Andrew I. Davidson
Andrew Irvine Davidson of Newberg died Dec. 21, 2006, in a car
accident near Carlton. He was 67.
He was born Nov. 27, 1939, to Jesse and Ruth (Dickason) Davidson in
Buffalo, N.Y. He attended Princeton University before transferring
to and graduating from the University of Michigan. He married Julie
Anne Mitchell on Dec. 21, 1966, in Lansing, Mich.
He worked as a software engineer and resided in Minnesota and
California before settling in Newberg, his home for 27 years.
He was a handyman and enjoyed studying history and genealogy.
Survivors include: daughter Laura Davidson and brother Jim.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Laura; daughter
Kathryn and wife Julie on Dec. 12, 2006.
No services are planned. Disposition is by cremation.
Julie A. Davidson
Julie Anne Davidson died Dec. 12, 2006, of lung cancer at her
Newberg home. She was 61.
She was born March 20, 1945, in Columbus, Ohio, to Robert and
Bernice (Flanigan) Mitchell. She grew up in Napoleon, Ohio, and
attended the University of Michigan.
She married Andrew Davidson in 1966. They lived in Minnesota and
California before settling in Newberg.
She enjoyed cooking and gardening. She belonged to a variety of
organizations for children’s education, including the Oregon
Association for the Talented and Gifted.
Survivors include: daughter Laura Davidson; brother Tom Mitchell;
and sisters Connie and Sandy Mitchell.
She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter Kathryn.
No services are planned. Disposition was by cremation.
Nellie R. Adler
Nellie Ruth Adler died Dec. 22, 2006, at Friendsview Retirement Center.
She was 87.
She was born Nellie Hoots on Oct. 19, 1919, in Galesburg, Ill. She
attended Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee, Ill., graduating in
1947.
She majored in business administration and worked for several
companies in Illinois before moving to Seattle in 1959, where she
worked for Boeing and the Penco Financial Center. She married
Clayton Adler in Seattle in 1959.
She enjoyed boating with her husband and friends, gardening and
photography.
She and her husband moved to Friendsview in 1985.
Survivors include: sister Esther Olson of Illinois and several
cousins, nieces and nephews.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1996.
A graveside service was held Dec. 28 at Valley View Memorial Park
in Newberg.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Friendsview Retirement

Esther E. Ashton
Esther Ethlynn Ashton of Newberg died of pneumonia on Dec. 15,
2006. She was 82.
She was born Sept. 2, 1922, in Detroit, Mich., to Toivo and Ollila
Espo.
She married Elton Ashton on Feb. 6, 1947. He preceded her in death
in 1975.
Survivors include their sons, David and Paul Ashton.
John T. Meade
Former Newberg resident John Timothy Meade died Dec. 11, 2006, in
Gillette, Wyo. He was 78.
He was born May 25, 1928, in Wellington, Colo., to Reginald and
Alice (Mortensen) Meade. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in
1945, and was stationed in postwar Japan. In 1950, he met and
married Delores Clemetson in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho.
He worked as a road builder and heavy equipment operator, and lived
in several western states. He and his family resided in Newberg
during the 1970s. His road construction business also took him to
Vietnam and the Marshall Islands for contract work. In 1990, he
retired from construction, but continued to work as a maintenance
man until 1999.
He enjoyed flying small planes, driving stock cars and telling
stories.
Survivors include: wife Delores of Gillette; sons, Rodney and
Randall of Newberg, Eldon of Spokane, Wash., and Lyndon of Gillette;
daughter Debra Hardrath of Tooele, Utah; brother Alfred Meade of Nez
Perce, Idaho; sisters, Ethel Drapeau of Coeur D’Alene and Wilma
Carter of Eugene; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
A graveside service was held Dec. 14 at the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in
Gillette.

Kenneth H. Wright
Kenneth Harold Wright of Newberg died Dec. 14, 2006. He was 83.
He was born March 17, 1923, in International Falls, Minn., to
Marion and Ruby (McCullum) Wright, and grew up in northern
Minnesota. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army from
1943 to 1945 in North Africa and Italy, and in the U.S. Navy from
1945 to 1949 in Hawaii and Seattle.
In 1949, he married Beverly Denman. They divorced in 1979, and he
was remarried to Bertie Lee in 1981.
He worked as a farm laborer and wood cutter until 1960, when he
purchased a farm in the Newberg area. He raised pigs and chickens,
and sat on the board of directors for the Oregon State Broiler
Growers Association, where he helped implement “Grown in Oregon”
labeling.
In 1970, he moved to Minnesota, returning to Newberg two years
later. He continued to work for local industry until retiring in
1985.
He was active in the FFA and Boy Scouts in Newberg.
Survivors include: sons, Patrick of Newberg, Kelley of Yamhill and
Kevin of Portland; daughters, Christine Wright and Linda Breaux of
Whidby Island, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son Michael, and his second wife,
Bertie Wright.
A private memorial service was held by the family.

Kenneth Simpson
Kenneth Simpson died Dec. 22, 2006, at a local foster home. He was
92.
He was born Sept. 17, 1914, in Independence, Kan., to Ernest and
Grace (Crumine) Simpson. The family moved to Newberg when he was
young, and he graduated from Newberg High School.
He earned an associate’s degree from Oregon State University and
enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in New
Guinea and the Philippines, earning a Bronze Star and the rank of
sergeant first class. He was honorably discharged in July 1945.
He married Jane Reitha of Portland on Feb. 14, 1948.
Returning to Newberg, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service, and
served as postmaster of the Newberg Post Office, retiring in 1976.
He was a member of the Newberg VFW, the McMinnville Elks, the
American Legion and the Newberg First Presbyterian Church.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Following his retirement,
he and his wife traveled extensively around Oregon and the coast.
He was preceded in death by his wife in September 2005.
Survivors include: daughters, Mary Jo Mazzella of Scappoose, Reitha
Weeks of Seattle and Becky Simpson of Newberg; sisters, Irene Dotson
of Ventura, Calif., and Ruthie McCormick of Redmond; brother, J.
Arthur of Golden, Ala.; four grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 28 at the First
Presbyterian Church of Newberg. A private burial service will be
held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Delmar W. Hodges
Delmar Weston Hodges died Dec. 17, 2006. He was 87.
He was born Sept. 26, 1919, in Newberg to Neil and Pearl (McClerry)
Hodges. He attended Newberg High School. He married Minnie Beasley
in Vancouver on Sept. 27, 1940. He served in Europe during World War
II. He took over his father’s gravel business, later selling to the
Crabtree Sand and Gravel Company.
The couple lived in Newberg, where Hodges worked as a logger and
truck driver and with Portland General Electric
He enjoyed dancing, bowling, and vacationing in Reno. He was a
member of the Elks Lodge and the PGE company bowling team.
Survivors include: son Rick Hodges of Newberg; daughter Kimra
Peffers of Newberg; sisters, Evelyn Eddens of Newberg and Marjorie
Morse of Portland; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
His wife Minnie preceded him in death in September.
A memorial service was held Dec. 21 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral
Home.

Carleta F. Smith
Carleta Fern Smith died Dec. 1, 2006, at a local nursing home. She
was 90.
She was born Dec. 1, 1916, in Clinton, Mo., to Roy and Laura (Siever)
Simmons.
Survivors include: son Terry of Casa Grande, Ariz.; and daughter
Sandra Esposito of McMinnville.
Her husband Paul Smith preceded her in death in 1983.
A graveside service was held Dec. 21 at Willamette National
Cemetery.

Doris A. Lewis
Doris Adele Lewis died Dec. 20, 2006, at a Newberg care facility.
She was 90.
She was born March 18, 1916, in Brooklyn, New York, to Albert and
Carrie (Merklee) Perine. She grew up and attended school in New
York, including one year of college.
On May 23, 1943, she married Kenneth Lewis. The couple lived in
Atlanta, where he was the director of Fernbank Children’s Museum.
They moved to Oregon in 1950, settling in Newberg in 1952.
She worked as a secretary for the Oregon Timber Council Lumber
Trust until retiring at age 65. She and her husband later traveled
to England, Mexico and Hawaii.
She and her husband shared a love for dogs and they owned Fernbank
Kennel in Newberg, where they raised several breeds. She was a
member of the Portland Kennel Club and Dog Fanciers of Oregon and
was also a dog show steward.
Survivors include: son Kenneth of Newberg; granddaughter Carrie
Lawson and grandson Nole Lawson.
Her husband Kenneth preceded her in death in 1994.
At her request, no service will be held. Arrangements are in care
of Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel.

Ada Dysinger
Ada Dysinger of Hubbard died Dec. 7, 2006, at a Mt. Angel nursing
home. She was 83.
She was born Dec. 17, 1922, in Yamhill to John and Mary Ann
(Larkin) Welsh. She lived there until she was 15 before moving to
The Dalles.
On Oct. 8, 1944, she married Arthur Dysinger and moved to
California, then to Missouri, where the couple lived for the next 17
years.
In 1961, they moved to Rainer, then to Canby and finally to
Hubbard, where she resided for the past 35 years. She worked as a
data processor for the First National Bank of Oregon.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing and spending time with
her family and grandchildren.
Survivors include: sons, Arthur of Portland, Maine, James of
Aurora, Paul of Donald and Howard of Hubbard; daughter Sue Mullen of
St. Paul; sister Lillian Davis of Oregon City; 15 grandchildren; 32
great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Art in 1999, son Charles,
brother John Welsh Jr. and seven sisters.
A private family service will be held at Pike Cemetery in Yamhill.

Joseph B. Erb
Joseph Benjamin Erb of Newberg died Dec. 11, 2006. He was 92.
He was born Aug. 31, 1914, in Deercreek, Okla., to Fredrick and
Emma (Wettendorf) Erb. He attended school there and worked on
several farms in the area before moving to Oregon in 1931. He worked
as a machine operator for Spaulding Pulp and Paper, Newberg Auto
Freight, Union Oil, Rex Nut and Hall’s Sheet Metal. He served in the
U.S. Army during World War II. He married Viola “Betty” Garrick on
Jan. 15, 1942, in Vancouver, Wash. They attended Newberg Church of
the Nazarene.
He enjoyed fishing and Sunday drives.
Survivors include: wife Betty of Newberg; sons, Ben and Doug of
Newberg; daughters, Sandy Hurliman of Pacific City and Linda Crowell
of Forest Grove; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and
three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Roy.
A funeral service was held Dec. 14, 2006, at Attrell’s Newberg
Chapel. It was followed by a committal service at Valley View
Memorial Park near Newberg.

Phyllis J. Sylvester
Phyllis Jean Sylvester of Dundee died Dec. 11, 2006. She was 82.
She was born Oct. 16, 1924, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Everett and
Rebecca (Cox) Knotts, and graduated from Lincoln High School (in Des
Moines) in 1943. She worked as a dental assistant an married Dale
Sylvester in 1943. They moved to Portland in 1948, where she worked
as a cashier for Sears and Montgomery Ward.
In 1957 she moved to Sunnyvale, Calif., returned to Newberg in
1960, and moved to Dundee in 2004. She worked as a cashier and
bookkeeper for several businesses, including Montgomery Ward in
McMinnville and the Newberg Christian Gospel Assembly.
She enjoyed baking and cake decorating, knitting, crocheting and
cross-stitching. She was a member of the Newberg Christian Gospel
Assembly Church and the Rural Homemakers.
Survivors include: husband Dale of Dundee; son Don of Newberg;
daughters, Dayna Ochsner of Dundee and Judy Turpen of Newberg;
sisters, Harriett Senecaut, Joan McNally and Ruth Gillaspie, all of
Newberg; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Peggy
Middlekauff, Beverly Baird and Patricia Senecaut; and granddaughter
Beth Lynn Turpen.
Visitation hours are noon to 6 p.m. today (Saturday) at Chapel of
Macy and Son Funeral Directors in McMinnville. A service will be
held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Christian Gospel Assembly.

Annabelle E. Brooks
Annabelle Edith Brooks died Dec. 2, 2006, at Newberg Care Home. She
was 88.
She was born Dec. 4, 1917, in Mt. Solo, Wash.. to Arthur and Edith
Peake, and grew up in Damascus and Gresham. She attended Gresham
High School, later earning her GED. In 1945, she married Frederick
Hoppe. The couple lived in the Gresham area, where she worked as a
florist. She was later divorced and remarried to Arthur Brooks in
1981.
She graduated from Oregon State University in her 50s and worked
for OSU Extension services as an agricultural consultant for six
years. She was an avid gardener, specializing in roses, and a member
of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 40 years.
Survivors include: son David Hoppe of Boring; daughters, Anita
Taylor of Loon Lake, Wash., Betty Namie of Newberg and Carol Adams
of North Carolina; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A funeral liturgy was held Dec. 7 at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home
in Gresham. Committal was at Damascus Cemetery.
Charles F. Celestine
Charles Francis Celestine died Dec. 2, 2006, at his Newberg home.
He was 72.
He was born Sept. 13, 1934, in Portland. He worked for Tektronix of
Beaverton in the shipping department. He later switched careers to
carpentry, doing home construction and remodeling. He married
Rebecca Balderstan in 1972. For the past 20 years the couple resided
in Newberg.
Survivors include: wife Rebecca of Newberg; sons Charles, James and
Chris; brother James; and one grandchild.
A memorial service was held Dec. 7 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral

Irene S. Haisch
Irene Swanson Haisch died Dec. 4, 2006. She was 87.
She was born Dec. 22, 1918, in Portland to Carl and Audrey Swanson.
She began playing the violin at age 8 and attended Washington High
School, where she played in the Portland Junior Symphony for four
years and served as assistant concert master. She also performed at
a number of church services and weddings.
In 1940, she graduated from Pacific College (now George Fox
University) and moved to Stanfield, where she taught high school
English, social studies and music.
She married Lewis Haisch in 1941 and settled in North Portland,
where he worked for Alcoa. They moved to Vancouver, Wash. following
the Vanport Flood of 1948.
After the birth of their first child in 1947, she worked as a
substitute teacher and later earned a degree in library science. She
retired as a librarian in the Vancouver School System in 1981. The
couple then retired to Newberg.
She attended Friends Churches in Vancouver, Wash., and Newberg,
among others. She was a Sunday school teacher and music director.
She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma sorority for female
educators and the Vancouver Women’s Club, where she served as
chaplain for 10 years. She and her husband were also active in the
Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, the Twin Rocks Conference Center and
established scholarship funds at George Fox University.
Survivors include: husband Lewis of Newberg; sister Florence Thomas
of Newberg; sons Carl of Greenville, N.C., and Keith of Dallas;
daughter Kathy Edwards of Portland; six grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.

