Virgil J. Brown
   Virgil Jesse “Buster” Brown of Springfield died July 25, 2003. He was 84.
   He was born Oct. 27, 1918, to Jay and Iva (Moore) Brown Goodell in Portland. He grew up in Newberg and at the age of 15 joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and was stationed in Nyssa. He farmed in Newberg for a short time and then began working for the Oregon Highway Department before entering the military.
   He married Alice Ashwill on April 24, 1939, in Vancouver, Wash. He was in the Pacific Campaign during World War II in the U.S. Army serving in Hawaii and Okinawa. After the war he returned to the Oregon Highway Department where he worked for 39 years.
   He enjoyed fishing, traveling with his wife, woodworking and carving. He was also a member of the Springfield Moose and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
   Survivors include: sons, Dan of Gladstone and Corky of Springfield; daughters, Dixie Pew of Dexter and Dawn Keliikuli of Kahuku, Hawaii; sister Betty Torland of King City; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wife, Alice, in 1998 and son, Gary, in 1940.
   A graveside service was held Monday at Lane Memorial Gardens in Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Peace Health Hospice in care of Buell Funeral Chapel, 320 N. Sixth St. Springfield, OR 97477.

Verna E. Polzel
   Former Newberg resident Verna Elizabeth Polzel died July 19, 2003, at a Gresham care facility. She was 87.
   She was born April 11, 1916, to John and Ada (Shedd) Pendleton in Mapleton, Minn. She spent her early years in Granite Falls, Minn., graduated from high school in Nevis, Minn., and attended a teacher’s college. In 1938 she moved to Eugene, where she attended a vocational school for photography. She married Laurence Polzel in Eugene on March 23, 1941.
   The couple moved to Portland in 1942; she worked as a homemaker and raised her family. In 1970, the family moved to Aurora, then in 1986 settled in Newberg, where she lived until 2001, when she moved to Gresham to be closer to her children.
   She was a member of Newberg Baptist Church, XYZ (Extra Years of Zest) senior group and started a prayer group in her home.
   Survivors include: husband Laurence of Gresham; daughter Janet Watkins of Portland; sons, Gary of Portland and Randy of Hillsboro; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. July 29 at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Larry Smithwick officiating. Interment is private at Valley View Memorial Park.

Jack Cadd
   Jack Cadd of Hillsboro died July 21, 2003, of heart complications. He was 77.
   He was born May 17, 1926, to Clarence and Gladys Cadd in San Bernardino, Calif. He lived with his parents and five older brothers in Ontario, Calif., until they moved to Grass Valley near Camas, Wash. In 1936 the family moved to a dairy farm near Ridgefield, Wash. His father died in 1939, then the family returned to an old farmhouse near Camas. He eventually moved with his sister and mother to Ontario, Calif., where he attended his junior year of high school. In 1944, he entered the Navy and celebrated his 18th birthday in boot camp in San Diego. He served as a radar man on a landing craft support ship. He was released from the Navy in February 1946.
   He worked at a Crown Zellerbach paper mill in Camas. In the fall of 1946, he enrolled at George Fox University. He graduated in three years with his brothers Bob and Dick in 1949. He majored in history and the Bible.
   On July 7, 1949, he married Peggy Crisman and in the fall they both attended GFU. He finished his fourth year at GFU and lettered in football and basketball. They moved to Camas and purchased half interest in a Chevron gas station with brother-in-law Charles Hanson; they sold out their share in 1957.
   After the couple’s two sons were born, they moved to Forest Grove in 1957 and bought a home. He taught sixth grade at Harvey Clarke School for nine years. He attended Oregon College of Education, Pacific University, Portland State University, Portland Community College and Stanford University. He received a master’s of education from the University of Oregon.
   He became the elementary principal at Joseph Gale School for six years and then was principal at Cornelius Grade School for 12 years. He spent his last four years of teaching at Dilley Grade School before retiring in 1989. During most of his career he also painted houses with his sons during the summers.
   His wife Peggy died of cancer in August 1995. The family has attended Beaverton Foursquare Church for more than 20 years.
   He suffered a heart attack in 1991 and received triple bypass surgery, but had several more serious heart attacks since 1991, the most recent being a month ago and then one week previous to his death.
   Survivors include: sons, Dan and David of Forest Grove; daughter Doreen of Forest Grove; brothers, Bob of Vancouver, Wash., and Dick of Newberg; sister Betty Fife of Phoenix and seven granddaughters.
   Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Beaverton Foursquare Church, 13565 S.W. Walker Road.

