March 30, 2005
Martha `Inez' E. Scrivner
    Newberg resident Martha “Inez” Elnora Scrivner died March 25, 2005, in Troutdale. She was 92.
   She was born Nov. 30, 1913, to Charles and Minnie (McCubbin) Rogers in Havana, Ark. She moved to the Hillsboro area in 1946 with her husband, Tilford. She was a homemaker until 1963, when she went to work at the Tuality Community Hospital, where she worked in the physical department for 10 years. In 1979 her husband preceded her in death. In 1982 she moved to Newberg to be close to her children. She attended River Street Church of God.
   Survivors include: 12 children; 34 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; five half-brothers and sisters; and two stepbrothers.
She was preceded in death by one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
   Viewing and visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at River Street Church of God with Pastor Ron Palmer officiating. A concluding service will follow at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland.

Magdalena Thierjung
   Newberg resident Magdalena Thierjung died March 24, 2005, at a Newberg care facility. She was 92.
   She was born Sept. 23, 1912, to Nichlous and Magdalena (Mennich) Augustin in Setschan Feld, Yugoslavia, where she spent her early years and attended school. On Feb. 10, 1931, she married Peter Thierjung in Augustin, Yugoslavia; they later moved to Austria. In 1951 the couple moved to Los Angeles and then to Newberg in 1972. On May 31, 1976, her husband preceded her in death. She lived in Newberg until her death.
   Her family said she was a devoted mother and grandmother who helped raise her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, baking and cooking.
   Survivors include: sons, Peter of Cerritos, Calif., Nikolaus of St. Paul and George of Huntington Beach, Calif,; daughter, Elisabeth Kroo of Newberg; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by brother Sebastian Augustin.
   A rosary will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at St. Peter Catholic Church; funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. with Father Jim Nibler officiating. Committal with vault interment will follow at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Elvin R. Payne
   Newberg High School graduate Elvin R. Payne died March 20, 2005, in Lincoln City. He was 87.
   He was born April 26, 1917, to Pearl and Emily (Emmerson) Payne in Hankinson, N.D., where he was raised. He married Lila Newton on June 5, 1941, in Vancouver, Wash. He moved to Oregon. He graduated from Newberg High School and from Walla Walla College in 1950. He served in the Army. He started working in the early 1950s for Oregon’s highway department as a draftsman, retiring in 1980. His wife preceded him in death that year. He lived primarily in Amity and Salem until 1984.
   He married Elva Henderson on Nov. 18, 1984, in Pacific City. He has lived there since. He has been on 93 Maranatha missions around the world the past 20 years. He was active in Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and was an elder for many years.
   Survivors include: wife Elva of Pacific City; sons, Lester and Donald of Amity and Neal of Chattanooga, Tenn.; stepson Robert Henderson of Walla Walla; daughters, Julia Thatch of Dundee, Janice James of Camas, Wash., Marie Thornton of Freeland, Wash., and Carol Keller of Burlington, Wash.; stepdaughter Doris Ripley of Beaverton; brothers, Clyde and Jessee of Gaston, Earl of Newberg and Ted of Amity; sisters, Thelma Winters of Portland, Vadah Dunn of Oregon City and June Krause of Sherwood; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by: daughter Ardina Payne in 1947 and brother Cashius.
   A service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Seventh-day Adventist Church in Newberg with pastors Tim Mayne and Greg Brothers officiating.

Lillian L. Dunham
   Longtime resident Lillian Lena Dunham died in her sleep on Feb. 10, 2005, at her home in Newberg. She was 86.
   She was born Aug. 5, 1918, in Darien, Wis. She was a dental equipment assembler for A-dec Inc. She has lived in Newberg since 1972. In 1939, she married Herschel H. He preceded her in death in 1973.
   Survivors include: daughter Jan Hanson of Canby; son Jerry of Billings, Mont.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   No services were held per her request.
   Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Dawna M. Bynum-Boyd
   Dawna Marie Bynum-Boyd died March 16, 2005, at her home in rural Newberg. She was 41.
   She was born June 17, 1963, to Jack and Virginia (Talbert) Bynum in Upland, Calif. At 10, she moved to St. Paul and later to Newberg. She attended elementary school at the Seventh-day Adventist in McMinnville and graduated high school from Laurelwood Academy in Gaston. She attended Portland Community College and the University of Miami in Florida, earning an accounting degree. She returned to Oregon and graduated from Portland State University with a master’s degree in accounting, and she became a licensed certified public accountant.
   On June 13, 1993, she married Daniel Boyd in Lake Arrowhead, Calif. For a period of time she operated her own private practice, and then she went to work for Clark County (Wash.). Her husband died March 16, 2005.
   She was an avid horseperson and competed in endurance riding competitions. She had been developing a horse therapy program. She enjoyed movies, reading and the outdoors. She was a member of the D.A.R.E. Oregon Inc. and served on its board of directors in Portland.
   Survivors include: daughter Tanya Boyd of Corvallis; brother Dan Bynum of Dundee; mother Virginia Bynum of Newberg and nephews, Bradly, Nathan and Kyle.
   She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Tammy, and father Jack Bynum.
   A memorial service was held March 21 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A concluding service followed.