Minda E. Hutchison
Minda Eloise “Mickey” Hutchison of Newberg died Nov. 30, 2006, at a
local hospital. She was 87.
She was born April 12, 1919, in Chetopa, Kan., to Charles and
Maybelle (Schaffer) Walker. Her family moved to Oregon in 1933,
living in several small towns before settling in Carlton in 1937. In
1937, she married Charlie Hutchison. The couple settled in Newberg
in the 1940s.
Survivors include: sons, Scott and Terry of Newberg, Robert of
Battle Mountain, Nev., and Raymond of Ontario; daughter Joyce Howell
of Dayton; brother J.C. Walker of Newberg; sisters, Charlene Jones
of Sherwood and Dolly Greenland of Cathlamet, Wash.; nine
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Newton.
A memorial service was held Dec. 5 in Attrell’s Newberg

Laurel D. Laux
Laurel Deane “Dee” (Dutton) Laux, who has family in the area, died
Nov. 26, 2006, in Olympia, Wash. She was 60.
She was born May 10, 1946, in Myrtle Point to Clarence and Betty
(Sloan) Dutton. She graduated from North Thurston High School in
1946 in Olympia. She enjoyed sports and played on the Evergreen
softball team, and was active in youth activities at her church.
Survivors include: son Richard “Tony” Laux of Olympia; stepson
Johnnie Laux of Olympia; stepdaughter Debra Laux of Olympia; brother
Richard Dutton of Dundee; sisters Jeannie Forman of Puyallup, Wash.,
Sandra Spriggs of Olympia and Martina Carlson of Anchorage, Ak.
She was preceded in death by her father Clarence and stepfather
Otto Sloan.
A memorial service was held Dec. 2 at Forest Funeral Home in
Olympia. A celebration of life followed at the local VFW hall.
George Renner
George Renner of Newberg died Nov. 25, 2006. He was 94.
He was born March 11, 1912, in Cornelius to Lorenz and Barbara (Kullman)
Renner. In 1956 he married Helen Merager. He worked as a bridge
contractor and was a member of the Shriners and Elks clubs.
Survivors include: wife Helen of Newberg; sons, Dude Alley of
Sheridan and Moine Alley of Oregon City; and sister Lydia Myers of
Newberg; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Nov. 28 in Milwaukie.

David F. Lugo
David F. Lugo died Nov. 26, 2006, at Chehalem Care Center in
Newberg after suffering from diabetes and coronary artery disease.
He was 91.
He was born March 25, 1915, in San Francisco to Ramon and Angelina
(Fraticelli) Lugo and attended school in Danville, Calif. He married
Leah in 1942. They raised two children before divorcing in 1960.
He was a minister at the Pentecostal Spanish Church in Bakersfield,
Calif., and in Sacramento until 1947. He also served in the U.S.
Coast Guard as a merchant marine during World War II, serving from
1945 to 1946 aboard the USS George H. Flanders.
After the war, he worked a variety of jobs before joining the U.S.
Postal Service in Sacramento in 1950. Retiring in 1981, he moved to
the Northwest to be near sisters Emily Weller of Lakeside and Angie
Sanchez of Medford.
He was a resident of Astor House, where he met Thelma Lofton, his
companion for the remainder of his life. He enjoyed golf, bowling,
dancing and sports of all kinds.
Survivors include: daughter Brenda Serrano; son David Jr.; stepson
Daniel Torres; ex-wife Leah; brothers Tony Lugo of California and
Paul Lugo of Texas; sisters Emily Weller and Angie Sanchez,
grand-daughter Isabella Serrano.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Emily Weller, Angie
Sanchez, Beatrice Sanchez and Sofie Lugo; brothers Raymond, Georgie
and Benjamin Lugo and Billy Sanchez; and grand-daughter Dion
Serrano.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Willamette
National Cemetery in Portland. A memorial will be held at 2:30 p.m.

Wrigley D. Luce
Wrigley David Luce died Nov. 25, 2006, in the Doernbechers neonatal
intensive care unit at Oregon Health and Sciences University
Hospital. He was 37 days old.
He was born Oct. 19, 2006, to Michael Luce and Kristi (Bernard)
Luce of Donald. Delivered prematurely at OHSU, he died of
complications from sepsis.
Survivors include: parents Michael and Kristi; brother Alex Dresser
of Tualatin; and sisters Courtney Dresser of Newberg and Amanda
Dresser-Luce of Donald.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at

Beverly Chance
Beverly June (Bowers) Chance died Nov. 28, 2006, at a Portland
hospital. She was 76.
She was born Jan. 10, 1930, in Coos Bay to Raleigh and Dorothy
(Newton) Bowers. She attended school in Coos Bay. In 1943, the
family moved to San Jose, Calif., where she attended high school and
San Jose State College, where she earned a degree in business. She
married Roy Chance on Oct. 30, 1964, having met him when he was an
usher at the Nazarene Church.
She worked as a business manager for the city of San Jose and
supervised the expansion of the library system from one to 18
branches. She was a member and Sunday School teacher at the Nazarene
Church.
She and her husband were frequent travelers, visiting Egypt,
Israel, Greece and Europe. She was also an avid reader with an
interest in Jewish and Biblical history.
In 1992, she and her husband moved to Newberg, joining the
Friendsview Retirement Community in 1993.
Survivors include: husband Roy of Newberg; son Lee of Tracey,
Calif.; daughter Nina Whalen of Stevenson, Calif.; six grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sister Hazel Bowers and brothers Glen
and Ray Bowers.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. today (Saturday) in
Newberg Nazarene Church with Pastor Ed Nichols officiating.
Committal will take place in San Jose, Calif.
James M. Dailey
James M. “Papa” Dailey of Sherwood died Nov. 26, 2006. He was 71.
He was born July 28, 1935, in Portland. His family moved to
Reedville and he graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1953. He
married Nancy Holland in 1957, and they settled in Sherwood in 1973,
where he worked as an industrial mechanic.
He enjoyed spending time with family, cooking and the outdoors.
Survivors include: wife Nancy of Sherwood; sons, James of Newberg
and Kevin of Sherwood; daughters, Kimberly Shaw of Tigard and Robin
Smith of Sherwood; sister Melody Zemke of Newberg; 10 grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.

Richard E. London
Richard E. London died Nov. 24, 2006, at his Newberg home. He was
78.
He was born April 17, 1928, in Canton, Ohio, to Emerson and Laura
(Lewis) London. He graduated from Canton High School. He enlisted in
the U.S. Army in 1947 and served in Japan until his honorable
discharge in 1950. He married Margie Umfleet in 1951. The couple
owned and operated London’s Lawn and Garden Store in Newberg. She
preceded him in death in 1985.
He married Fay Thomas in 1988. He was a volunteer with the Newberg
Fire Department and a member of the local VFW post.
Survivors include: wife Fay of Newberg; sons, Randy of Dundee and
Gary; daughter Jody Rosenberry of Dayton; stepson David of Newberg;
13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughters Debbie in 1972 and Connie in
1995.
A graveside service with military honors was held Dec. 1 in
Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Robert W. Dormer
Robert W. Dormer of Newberg died Nov. 23, 2006. He was 81.
He was born Sept. 5, 1925, in Yakima to Robert Sr. and Katie
(Palmer) Dormer. In 1943, he moved to Vancouver, Wash., to work in
the shipyards. He married Dorothy “Dottie” Zastrow in July 1945.
They settled in Newberg in 1957, where he went into business with
his brother as managers of the Newberg Bowl bowling alley.
Dormer ran the bowling alley for 21 years, selling the business
after the death of his brother. The bowling alley was destroyed in a
fire three-and-a-half years later.
Survivors include: wife Dottie of Newberg; daughters, Carol and
Terri; sister Ethel; four grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Zion
Lutheran Church.
Diane M. Eide
Diane Maureen Eide died Nov. 23, 2006, in Portland. She was 40.
She was born July 30, 1966, in Salem. She graduated from St. Paul
High School and Oregon State University. She lived in Seattle for
several years, and returned to Portland in 1991. She worked in
marketing research for Nike.
She was a past president of Chi Omega at OSU and a member of
Multnomah Athletic Club. She was a practicing Catholic.
Survivors include: father Sherling and stepmother Roberta Eide of
Kenai, Alaska; brother Matt Eide of Newberg; stepbrothers, Tom
Booher of Anchorage and Lee Booher of Inverss, Fla.; and stepsister
Dana Craig of Forest Grove.
A funeral mass was held Tuesday in the St. Paul Catholic Church.
Donald F. Burnham
Donald Francis Burnham of Newberg died Nov. 22, 2006. He was 80.
He was born May 20, 1926, in Wood, S.D., to Ivy and Maysie
(Dickerson) Burnham. He graduated from high school in 1944 and
enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force the following year. He retired
from the Air Force in 1965 with the rank of master sergeant. His
military service included World War II and the Korean War. He was
awarded the Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal.
In 1947, he married Fredie Cooper in Houston. She accompanied him
to postings in Alaska, Montana and South Dakota before they settled
in Newberg in 1966. He held several jobs in Newberg and did not
fully retire until 1992.
He enjoyed woodworking and building birdhouses, fishing, and served
for five years as Post Commander of Newberg’s VFW post.
Survivors include: sons John of Newberg and Thomas; brothers, Buck
of Bismarck, N.D., and Jim of Wood; and sister Esther Draine of
Winter, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Fredie, sons Donald and David
Burnham, two brothers and three sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Attrell’s
Newberg Funeral Chapel. Committal will be at 1 p.m. Dec. 4 in
Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
Ruthanna Hampton
Ruthanna Hampton died Nov. 23, 2006, at Friendsview Retirement
Community from complications of Parkinson’s disease. She was 91.
She was born March 1, 1915, in Holguin, Cuba, to Joseph and Bertha
(Lawrence) McCracken and attended Pacific College (now George Fox
University). She earned a master’s degree in education from Western
Oregon University and worked for 20 years as a teacher in the
Newberg School District. In 1937 she marred Rex Hampton. He preceded
her in death in 1984.
She was a member of Newberg Friends Church.
Survivors include: son David Hampton of Newberg; daughters, Alice
Maurer and Carolyn Stansell of Newberg; brother Lawrence McCracken
of Caldwell, Idaho; sister Maribeth Hampton of Newberg; 16
grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son Joseph in 1998.
A memorial service was held Tuesday at the Newberg Friends
Church.

Elaine J. Maltby
Elaine Joyce Maltby died Nov. 18, 2006. She was 74.
She was born Dec. 12, 1931, in St. James, Minn., to Herbert and
Gladys Marks and grew up on her family’s dairy farm.
She graduated from Randolph High School and attended nursing
school, becoming a licensed practical nurse for the state hospital
in Hastings, Minn. On Nov. 18, 1973, she married Willis Maltby. She
was previously married to Paul Guildner, with whom she had four
children prior to their divorce.
The couple lived in Arizona before moving to Oregon. She continued
to work as a nurse, later joining her daughter Ardis in a
photography business.
She enjoyed arts and crafts, canning, gardening and fishing.
Survivors include: husband Willis; daughters, Norma Martinek of
Colville, Wash., Violet Dauk of New London, Minn., and Ardis
Guildner of Newberg; brothers Glenn and Lester Marks; sister Esther
Haggstrom; four stepchildren and 17 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother Ruth, twin
brothers Joseph and Wayne Marks, sisters Josephine Morgan and
LaVonne Walter, and son Walter Guildner.
A memorial service was held Nov. 24 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral
Chapel. Committal was at Valley View Memorial Park.
Nina J. Rifenbery
Nina J. (Newman) Rifenbery died from cancer Nov. 18, 2006, at her
Newberg home. She was 69.
She was born Dec. 22, 1936, in Potlatch, Idaho. Her family moved to
Oregon in 1948, settling in Dundee in 1951. She graduated from
Newberg High School in 1955 and married Robert Rifenbery in 1965.
She worked as a bookkeeper for Allied Air Products and the Madsen
Grain Company in Carlton. Newberg residents since 1972, she and her
husband vacationed in Yuma, Ariz., each winter since retiring in
2003.
Survivors include: husband Robert of Newberg; son Dean of
Portland; daughters, Jacquie Steagall of Lagonville, Wisc., Brinn
Stuart of Olympia and Traci Petry of Lafayette; brother Lance Newman
of Nyssa.; sisters, Lila Mahaffy of Missouri and Bonnie Weddle of
Welton, Ariz.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Lowell Newman.

Pearl L. Weed
Pearl Lavina Weed died Nov. 18, 2006, at a Salem care facility. She
was 92.
She was born Oct. 18, 1914, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, to Daniel
and Malinda (Canada) Forrester and moved to Oregon at a young age.
She attended school in Woodburn and Cottage Grove. The family
briefly lived in Scottsville, Ky., and Gallatin, Tenn., where she
attended high school.
In 1945, she returned to Oregon, where she worked for Lipman’s
Department Store in Portland. She married William Weed in Portland
in December 1952.
She enjoyed golfing, bowling, cooking and entertaining family and
friends.
Survivors include: brother Lloyd Forrester of Salem; four nieces;
three nephews and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in July 1993, stepson
William in 1999, twin brother Lloyd and sisters Geraldine Snow,
Myrle Arnett and Naomi McMurtry.