Lyle J. Wilson
   Lyle James Wilson died Monday July 21, 2003, at George Fox University. He was 66.
   He was born July 3, 1937, in Nampa, Idaho, to William and Hazel (Meharg) Wilson. He graduated from high school at Greenleaf Friends Academy in 1956. In the fall of 1956 he met Naomi Martin while they both attended George Fox College (now George Fox University). The couple were married on Aug. 24, 1958, at a Friends church in Tacoma. He graduated from George Fox College in 1960. From 1960-1962 he taught English and history at Jewell High School.
   From 1962-1992 he worked for the Newberg School District, first teaching English and history at the high school and then as librarian for Renne Junior High School. He received his master’s degree in library science from the University of Oregon in 1969.
   He was a longtime member of the Friends Church. He attended Nampa Friends Church as a child and started attending Newberg Friends Church during college. He has served as an usher at Newberg Friends for more than 40 years, volunteered as a youth leader, and assisted his wife as she coordinated weddings at the church. He served on the Twin Rocks Friends Conference Board of Directors for many years and for the last 14 years he and his wife served as coordinators of Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends Churches.
   He enjoyed horseshoes as a child in Nampa, winning a horseshoe tournament with a friend when he was in fourth grade. He played football during high school at Greenleaf and enjoyed the outdoors and traveling. He and his friend, Ron Staples, hiked the Oregon section of the Pacific Crest Trail, as well as many other trails. He enjoyed canoeing and camping with his family and friends. He did a volksmarch with his wife in each of the 50 states, saving Hawaii for last, where they completed volksmarches on each of the islands.
   The couple participated in mission trips with World Gospel Mission and Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends Church.
   Survivors include: wife Naomi of Newberg; son Dan of Newberg; daughter Sandra Fish of Newberg; five grandchildren; sister Edith Michael of Nampa; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and two brothers.
   A memorial service was held Thursday at Newberg Friends Church.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Twin Rocks Friends Conference Center.

Jesse O. Vibert
   Jesse Owen Vibert of Portland died July 17, 2003, in an accident on the Willamette River. He was 24.
   He was born May 27, 1979, to Philip and Marian Vibert in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was raised in Forest Grove, Cornelius and Newberg.
   According to his family he was a free man who lived and died doing what he wanted. He affected many with his humor, strength, independence, loyalty and affection. His family also said he wasn’t afraid to share his opinion, nor was he worried about what other people thought.
   Survivors include: mother Marian and stepfather Mark Bissonette of Crooked River Ranch; father Philip Vibert and stepmother Jenny Vibert of Tavares, Fla.; grandparents, Mikki Vibert of Lake Worth, Fla., Bill and Erika Freitas of Rocklin, Calif.; brothers, Philip Jr., and Robert of Tavares, Fla.; sister L. Dawn Vibert of Portland; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
   A memorial gathering will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Newberg Shilo Inn, 501 Sitka Ave.

