff in Newberg. She attended school here and lived on a Chehalem Mountain strawberry farm, where she worked in the fields for her father. She married Bob Stryffeler in 1973 in Vancouver, Wash. She was a homemaker all of her life and enjoyed baking.
   Survivors include: husband, Bob Stryffeler of Newberg; son Randy Seidel of Newberg; and brothers, Albert Ornduff of Molalla and Butch Ornduff of Aurora.
   A funeral service was held Friday at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel  with Pastor Bruce Sloan officiating. A concluding service followed at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Laurel.

Charmaine M. Balcom
   Charmaine Marie Balcom died Feb. 29, 2004, at her Dundee home. She was 62.
   She was born June 4, 1941, to Arthur and Mabel (Enger) Moe  in Sumas, Wash. She graduated from Nooksack Valley High School in Nooksack, Wash. She attended Western Washington State University in Bellingham for one year and Broadway Edison Technical School in Seattle from 1960 to 1961.
   On April 7, 1962, she married Bruce Balcom in Seattle. From 1961 to 1968, she worked at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Seattle. For the next 18 years she was a homemaker and in 1980 the couple made their home in Dundee, where they have since resided.
   In 1986 she started as a manager and buyer for Yamhill’s Gallery and Gifts in Newberg. She worked for a year, starting in 1990, for the Made in Oregon store in Tigard. From 1993 to 1994 she worked as a retail clerk at the 1893 Shop in Newberg.
   Her husband preceded her in death in September 1995. She became an owner/operator of a woman’s retail clothing store in McMinnville in 1997 and retired in 1999.
   She was an organist, pianist and music director for various churches. She was a Sunday school teacher and volunteered at schools and hospitals. She enjoyed the outdoors and walked almost every day. She climbed Mt. St. Helens with her  brothers, Stan and Maynard, and she also climbed Mt. Rainier.
   Survivors include: daughters, Robin of Oregon City and Erin of Portland; and brothers, Maynard Moe of Sumas, Stan Moe of Puyallup, Wash., and Arthur Moe of Mariposa, Calif.
   Viewing and visitation will be from 8 to 10 a.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. at the chapel with Pastor Tom Struck officiating. Committal will follow at Dundee Pioneer Cemetery.

Georgie E. Wilson
   Georgie Ethel Wilson died Feb. 27, 2004, at her Newberg home. She was 81.
   She was born Jan. 14, 1923, to Frank and Ethel (Case) Crites in Newberg. She grew up and attended school in Newberg. She attended Northwest Christian College in Eugene and lived one year in Chicago. In her younger years she attended the Baptist Church, then the First Christian Church and as a young woman became a member of the Newberg Church of the Nazarene. It was there, at a church function, that she met her future husband, John “Jack” Wilson, in November 1962. They became engaged on Valentine’s Day 1963 and were married June 1 of that year. They made their home in Newberg. He preceded her in death in April 1986.
   She enjoyed keeping her home, cooking, flower gardening, craft works, writing poetry and traveling. She supported the church for 40 years. She also enjoyed participating in a work and witness team to Guatemala, Mexico.
   Survivors include: sister Marylou Mussraco of Portland; niece Christine McCullough of San Francisco; nephew Bradley McCullough and numerous cousins.
   A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Ed Nichols officiating. A concluding service will follow at noon at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Edith J. Shafer-Trent
   Edith J. Shafer-Trent of Dayton died Feb. 25, 2004, at the Oregon Health and Sciences University Hospital in Portland. She was 49.
   She was born March 8, 1954, to Archie and Mildred (Peffer) Shafer and was raised in Dayton. She attended Linfield College. She settled with her three daughters in Sacramento, Calif. She returned to Dayton in 1989 and started working as a manager of Wendy’s at different locations. She married Larry Trent on Aug. 10, 1990, in Dayton.
   She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, reading romance novels, and arts and crafts. Her coffee cup collection had grown to 1,000 mugs strong.
   Survivors include: husband Larry Trent of Dayton; mother Mildred Shafer of Dayton; daughters, Wendy Marsh of Dayton, Amy Bishop of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Carrie Smith of Portland; stepdaughter Danielle Arendt of Sheridan; brothers, Donald of Chicago and Danny of Dayton; sisters, Laura Mather of Sweet Home, Shirley Smith of Lakeview, Ellene Poh of McMinnville and Sheila Peterson of Monroe; and four   grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her father, Archie Shafer.
   A funeral service was held Feb. 28 at Dayton Christian Church with the Rev. Kyle French officiating.