James Petrie
James Petrie died Nov. 22, 2006, at his Newberg home. He was 55.
He was born Oct. 3, 1951, in Dundee, Scotland, to David and Mary
(Walker) Petrie. He attended Castro Valley High School and graduated
from Chemeketa Community College in 1984. In August 1986 he
married Robin Mingay of Newberg. For more than 20 years he worked
for the city of Newberg in the water operations department and also
for the city of St. Paul in its water department.
He was involved with the Boy Scouts and coached youth sports
through the Chehalem Park and Recreation District. He enjoyed
fishing, camping and spending time with his family.
Survivors include: wife Robin of Newberg; sons, Andrew, Christopher
and Jacob of Newberg; daughter Heather of Newberg,; brothers, Norman
of Waynesville, Mo., and Stuart of Vancouver, Wash.; and sister
Carol Brier of Tracy, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Northside
Community Church in Newberg. Interment will follow at Valley View
Cemetery.
Raymond W. Nelson
Raymond W. Nelson Jr. of Dayton died Nov. 20, 2006. He was 72.
He was born Dec. 19, 1933, in Chattanooga, Tenn., to Raymond and
Olivia (Hamrick) Nelson. He moved to Oregon with his family as a
young boy. He grew up in Portland, Dayton, Prineville and Priest
River, Idaho. He married Nadene Holley in June 1955 in Priest River.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following
his discharge, he returned to Oregon and settled in Dayton in 1968.
He worked as an electrician at Smurfit (now SP Newsprint) until
1998.
He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, golf and other sports. He was a
member of the Dayton Christian Church and the Dayton Boosters.
Survivors include: sons, Steven of Salem and Tony of Nampa, Idaho;
daughter Paula Galinat of Dayton; brothers, Clifford of Tennessee
and Kenneth of Sparks, Nev., sister Elizabeth Briley of Greenacres,
Wash.; stepbrothers James VanZant of Phoenix, Ariz., and Randy
Tuttle of Montana; stepmother Sarah Nelson of Sawanee, Ga.; and
eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2004 and an infant son,
Raymond.

Delfina C. Fernandez
Delfina C. Fernandez of Newberg died Nov. 18, 2006, at a local
hospital. She was 83.
She was born Feb. 25, 1923, in the city of Encantada in Coahuila,
Mexico, to Pedro and Maria de la Luz Castaneda de Diaz. She married
Antonio Fernandez in Mexico in February 1948. In 1955, they migrated
to San Jose, Calif. She and her husband moved to Newberg in 1983,
living with their son and his family.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking for her extended family,
spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and
growing roses.
Survivors include: husband Antonio of Newberg; son Antonio
Fernandez II of Newberg; brothers Raul and Enrique Castaneda;
sisters, Celia de Moralez, Consuelo Castaneda de Paniagua, Graziela
Castaneda, Carmen Juarez and Lucita Lozano; six grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren.

Wilma G. Magee
Wilma G. (Harris) Magee, formerly of Newberg, died Oct. 29, 2006,
in Waxhaw, N.C. She was 79.
She was born April 18, 1927, in Carthage, Mo., to William and Flora
(Harned) Harris. She attended George Fox College (now George Fox
University). In September 1956 she married Harold Magee of Newberg.
She worked as a teacher and dental hygienist.
Survivors include: husband Harold of North Carolina; son Malcolm of
Lansing, Mich.; daughters, Pam of Vancouver, B.C., Canada, Jody
Ormsby of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Patricia Satter of Portland;
sister Mildred Bolin of Las Vegas; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Nov. 24 at the Spaulding Oaks Community
Center in Newberg. Internment was private.

Donald R. Potts
Donald Richard Potts died Nov. 13, 2006, at his Dundee home. He was
65.
He was born Feb. 20, 1941, in Fort Smith, Ark., to Richard and
Floyce (Garrett) Potts and grew up in Southern California. He
graduated from high school in Long Beach, Calif., and worked as a
commercial fisherman for several years before joining the U.S.
Merchant Marine.
In April 1976, he married Adelina Montoya in Las Vegas. He spent 30
years as a sailor and traveled to many ports of call around the
world. The couple purchased a home on Chehalem Mountain when he
retired in 2001.
His wife preceded him in death inn 2004, at which point he moved to
Dundee to make his home with Chuck and Judy Freeman.
Survivors include: son John of Weldon, Calif.; and numerous
step-nieces and step-nephews.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Charles L. Healey
Charles L. “Mickey” Healey, who has family in the area, died
Nov. 8, 2006, at a Newberg nursing home. He was 88.
He was born April 8, 1918, in Seattle. He attended Grant High
School. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corp’s 17th
Photo Reconnaissance Squadron, stationed in the Philippines. He
graduated from Lewis & Clark College in 1952 with a degree in
sociology. He worked for the Social Security Administration, and
pursued an interest in printing and lithography.
Survivors include: daughters, Janice Van Domelin of Newberg, Judy
Harris of Washougal, Wash., and Joan Le Brun of Phoenix, Ariz.;
sons, Mike of Portland and Casey of Newberg; brother John of Maui,
Hawaii; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother Jerry on Nov. 2.
A memorial service is planned for April on the Oregon coast.

Robert Lafollett
Robert Lafollett, who has family in the area, died Nov. 11, 2006,
in Hillsboro. He was 68.
He was born Feb. 16, 1938, in Hillsboro, graduated from Hillsboro
High School in 1955, and served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1965.
He worked as a deputy for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office
until 1989, earning the rank of detective. He married Lucille
Thompson in 1991, and worked for Baker Rock Resources until retiring
in 2000.
Survivors include: wife Lucille of Hillsboro; son Douglas of St.
Paul; daughter Kristin Klein of North Plains; stepson Jason Thompson
of Hillsboro; brothers William of California and Thomas of Idaho;
and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Nov. 17 at Fir Lawn Mortuary in
Hillsboro.

Phil D. Onsgaard
Former Dundee resident Phil Drew Onsgaard died Nov. 1, 2006, in
Vancouver, Wash. He was 85.
He was born Oct. 4, 1921 in DeSart, N.D., to Phil and Jennie (Drew)
Onsgaard and attended school in Wisconsin. He married Hazel Noreen
on July 17, 1943. She preceded him in death in March 2000. The
couple moved to Oregon from Wisconsin in 1978 and settled in Dundee
in 1990. A carpenter, he also was a part-time bus driver in Newberg.
The couple attended the Methodist Church in Dundee, where he placed
a memorial plaque and rose garden after his wife’s death. In 2002,
he returned to Wisconsin to live with his granddaughter and family,
but returned to the Northwest in July 2006.
Survivors include: sister Delone Christensen of New Berlin, Wisc.;
brother Duane of Watertown, Wisc.; sons Jeff of Fall River, Wisc.,
and Gary of Portland; daughter Holly Minnich of Vancouver, Wash.;
six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Diane M. Powers
Diane Marie Powers died Nov. 7, 2006. She was 48.
She was born Jan. 20, 1958, in Portland to Thomas and Charlotte
Graham and attended St. John Fisher Catholic School. Her parents
divorced and her mother remarried Floyd Lissy, a naval officer, and
settled in Tigard in 1969. She attended Tigard High School and
Portland Community College before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in
1976.
She served in Texas and North Dakota as a dental assistant while on
active duty, and in 1987 returned to Portland with the rank of
senior airman. She worked for the Oregon Air National Guard as a
recruiter. In 1982 she married fellow recruiter, Sgt. Keith Powers.
Honorably discharged as a staff sergeant, she and her family moved
to Coos Bay in 1994.
She enjoyed the arts and was an amateur painter, also trying her
hand at songwriting, poetry, photography and modeling.
Survivors include: husband Keith of North Bend; twin sons Kenneth
and Keith of North Bend; mother Charlotte of Tualatin; stepfather
Floyd Lissy of Tualatin; brothers, Michael and Steven Graham of
Beaverton, and Jeff and Joe Graham of Portland; sisters, Theresa

Larry K. Olson
Larry Kent Olson, formerly of Newberg, died Nov. 2, 2006, in a plane
crash in Arizona. He was 48.
He was born July 8, 1958, in McMinnville to Miles and Peggy (Bramlet)
Olson, and graduated from Newberg High School in 1976. He married
Sue Bachmeier in July 1977, and moved to Arizona in the 1980s.
He worked as a lumber broker and a senior construction specialist
with DuPont, providing sales and service for their Tyvek brand of
waterproof plastics. Shortly before his death, he was recognized as
2006 specialist of the year by his employers.
He was a pilot for more than a decade, and was flying his kit plane
at the time of his death. His passenger, Mark Wild of Mesa, Ariz.,
was also killed in the crash. Its cause is under investigation by
the FAA.
Survivors include: wife Sue of Cave Creek, Ariz.; son Jason of
Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughter Jennifer Colburn of Scottsdale; brother
Lynn of Newberg; sisters, Karen Lite of Newberg and Diane Storey of

Larry Damon
Larry Damon died Nov. 6, 2006, at Good Samaritan Hospital in
Portland. He was 69.
He was born Sept. 17, 1937 in Inglewood, Calif., where he graduated
from Morningside High School.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for eight years and resided in New
Mexico and Texas before settling in Oregon.
He married Karen Wood of Portland in 1983, and they moved to Newberg
in 1996. He worked as a sharpener, serving businesses around the
town.
He was a supporter of Newberg High athletics, and enjoyed fishing,
western novels and Oregon State University football.
Survivors include: wife Karen; son Jim of El Paso, Texas; and
daughter Shawna of Portland.
A private memorial service will be held Nov. 18.

Lori Anne Darling-Thompson of Sherwood died Nov. 5, 2006, in a Portland
hospital. She was 43.
She was born July 17, 1963, in Newberg to Charles and Grace (Cutright)
Conrad and attended school in Sherwood. She was married twice, to
Steve Darling and Gregory Thompson, both of Sherwood. She worked as
a cook at the Sherwood Peddler Restaurant and at the King City
Rehabilitation Living Center.
She enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing and entertaining guests
in her home.
Survivors include: husband Gregory of Sherwood; son Evan Darling;
daughter Jennifer Darling; stepdaughter Tiffany Thompson; foster
daughter Misti Blount; brothers Ralph Conrad of Dundee and Charles

Jonathan Alexander Bell of McMinnville died Nov. 1, 2006, of
undetermined natural causes. He was 25.
He was born Aug. 20, 1981, in San Dimas, Calif. He was raised in
California and Oregon. He graduated from Yamhill-Carlton High School
in 2000 and moved to McMinnville, where he worked as a crane
operator for Wilsonville Concrete Co.

Martha H. L. Stine
Martha Helen Louise Stine of Newberg died Nov. 3, 2006. She was 69.
She was born Jan. 10, 1937, in Leachville, Ark., to Roy and Edith
(Stevens) Tinsley. She and her siblings attended school in Arkansas,
and moved to California as teenagers. In 1957 she married
Sheldon Stine in California. They family moved to Newberg in 1968.
She enjoyed traveling and trips to the beach, as well as spending
time with family and her grandchildren.
Survivors include: husband Sheldon of Newberg; daughters, Carolyn
of Newberg and Helena Gross of Wilder, Idaho; brother Bobby Tinsley
of Bakersfield, Calif.; sisters, Glenda Clark of Alpaugh, Calif.,

Chadwick Clay Hendrix of Newberg died Oct. 29, 2006, of sleep
apnea. He was 28.
He was born Jan. 8, 1978, in Ely, Nev., to Jim and Marlene
(Hendrix) Stanley. He moved to the Newberg area in 2005 and worked
as a chef at Timberline Lodge, the Yamhill Grill, and local senior
care homes.
He enjoyed skateboarding and spending time with his friends.
Survivors include: parents Jim and Marlene Stanley of Richland,
Wash.; brothers, Jack Hendrix and Craig Stanley of Richland; sister
Jamie Stanley of Richland; and two nephews.

Jerry Talbott
Jerome A. Talbott, who has family in Newberg, died Oct. 28, 2006.
He was 70.
He was born Jan. 8, 1936, in San Francisco to Robert and Jeanette
Talbot. He graduated from Sequoia High School and San Mateo
Community College and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Mahopac
in Alaska. He was married in 1961. He worked as an electronics
technician in Redwood City, Calif., before moving to Beaverton in
1968 to work for Tektronix.
He enjoyed collecting antique radios, televisions and microphones,
as well as classic cars and scooters.

Gertrude E. Pairan
Gertrude E. Pairan of Newberg died Oct. 23, 2006. She was 92.
She was born May 5, 1914, in Scio to Charles and Gertrude (Parsons)
Sandoz. Her family moved to Newberg in 1919. She graduated from
Newberg High School in 1932 and attended Pacific College (now George
Fox University).
She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for various local
businesses, including the Dundee Nut Company, Portland General
Electric, the Newberg Pulp Mill and Newberg Realty.
She married Clifford Pairan in 1951. The couple lived for a time in
San Mateo, Calif. He preceded her in death in 1962. After his death
she returned to Newberg, where she helped run the Sandoz family
orchards.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed
baking, gardening, traveling and hosting family get-togethers.
She sold the Sandoz farm in 1997 and moved into the Friendsview
Retirement Center.
Survivors include: 11 nieces and nephews; 11 great-nieces and
nephews; and nine great-great-nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 11 at the
Newberg Friends Cemetery.
Alice M. Brittell
Alice May (Fowler) Brittell died Oct. 27, 2006, at her Dayton home.
She was 87.
She was born Sept. 4, 1919, in Portland. She grew up in Turner and
graduated from Turner High School. A Salem resident most of her
life, she was a homemaker and part-time tax preparer. In 1949, she
married Virgil Max Brittell. He preceded her in death in 1997.
Following her husband’s death, she lived with the family of her son,
Dwayne Brittell of Dayton.
Survivors include: sons, Dwayne of Dayton and Gerald of Lancaster,
Va.; daughter Joann McIntosh of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; sister Eleanor
Smith of Dallas; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Northside Community Church
at 3 p.m. today (Saturday).