Laura H. Walker
   Laura Harriet Walker of Newberg died July 17, 2003, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 87.
   She was born Feb. 9, 1916, to Joseph and Gennevive (Pond) Swehla in Waterlou, Iowa. She moved to Oregon in 1962 and made her home in Newberg, where she has since resided. She was a homemaker and also worked for the Newberg Free Methodist Church, where she was a member, as well as a custodian for 16 years.
   She enjoyed shopping, bingo and crafts. The past three years she lived at Chehalem Care Center, where family members said she developed strong relationships with the staff and her roommates and she enjoyed the facility’s meals. She was also crowned the 2001 Old Fashioned Festival princess of the care home.
   Survivors include: sons, Bill Gray of Sheridan and Ron Walker of Alaska; daughters, Colleen Gates of Mesa, Ariz., Kathy Williams of Lafayette, Rose Petrie of Gresham and Pam Reynolds of Newberg; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers and one grandchild.
   A graveside service was held Saturday at Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Brent Castle
   Brent Castle of Newberg died July 17, 2003, of cancer in Seattle. He was 37.
   He was born Jan. 24, 1966 in Detroit, Mich., to Keith and Lavelle (Reynders) Castle. He received a bachelor of science in business administration from the University of Oregon and worked as a mortgage broker.
   He attended the First United Methodist Church in Newberg and enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling and exploring other cultures, mountain climbing and running.
   Survivors include: girlfriend Ann Robinson of Vancouver, Wash.; mother Lavelle of Medford; sisters, Karen Crusen of Spring Creek, N.Y., Julie Castle of Portland and Christine Hammers of Kenmore, Wash. He was preceded in death by his father, Keith, in 2000, and brother, Craig, in 1974.
   A memorial service was held Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Newberg. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford.

Christine F. Messer
   Christine F. Messer of Newberg died July 13, 2003. She was 76.
   She was born July 6, 1927, in Shady Point, Okla., to Albert and Gertrude (Langwell) Mendenhall. She grew up in Greenwood, Ark.; her family moved to San Jose, Calif., in 1941.
  She married Al Streight in 1952 and the couple resided in San Jose until 1964, when the family moved to Yamhill. She was employed at Tektronix for 10 years. Her husband, Al, preceded her in death in 1983. She then married Lester Messer in July 1985 in San Diego, Calif.
   In the early 1990s the couple moved to Lafayette. Her husband, Lester, preceded her in death in 1996. In 2001 she moved to Newberg.
   She enjoyed sewing, playing the piano and crocheting.
   Survivors include: sons, Rich Streight of Carlton and Kenneth Streight of Tigard; daughter Connie Groleau of Newberg; brother Dempsey Mendenhall of Dobbins, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers Harold and Herbert Mendenhall.
   A service was held Wednesday at the Chapel of Macy & Son in McMinnville. Burial followed at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in McMinnville.

Majel Warren
   Majel (Michel) Warren of Portland died July 8, 2003, of natural causes. She was 81.
  She was born Feb. 26, 1922, to Charles and Frances Michel in California. She attended Asbury College in Kentucky and was a librarian for 30 years at Portland State University.
   Survivors include: son Craig of Dundee; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bern, in 1999.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. July 29 at Hopewell Church. Disposition was by cremation.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

Thelma W. Stava
   Thelma M. Stava of Newberg died July 15, 2003. She was 92.
   She was born Aug. 9, 1910, in Cincinnati. She moved to California and married Albert Stava in April 1944 in Las Vegas. The couple made their home in California where she worked as an assistant in a doctor’s office. The couple moved to Mt. Angel in 1970; she worked at a cannery until retiring in the 1980s. She enjoyed horseback riding and sports. She was a member of the Catholic Church.
   Survivors include sons Wayne of Newberg and Scott of Fresno, Calif.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, in 1990.
   Services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Angel. Interment following the services is at Calvary Cemetery, also in Mt. Angel.
   Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in care of Unger Funeral Chapel, 1-503-873-5141.

Amelia K. Jones
   Amelia Katherine Jones of Newberg died July 10, 2003. She was 70.
  She was born Sept. 15, 1932, to Amos and Florence Walton in Basset, Neb. In 1937 the family moved to Newberg, where she attended school. In 1949 she married John Jones Jr. and the couple made homes in Stanfield, Baker and Roseburg where her husband worked for the state of Oregon. While living in Stanfield the couple volunteered with the local 4-H club and enjoyed their basset hounds. The couple later returned to Newberg, where she worked for Allen Fruit Company from 1980 until 1993, when she retired.
  After retiring the couple traveled in their motor home and, in 1995, took an extended road trip across the country. They also spent several winters in Arizona. She enjoyed trips to the beach and spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed genealogy and spent many years researching both her own family and her husband’s family history.
   Survivors include: husband John; son Steven of Goldendale, Wash.; grandchildren, JR of Texas, Jessica of Goldendale and Tonya of Hermiston; brothers, Emerson of Newberg and Edgar of Portland; sisters, Virginia Foust of Newberg and Shirley Schaad of Canby. She was preceded in death by son Randy and sisters Rowena, Hazel and Adelia.
   A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. July 23 at Newberg Friends Cemetery. A gathering will be held at the Illinois Street Mobile Home Park recreation hall following the service.
   Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Cancer Society.