Daniel J. Boyd
   Daniel Joseph Boyd died March 16, 2005, at his rural Newberg home. He was 47.
   He was born June 6, 1957, to Douglas and Joan (Platt) Boyd in Mount Clemens, Mich. He moved when he was 4 to Los Angeles, where he lived 12 years. He moved to Orange County and finished his education. In 1978 he moved to Wilsonville, then McMinnville and in 1980 to Newberg. On April 4, 1981, he married Susan Hayden. They divorced in 1991. On June 13, 1993, he married Dawna Bynum in Lake Arrowhead, Calif., and they made their home in the Newberg area. She died March 16, 2005.
   He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.
   Survivors include: father Douglas of Mission Viejo, Calif.; daughter Tanya Boyd of Corvallis; brother Jeffrey of Mission Viejo; sisters, Laurie Boyd and Nancy Nissen, both of Lake Arrowhead, Kathleen Boyd of Atlanta and Diane Egan of Mission Viejo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by brother Michael and mother Joan.
   A memorial service was held March 21 at the United Methodist Church in Newberg. Committal was private.

Elsie A. Harlacher
   Elsie Anna Harlacher died March 18, 2005, at a Newberg care facility. She was 97.
   She was born Jan. 5, 1908, to John and Anna (Weiler) Reed in Gove, Kan. After living in Nebraska, Idaho and Washington, her family settled in 1919 in Newberg. She attended Pacific Academy and Pacific College (now George Fox University), as well as the Oregon Institute of Technology, where she taught shorthand.
   After doing office work in Portland for several years, she married Galen Harlacher on Sept. 4, 1938. The couple made their home in northwest Newberg, where they resided all of their married life. In May 1986 her husband preceded her in death. She was a member of the Dunkard Brethren Church of Newberg.
   Survivors include: daughter Wanda Wayman of Newberg; grandchildren, Steven Roedel of Newberg and Lori Thompson of Angleton, Texas; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.
   Viewing and visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road. A graveside service with vault interment will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg with Elder Galen Litfin officiating. A memorial service will follow at noon at Chehalem Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Adrian Hall officiating.

Benjamin F. Schaad
   Newberg native Benjamin F. Schaad died of a brain tumor March 6, 2005, at his home in McMinnville. He was 82.
   He was born June 2, 1922, to August and Anna (Bartruff) Schaad in Newberg. He received his early education at Rex Hill Elementary School, along with five other students. He graduated from Newberg High School and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Willamette University. Throughout his education he played catcher and outfield for the school baseball teams. He married Hazel Pearson on Feb. 17, 1946, in Newberg. She preceded him in death in 1985.
   He taught biology in Newberg, Taft, Dayton and McMinnville. He coached football, basketball and baseball and served as the athletic director of McMinnville High School for 12 years, retiring in 1984.
   Long before the term “streamkeeper” was commonly used, he was one for Drift Creek. With his knowledge of biology he fought the U.S. Forest Service and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in their management of the creek.
   He was a lifelong baseball fan.
   He was baptized a Methodist in 1922 and was active in the McMinnville United Methodist Church from 1959 until his death, serving on many church committees.
   Survivors include: daughter Karen Spear of Newberg; son Doug of Seattle; grandsons, Forrest and Garrett of Seattle; sisters Hedwig Stang of Newberg and Miriam Hausch of Portland; brothers, Elmer of Newberg and Lloyd of Portland.
   He was preceded in death by brothers, Clarence and Wesley.
   A service was held March 12 at United Methodist Church in McMinnville with Pastor Steve Ross officiating.

Elaine ‘Linda’ M. Duffield
   Newberg native Elaine “Linda” M. Duffield died March 5, 2005, at her home in McMinnville. She was 63.
   She was born Dec. 4, 1941, to Ralph and Orpha (McKinney) Hymer in Newberg. She graduated form Newberg High School in 1960. She married Edward Uken Jr. on April 6, 1962, in Vancouver, Wash. She graduated from Forest Grove Nursing School in 1962. In 1967 she received a nursing degree from Oregon Health and Sciences University.
   She lived in Newberg form 1968 to 1982, when she moved to McMinnville, where she ran an adult foster care home. In 1984 she moved to Lincoln City, where she worked at a hospital. In 1986, she returned to McMinnville, where she remained until the time of her death.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990.
   On April 15, 1997, she married Noah Duffield in Reno. She worked in various Yamhill County nursing homes for 35 years. She retired at 61 due to health problems.
   She enjoyed crocheting, pool, fishing, television and reading. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Newberg, as well as of the American Pool Players Association.
   Survivors include: son Russel Uken of McMinnville; daughters, Angela Glavah of Newberg and Lisa Gadberry and Tina Tapia of McMinnville; stepdaughter Debra Webb of Forest Grove; sisters, Roxanna Schuchardt of McMinnville, Savanna Lutz of Eugene and Sharon Wright of Sheridan; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her second husband in 1998, as well as son Michael.
   A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. today (Saturday) at the chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans, McMinnville, with spiritual councilor Phil McBrien officiating.