Emmett G. DeHart
Emmett George DeHart, who has family in Newberg, died Oct. 28,
2006. He was 48.
He was born March 31, 1958, in Hood River to Cass and Aretha
(Johnson) DeHart. The family moved to Portland in 1964, and he
graduated from David Douglas High School in 1976. He attended
Chemeketa Community College and worked as a truck driver and lived
in Clackamas and Eagle Creek before settling in Estacada. On June
17, 1998 he married Barbara Johnson.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
in Estacada. He enjoyed flyfishing, dogs, motorcyclists, gardening,
camping, spending time with his family and was an amateur mechanic.
Survivors include: wife Barbara of Estacada; sons Cassidy, Andrew
and Eric of Portland, and Kevin DeHart and Robert Mininger of
Washington state; daughters, Chelsea of Salem, Debbie Shope and
Shirley Bigsbee; sisters, Julia Wilson of Crestwell, Nancy Harkness
of Portland, Catherine Chausse, Theresa Leard and Emily McIntosh of
Newberg; and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation hours are today (Saturday) from 8 a.m. until the
memorial service at 1 p.m. in Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel.
Committal will follow at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.
Joseph J. Janac
Joseph John Janac of Newberg died Oct. 31, 2006, at a West Linn
care center. He was 80.
He was born March 6, 1926, in Ord, Neb., to John and Kathrin (Slangal)
Janac. His family moved to Oregon when he was 7-years-old, and he
attended school in Corbett and Scappoose, graduating from Scappoose
High School. During World War II, he worked in the Portland
shipyards and served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
In 1949, he married Catherine Bruckner. The couple settled in
Dundee in 1961, where they farmed 60 acres of filberts, prunes and
walnuts. In 1990, they moved to Newberg.
He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and the Czech Club in
Portland, and was a volunteer at the F.I.S.H. (Friends In Service to
Humanity) food bank in Newberg. He was a woodworker and handyman,
and enjoyed polka dancing and vacationing in his RV.
Survivors include: wife Catherine of Newberg; sons, Joe Jr. and
Stephen of Newberg, and Mike of Salem; daughters, Terri Riley and
Diana Pike of Newberg, and Patty Gaskins of Roseburg; brothers,
Chuck of Milwaukie and Wes of Scappoose; sister Mary Cantrell of
Milwaukie; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and numerous
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers John and Al.
A funeral Mass was Nov. 3 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg
with Father Jim Nibler officiating. Committal followed at Valley
View Memorial Park.

JoJean Burkett
JoJean Burkett of Dundee died Oct 26, 2006, at Providence Newberg
Medical Center. She was 65.
She was born Dec. 7, 1940, in Waco, Mo., to Chester and Mary (McMichael)
Holman. She moved to Oregon with her family as a young child. She
attended school in Newberg, graduating from Newberg High in 1960.
She became a beautician and opened a shop in town.
She enjoyed crafts, gardening, quilting and collected Betty Boop and
Kewpie dolls. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, a senior
social group. She and her husband also did missionary work in the
Dominican Republic.
Survivors include: husband Ralph of Dundee; daughters, Angie Janson
of Portland, Yvette Burkett of Tigard and Renae Leslie of Newberg;
and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister Sylvia Barrera.
A memorial service was held Oct. 30, 2006, at Newberg Christian

Bernice H. Moreira
Bernice H. Moreira died Oct. 6, 2006, at Marian Estates in
Sublimity. She was 84.
She was born April 30, 1922, in Lompoc, Calif., to Sebastian and
Margaret (Grassel) Plo. She graduated high school in 1939 while
living with her sister in Poteet, Texas, and returned to Lompoc
where she worked as a cook and nanny.
On May 14, 1945, she married Tony Moreira in Carson City, Nev. They
went into business, first owning and operating a trailer park in
Lompoc, then a grocery store, gas station and U.S. Post office in
Umapine.
The couple moved to Sherwood in 1952, buying a farm on Rex Hill
where they raised walnuts, prunes and strawberries. She also worked
for Piggly Wiggly (now Nap’s Thriftway) and for Herring’s Fruit and
Nut Processing until retiring in 1986.
She was a member of the Newberg Assembly of God Church, and
volunteered as a Sunday school teacher and church treasurer. She
enjoyed gardening, gourmet cooking and baking and camping with her
husband during hunting season, or on the Siletz River while salmon
fishing.
Survivors include: daughters, Margaret Moffitt of Jefferson;
Kathleen Sellard of California City, Calif.; Jeri Moreira of Aloha;
sister Lillian Clemens of Ely, Nevada; 11 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Tony, her parents and
seven siblings.

Ina L. Neidigh
Former Newberg resident Ina L. Neidigh died Oct. 19, 2006, at a
Portland care center. She was 91.
She was born Oct. 28, 1914, in River Falls, Wisc., to August and
Linnet (Bunce) Haberstich. She grew up in Ellsworth, Wisc., and
worked as a waitress in Minneapolis.
On March 18, 1938, she married Earl Neidigh in Bremer County, Iowa.
The couple lived a short time in Waterloo, Iowa, and came to Oregon
in the early 1940s. While her husband served in the U.S. Army, she
worked in the Portland shipyards and was a member of Central Free
Methodist Church, serving as their Sunday school superintendent.
She and her husband later moved to Newberg. She worked at the
Tektronix plant in Tigard for several years. They took several
foster children into their home, and adopted two; Larry and Lori. He
preceded her in death in April 2004. After her husband’s death, she
moved to Gresham to be with family.
She was a member of the Newberg Free Methodist Church, and a
founding member of the Meals on Wheels program in Newberg. She also
started the “Scissor Sisters,” a Portland sewing club which donated
clothing to the needy.
Survivors include: foster daughters, Lori Oppelt of Gresham and
Linda Bunnell of Milwaukie; foster son Larry of Florida; brothers,
Daniel, William and Glenn Haberstich of Iowa, and Edwin Haberstich
of Arizona; sisters, Mary Kelty of Michigan and Phyllis Watters of
Iowa; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers John, Robert, Raymond and
James Haberstich; and sister Elma Leeper.

Marian I. Nelson
Marian I. Nelson died Oct. 23, 2006, in Newberg. She was 88.
She was born May 28, 1918, in Flint, Mich., to Frederick and Louise
(Martin) Huskins. She graduated from Fergus Falls High School in
Minnesota. She married Clarence Nelson on May 14, 1940. The couple
moved to Oregon in 1942, and lived in Beaverton, Hillsboro, Aloha
and Bend before retiring to Newberg in 1989.
She worked at JC Penney, Montgomery Ward and Reser’s and was a
member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of
America.
Survivors include: sons, Theodore of Aloha, Thomas of Beaverton,
Daniel of Newberg and Terence of Newberg; daughter Marianne Norman
of Newberg; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Judith Lapman in 1982 and
her husband in 1990.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter Catholic
Church. Interment will be at 2 p.m. at Valley Memorial Park in

Ivan Smith
Ivan Smith died Oct. 21, 2006, in Nehalem. He was 74.
He was born Nov. 24, 1931, in Carlton to Lorna and Elsie Smith. He
attended schools in McMinnville, where he played basketball and
football. He attended Linfield College and was a fullback for the
Wildcats football team. He was signed to the Los Angeles Rams and
played professionally for a short time. In 1952, he enlisted in the
Marine Corps and served in the Korean War.
He married Neva “Georgie” Oberg in 1963 in Seattle; the couple
settled in Lafayette. He worked for Caffall Brothers Logging before
setting out as an entrepreneur.
He owned and operated several businesses in his career, including
The Silver Dollar, Ivan’s Inn of Newberg (formerly Dave’s Pizza),
Ivan’s Inn of Hammond, The Opera House and the Sportsman in Dayton,
the Trails Inn in Amity, and the Fort in Vancouver, Wash.
Survivors include: daughters, Roberta Hamel of Nehalem and Chris
Davis of Newberg; brothers, Paul of La Pine and Bob of Tillamook;
sisters, May Rowland of Newberg and Wilma Reece of California; five
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by wife Georgie and by son Bill Oberg, who
was killed in Vietnam in 1965.
He was cremated and his ashes spread over the family homestead in
Carlton. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m Sunday at his
Nehalem home, located at 12865 Hayes Drive.
Angela B. Ulrich
Angela B. Ulrich died of undetermined causes on Oct. 13, 2006, in
Portland. She was 33.
She was born Feb. 27, 1973, in Eugene to Fred and Meladie Kallien.
She and graduated from Linfield College in 2003. She married Ted
Ulrich in 2004. A Portland resident since 1994, she worked as a
human resources specialist for Pacificorp.
Survivors include: husband Ted; parents Fred and Meladie Kallien;
brothers, Kurt, David and Brian; and nephew Andy Kallien.
A memorial service was held Oct. 21, 2006, at the Newberg Christian
Church. Contributions may be made to the Eugene Christian School in

Judith Hoy Wolfe
Former Newberg resident Judith Hoy Wolfe died Oct. 16, 2006, of
respiratory illness. She was 77.
She was born April 22, 1929 in Pierre, S.D., to Solomon and Roberta
(Smith) Hoy. The family moved to Oregon in 1942 and she graduated
from Newberg High School in 1947.
She married Willis Wolfe on April 11, 1948, and started a career in
banking. In 1951, her husband was recalled to active duty in the
U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and they traveled to several
postings before settling in Oxnard, Calif. in 1967.
From 1987 to 1997 she worked in the accounting department of the
Buenaventura Medical Clinic in Oxnard. She was also active in the
Girl Scouts, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Ventura
County Genealogical Society, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet
Reserve Association.
She organized the Oxnard Activity Club in 1971, and maintained a
membership in the Newberg chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star
for almost 60 years.
Survivors include: husband Willis of Oxnard; daughters, Janet Wolfe
of Oxnard and Nancy Munoz of Ventura, Calif.; son Jeffrey of
Ventura; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers John Hoy in 2004 and Robert
Hoy in 2006.

Harold T. Gonce
Harold Truman Gonce died Oct. 15, 2006, at a Washington hospital.
He was 85.
He was born June 25, 1921, in Hockerville, Okla., to Fred and Rosa
(Sanders) Gonce. He attended school in Oklahoma before moving to
Ottawa, Kan. He joined the U.S. Army in September 1942 and served
with the 14th Armored Division, earning the rank of staff sergeant.
He was discharged in January 1946.
He returned to Kansas, and later traveled to Oregon, where he met
and married Arlene Burr. They made their home in Newberg in 1946.
She preceded him in death in January 1 1994.
He worked at the Spaulding Paper Mill (now SP Newsprint) for 32
years before retiring.
He enjoyed fishing, golfing and photography. He played guitar in
several music groups and was a member of Joyful Servant Lutheran
Church.
Survivors include: daughters, Jannell Kelley of Tacoma, Wash.,
Roshelle Sweat of White City and Ardelle Churchill of Baker City;
four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by five siblings.

K.C. Mann
Kay Claudia Mann of Lehman Hot Springs died Sept. 29, 2006, in
Ukiah, Ore. She was 64.
She was born Feb. 13, 1942, in Palo Alto, Calif., to Thomas and
Ruby (Williams) Watson. She married Desmond Mann on Feb. 16, 1980,
and the couple settled in Newberg.
She worked for Newberg Realty and for Prudential Real Estate in
Sherwood. At the time of her death, she was managing the Lehman Hot
Springs resort in Oregon’s Blue Mountains.
Survivors include: husband Desmond of Lehman Hot Springs; son Tom
Beall of Ukiah; and daughter Stacey Veenendall of Jefferson.

Lorraine Belle McBride died Oct. 13, 2006. She was 80.
She was born Sept. 14, 1926, in Duluth, Minn., to Gustav and Helen
(Carnahan) Guston. She moved to Newberg with her family as a
teenager. She married Donald McBride on Sept. 14, 1980, in Newberg.
He preceded her in death in November 1991.
She worked for Sartron in Newberg and Coiltron in Tigard until her
retirement at age 75. She enjoyed embroidering, doll crafting and
spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Newberg, Debbie Roby of South Beach, Sharon Garland of Skagway,

Lisa Marie Cooksey died Oct. 9, 2006, in Newberg. She was 42.
She was born Feb. 19, 1964, in Newberg to Sheldon and Lillian
Louthan. She moved to Kansas as a young adult. She married in 1985
Greg Cooksey from Wichita, where she worked in the restaurant
industry. She returned to Newberg in 1994 to care for her mother,
and they moved to Wenatchee, Wash., together in 2001.

Stephen A. Shinn
Newberg resident Stephen Arthur Shinn died Oct. 1, 2006, in
Portland. He was 47.
He was born Oct. 19, 1958, in Tillamook to Raymond and Jean
(Miller) Shinn, and graduated from Tillamook High School in 1976. He
worked for McCrae & Sons in Bay City as a millworker, and was a
member of the Bay City volunteer fire department. He moved to
Newberg in 1994.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a member of the First
Baptist Church in Newberg.

She was born Oct. 26, 1930, in Holdenville, Okla., to Guy and Ima
(Jackson) Gentry and attended school in Glendale, Ariz. She married
Cecil Thornton on Oct. 30, 1950. He preceded her in death in 1981.
She worked in the injection molding industry and at the Excalibur
Casino in Las Vegas. She enjoyed Western novels, NASCAR and
football.

Birdie Cross
Birdie “Lee” Cross died Oct. 6, 2006, in McMinnville. She was 80.
She was born April 14, 1926, in Alton, Ill., to S. Ray and Ruth
(Baldwin) Crane. She met her future husband, Robert Cross, on a
riverboat on the Mississippi River. They were married in November
1944.
Her husband was a member of the United States Air Corps and the
couple lived in many places across the nation during his service.
They settled in Oregon in 1970, and moved to McMinnville in 1971.
She enjoyed singing and spending time with her grandchildren.

Inez O. Shrock
Inez O. Shrock of McMinnville died Oct. 1, 2006. She was 90.
She was born Sept. 26, 1916, in Hinkley, Minn., to Otis and Ethel
(Anderson) Hankins, and graduated from Northwest Nazarene College in
Nampa, Idaho, with a degree in education. She worked as a teacher
for several years in Emmett, Idaho, before marrying Earl Shrock on
May 23, 1937.
The couple moved to McMinnville in 1938 and to Newberg in 1953,
where they were business partners in the Shrock Appliance store.
They returned to McMinnville in 1973. Her husband preceded her in
death in 1995.
She was a member of the Soroptimists and the First Presbyterian
Church, where she was involved with the Laubach Library Program. She
enjoyed golf, choral singing, sewing and travel.
Survivors include: sons, Keith of Beaverton and Loren of
Wilsonville; daughters, Marita Noyes of Boise and Nadine Lynch of
Seattle; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Leonard Dressel
Newberg resident Leonard Henry Dressel died Oct. 2, 2006, in
McMinnville. He was 89.
He was born April 12, 1917, in Burdette, Colo., to Jacob and
Katherine (Gamaehlich) Dressel. He attended school in Newberg and
served on Works Progress Administration (WPA) and Civilian
Conservation Corps (CCC) projects before entering the U.S. Army in
1941. He married Ethel Hayes in 1937 in Vancouver, Wash. She
preceded him in death in 2005.
After the war, he worked for the Murphy Lumber Company in Yamhill
County for many years, until an injury ended his forestry career. He
later worked for, and retired from, the Newberg School District as a
custodian at Renne Middle School.
Survivors include: sons, Bill of Tigard, Jerry of Milwaukie and
Mike of McMinnville; sisters, Emma Kondraski and Florence Corder of
Newberg and Irene McFall of Sherwood; seven grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.