William C. Stephenson
   William Curtis Stephenson died July 9, 2003, at his home in  Dundee. He was 56.
   He was born Aug. 16, 1946, to Andy and Dorothy (Wagner) Stephenson in Santa Ana, Calif.
   At the age of 17 he joined the minor league team for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a collector of a variety of knickknacks and he worked with children, including serving as a bowling instructor. He married Shirley Beseau in Santa Ana. He worked for many years at Newberg High School in the maintenance department, retiring in 2000.
   According to his family, he was an active person. He built homes and enjoyed working with his hands. He also enjoyed watching television, especially the series “Survivor” and several other TV programs.
   Survivors include: wife Shirley of Dundee; sons, Randy of Newberg and Thomas of Dundee; daughter Sandra Brooks of Newberg and four grandchildren.
   His services were private at Dundee Pioneer Cemetery.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the research of polycythemia in care of Attrell’s Newberg Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Jack W. Hays
   Jack Wilson Hays died July 5, 2003, of emphysema. He was 67.
   He was born Oct. 22, 1935, in Waldport. He was a mechanic, served in the U.S. Navy, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion.
   Survivors include: son James; daughters, Leslie Wolf and Shawn Caswell; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   A private service was held. Arrangements were by Caldwell’s Colonial Chapel.

Wendell L. West
   Wendell L. “Rusty” West of Molalla died July 10, 2003, at an Oregon City hospital. He was 67.
   He was born Oct. 13, 1935, to Ernest and Lucile (Conner) West in San Antonio. He grew up in Texas until the age of 7, when he moved with his family to the Multnomah area. He attended Multnomah Grade School and Benson Trade School (now Benson High School). In 1952 he enlisted in the Oregon National Guard, where he served until 1955 when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. While in the Air Force he performed instrument and auto pilot repair until he was discharged and returned to Portland in 1958. He worked in trucking at Oregon Culvert, as a welder at Hervin Company in Tualatin and for the city of Newberg at its wastewater treatment plant. In 1993 he retired and spent five years as the caretaker of Oregon City Elks Park in Mulino.
   According to family members he was a devoted father and grandfather. He enjoyed traveling, camping and motorcycling, as well as converting buses into motor homes. He was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed hunting deer and elk, as well as gold mining.
   Survivors include: wife Donna of Molalla; sons, James and Andrew of Hawaii, Joel of California and Peter of Molalla; daughters, Angela (Eggers) Tolleth of Molalla and Catherine Senay of Sheridan; sister Evelyn Johnson of Salida, Colo.; five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   A memorial service was held Tuesday afternoon at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel with the Rev. Peter Friesen-Blank officiating. Committal was private.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans Association Ladies Auxiliary at Portland Veterans Association Hospital, or the Legacy Visiting Nurses Association in care of Attrell’s Newberg Chapel, 207 N. Villa Road, Newberg OR 97132.

Zola M. Hooker
   Zola Mae Hooker of Newberg died July 2, 2003, of natural causes at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 88.
   She was born Oct. 5, 1914, in Estelline, S.D., to Ernest and Minnie (Brandt) Eisnach. She was a homemaker and a member of Newberg First Presbyterian Church.
   Survivors include: son Larry of Newberg; daughter Marilyn Whitehouse of Lake Oswego; sister Delores Hooker of Las Vegas and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband R.L. (Cole) in 1992.