Mary R. Feldman
   Newberg resident Mary Ruth Feldman died March 7, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 94.
   She was born Feb. 21, 1911, to Philip and Pearl Arnold in Dexter, Mo. She married Maurice Feldman in 1944. They moved in 1972 from Bakersfield, Calif., to Hawaii. He preceded her in death in 1979. Due to her health, she moved in 1996 to Newberg to be near family. She attended the First Baptist Church.
   She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and collecting sea shells. The family said she was a great cook and loved to entertain.
   Survivors include: daughters, Joyce Sherman of La Grande and Betty Sherman of Newberg; son Philip Feldman of Bakersfield; sister Beulah Scharf of St. Louis, Mo.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
   Private services will be held at the Hawaiian Memorial Park in Kaneoha, Hawaii.

Thomas L. Plescher
   Former Newberg building inspector Thomas Lee Plescher died March 7, 2005, at his home in Yamhill. He was 53.
   He was born Dec. 23, 1951, to Harold and Barbara (Nielsen) Plescher in Grand Rapids, Mich. He grew up in Rockford, Mich., where he attended Rockford High School. He enlisted in the Army and, after, traveled and worked odd jobs. In 1974 he moved to Newberg, where he resided until relocating to Yamhill 18 months ago.
   He graduated from Chemeketa Community College with an associate’s degree in arts. On Jan. 22, 1983, he married Christine Raguckis in McMinnville. He worked as a building inspector for the city of Newberg and later for the city of Tigard for more than 20 years before his retirement. His wife preceded him in death in July 2001.
   He was an outdoor enthusiast and sportsman, enjoying bow hunting, fishing, tennis, swimming and walking his dogs.
   Survivors include: daughter Tawnya Aleksynas of Tualatin; brothers, Dan of Calumet, Mich., and Chris of Lowell, Mich.; sister Jill Leale of New Orleans; and grandchildren, Chase and Calahan Aleksynas-Crawford of Tualatin.
   A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Pike Cemetery in Yamhill with Pastor David Case officiating.

Marjorie E. Brown
   Newberg resident Marjorie Eileen Brown died March 3, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 73.
She was born Sept. 15, 1931, in Broken Bow, Neb. She moved to Oregon with her family at a young age and graduated from Newberg High School in 1949. She married Lowell “Brownie” Brown in July 1949 in Vancouver, Wash. They made their home in Newberg. She was a stay-at-home mom and volunteered at schools.
   She enjoyed crafts, sewing, board games and watching women’s tennis.
   Survivors include: husband Lowell of Newberg; daughters, Cheryl Brown of Corvallis, Caryl McPherson of Hillsboro and Dawn Reddick of North Platte, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; five great grandchildren and brothers, Bud and Carl, both of Newberg.
   No service will be held.
   Memorial contributions may be made Yamhill County Special Olympics.

Salvatore J. Toto
   Salvatore J. Toto died March 2, 2005 at a Newberg care facility. He was 89.
   He was born June 3, 1915, in Jersey City, N.J. The family moved to Passaic, then Clifton, N.J., where he spent most his life. In 1941 he married Eleanor Pantano. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 24 years. In 1978, he retired and moved to Scholls to be closer to his daughter. He spent the last several years of his life in a Newberg care facility.
   He enjoyed spending time with his family, tending to his orchard and garden, meeting new people and discovering the Northwest.
   Survivors include: daughters, Theresa LaRocca of Sherwood and Joyce Bonilla of Larkspur, Colo.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother Joseph; sisters, Mary Dragotto, Grace Fusco, Lucy Tortorice and Anna Toto; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by wife Eleanor in 2003.
   A vigil was held March 6 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A funeral mass was held March 7 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg. Committal followed at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Henry J. Conway
   Former Newberg High School teacher Henry James “Jim” Conway died March 3, 2005, at his home in Newberg. He was 51.
   He was born Oct. 17, 1953, to Arnold and Murel (Taylor) Conway in Portland. He lived in Tualatin before moving in 1967 to Newberg. He graduated from Newberg High School, where he competed at football, wrestling and baseball. His family said he was an excellent singer who sang at many weddings and other occasions. He graduated from Southern Oregon University and taught at Newberg and at Grant high schools. He also coached football, wrestling, baseball and golf.
   Survivors include: parents, Arnold and Murel Conway of Newberg; sons, Nick of Newberg and Joey of Portland; daughter Natalie of Portland; grandmother Vivian Conway of Newberg; brothers, Michael of Newberg and Dennis of Yamhill; and grandchildren, Kelsey and Kolbi.
   A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. March 12 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg with Father Jim Nibler officiating.