Robert M. Brown
Robert M. Brown died Sept 27, 2006 in Olympia, Wash. He was 65.
He was born January 30th, 1941 in Eugene to Dan M. and Joy (Mealey)
Brown. He graduated Newberg High School in 1959.
He received his B.A. degree from Linfield College and his M.A. and
MBA from University of Indiana. He also earned his pilot’s license
at the age of 16 and spent many years as a pilot.
His final flight will be in the classic Comanche airplane he helped
restore where his business partner and friend Richard Engstrom will
scatter his ashes.

Deborah Murray of Beaverton, Haidee Copeland of Eugene, Tanya Brown

Diane Lust
died Sept. 24, 2006, in McMinnville. She was 68.
She was born Jan. 9, 1938, in McMinnville to Andrew and Irene (Cauffman)
Petersen. She graduated from McMinnville High School in 1956. At the
age of 12, she was ranked as the No. 2 tennis player on the West
Coast in her age bracket, and as a high school student she won the
state championship in tennis three years in a row. She was also a
member of the rally squad and an honor student.
She attended Oregon State University and earned a degree in
education, returning to Yamhill County to teach junior high school
in Newberg until her retirement in 1994.
Besides tennis, she enjoyed playing golf and gardening. She
was a charter member of Michelbook Country Club, where she was
women’s club champion from 1964 to 1978. She was also a fan of OSU
baseball and Linfield football, and a supporter of high school
athletics.
Survivors include: son Mark Fisler of McMinnville and brother Larry
Petersen of Lafayette, Calif.

Sprague
Howard W.
Sprague died Aug. 27, 2006, at his Newberg home. He was 79.
He was born Oct. 31, 1926, in Lee, Mont., to Ernest and Clara (Parkins)
Sprague. In 1952 he married Bernice Howell in Yuma, Ariz. After
living in California and Montana, the couple moved to Oregon in
1964. They then moved to the Dalles, where Sprague worked on the
John Day Dam, and later settled in Newberg.
He was a member of the Gold Prospectors of America and enjoyed
panning for gold. He also enjoyed fishing, camping and working with
horses.
Survivors include: sons, Howard Jr. of Las Vegas and E. Wade of
Newberg; daughters Denise Labb-Brown of Grand Ronde and Alice
Sprague of Rickreall; sister Martha Terrano of Durham, Calif.; eight
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice in January 2002, his
granddaughter, Abby, one brother and one sister.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. today (Saturday)
at the Oak Grove Grange, 2670 Oak Grove Road in Rickreall.

Benson Clark
Mitchell, Jr.
Benson Clark Mitchell, Jr. died
on Wednesday, September 20, 2006, in Newberg, Oregon. Ben was born
on July 20, 1921, in Medford, Oregon. He was the second of four
children born to Benson and Susan Mitchell. As a boy, Ben grew up in
the small town of Chiloquin, Oregon. During the Second World War,
Ben served in the Army Air Corps. He flew C-47’s in North Africa and
Europe, dropping paratroopers during the invasions of Sicily, Italy
and Normandy on D-Day.
After his discharge from the Army, Ben enrolled at Oregon State College
where he graduated with a degree in agriculture. In 1947, Ben
married Grace Hanigan. Ben and Grace began their career in farming
in St. Paul Oregon, then expanded the operation by moving to
Beaverton, Oregon. They had five children: Susan, Ben, Mary,
Margaret and Will. In 1960, Ben and Grace moved their family and
poultry business to Newberg. Today, Flying Feather Orchards is one
of the largest privately owned hazelnut operations in Oregon. After
Grace died of cancer, Ben married Jean Kane McDonnell in 1988.
Ben was an influential figure in the community. Some of the offices he

in retirement, Ben and Jean continued to volunteer for charitable
organizations and assisted their community.
Most importantly, Ben loved his family and they loved him in return. He
is survived by his wife, Jean Mitchell; brother and sister Byrne
Mitchell and Patricia Persons; children Benson Mitchell,
Susan Mitchell, Mary Rietze, Margaret Reed, William Mitchell; step
children Mark McDonnell, David McDonnell, Gordon McDonnell and 15
grandchildren.

Robert
V. Faber
Robert Virgil Faber died Sept. 22, 2006, in a Portland hospice. He
was 58.
He was born Oct. 30, 1947, in Woodburn to Virgil and Clara (Smith)
Faber. He graduated from St. Paul High School in 1965 and studied
drafting and computers at Chemeketa Community College and Portland
State University. In 1967 he joined the Air National Guard and
worked as a radar technician at the Portland base for the next 12
years.
In 1977, he started his own business creating wooden handrails in
his garage. After receiving a patent for his design, he incorporated
as Interloc Wood Specialties. He sold the company and retired in
2001.
He was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church. He enjoyed
carpentry and woodworking, renovating and remodeling several homes
for family and friends after his retirement. He also enjoyed
landscaping and gardening, hiking and photography.
Survivors include: wife Shirley; daughter Danielle Wood of
Portland; mother Clara of Woodburn; brothers, Joseph of Milwaukie,
Murray of Skamania, Wash., and Edward of St. Paul; sisters, Mary
Fromherz of Milwaukie and Christine Vistica of Woodburn.
A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday with a funeral
mass at 11 a.m. Saturday, both at St. Charles Catholic Church in
Portland.

M. Martel
Luella Marie (Raymond) Martel died Sept. 19, 2006 in Mt. Angel. She
was 79.
She was born May 6, 1927, in St. Paul on the family farm and
graduated from St. Paul High School. She worked as a teller at the
St. Paul branch of US Bank and was a member of the St. Paul Catholic
Church.
On Dec. 31, 1960, she married Raphael Martel in Vancouver, Wash.
The couple lived in Ballard, Kent and Olympia, Wash., before
retiring to Woodburn in 1999. She was a member of the Elkettes and
enjoyed crocheting, reading, camping, playing cards and was a
Mariners and Seahawks fan.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2002; brother A. Bobo
Raymond; and sister, D. Ducky Bustamante.
Survivors include: sister Barbara of Forest Grove; and numerous
nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the St. Paul
Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Paul Catholic
Cemetery.

Frances Helen Otero died Sept. 20, 2006, in Newberg. She was 76.
She was born Nov. 7, 1929, in Avalon, Mo., to Ernest and Esther Mae
(Smith) Carothers and grew up in Missouri. She moved to Oregon in
1969 and on Sept. 5, 1971, she married Jose Otero in Wintergreen,
Calif.
She enjoyed crochet, painting, making ceramics and reading.
Survivors include: sons, James and David of Missouri; daughters,
Mercy McKinley of Indiana and Opal Dixon of Missouri; brothers,
Roger of Klamath Falls, Jerry of Phoenix, Ariz., Frank of Glendale,

Barbara Nadine Shoenbrun died Sept. 19, 2006, at Avamere
Nursing Home in Lake Oswego. She was 84.
She was born Jan. 16, 1922, in Callaway, Neb., to Clifford and
Pearl (Marrs) Johnson and graduated from Newberg High School. She
attended Binks-Waller Business College and worked at various times
at the Portland shipyards, the Bonneville Power Administration,
Portland Veteran’s Hospital, Internal Revenue Service and the U.S.
Post Office.
She married John Shoenbrun on Oct. 17, 1951. The couple made their
home in Sherwood. He preceded her in death in 1959.
She was a member of the Sherwood United Methodist Church, where she
worked as secretary for several years. She enjoyed gardening, grew
and canned vegetables, and was also a bird watcher.
Survivors include: son Steven of Sherwood; nephew John Robertson;
and nieces Susan Blonshine and Cheryl Moralez.
She was preceded in death by her sister Rebecca in 1996.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at Pleasant View Cemetery
in Sherwood.

Miller
Friendsview Retirement Community resident Ruby Miller died Sept.
14, 2006, in Newberg. She was 97.
She was born Aug. 20, 1909, in Harper, Kan., to J.M. and Cora Brown.
She graduated from Harper High School in 1928 and was a member of
the National Honor Society.
Her interest in music led her to Friends University in Wichita,
Kan., where she was a member of the Singing Quakers. In 1930 she
received her music teacher’s certificate and was hired by the Kismit
School District in Kansas.
She married Edgar Miller in 1933. The couple settled in Wichita,
where her husband was employed by Beech Aircraft during World War
II.
In 1949, she resumed teaching and completed her bachelor of arts
degree at Friends University in 1954. She retired from the Kansas
public school system in 1971, and she and her husband moved to
Silverton to be near grandchildren.
She was a pianist who gave private lessons during the Depression.
She was also a choir director, singer and accompanist at Asbury
Methodist Church in Wichita. She continued her musical involvement
as a member of Friends Church in Silverton, and hosted weekly
singalongs as a resident of Friendsview Retirement Center.
Survivors include: son Mervin of Moorpark, Calif.; daughter Marilyn
of Corvallis; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her seven siblings and by husband
Edgar.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 30 at Newberg
Friends Church with the Rev. Don Caughey officiating.

Michelle L. Teich
Michelle Lenore Teich died Sept. 14, 2006, in her Newberg home. She
was 54.
She was born Nov. 15, 1951, in Elmhurst, Ill,. to Edward and Helen
(Travis) Teich and graduated from Western Illinois University. She
moved to Oregon in 1973, where she worked for several libraries,
most recently the Garden Home public library. A supporter of
children’s education and fine writing, colleagues and patrons
considered her an inspiration.
Survivors include: son Nathaniel; daughter Caitlin Rose; sisters
Susan, Joan and Brenda; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. today (Saturday) at St.
Peter Catholic Church in Newberg, followed by a reception for
friends and family at her home.

K. Stevens
Newberg resident Allen Keith Stevens died Sept. 15, 2006, at
Providence Newberg Medical Center. He was 67.
He was born Sept. 26, 1938, in Coos Bay to Joel and Mary (Smiley)
Stevens. He graduated from Reedsport High School.
He owned and operated a sports shop for several years in Winchester Bay
and later went to work for International Paper in Gardiner. He also
operated Coast Electronic in Reedsport.
He retired in 1996 and moved to Newberg, but continued to work as
an electrician.
Survivors include: wife Jo Anne of Newberg; sons, Brian of Newberg
and Bradley of Pleasant Hill; daughters, Heidi Speake of Scappoose,
Natalie Wittrock of Longview, Wash., Marcine Aquipel and Angela Hale
of Newberg and Kristine Trettel of New Jersey; sister Claire
Lanzaratta of Eugene; 21 grandchildren and numerous nieces and
nephews.
A memorial service was held Sept. 19 at St. Peter Catholic Church
in Newberg with Jim Nibler officiating.

Claudia Y. Fletchall
Newberg native Claudia Yvonne Fletchall died Sept. 10, 2006, at
Salem Hospital from cancer. She was 81.
She was born July 13, 1925, in Newberg to Avery and Zena (Barber)
Wood. As a young woman she delivered lunches to the Mount Chehalem
lookout tower during World War II. She was employed as a nurse’s
aide at McMinnville Hospital. She married Cleo Fletchall in 1945.
They lived briefly in Grand Ronde before settling in Salem in 1957.
She worked as a bookkeeper at the Salem Clinic for 20 years,
retiring in the early 1980s.
She enjoyed fishing, camping and gardening.
Survivors include: husband Cleo of Salem; sons, Mark, Duane and
Terry, all of Salem; daughters, Jane Kadaja of Albany and Deanna
Jackson of Salem; brothers, Zane Wood of Yamhill and Dale Wood of
Surprise; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Wood, and a sister,
Thora Wright.
A graveside service was held Thursday at Pike Cemetery.
Arllys A. Loftgren
Arllys Andresen Loftgren died Sept. 11, 2006, at Friendsview
Retirement Community. She was 82.
She was born July 7, 1924, in Bismarck, N.D., to Charles and Jennie
Hernett. She attended North Dakota State College, interning as a
dietitian in Cincinnati.
She married Osborn Andresen in 1946 in Minnesota and the couple
settled in Oregon in 1948. He preceded her in death in 1981. In
1992, she married Joseph Loftgren.
She worked at Emanuel Hospital in Portland for 11 years, and at
Dammasch State Hospital for 25 years. She was a member of 4-H clubs
and the PTA.
Survivors include: husband Joseph of Newberg; son Ronald Andresen
of Newberg, daughter Sharon Rome of Mulino; stepchildren Joseph
Loftgren Jr. and Patricia Wieczorek; seven grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Paul
Lutheran Church in Sherwood.

Helen Jeanette (Price) McQueen died Sept. 3, 2006. She was 71.
She was born Jan. 23, 1935, in Arrion, Iowa, where she married Leo
Price in 1949. He preceded her in death in 1981.
She married William McQueen in 1982. He preceded her in death in
2001.
Survivors include: son Stan Price of Dundee; daughters Sally
Christensen of Newberg and Paula Faye Price of Salem.
A memorial service will be held at noon today (Saturday) at her
daughter Sally’s home.
Jared M. Winkler
Jared Martin Winkler died Sept. 11, 2006. He was 36.
He was born Jan. 15, 1970, in Springfield, Ill., to Donald and
Patricia (Fulton) Winkler and grew up in Pittsburgh. He moved with
his family to Sherwood in 1983 and attended school there, graduating
from Sherwood High School in 1988. He attended Oregon State
University for three years before becoming a computer technician in
Beaverton.
He was an amateur screenwriter, a member of a local beach
volleyball team and a volunteer coach for Tigard High School and a
member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aloha.
He enjoyed reading, art, music, sports and movies.
In 1999, he developed a brain tumor, which led to his disability
and death.
Survivors include: mother Patricia of Beaverton; brothers, Jeff of
San Jose, Calif., Jeremy of Albany and James of Monmouth; sister
Jill of Peoria, Ill.; and grandmother Doris Fulton of Huntingdon,
Ind.
He was preceded in death by his father Donald in 2004.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethlehem
Lutheran Church in Aloha with Pastor Jonathan Dinger officiating.