Raymond L. Muhr
   Raymond Leroy Muhr died July 3, 2003, at his home in Mosier. He was 73.
   He was born Dec. 6, 1929, to Cecil and Julia (Babe) Muhr in Bridgeport, Neb.
   He grew up on the family farm in western Nebraska and attended college at Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb. While attending college he met his future wife, Miriam Miller; they were married Feb. 12, 1950, in Chadron. The couple moved their family to Newberg in 1960. He worked at Tektronix in Beaverton for the next 23 years until his retirement in 1983.  After retiring, the couple traveled in their motorhome and eventually settled into a summer home in Mosier, and a winter home in Casa Grande, Ariz.
   Family members said he was known for his involvement with both Newberg and Yamhill County F.F.A and 4-H and as a Master Gardener. He served as the sheep superintendent at the Yamhill County Fair for many years and was recognized for his championship sheep-breeding program. He was also involved in dairy goat judging and enjoyed golfing and cooking.
   He was a member of West Chehalem Friends Church for more than four decades and was a frequent church and youth activity volunteer. A volunteer at senior centers in Wellton, Ariz., and Mosier, he enjoyed cooking and meal preparation.
   Survivors include: wife Miriam of Mosier; sons, Stanley of Woodland, Wash., Steve of Newberg and Mike of Silverton; daughters, Sue Campbell of Vancouver, Wash., and Marcia Astleford of Dundee; brothers, Larry of Kimball, Neb., Doyle of Portland, Gary of Dayton and Leon of Manning; sisters, Glenna Jackson, Bonnie Libby and Darlene Gibbs, all of Newberg; 22 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brother, Marvin, sister, Lois Holland, and one great-grandchild.
   A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today (Saturday) in West Chehalem Friends Church with Pastors Adam Muhr, Julius Jepson and Paul Almquist officiating. A committal service will follow at Noble Cemetery, Newberg.

Randall T. Farmer
   Randall T. Farmer of Wheaton, Ill., died July 4, 2003, while swimming at Bethany Beach in Michigan. He was 44.
   He was born Aug. 27, 1958, in Seaside to Sam and Dorothy Farmer. He was a software engineer and developed software for the computer and robotic industries. He was a graduate of Glenbard West High School in 1977. In 1981 he graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a bachelor of science degree with majors in physics, math and computer sciences.
   From 1970 to 1981 he lived in Glen Ellyn, Ill. From 1985 until the present he lived in Wheaton, Ill. He served on the mission board at Wheaton Evangelical Free Church and was a member of the Pathfinders adult Sunday school class. He was an avid jogger, weight lifter and played golf often.
   Survivors include: parents, Sam and Dorothy Farmer of Newberg; brothers, Gary of Silverton and Ken of Greenwater, Wash.; one niece and three nephews.
   Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Wheaton Evangelical Free Church. Burial will be Monday at Friends Cemetery in Newberg.

Corrinne Wenrick
   Corinne (Rickert) Wenrick of West Linn died July 1, 2003, in Lake Oswego. She was 81.
   She was born May 8, 1922, in Portland to Edward and Laura (Barden) Rickert. She attended Western Baptist Seminary, George Fox University and Linfield College and received her teaching degree from Southern Oregon College. She taught school for two years. She was a member of the West Linn Baptist Church. On Aug. 25, 1946, she married Bud Wenrick.
   Survivors include: husband Bud of West Linn; daughter Colleen Miller; son Craig; brother Laurance and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. July 20 at West Linn Baptist Church, 1984 McKillican St. Burial will be at Willamette National Cemetery.

Robert L. Allen
   Robert Lee Allen died July 2, 2003, at his Dundee home. He was 59.
   He was born Sept. 3, 1943, to Willard and Esther (Welke) Allen in Arvada, Colo.
   He grew up and received his early education in Arvada. After graduating from high school in Long Beach, Calif., he moved to Portland and attended Lewis & Clark College for several years. He then moved to Lake Oswego. From 1965 to 1967, he worked at a service station in Portland, where he met his future wife, Nancy Martes. He was in the U.S. Army in Vietnam for a year. Upon his return, he married Nancy in Beaverton on Oct. 26, 1968. The couple lived for six months in Fort Benning, Ga., and then they returned to Beaverton.
   In 1970, they moved to Oregon City, where he managed a farm for about six years. Then he drove trucks for a year, before working at the Payless warehouse in Wilsonville for the next 12 years. In 1980, the couple moved to Dundee, where they have since resided.
   He farmed until his illness was discovered in 2001. He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, mechanics and working on crossword puzzles.
   Survivors include: wife Nancy of Dundee; daughter Kimberly Schilling of Milwaukie; son Ryan of Beaverton; brother Charles of California; and sister Joan Walsh of Long Beach, Calif.
   A memorial service was held Saturday in Attrell’s Newberg Chapel with the Rev. Peter Freisen-Blank officiating. Interment was private.