Nadine M. Ronglien
   Newberg resident Nadine Marie Ronglien died Feb. 20, 2005, at a Portland hospital. She was 44.
   She was born March 10, 1960, to Gordon and Retha (Pratt) Ronglien in Portland. She grew up in Canby and in 1978 graduated from Canby High School. In 1979 she married and moved to Newberg. In 1992 she moved to Olympia and later to Kent, Wash., where she lived until 1996. After living in Wahoo, Neb., until 1997, she returned to Newberg, where she remained until her death.
   She was a member of Newberg First Assembly of God Church in Newberg. She volunteered for F.I.S.H. (Friends In Service to Humanity) for many years. She was a fan of Disney movies. She enjoyed making clear glass plates and decorating them. She collected John Deere products, as well
   Survivors include: sons, Jason Shreck of Lincoln, Neb., Adam Shreck of Omaha and Brian Shreck of Oxnard, Calif.; sister Ramona Mortier of Eagle River, Alaska; and two nephews.
   A memorial service was held Feb. 26 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor David Benson officiating. Committal followed at Zion Cemetery in Canby.

Patricia F. Senecaut
   Patricia F. Senecaut of Newberg died Feb. 20, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 71.
   She was born Nov. 2, 1933, to Everett and Rebecca (Cox) Knotts in Des Moines, Iowa. She married Rene Senecaut Jr. in June 1954. They moved to Newberg in 1965.
   She enjoyed golf and was a former member of the Michelbook Country Club. She also enjoyed sewing and cooking, especially making bread. She was a member of the Rural Homemakers and of the Christian Gospel Assemblies Church.
   Survivors include: husband Rene of Newberg; son Brad of Newberg; daughters, Jan Cabor of Lacey, Wash., and Jody Wright of Madill, Okla.; sisters, Phyllis Sylvester of Dundee and Joan McNelly, Harriett Wolff and Ruth Gillaspie, all of Newberg; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by sisters, Peggy Middlekauff and Beverly Baird.
   A memorial service was held Feb. 25 at Christian Gospel Assemblies in Newberg.

John D. McNay
   John Dauphinee “Jack” McNay died Feb. 21, 2005, in Missoula, Mont. He was 84.
   He was born Sept. 19, 1920, to Thomas and Lena McNay in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, where he graduated from Bedford Road High School in 1939. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1941, serving during World War II. Assigned to a tank recovery unit, he rose to the rank of staff sergeant and served as a parts man, a career he continued in civilian life.
   Honorably discharged in 1946, he worked in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, where he married June Buckner in June 1950. They lived in Asheville, N.C., and Sidney and Missoula, Mont. They became U.S. citizens in 1961. He worked for car dealerships in Montana.
   He enjoyed spending time with family and camping. For many years, he served as equipment manager for Little League baseball. He played on his Canadian Army unit’s hockey team. He was a member of the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association and of the Bethel Baptist Church. In 1989, he traveled to Great Britain and Ireland with his sister Betty, researching the McNay family history.
   Survivors include: wife June of Missoula; sons, Scott of Luckey, Ohio, Reid of Wichita, Kan., Lindsay of Great Falls, Mont., and Shaun of Newberg; sisters, Margaret Long and Elizabeth McNay, both of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
   He was preceded in death by his parents.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at the Bethel Baptist Church in Garden City, Mont., with pastor David Winters officiating. A reception will follow.

Ferdinand Ochsner
   Newberg resident Ferdinand “Ferd” Ochsner died Feb. 19, 2005, at a Newberg care facility. He was 88.
   He was born Dec. 17, 1916, to Jacob and Elizabeth (Bothman) Ochsner in Clinton, S.D. He grew up and received his early education in South Dakota. In 1936 his family moved to Portland. On Jan. 19, 1940, he married Geraldine George in Portland, where they made there home until 1948 when they moved to Newberg. He worked at Bob’s Auto Company for a time and built and owned Ferd’s Auto Clinic in 1968. He then sold imported autos and changed the name to Newberg Imports Inc., which he sold when he retired in 1988.
   A member of the Newberg Church of Christ, he was an elder for several years. He enjoyed working on his acreage and having farm animals; he also built birdhouses and bird feeders. He was a member of the Newberg Rotary.
   Survivors include: son Kenneth of Dundee; daughters, Jeanne of Beaverton and Jan of McMinnville; brother Bill of Portland; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Newberg Church of Christ with Pastor Kevin Kopsa officiating. Committal is private at Valley View Memorial  Park in Newberg.