Clark
June Clark died Aug. 27, 2006, at Friendsview Retirement Community.
She was 91.
She was born June 2, 1915, Carbondale, Penn., to James and Winifred
Tasker. She attended school in Carbondale and enrolled in a nursing
program at Wilson Memorial Hospital in New York, graduating in 1946.
She moved to Cleveland to work at the Florence Crittenden Home for
unwed mothers. She married James Clark on June 18, 1948.
The couple moved to Portland in 1951, and later to King City. She
worked at Newberg Community Hospital (now Providence Newberg Medical
Center), while her husband worked at the veteran’s hospital in
Portland.
She worked as a pediatric nurse for several years before becoming
the Newberg Community Hospital’s records librarian, a position she
held for 20 years, until her retirement in 1979.
She was a member of Newberg Friends Church. She enjoyed sewing,
cooking, knitting and cross-stitching.
Survivors include: husband James and several nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 21 at the Newberg
Friends Church.
MyrtleLee Baie
MyrtleLee Baie of Newberg died Aug. 31, 2006, in a McMinnville care
facility. She was 76.
She was born Oct. 29, 1929, in Broken Bow, Okla., to LeslieLee
(Moore) Perkins. She moved to Portland as a young woman. She married
Vernon Baie and settled in Newberg in 1966. He preceded her in death
in 1993.
She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking,
gardening, sewing, reading and owned Boston terriers.
Survivors include: daughter Verna of Salem; sister Deannie Green of
Mesa, Ariz.; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one
great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by son Floyd Whitewater in 1982.
No memorial services are scheduled. A private burial took place at
Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

J. Myers-Butts
Former Newberg resident Betty J. Myers-Butts died Sept. 6 in
Newton, Iowa. She was 62.
She was born Oct. 25, 1943, in Miami, Okla., to Aaron and Leona
(Maples) Myers. She attended school in Newberg, graduating from
Newberg High School in 1962. She worked as a nurse at several senior
centers in Iowa. She married John Butts, who preceded her in death
in 1994.
Survivors include: brothers, William Myers and Aaron Myers of
Newberg; daughters, Charlotte Young, Kathleen Hegwood and Chris
Hicks, all of Newton; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her mother and an infant sister.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) in
Newton. Burial will be at a later date.

Patty Lou Beaird of McMinnville died July 25, 2006. She was 51.

Charles
R. Moore
Charles Richard Moore died Aug 23, 2006, in Marysville, Wash. He
was 79.
He was born Oct. 26, 1926, in Salem to Charles and Minnie (Bantu)
Moore. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1944.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, stationed in
Montana and Utah. He married Rosemary Capps in 1948. He attended
Linfield College after leaving the service, graduating in 1949. He
worked in McMinnville as an accountant until 1957, when he went to
work for Taylor Lumber Co. He worked there for the next 10 years,
becoming president of the company.
In 1967 he began working for the North Santiam Lumber Co. in Salem,
and started his own lumber brokerage with two partners in 1976. In
1986, he bought out the last partner and ran the business until
1991, when it was sold.
He served on the board of the North American Lumber Association,
and locally as president of the McMinnville Jaycees and was a
charter member of the Michelbook Country Club. He also served eight
years on the McMinnville Water and Power board. After retiring, he
volunteered as a long-term care ombudsman for the state government
and with Meals on Wheels.
He also enjoyed boating in the San Juan Islands.
Survivors include: wife Rosemary of Marysville; son Scott;
daughters, Linda Moore and Kaye Calkins; sister Edith Fields; seven
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers Kenneth and Ross.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Aug. 29 at the Macy & Son
Funeral Chapel in McMinnville.

Howell
Letha Emma Howell died Aug. 24 at a Newberg care facility. She was
97.
She was born Jan. 4, 1909, in Minneapolis, Minn. to Leonard and
Emma (Hiller) Hudson.
She grew up in Montana before moving with her family to Portland,
where she finished high school.
She worked as a medical secretary for Portland State University and
married Walter C. Howell, who preceded her in death in the 1940’s.
After her retirement, she moved to Sherwood, and resided in Newberg
for the last eight years of her life.
She was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church and enjoyed playing
bingo and rummy.
Survivors include: her sons Wayne of Gleneden Beach, Victor of
Oregon City and Gordon of Port Orchard; daughters Lois Krug of
Newberg, Deanne Harr of Gleneden Beach and Alta Conrad of Depoe Bay;
and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
No services are scheduled at this time. Arrangements are in care of

Lowe
Beverly Lowe died Aug. 26 at her Sublimity home. She was 79.
She was born April 1, 1927 in Milwaukee, Wis., to Ceylon and
Lillian LeVeille.
After a five-year courtship by mail, she married Donald Lowe in
1950 and lived with him in Dundee from 1959 to 1976.
They then moved to Silverton, where they resided for 29 years
before recently moving to Sublimity.
She worked as a Welcome Wagon hostess, and was active in the
Yamhill County Republican Women’s Association, and a past president
of the Silverton Hospital Auxiliary.
She enjoyed the Oregon Symphony, dining and playing bridge.
She was preceded in death by her son Andre and grandson Kyle.
Survivors include: her husband Donald: sons Bruce, Craig, and
Donald Jr.; daughter Elise; brothers Jerry and Roger LeVeille; and
six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, at
St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sublimity. Visitation hours are
today (Wed.) from noon to 8 p.m. at the Unger Funeral Chapel in

Ginger Lee Tuttle of Sheridan died Aug. 22 at a McMinnville
hospital. She was 51.
She was born on Feb. 11, 1955 in New Castle, Ind. to William and
Edna Faye (Crawley) Chandler.
She married James B. Tuttle on April 24, 1970, in California, and
they settled in Sheridan.
She enjoyed bingo, spending time with her grandchildren, and
vacationing in Reno during the hot air balloon festival there.
She was preceded in death by her father, two brothers and one
sister.
Survivors include: her husband James; mother Edna; brothers Ken and
Dusty Chandler of Newberg; sister Donna Hornsby of Sheridan; sons
Joe of Pendleton, Tim of Newberg, and Bill Hansen of Sheridan;

Springfield; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Rodney J. De Kar died Aug. 19, 2006, at his Dundee home. He was 59.
He was born Oct. 17, 1946, in Binghamton, N.Y., to Joseph and
Mildred (Chandler) De Kar.
He served with the U.S. Army from 1966-67. He married Christine in
1967 and settled in Dundee in 1978, where he worked for Gordon
Trucking Inc.
He enjoyed golf, music and was an Oakland Raiders fan.
Survivors include: wife Christine of Dundee; sons, Bob of Sherwood,
Charles of Clackamas, Jeremy of Aloha and Brian of McMinnville; 12
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Wade
Merl Wade of Newberg died Aug. 14, 2006. She was 95.
She was born April 18, 1911, in Revere, Mo., to Arlulus and Lenna
(Armstrong) Householder. She married Franklin Wade on June 23, 1928.
He preceded her in death in 1988.
She was a member of the Newberg Christian Church, and a rock hunter
who enjoyed cutting and polishing stones for crafts.
Survivors include: sons, Ben of Alma, Mo., and Vern of Goldendale,
Wash.; daughter Thelma Dinsmore of Newberg; six grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Linda Rodriguez Close Way, formerly of Newberg, died in a car
accident on May 22, 2006, in Oklahoma. She was 52.
She was born Dec. 7, 1952, in Denver to Andrew and Micaela
Rodriguez, and worked for many years as a special needs aide in the
Newberg School District. She married Terry Close in 1982, and her
second husband Jack Way in July 1992. She was employed as a position
as a special needs teacher in Wilburton, Okla., before her death.
Survivors include: husband Jack of Oklahoma; mother Micaela
Rodriguez of California; son Jonathan Close of Oklahoma City, Okla.;
brothers Dave, Victor and Richard; sisters Pauline Disinger, Mary
Williams, Rose Bjorke, Sandy Rodriguez, Amelia Brannon, Jovita
Walker and Susana Basher.
She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Terry Close; brothers
John, Gerald and Andrew; and father Andrew Rodriguez.

Sherman
Stephen Sherman of Newberg died Aug. 21, 2006, in Seattle. He was
53.
He was born on Aug. 6, 1953, in San Antonio, Texas, to Lloyd and
Carol (D’Angelo) Sherman. He attended Andrews University in
Michigan. He worked as a computer software programmer and teacher.
He married Carol Wehn on Aug. 10, 1980.
Survivors include: wife Carol of Newberg; son John of Hood River;
daughter HollieAnne White of Paradise, Calif.; and parents Lloyd and
Carol of San Antonio, Texas.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. today (Saturday) at
the Beaverton Seventh-day Adventist Church.

E. Simpson
Warren Eugene Simpson of Sherwood died Aug. 22, 2006. He was 66.
He was born Jan. 16, 1940, in Florence, Ariz., to Warren and Mary (Mulcare)
Simpson. He grew up in Texas and married Ethel Banks in 1961. He
moved to Sherwood in 1980, where he worked as a construction manager
for Providence Health Care. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran
Church in Sherwood.
He enjoyed classic cars and auto racing and was a member of the
Sports Car Club of America, the Mt. Hood Ford Mustang Club and was a
part-time pit inspector at Portland International Raceway.
Survivors include: wife Ethel of Sherwood; sons, Warren of Salem
and Brian of Dallas, Texas; daughters, Mary Lou Raney of Troutdale
and Robyn Simpson of Tigard; brothers, Neil of Tucson, Ariz., and
Harry of Arkansas; and seven grandchildren.

Robert Harold Adams died Aug. 15, 2006, in Newberg. He was 50.
He was born Dec. 1, 1955, in Portland to Merle and Delphia June
(Moore) Adams. He attended Benson High School.
He worked for Gerber Legendary Blades and Chevron in Newberg and
Tualatin. He was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include: parents Merle and June of Portland; grandmother
Mabel of Sherwood; sisters, Vicky Churchill, DeAnna Adams, Suzanne
Owen, Lillann Larsen, and Jeannie Adams; and daughter Andrea Punley
of Colton.

Fisher
Newberg native Vivian “Si” Fisher died Aug. 14, 2006, in Lincoln
City. She was 78.
She was born Sept. 17, 1927, in Newberg to Joseph and Erma
(Blackburn) Kingsland, and attended Newberg High School. In 1948,
she married Jack Llewellyn, who preceded her in death.
She married Walt Fisher in 1970, and the couple lived in Woods,
where they ran a grocery store and dress shop. Her husband preceded
her in death in 1990.
She was a member of the Eastern Star and helped establish a library
in Woods. She enjoyed traveling and visited the United Kingdom and
the Far East, in addition to many places in the United States.
Survivors include: stepsons, Frank and Sid Fisher of Woods;
half-brother Charles Kingsland of Alaska; nephews Michael Fix of
Cheshire and Gregory Fix of Eugene; and niece Pamela Fix of
Greenville, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her sister Patricia Fix in 1997.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Pacific
City Library.

V. Swift
Donald V. Swift, who formerly worked in Newberg, died Aug. 16,
2006, in Gresham. He was 77.
He was born in 1929 in Gresham to Ivan and Hazel (Theberg) Swift.
He graduated from Gresham High School in 1946.
He served in the Navy during World War II and was discharged in
1948, when he began his career as a teller for First National Bank.
He married Donna Jansen on April 30, 1949, in McMinnville.
He later earned the position of branch manager, working at banks in
Gresham, Molalla and Newberg. He then changed careers to work for
State Farm Insurance, where he earned the position of district
manager, retiring in 1993.
He was a member of the Gresham Elks Lodge and the Gresham Eagles.
He was also a member of the St. Henry Catholic Church, Knights of
Columbus and a volunteer at the Zarephath Soup Kitchen in Gresham.
He enjoyed golfing, scuba diving, travel and the company of his
grandchildren.
Survivors include: wife Donna of Gresham; sister Eileen Rutherford
of Gresham; sons Mike of Boring, Dan of Spokane, Wash., Chris of
Vancouver, Wash., Rick, Pat and Tim of Gresham; daughter Judi
Luchsinger of West Linn; 18 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
A scriptural rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Gresham
Funeral Chapel, followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m.
Saturday at St. Henry Catholic Church in Gresham.

Peggy J. Kovach died Aug. 4, 2006, at Providence Newberg Medical
Center. She was 82.
She was born May 22, 1924, in Portland to Edward and Hattie (Smith)
Lefley. She grew up near Grand Island.
Her family moved to Newberg, where she met and married Walter
Kovach, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include: sons Walter Jr. of Newberg and Jason of Salem;
two grandchildren and sister Dorothy Hines.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and two
sisters.

Schulz
David Schulz died of a heart attack on Aug. 14, 2006, at his
Newberg home. He was 63.
He was born Nov. 17, 1943, in New England to Tony Schulz and Martha
Schulz-Scott.
He worked as a home builder and married his wife Linda in May 1965.
Survivors include: wife Linda of Newberg; sons Joe and Troy; sister
Gloria Kerr and four grandchildren.
A private memorial service was held Aug. 17 at Newberg First United

Miller
James Miller, after whom Miller Gymnasium at George Fox University
is named, died Aug. 8 at his Portland home. He was 86.
He was born March 10, 1920, in Portland, and attended Grant High
School and Staub Memorial Church, where he met his future wife, Lila
Jensen.
He proposed to Lila in 1942, on the eve of his induction into the
U.S. Army. He was deployed with a field artillery unit in the South
Pacific. They were married on July 9, 1944, following his return
from the war.
Miller joined his father George and brother Robert in the family
business, Cascadia Lumber Co., where he became company president.
The business operated sawmills in Sweet Home and Toledo, and sold
lumber nationally and internationally.
The Miller family sold Cascadia Lumber in 1973, and James turned to real
estate development as a partner in the Willamette Pacific Land Co.,
along with other investments and philanthropy.
He served on the George Fox Board of Trustees from 1974 to 1986 and
held honorary trustee status thereafter. He made the lead gift to
fund the construction of the James and Lila Miller Gymnasium, built
inside the Wheeler Sports Center in 1977. The gym includes three
basketball courts and seating for 2,500 people.
The Millers’ first connection to George Fox came through their son,
Paul, a 1969 graduate of George Fox. Their daughter-in-law, Judy, is
also a graduate and serves on the board of trustees.
Over the next three decades, Miller and his wife gave millions to
help fund the construction of the Edward Stevens Center, the current
Hoover Academic Building remodel, and several endowed scholarships,
including the Miller Leadership Award for freshmen. A balcony in the
Stevens Center also bears their name.
In 1985, Miller and his wife established a charitable trust to
continue providing annual gifts to deserving causes in perpetuity.
Survivors include: wife Lila; sons Ted and Paul; grandchildren
Lauren, April, Drew and Audrey; and great-grandson Tyler.
A memorial service was held on Monday at the Portland First Church
of the Nazarene.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church’s Upward
Basketball program, or to the American Diabetes Association.