Stewart W. Grenfell
   Stewart William Grenfell of Vandenberg Air Force Base in California died on July 3, 2003. He was 44.
   He was born Oct. 18, 1958, to William and Katherine (Angerstein) Grenfell in Vancouver, Wash. He was raised and attended school in the Portland area and graduated from Benson Technical High School in 1976.
   During his military career he served six years in the U.S. Coast Guard, and served in the U.S. Air Force for the last 17 and a half years. His military stations included Grissom Air Force Base in Peru, Ind., and Vandenberg AFB. He was head of the planning department of the civil engineering division at Vandenberg and attained the rank of technical sergeant. On Dec. 30, 1987, he married Connie Shultz in Peru, Ind.
   He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and enjoyed gardening, animals, fishing, hiking, photography and was family oriented. According to his family he was also a people person.
   Survivors include: wife Connie of Vandenberg AFB, Calif.; daughters, Brittany of Vandenberg, AFB, Calif., and Dana Taylor of Peru, Ind.; son Jamie Shultz of Peru, Ind.; brothers, Steven of Portland, Joe Oreskovich of Tacoma and Robbie Oreskovich, Paul Fracasso, and Billy and Jon Grenfell all of Portland; sisters, Jessica White of Tigard and Jennifer Haller of Newberg; and two grandchildren.
   A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Young’s Funeral Home in Tigard. Private interment will be in the family plot at Riverview Cemetery in Portland.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Hopewell House Hospice care of Young’s Funeral Home, 11831 S.W. Pacific Highway, Tigard, OR 97223.

Eleanor M. Grigsby
   Eleanor Matilda Grigsby of Newberg died July 1, 2003. She was 87.
   She was born Nov. 15, 1915, to Alma and Olaf Bergman in Des Moines, Iowa. She grew up in Des Moines and married Donald Ross in 1940. The couple moved to Southern California in 1941 and her husband died in 1943.
   In 1947 she married Sherwood Grigsby. They enjoyed the outdoors, rock collecting and she was a member of the Lutheran Church. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening and picking and eating fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as knitting, needlepoint and shopping.
   She moved to Newberg in 1997 to be closer to family and lived at Avamere for the last three years.
   Survivors include: son Richard of West Hills, Calif.; daughter Judyth Cox of Newberg; sisters, Helen Harliss of Brighton, Colo., and Evelyn Sheperd of Anaheim, Calif.: brothers, Kermit of Spokane and Donald of Cedar Rapids, Iowa: two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   There will be a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. today (Saturday) at Avamere.