Kenneth L. Brown
   Former Newberg resident Kenneth Lee Bryan died Feb. 17, 2005, at a Portland nursing home. He was 73.
   He was born July 12, 1931, to Edward and Mary (Davis) Bryan in Baltimore, Md. He served in the military from March 1953 to March 1961, including years at the front line in Korea. On Jan. 20, 1962, he married Delphine Schmidt at the St. Mary’s Cathedral in Portland. He worked as a painter.
   He enjoyed baseball and traveling. On Aug. 20, 1976, a near-fatal accident occurred and he was either hospitalized or in nursing homes from that day until the time of his death. He lived in Newberg from 1985 to 1992. On Nov. 11, 1988, his wife preceded him in death.
    Survivors include: sister-in-law Joyce Lim of Portland and nieces and nephews, J.J., Jody, Jeff, Jennifer, Jason and Justin.

Wilma L. Kelly
   Wilma Louise Kelly died Feb. 15, 2005, at her Sherwood home. She was 68.
   She was born Sept. 24, 1936, to Kesler and Bessie McDonald in Kimball, Neb. At a young age she moved with her family to Milton-Freewater, where she attended school and graduated from McLoughin High School. She worked for the Safeway Store in Milton-Freewater and in 1969 moved to Sherwood. She was employed at the Barber Boulevard Safeway Store and then began working at Rex Hill Vineyard, where she worked until retiring five years ago.
   She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Besides being a fan of Elvis, she was an avid sports fan, especially of the Portland Trail Blazers and of NASCAR racing.
   Survivors include: sons, Norm Shults of Sherwood, Terry Kelly of Southerland and Mike Kelly of Sherwood; five brothers; five sisters; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by son Rick Shults and daughter Sandra Kelly.

Edith E. Parrett
   Longtime Newberg resident Edith E. Parrett died Feb. 14, 2005, at a Newberg care facility. She was 94.
   She was born July 21, 1910, to Louis and Lillian (Andrews) Putnam in Portland, where she grew up, attending elementary school and Grant High School. During her senior year her family moved to Newberg and she graduated from Newberg High School. She graduated from Behnke Walker Business College in Portland. She married Clifton Parrett on Aug. 11, 1934. They made their home in Newberg and she worked as a secretary for attorney Herb Swift. In March 1995 her husband preceded her in death. She remained in Newberg until her own death.
   She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, sang in the church choir for more than 60 years and was a member of the church women’s organizations. She was also a member of the Txaddi Tau Club. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and cooking for family and friends.
   Survivors include: daughter Carol Morter of Newberg; brother Gale Putnam of Berkley, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by daughter Virginia Tervo and four brothers.
  A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today (Saturday) at First United Methodist Church with pastor Jane Shaffer officiating. Committal is private at Dundee Pioneer Cemetery.

Helen Dorothy
   Helen “Joyce” Dorothy of Sherwood died Feb. 10, 2005. She was 79.
   She was born Sept. 13, 1925, to Leif and Agnes (Firelein) Dodson in Beach Grove, Ky., where she was raised and graduated from high school. She married Bernard Dorothy on June 9, 1946, in Nevada. They made their home in the Los Angeles County area. The couple moved to Oregon in 1989, settling in Salem. She was involved in the Calvary Baptist Church in Salem. She and her husband moved to Sherwood several years ago to be closer to family.
   She enjoyed traveling with her family.
   Survivors include: husband Bernard of Sherwood; son Jeff, a pastor in Sherwood; daughter Jann Dorothy of San Rafael, Calif.; sister Eloise Jones of Vincennes, Ind.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Sherwood Community Friends Church, 930  S. Sherwood Blvd.

Stan H. Radzio
   Newberg resident Stan H. Radzio died Feb. 13, 2005, at a Portland hospital. He was 52.
   He was born Oct. 15, 1952, in Tempe, Ariz. He married Kay Ward on Aug. 8, 1971, in Chandler, Ariz. His primary employer was Cadence Design in Tigard, where he worked 12 years. He lived in Yamhill County since 1980.
   Survivors include: wife Kay of Hillsboro; daughters, Elizabeth and Rebecca Radzio of Hillsboro; and sisters, Angela Burns of Collins, N.Y., and Felicia Peters, Phoenix, Ariz.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at the Beaverton Foursquare Church, 13565 S.W. Walker Road.

Rose V. Journey
   Rose Vera Journey died Feb. 7, 2005, at her home in Newberg. She was 93.
   She was born Sept. 10, 1911, to Frank and Thelma Jordan in Plainview, Neb. The eldest daughter of six children, she helped her mother can food, make clothes, tend to household chores and raise the younger children, as well as help feed and care for many farm animals.
   She married Orville Journey on March 7, 1929. During the Depression she and her husband moved west looking for work, and ultimately settled in Newberg. During World War II she and her husband worked in a munitions plant and as welders in a shipyard. Later, she supplemented her husband’s income by working in the fields. Her husband preceded her in death in 1983.
   Survivors include: daughter Viola of Newberg; sister Dorothy Webb of Newberg; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held Feb. 10, 2005, at West Chehalem Friends Church.