Wright
James Warren Wright died Aug. 10, 2006, in Newberg. He was 89.
He was born May 24, 1917, in Abbyville, Kan., to Walter and Edith
(Canfield) Wright. He moved to Newberg at the age of 18.
He married Thora Wood in 1938, and served in the U.S. Army and
civil service, constructing roads in Alaska. He returned to Oregon
in 1948 and worked in the Portland shipyards, later becoming a real
estate broker and starting his own firm, Wright Realty.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and beekeeping. He was a member of the
Newberg Masonic Lodge and Shriners.
Survivors include: sons, Ron of Dundee and Tom of Monmouth;
daughters, Donna Ovist of Prescott, Ariz., Joyce Reilly of Elgin and
Beckie Roberts of Pendleton; sisters, Ester, Ruth and May; 18
grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Thora in 1993; by his
second wife June in 1999; and by his brothers Bill and Dorance
Wright.

J. Groth
Betty Jean (Inns) Groth died Aug. 5, 2006, at her Dayton home. She
was 85.
She was born June 13, 1921, in Hastings, New Zealand, to to Stanley
and Violet Inns. In 1942, she met and married Bernard Groth, an
Oregonian stationed in New Zealand as a member of the U.S. Marine
Corps.
She journeyed to the United States with a group of fellow war
brides. After the war the couple traveled to several military
postings before settling near Camp Pendleton in California in the
1950s.
She worked as a bookkeeper in Encinitas, Calif., and following her
husband’s retirement from the Marines, they built a second home in
Dayton, where they moved in the 1980s. She was a hospice volunteer.
Survivors include: daughter Jacqueline Salkield of Dayton; brother
Brian Inns of New Zealand; two grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband Bernard in 1993, her parents
and sister Roma O’Shannessey of New Zealand.
A family graveside service was held Aug. 11, 2006, at the Pioneer
Cemetery in Dundee.

L. Hickman
Thomas Leonadus Hickman died July 30, 2006, in Newberg. He was 79.
He was born March 15, 1927, in Rogersville, Tenn. to Fred and Rose
Hickman. He attended school in Weiser, Idaho.
He married Diane Warren on Feb. 14, 1951, and the couple settled in
Portland. The couple moved to Newberg in the 1980s and were members
of the First United Methodist Church. She preceded him in death in
2001.
He enjoyed talking about politics and was an amateur boxer.
Survivors include: sons David and Roger; daughters Loretta, Barbara
and Cheryl; brother Fred; sister Carmen; seven grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by son Michael.
A memorial service was held Aug. 3, 2006, at First United Methodist
Church in Newberg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that
Hickman’s memory be honored by contacting one’s congressman to urge
an end to the Iraq occupation.

Marilyn Jean Willis died Aug. 5, 2006, in Sacramento, Calif. She
was 59.
She was born Jan. 8, 1947, in Sacramento. She attended California
State University at Chico, where she graduated with an accounting
degree in 1969.
She moved to Newberg, where she worked as a certified public
accountant in the Portland banking industry. She married Bob Willis
in 1972; they divorced in 1988.
She enjoyed travel, bowling, attending movies and plays, and
raising her sons.
Survivors include: sons, Jason and Derek of Los Angeles; sister
Margie Jones of Wilton, Calif.; niece Sally Sanders of Galt, Calif.;
and nephew Floyd Pyle of Los Angeles.

Leola Joyce Myers died Aug. 5, 2006, at a Tualatin hospital. She

She was born March 25, 1925, in Scottsville, Mich., to Percy and
Bertha (Mauller) Hoffman. The family moved to Oregon when she was 9
years old.
She married James Gray on July 11, 1941. He preceded her in death
in September 1984. She married Harry Myers, who also preceded her in
death.

Winona Mable Oare died Aug. 5, 2006, at Providence Newberg Medical
Center. She was 91.
She was born Dec. 26, 1914, in Eugene to John and Rama (Miller)
Robertson. She was the granddaughter of Nancy and Solomon Zumwalt,
an Oregon pioneer family. She married Glendon Oare in Florence,
where they made their home for 42 years before moving to Newberg.
She was a member of the San Jose Community Church and the Eastern
Star. She enjoyed oil painting and poetry.
Survivors include: sons, Richard of Newberg and David of San Jose,
Calif.
She was preceded in death by son Robin, one brother and four
sisters.

`Smoky' Schmoe
Ray Othel “Smoky” Schmoe, owner of Smoky’s TV Repair, died of
cancer July 26, 2006, at his family farm. He was 81.
A member of the Newberg business establishment for more than 50
years, “Smoky” was known for his cluttered downtown shop and his
expertise in fixing all types of home electronics, especially
televisions and stereos.
He was born July 19, 1925, in Olney Springs, Colo., to Gary and
Tracie Schmoe, and grew up and attended school in Newberg, earning
the nickname “Smoky” while in high school.
He was drafted in 1943, later earning a general equivalency
diploma.
He served in the Army during World War II, earning two Purple
Hearts and a Bronze Star in Europe, and was discharged as a disabled
veteran with the rank of sergeant.
He learned electronics in the service, and later served as an
apprentice before opening his own shop in 1946.
At his repair shop, he offered internships to Newberg High School
students during the 1970s and 1980s. Some of these apprentice
repairmen still kept in touch with their mentor at the time of his
death.
He was also a member of the Newberg Boat Club, and provided audio
equipment for their annual races.
At his family farm, which he purchased from his parents in 1980, he
constructed an earthen dam and artificial pond — twice, when the
first attempt proved unsuccessful — where he enjoyed rowing with his
niece Nila.
He is survived by his sisters Lila Browning of Newberg and Garyanna
Stalick of Albany; brother Merl Schmoe of Filer, Idaho, and many
nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Attrell’s
Newberg Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in

Burrows
Jeremy Patrick Burrows died Aug. 5, 2006, of cancer at his Newberg
home. He was 20.
He was born Aug. 21, 1985, to Daniel and Lori Burrows of Newberg.
He graduated in 2003 from Newberg High School, where he was a member
of the baseball and wrestling teams. He was a member of the Newberg
First Baptist Church, and was a staff assistant with middle school
and high school programs.
He enjoyed the outdoors, dirt biking, wake boarding, snowboarding
and restoring a classic Volkswagen Bug.
On Aug. 5, 2006, he married his childhood sweetheart, Emily Ann Cook
of Newberg.

Seward
Alva Jacob Seward of Yamhill died Aug. 1, 2006, of an aneurysm in a
Portland hospital. He was 84.
He was born Sept. 2, 1921, in Merriman, Neb., to John and Elva
(Saxton) Seward. When he was 15, the family relocated to Newberg. He
enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was stationed at the Kaneohe
Naval Air Base in Hawaii. After receiving an honorable discharge in
1946, he purchased land near Yamhill. After an attempt at goat
ranching, he started a sawmill and logging operation to clear land
for area farmers. On May 24, 1953, he married Fern Payne in Yamhill
Christian Church.
He enjoyed family gatherings, camping, talking politics, bargain
hunting and CB radio.
Survivors include: wife Fern of Yamhill; sons, Mark, Randall and
Russel of Yamhill; daughters, Carol Nelson of Nampa, Idaho, Darcy
Davis of Yamhill and Darla Bair of Vale; 22 grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Seward,
half-brother Mark Booth, half-sister Evelyn Edge and daughter Linda
Whitney.

Nampa. She worked as a college instructor in English at Judson
Baptist College in Portland and as a substitute teacher in the
Portland public schools. She married Ivan Adams in 1940. He preceded
her in death in February 2001.
She was a member of Newberg Friends Church and active in peace and
social justice work. She also led the George Fox Auxiliary Book Club
for many years.

Patty Lou Beaird died July 25, 2006, in a Newberg care facility.
She was 51.
She was born Sept. 28, 1954, in Walla Walla, Wash., to Adam and
Estella (Crewse) Shelley and grew up in eastern Oregon.
She moved to McMinnville, where she was a foster mother and a
member of the Northside Community Church with Stan Newcomb, her
companion of the past 16 years.
Survivors include: daughters, Jessica Vineyard of Amity, Stephanie
Beaird of Newberg and RiAnna Nelson of Amity; brother Leland Shelley
of Milton-Freewater; sisters Fern Gaines, Wanda Homblin of Milton-Freewater

Kimberly Ann Hilderbrand died July 22, 2006, in Lincoln City. She
was 35.
She was born May 13, 1971, in Portland to Arthur and Diane (Hecox)
McDowell. She moved with her family to Lincoln City, where she
graduated from Taft High School.
After graduation, she lived in Alaska and Washington before
returning to the Newberg-Sherwood area, her home for the past 15
years.
She worked for Adorn LLC in manufacturing and was a member of the
American Legion Auxiliary.
She enjoyed the outdoors, boating, camping, genealogy and her pets.
Survivors include: her ex-husband Brian of Sherwood; sons, Brandon
and Dylan of Sherwood; daughter Haylee of Sherwood; mother Diane

Glenn L. Burchfield died of cancer on May 21, 2006, in Spokane,
Wash. He was 79.
He was born Oct. 8, 1927, in Brockway, Penn., to Raymond and Grace
(Gaupp) Burchfield.
He attended Oregon State College (now Oregon State University) and
served in the U.S. Navy. He resided in Newberg for the final decade
of his life.
Survivors include: sisters, Mildred Luschen of Medford and Marie
Sessions of Seattle; two nephews and six nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Bruce.
A burial service was held in June at Siskiyou Memorial Park in
Medford.

Andree Golbin David died July 19, 2006. She was 83.
She was born June 4, 1923, in Leipzig, Germany, and emigrated at
the age of 16.
As artists, she and her husband Don David had successful careers in
New York and Oregon. She worked in a variety of styles, with
numerous gallery shows and projects that included advertising art
and book illustration. She also taught at the Parsons Art School in
New York.
Survivors include: daughter Diane David; sister Vivian Golbin of
Bennington, Vt.; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and daughter Doris
Furlong.

Eakes
Joan Lorain Eakes died July 22, 2006, at her Newberg home. She was
71.
She was born Oct 22, 1934, in Bellingham, Wash., to Wesley and
Ethel (Stafford) Franklin.
She attended Eugene Bible College, where she met the Rev. Thomas
Eakes. They were married Feb. 17, 1962.
After their marriage, the couple moved to Nebraska for a ministry
appointment. They would later serve in ministries in South Dakota,
Iowa and Washington.
In 1986, they retired and moved to Newberg. Joan continued to work
as a chef at George Fox College (now George Fox University) from
1987 until 2000.
She was a member of Open Bible Church in Newberg and enjoyed music,
singing and catering for church events.
Survivors include: husband Thomas; daughters Kimberly Johnson of
Lafayette and Rhoda Kairs of North Bend, Wash.; and three
grandchildren. One brother and two sisters preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Attrell’s
Newberg Funeral Chapel. A concluding service will follow at Valley
View Memorial Park.

Robert William Brandt died July 19, 2006, at Alterra Villas of
McMinnville. He was 77.
He was born on Oct. 12, 1928, in Sheridan to Otto and Harriett (Kiesel)
Brandt. He graduated summa cum laude from Linfield College and moved
to Salem, where he worked as a tax auditor for the state of Oregon.
He later lived in Portland, and after his retirement, Dundee, before
moving to McMinnville in 2005.
He gave to many charities over the years and enjoyed traveling,
automobiles, reading and music.
Survivors include: nephews Steve and Mike Morris of McMinnville,
and Mitch Morris of Kennewick, Wash.; niece Kathy Van Brocklyn of
Sublimity; 15 grand-nieces and nephews and nine great-grand-nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by sister Betty Ann Morris.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Macy &
Son funeral chapel in McMinnville with Chaplain Harold Otteriei
officiating. Burial is private at Greencrest Memorial Cemetery in
Sheridan.

Catherine A. Miller
Newberg native Catherine Anne Miller died July 15, 2006, at her
home near Grants Pass. She was 46.
She was born April 5, 1960, in Newberg to Frank and Margaret
(Montgomery) Miller. She lived in Dundee for close to 40 years,
where she worked as a gardener and nurserywoman. She moved to Wolf
Creek in 1999.
She enjoyed collecting sports cards, gardening, reading and panning
for gold.
Survivors include: partner Melinda Bogle of Wolf Creek; brother
Vernon Townsend of Vancouver, Wash.
A memorial gathering and potluck will be held at noon Sunday at her
residence.

Gladys
F. Barry
Former Newberg resident Gladys F. Barry died July 13, 2006, at her
Colorado home. She was 92.
She was born on Dec. 16, 1914, near Keyes, Okla. to Roy and Jeanne
(Bentley) Brown. She married Roy Twombly in April 1931. They had one
son before her husband’s death in 1934.
She married Marshall Crabtree in February 1936. The couple operated
a farm and ranch in Southeast Colorado from 1947 to 1961.
Following her second husband’s death in 1963, she moved to Denver,
where she taught English as a second language at Denver Community
College.
In June 1974, she married Alva Barry of Dundee and moved to Oregon.
He preceded her in death in 1982. In 1997 she returned to Colorado
to be with her family.
She enjoyed gardening, cats and writing letters to friends and
family in Oklahoma.
She was a member of the Chehalem Valley Baptist Church, the Royal
Neighbors of America, and the VFW auxiliary.
Survivors include: Bob and Pat Crabtree, Jeanne and Dave Foerch,
Patricia Miller, Roy and Susan Crabtree, Alfreda and Dan Brown; 18
grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren
and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by brother Kenneth Brown, sister Mildred
Brown and son, Jimmy Lee Twombly.
A funeral service was held July 18 at Olinger Highland Cemetery in
Denver.