Ira E. Washburn
   Ira E. Washburn of Newberg died June 16, 2003. He was 94.
   He was born Feb. 24, 1909, in Oklahoma to Ira Sr. and Martha (Jenneke) Washburn, and grew up in Wichita, Kan., where he met his wife Tracy. They were engaged at 16 years of age and were married almost 70 years.
   He graduated from Kansas State University as an architect, and later moved to Portland during The Depression. He became a noted Portland architect in the 1930s, designing many luxury homes in the Portland Heights.
   Soon after building a large home on the shores of Lake Oswego they became missionaries in Colombia, South America. They spent 19 years in Colombia and Costa Rica. Today, family members said, more than 400 churches exist in South America because of the work that the couple began. In 1958 he founded Pan America Mission Inc., and remained active in the organization until his death.
   In 1960, he returned to his field of architecture and founded Church Architectural Service of Portland, which over the span of 30 years designed more than 500 church buildings in Oregon and Washington, Idaho and Alaska. Three churches in Newberg were designed by his firm, including Newberg First Christian,    Newberg Free Methodist and the Newberg Assembly of God.
  He enjoyed gardening and was described by his family as a kind and peaceful man.
   Survivors include: sons, Allan of St. Charles, Mo. and Delmar of Newberg; daughter Patricia Hunt of Irvine, Calif.; eight grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wife, Martha, in 1999.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. July 10 at Calvary Temple in Portland. Private committal with vault interment was at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Edna L DeLong
   Edna L. DeLong of Florence died June 25, 2003, at a Florence care facility. She was 87.
   She was born June 25, 1916, to Fern and Frances (Snodgrass) Atteberry in Elkland, Mo. She grew up and attended elementary and high school in Elkland, then Southwest State College in Missouri for two years. In 1936 she moved to San Jose, Calif., where she resided for five years before moving to Stockton, Calif.
   During World War II she worked at Stockton Fuel and after several years moved to the East Bay area. On Oct. 10, 1949, she married Russell DeLong in Reno. For 10 years she worked as a teller, vault keeper and assistant operations officer for Wells Fargo Bank, then returned to Stockton for 10 years. Due to a disability she worked for an optometrist for five years before retiring.
   In 1992 the couple moved to Warren, where they made their home until 1997, when they moved to Florence and were living there at the time of her death. She enjoyed being with her family, gardening and crocheting.
   Survivors include: husband Russell of Florence; son Gary Potter of Washington, D.C.; brother Fern Atteberry Jr. of Elkland, Mo.; sisters, Joanne Sharp of Elkland and June Cody of Atlanta; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
   A graveside service was held Tuesday at Valley View Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Attrell’s Newberg Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Glen A. Brandt
   Glen A. Brandt of Newberg died June 23, 2003, of cancer. He was 59.
   He was born Jan. 30, 1944, to Gustav and Myertle (Christie) Brandt in St. Paul, Minn. He went to school in St. Paul, Minn., served in the U.S. Navy and was a welder for 40 years. He enjoyed restoring antique cars and welding. He married Kathleen Hicks in August 2002.
   Survivors include: wife Kathleen of Newberg; mother Myertle of Lodi, Calif.; daughter Tammy Gaskell of Hillsboro; son Paul Hanson of Newberg; brothers, Clyde and Warren of Lodi, Calif.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Gus.
   Disposition was private and by cremation. A private service will be held.

Frances E. Jenkins
   Frances Elizabeth Jenkins died June 26, 2003. She was 79.
   She was born Sept. 3, 1923, to Frank and Kate (Smith) Pratt in Lincoln, Neb. She attended high school and two years of college. On June 10, 1945, she married Wardell Jenkins. She worked as a secretary for Lane Electric Co-op in Eugene for several years and was working there at the time she retired.
   She was a longtime member of Elmira Church of Christ and most recently a member of the Newberg Christian Church. She was coordinator for the blood mobile in Lane County, belonged to a travel club, and sang with the Sweet Adeline’s singing group. She enjoyed crafts, sewing and keeping the family records, recording every birth, death and address change.
   Survivors include: son Richard of Alpine, Wyo.; daughters, Pat McGarraugh of Newberg and Karen Bernard of St. Paul; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother and five sisters.
   A funeral service was held Sunday at Newberg Christian Church in Newberg with Pastor Lee Shafer officiating. A concluding service followed at Newberg Friends Cemetery.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers in care of Attrell’s Newberg Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Kenneth Leis
   Former Newberg resident Kenneth Leis died June 25, 2003. He was 63.
   He was born Aug. 31, 1939, to Victor and Roma (Stephenson) Leis in McMinnville. He received his elementary education in Yamhill and graduated from Newberg High School in 1957. He spent most of his life in Oregon.
   On March 12, 1965, he married Linda Ludwig. He worked for Tektronics, A-dec Inc. and was president of Forest Medical Products Inc. at the time of his death. He served in the Oregon National Guard while in Newberg and loved antique cars and gardening.
   Survivors include: son Kevin of North Plains; daughter Kathy Grandy of Portland; brothers, Dennis of Newberg and Dale of Pahrump, Nev.; grandchildren, Taylor Gandy and Lindsey Leis; and former wife Linda of Hillsboro.
   A funeral service was held Tuesday at Donelson, Sewell & Matthews Mortuary in Hillsboro. Interment was at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland.