Orpha J. E. Wright
   Former Newberg resident Orpha Jane Ellen Wright of Sheridan died of cancer on Feb. 15, 2005, at Oakwood Country Place in McMinnville. She was 85.
   She was born Sept. 10, 1919, to Clark Anderson and Mary Ann McKinney in Molalla. She married Ralph Hymer on Dec. 23, 1936. They did wall papering and painting when they worked together. They divorced in 1949. In 1951 she married Walter Wright. She helped him on their small farm in Newberg, as well as in the canneries. He preceded her in death in 1962. She then worked in nursing homes and as an apartment manager with daughter Sharon. She also worked in daughter Savanna’s restaurant in Barrow, Alaska.
   She enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles, plants, reading and birthdays when family traveled from around the country to see her.
  Survivors include: daughters, Roxanna Davis-Schuchardt, Savanna Lutz, Elaine Duffield and Sharon Wright; stepson Melvin Wright; brothers, Joseph and Alfred McKinney; sister Matilda Knodel; 18 grandchildren; many great- and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by: husband Walter; brothers, Charles, Francis, Richard and Raymond McKinney; granddaughter Dory Henry; great-great granddaughter Bethany Bowman; and grandson Michael Etheridge.
   There will be no services or memorial per her request. Disposition is by Crown Memorial Center of Tualatin.

Juanita Zahn
   Former Newberg resident Juanita Zahn died Feb. 15, 2005, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene. She was 84.
   She was born Aug. 9, 1920, to James and Birdie Eppler in Hamilton County, Texas. She was raised and educated in Coleman County, Texas. In 1941, she married Robert Thompson in San Angelo, Texas. They lived in Colon, Panama. In November 1947, her husband was killed in an automobile accident.
   She moved to Hood River and worked for her brother, Bill, in his restaurant. She married Walter Zahn in 1953. They lived in Portland and Powers.
   She moved with her family in 1962 to a 27-acre farm in Newberg. She worked various jobs during her lifetime, including operating the green chain in a lumber mill and working as a waitress and a cafe owner. Her career in Newberg included working for several families in the community. She retired in 1981 after working in the Newberg School District for more than a decade as a cook and then manager for the high school cafeteria. Due to health issues, she spent the past two years with her daughter in Junction City.
   She became a member of the First Baptist Church since 1962. She spent her retirement years enjoying her family and serving in the community as a Pink Lady at Providence Newberg Hospital. She enjoyed volunteering within in her church nursery and as a volunteer for 4 Squares.
   Survivors include: sister Geneva Belt of Yakima; daughter Joanne Gregersen of Junction City; son Clyde Zahn of Newberg; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by husband Walter in October 1998.
   Viewing and visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon today (Saturday) at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. today at Newberg First Baptist Church with Pastor Larry Smithwick officiating. A private committal service will be at Valley View Memorial Park.

Orval J. Clausen
   Newberg native Orval James Clausen died Feb. 3, 2005, at the Portland home of his children. He was 75.
   He was born May 21, 1929, to Henry and Louise (Dressel) Clausen in Newberg. He received his grade school education at Central School. He quit his first year of high school right after the football season. He worked in a saw mill, as a logger, at a tavern and at a golf course.
   He married Emily Smith in 1950. After 32 years of marriage to her, he moved to Randall, Wash., where he met and married Sandy Garrison. She preceded him in death in 2003.
   He had rheumatoid arthritis and degenerative disc/spine disease. His family said he lived with pain, but was clear in mind to the end.
   He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and playing pool.
   Survivors include: son Garry of Portland; daughters, Geraldine Birchard of Portland, Cynthia Dahlquist of Portland, Karen Kelly of Milwaukie and Connie Anderson of Elk Grove, Calif.; brothers, Rex of Coos Bay and Virgil of Creswell; aunts, Florene Corder of Newberg, Emma Kondraski of Newberg and Irene McFall of Sherwood; uncle Leonard Dressel of McMinnville; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Norieta Hanna, and daughter, Jackie Clausen.
   Per his request, no service will be held.

Doyle E. Council
   Doyle E. Council died Feb. 12, 2005, at his home in Newberg. He was 74.
   He was born March 25, 1930, to Claude and Rosa (Jordan) Council in Quail, Texas, where he was raised and educated. In 1951 he joined the U.S. Army. He married Patricia Everest on Aug. 2, 1952, in Kelso, Wash.. They made their home in Newberg.
   He worked for Western Kraft in Beaverton for a few years, then went to work for Boise Cascade in Salem. After working there for 28 years, he retired in 1992; his last position was as maintenance supervisor.
   He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors. He was a past member of the Newberg Jaycees and was an assistant scout master for Troop 265 in Newberg while his boys were involved. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newberg.
   Survivors include: wife Pat of Newberg; sons, Jeff and Kevin, both of Newberg; daughter Teresa McClister of Newberg; brothers, Claud of Antlers, Okla., and Murray of La Grande; and four grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by brother David in 1955.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Newberg. Private interment will be at Fernwood Pioneer Cemetery in Newberg.