Weldon
K. Corder
Weldon Keith Corder died July 14, 2006, at his Newberg home. He was
76.
He was born Jan. 5, 1930, in Bula, Texas, to W.K. and Lillie Bell
(Brown) Corder. He attended school in New Mexico and received a
bachelor of arts degree from California State University.
He then attended Golden Gate University in San Francisco, where he
earned his master of business administration degree. He enlisted in
the Army in 1950 and served for two years.
On May 26, 1957, he married Ethel Smith in Dundee. She preceded him
in death on April 5, 1997.
He worked for Western Union in Los Angeles for 30 years as a
manager in area accounting and data systems. From 1983 to 1990 he
worked as a plant controller for Anchor Glass Containers. He and his
wife moved to Newberg in 1997.
He was a certified internal auditor, a member of the American
Accountants Association, the American Management Association, and
the Institute of Internal Auditors.
Survivors include: brother Leon of Milwaukee; sister Lawanda Miller
of Beaverton; nephews Mike, Greg, Robert and David, and Jeff Miller
and David Smith.
A funeral service was held Tuesday in Attrell’s Newberg Funeral
Chapel. Committal followed at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

V. Jones
Lilian V. Jones died July 10, 2006, in Tillamook. She was 88.
She was born June 5, 1918, in Dundee to Vern and Olive (Flock)
Downhour. She had lived in Tillamook since 1945.
She worked for Mark Sanders Pharmacy in Garibaldi, McLean Drug
Center in Grants Pass, at Barview Park and as a bookkeeper for her
husband’s business from 1982-89 in Bay City.
She and her husband Russell Jones were grand marshals in the 2001
Garibaldi Day Parade. She was a member of the Garibaldi Fire
Department auxiliary and a Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed children,
flowers, birds, dogs and lemon drops.
She was preceded in death by her husband, first husband Walter
Andrew Staples, son David Jones and stepson Charles Jones.
Survivors include: sons, Rex Crites of North Carolina and Kenneth
Staples of southern Oregon; stepson Russell Jones of Milwaukie;
nephews Robert Jones and Ralph Harwood; 10 grandchildren; 10
great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one
step-great-great-grandchild.
A funeral service was held Saturday at the Christ’s Victory
Fellowship Church in Garibaldi. Memorial contributions may be made

E. Jacquith
David Edwin Jacquith died at his Lafayette home June 27, 2006. He
was 80.
He was born April 3, 1926, in Corvallis to Walter and Esther
(Swain) Jacquith. He attended Newberg High School and worked as a
commercial artist. He married Mary Fern on Feb. 3, 1978.
He was a member of 2nd Street Community Church and was active in
Initiatives of Change.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. July 24 at Newberg First
Assembly of God Church.

Bernice
V. Mattoon
Bernice Vera “Bonnie” Mattoon died June 16, 2006, at a Newberg care
facility. She was 90.
She was born Jan. 28, 1916, in Portland to Otto and Lydia
(Schulze). She grew up in Northeast Portland and graduated from
Jefferson High in 1934.
She attended the Oregon Institute of Technology, and after
graduation worked for the YMCA and Marshall Fields before becoming a
realtor in Lake Oswego.
On April 11, 1941, she married Alfred Mattoon in Portland. The
couple owned and operated Lake Shore Apartments from 1950-57 in Lake
Oswego, and the Heppner Hotel in Heppner from 1957-60. After
retiring, they lived in McMinnville and Newberg. He preceded her in
death in March 2004.
Survivors include: son Kerry of Dundee; three grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Maresh Red Hill
Vineyard Retreat near Dundee.

Sam J.
Myers
Sam Jack Myers died July 7, 2006, at Providence Newberg Medical
Center. He was 86.
He was born June 27, 1920, in Chelsea, Mass., to Edwin and Bella
(Larkin) Myers. At the age of 6, his family moved to Long Island,
New York.
He first visited Oregon at age 16 as a member of the Civilian
Conservation Corps posted in John Day. He later traveled to Hawaii,
where he worked in the naval shipyard for the Civil Aeronautics
Association.
He moved to Agoura Hills, Calif. in 1964, and on Oct. 2, 1966,
married Shirley Wells in Las Vegas.
For the next 39 years, he worked for the Federal Aviation
Administration, and after 1980 in the computer industry.
He retired in 1988 and moved to Oregon, where he enjoyed reading,
gardening, fishing and woodworking. He painted in oil and watercolor
and taught painting classes. He was also a stamp collector since age
7, and researched family genealogy during his last decade of life.
Survivors include: wife Shirley of Dundee; sons, Bill of Newberg
and Matthew Myers of Kuna, Idaho; brother Jim Parsons of San Angelo,
Texas; sister Sylvia McClean of Sun City West, Ariz.; four
grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Two sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
A memorial service was held at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel,
with pastor Richard Sartwell officiating. Committal was by private
ceremony.
Frances
J. Ware
Newberg native Frances Jean Ware died July 8, 2006, at Providence
Newberg Medical Center. She was 83.
She was born Feb. 26, 1923, in Newberg to Frank and Grace (Baker)
DeVore. She graduated from Newberg High School and attended business
college in Long Beach, Calif., where she met her future husband.
She married Noel Emerson Ware on Jan. 4, 1939, in Yuma, Ariz. The
couple made their home in San Diego and Long Beach while her husband
served in the U.S. Navy. In 1960 the couple moved to Newberg.
She was a member of the Chehalem Valley Baptist Church and the
Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed family gatherings and
reunions in Hawaii.
Survivors include: husband Noel of Newberg; sons, Michael of Maui,
Hawaii, and Steven of Newberg; daughter Carol Barca of Maui; brother
Jack DeVore of Salem and grandchildren Jason Klohs and Anthony Barca.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Grace, who died at age 5
and by sister Lois Livengood.
A memorial service was held Friday at the Chehalem Valley Baptist
Church.

C. Burgess
Former Newberg resident Joyce C. Burgess of Tualatin died July 6,
2006. She was 90.
She was born April 17, 1916, in Coos Bay to Arthur and Florence
(Childers) Ferrell in Coos Bay. She grew up in Newberg.
She attended George Fox University and married Dr. Guy Burgess in
1938. The couple lived in Portland before moving to McMinnville in
1949.
Following her husband’s death in 1991 she lived in Spokane, Wash.,
and Salem before moving to Tualatin in 2003.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in McMinnville. She
enjoyed playing bridge and the piano, poetry, puzzles and Bible
study.
Survivors include: sons, Clark Burgess of La Crescenta, Calif., and
Jerry Burgess of Redlands, Calif.; daughter Connie Burgess of
Tualatin; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A burial service was held July 10 at the Masonic Cemetery in
McMinnville.

R. Neill
Newberg resident Joyce R. Neill died July 7, 2006 at a Portland
hospital. She was 78.
She was born June 10, 1928, in Bruce, Alberta, Canada, to Dudley
Merritt and Ethel (Johnson) Haight. She moved to Newberg with her
family in 1945.
On Sept. 14, 1949, she married Harvey Neill in the Newberg Free
Methodist Church. She worked at the Green Lantern Cafe, Western Auto
Store and A-dec, Inc., before retiring in 1994.
She was a member of the Methodist Church for many years, and enjoyed
gardening, crocheting, playing the piano and bingo.
Survivors include: stepson Doug Neill of Las Vegas; brothers Ira
Haight of Drayton Valley, Canada, Ralph Haight of Pacific Palisades,
Calif., and Lester Haight of Newberg; sisters, Francis Peterson of
Oregon City and Gloria Storment of Newberg; and several nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by sisters Pearl Kraskey, Lola Lund and
Evelyn Lewis.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at
Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A concluding service will be in
Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg at a later date.
Leighton E. Whitsett
Leighton E. Whitsett of Aurora died July 5, 2006, of natural
causes. He was 89.
He was born Feb. 18, 1917, in Orland, Calif. He started his career
as an engineer at Douglas Air Craft in California before moving to
Aurora in 1945. He worked as a mechanical engineer at Tektronix in
Beaverton until his retirement in 1982.
He married Evelyn Yergen on May 5, 1950, in Las Vegas. She preceded
him in death in 1993.
He was a member of the Aurora Presbyterian Church and the Friends
of Historic Champoeg Park. He was a past president of the Izaak
Walton League. He was awarded in 1993 by the Oregon State parks
system for his volunteering.
He enjoyed drafting, wood carving and painting. Among his projects
were a set of signs for Champoeg Park. He also enjoyed hunting and
fishing and was active in wildlife conservation, volunteering and
teaching.
Survivors include: son Alan Whitsett of Aurora; daughters, Valertie
Lang of Aurora and Tina Wheeler of Durham; four grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held July 10 at the Simon Woodburn Funeral
Chapel. The burial took place at Champoeg Cemetery in Aurora.

Vera L.
Froemke
Vera Lorene Froemke died at her Newberg home on June 30, 2006. She
was 90.
She was born Aug. 23, 1915, in Portland to Franklin and Clara (Knorr)
Culp.
She attended Woodburn High School and married Kenneth Gillanders in
1934. The couple moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, where she worked as a
medical receptionist.
In 1954 the couple divorced and she returned to Portland. On May
10, 1974, she married Dennis Froemke and they moved to Klamath
Falls. He preceded her in death in October 1990.
She returned to Newberg in 1991 to be with her family. She was a
member of the Newberg First Assembly of God Church. She enjoyed
music, singing and playing the organ.
Survivors include: son Keith Gillanders of Walker Lake, Nev.;
daughters, Linda Meier and Judith Gillanders of Lafayette; and
grandchildren Shawn and Kristi Meier and Melinda Compton.
No funeral services are scheduled.

W. Mosier
Former Newberg resident DeMoine W. “Russ” Mosier of Oregon City
died July 1, 2006, in a motorcycle accident. He was 59.
He was born May 21, 1947, in Chickasha, Okla., and moved to
California in 1958. He served in the Naval Reserve and on active
duty in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
He moved to Newberg in 1975, and earned a bachelor of arts degree
from Linfield College. He worked as a dispatcher for Baker Rock
Resources for 15 years, and as a mentor instructor for Team Oregon.
He returned to California and Dayton before settling in Oregon City
in 2005. He enjoyed motorcycles, painting and sculpture, horses and
greyhounds.
Survivors include: parents Ray and Lavetta Mosier of Salem; fiancee
Jamie Phillips of Oregon City; ex-wife Kathy Wagner of Canby;
daughters, Laura Mosier of Beaverton and Della Mosier of Las Vegas;
brother Fred of St. Roberts, Mo.; sister Sharon Cheffins of Vista,
Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held July 6 at Cornwell Colonial Chapel in
Woodburn, followed by a burial with military honors at Willamette
National Cemetery in Portland.

Father
William J. Cary
Father William Jewell Cary Jr. died June 22, 2006, in Newberg. He
was 81.
He was born Oct. 19, 1924, in Independence, Mo., to William Cary
Sr. and Mildred (Crews) Cary.
He received a journalism degree from the University of Missouri and
a master’s degree from Northwestern University. He wrote for
newspapers in New Hampshire, California and Idaho, before purchasing
a newspaper in Fallon, Nev. After coming to Portland, he worked for
the Oregon Journal newspaper and in public relations.
He enlisted in the Army Signal Corps in 1943 and was discharged
with the rank of sergeant in 1947. He served again during the Korean
War as a first lieutenant from 1951 to 1953.
He married Genevieve Campbell in 1947 in South Strafford, Vt. She
preceded him in death in 1997.
He was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1971 and
ordained as a priest in 1973. He served in churches in Portland,
Ashland, Lincoln City and most recently at St. Michael’s in Newberg.
Survivors include: sons, William Cary III of Portland and
Christopher of Vancouver, Wash.; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) in St.
Michael’s Episcopal Church in Newberg. Disposition is by cremation.

V. Corder
Nadia Vennesa Corder died of liver cancer at her Newberg home June
27, 2006. She was 66.
She was born Dec. 8, 1939, in Newberg to Ted and Hattie (Winther)
Burgoyne. She graduated from Newberg High School and received her
nursing diploma from Providence School of Nursing in Portland. While
a high school student, she started the Newberg chapter of Future
Nurses of America.
She married George Corder in 1960 in Stevenson, Wash. The couple
spent several years traveling while her husband worked as a foreman
for the Southern Pacific Railroad.
In 1966 the couple returned to Newberg to make their home. She
worked as a nurse at Newberg Community Hospital and in private
practice.
She enjoyed reading, gardening and raising orchids. She was a
member of the Association of Operating Room Nurses.
She was preceded in death by her husband in October 2001.
Survivors include: sons, Gregory and Michael Corder of Newberg;
daughters Katryn Bain of Newberg and Jennifer O’Bryan of Sherwood;
four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday), at
Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A concluding service will follow
at Gibbs Cemetery in Sherwood. Viewing and visitation is from 9 a.m.
to service time today at Attrell’s.

“Nick” Courtney
Charles Garrett “Nick” Courtney of Sherwood died June 26, 2006. He
was 63.
He was born Dec. 24, 1942, in Tillamook, and graduated from
Beaverton High School in 1961.
He served in the Air Force, and later started his own trucking and
excavation business, Courtney and Sons, in Sherwood. A resident of
that town for 40 years, he was active in the community as a Little
League coach and Boy Scout leader.
He was also a member of American Legion Post #104, the Fraternal
Order of Eagles in Tigard and the Elks in Sherwood.
Survivors include: wife Donna of Sherwood; mother Edna Courtney; sons,
Shane and Patrick Courtney; sister Sue Kirpak; four grandchildren
and two nieces.
A graveside service was held Thursday. A memorial service and
celebration of life was held Thursday at Beaverton Christian Church.