Ida M. Rutschman
   Ida Margaret Rutschman, who had friends in the Newberg area, died Feb. 12, 2005, at care facility in McMinnville. She was 87.
   She was born Dec. 4, 1917, to Claud and Ellen Coats at their home in Rufus. She attended Rufus High School, before attending Oregon State University, where she met and married Carl Rutschman. They briefly lived in Dufur and Condon before moving to a farm near Dayton, where they resided 61 years.
   She enjoyed sewing, quilting, traveling, cooking, gardening and reading. She was active in Unionvale Community Church and a member of the Dayton Reading Club and Pleasantdale Community Club. She and her husband traveled the world, visiting Asia, Africa, Mexico and Europe.
   Survivors include: husband Carl; children, Carol and Dale Elmblade of Veneta, Terry and Linda Horton of Salem, Frank and Nellie Rutschman of Dayton, and Brent and Jan Biles of Hopewell; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Eakin, Lois Haskell and Nell Melzer; and brother Chet.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Jim and Bill, and sister Anne.
   A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Unionvale Community Church.

Gayle A. Christenson
   Gayle Arlyn Christenson died Feb. 7, 2005, at her Baker City home. He was 73.
   He was born in McMinnville in 1931 to Chester and Lola (Johnson) Christenson. He attended school in Newberg and graduated from high school there in 1950. He received training in radio engineering and moved to Salt Lake City to work as a radio announcer. He worked a short time in the oil fields of Wyoming before he moved to Detroit, Oregon. There he went to work for his grandfather, who owned and operated Detroit Phone Company. The town of Detroit was being relocated for the damming of the Santiam River. He worked to rebuild and move the phone system of Detroit and two smaller towns nearby.
   He worked at Pacific Northwest Bell as janitor for three months in Portland before moving to a company job in Baker City, where he married Karen Metcalf, a telephone operator, in 1954. He retired from the phone company in Baker in 1989.
   He enjoyed gardening, hunting, travel and fishing. He was a brother of the Baker Elks Lodge and coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball for several years.
   Survivors include: wife Karen of Baker City; sister Norma Sanford of Keizer; daughters, Carol Phillips of Baker City and Joni Sager of Grants Pass; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents.
   An Elks service and celebration of life will be held at the Baker Elks Lodge at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Opal M. Sprecher
   Former Newberg resident Opal Marzene Sprecher died Feb. 8, 2005, at a Portland hospital. She was 77.
   She was born March 16, 1927 in Eureka, S.D., to Martin and Louise (Kessler) Grosz. She grew up and attended school in several areas as her father was a minister. The family lived in Yankton, S.D., New Leipzig, N.D., and Missoula, Mont.; she graduated from Kulm High School in Kulm, S.D., in 1945. She attended Yankton College and worked in a bank.
   On Jan. 4, 1948, she married Daniel Sprecher in New Leipzig, N.D.; they spent their honeymoon moving to Oregon. They remained in Newberg except for two short stays in Taft to further their education. She worked for the News-Register newspaper in McMinnville for several years on a part-time basis and then for the Newberg Graphic for more than 15 years. Her husband preceded her in death in July 1972.
   She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg and was the church organist for many years. She sang with the Sweet Adeline’s Chorus, was a volunteer for Red Cross Blood drives and was an avid Bunko player. She also enjoyed traveling, doing crossword puzzles and was a Portland Trail Blazer’s fan.
   Survivors include: sons, Larry Sprecher of The Dalles and Tom Sprecher of Silverton; daughters, Cheryl Roberts of The Dalles and LuAnn Remington of Hood River; brother Willard Grosz of Kansas City, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sister, Betty Grosz

Paul Comfort
   Former Newberg resident Paul Comfort died of lymphoma on Feb. 4, 2005. He was 63.
   He was born April 16, 1941, in Tecumseh, Mich. He served in the Air Force. He moved in about 1986 to Newberg and in 1995 to Portland. He graduated from Portland State University and was a mail handler for the U.S. Postal Service. In 1995 he married Lana Bryson.
   He died the same day as his father-in-law, Harry Bryson.
   Survivors include: wife Lana; sons, Brian and Charles; mother Nova; sisters, Norma Campbell and Marion Neff; brother Albert; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   A joint funeral for him and his father-in-law was held Feb. 11 in the Chapel of City Bible Church in  Portland.

Harry Bryson
   Harry Bryson, who has family in the Newberg area, died of congestive heart failure Feb. 4, 2005. He was 84.
   He was born Feb. 8, 1920, in Rainier. He served in the Army in Iran and Iraq during World War II. In 1968 he moved to Nahcotta, Wash., and was a boatwright for Eastpoint Seafood. In 1941 he married Sylvia Jenne. He moved in 2002 to Portland.
   He died the same day as his stepson, former Newberg resident Paul Comfort.
   Survivors include: wife Sylvia; daughter Lana Comfort; sons, Jan and Ryan; sister Donita Robertson; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
   A joint funeral for him and his stepson was held Feb. 11 in the Chapel of City Bible Church in Portland.

Ruth C. Lumbrick-Stopa
   Former Newberg resident and teacher Ruth Catherine Lumbrick-Stopa died Jan. 30, 2005. She was 90.
   She was born Sept. 29, 1914, in Metcalf, Ill. She earned a bachelor’s degree in teaching from Eastern Illinois Teachers College. She moved to Oregon in 1955 and earned a master’s degree in teaching from Oregon State University. She taught in Newberg schools, mostly junior high, from 1955 to 1965.
   Teaching was her lifelong profession, family members said, although she was also employed for a short time at the Department of Agriculture. She lived in Newberg, Eugene and Keizer.
   Survivors include: sons, Roger, John and Stephen; daughter Patricia Carlson; grandchildren, Stephanie Bladen, Lorri Temple, and Tyler and Jennifer Stopa; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Tyson, Courtney and Piper.
   A service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. A private interment will be held at Belcrest.

Danny Coburn
   Newberg native Danny Coburn died Feb. 5, 2005, at his McMinnville home. He was 58.
   He was born Nov. 8, 1946, to Jesse and Rosie (Comer) Coburn in Newberg, where he was raised and attended high school in the early 1960s. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Vietnam War as a crane operator on the USS FireDrake, an ammunition supply ship. He earned three medals and two stars. He worked at Rex Mobile Home and Izzy’s restaurant in McMinnville.
   He married Bonita Jewell in 1969; they divorced in 1972. He raced stock cars in Lebanon in the early 1970s. He lived in Arizona in the 1990s and worked as a cook at the Grand Canyon Cavern. He returned to McMinnville in 1998. He spent most his life in Yamhill County.
   He enjoyed restoring and customizing cars. He enjoyed billiards, joking with friends, playing cards and family barbecues.
   Survivors include: son Danny of Lafayette; daughter Jaime of Coos Bay; brothers, Doug of McMinnville and Bill of Canby; sisters, Liz Hubbard of McMinnville and Dorothy Lunsford of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; and one grandchild.
   He was preceded in death by brother Jack.
   Private services will be held. Interment will be at Friends Cemetery in Newberg.

Barbara L. Brown
   Barbara L. Brown died of cancer Feb. 6, 2005, at her home in Amity. She was 71.
   She was born Dec. 18, 1933, to Lester and Lorene (Bell) Mitchell in Tulsa, Okla. She moved in 1939 to Oakland, Calif., where she was raised and educated.
She married Walter “Skeeter” Brown on Sept. 24, 1963, in Fullerton, Calif. She moved to Oregon in 1967.
   She enjoyed bowling, competing nationally and winning multiple league trophies. She enjoyed golf and competed in several tournaments, including last year’s Oak Knoll American Cancer Golf Tournament, for which she was the largest fund-raiser. She also liked playing bingo for charities. She enjoyed dancing, traveling, painting, crocheting, sewing and knitting. She attended the Willamina Free Methodist Church.
   Survivors include: husband Walter of Amity; sons, Joseph Medeiros of McMinnville, Larry of Delano, Calif., and Barry of Sheridan; daughters, Janice Moss of Newberg, Anna Redl of Sheridan, Michelle Miller of McMinnville, Judy Brown of Delano, Calif., and Carol White of St. Charles, Mo.; 25 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by brother Charles Lester and son Bruce Brown, as well as by granddaughters, Lorene Medeiros and Desiree Moss.
   Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans, McMinnville. A service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Nazarene Church in McMinnville with Pastor Gary Widrig officiating.

Ethel M. Dressel
   Ethel Maryan Dressel died Feb. 1, 2005, in a McMinnville care facility. She was 84.
   She was born one of 10 children on Oct. 20, 1920 to William and Ethel (Morse) Hays in Pittsburg, Kan. She grew up in the South and moved to Newberg in 1937, graduating from Newberg Union High School.
She married Leonard Dressel in Vancouver, Wash. They lived in Newberg and McMinnville.
   She worked at Nap’s Grocery and made wedding cakes. She owned a novelty pillow business, Jeri-Kay Enterprises and the Cookie Jar Restaurant in Newberg.
She enjoyed sports, reading, walking the beach and her family.
   Survivors include: husband Leonard; sons, Bill of Tigard, Jerry of Milwaukie and Mike of McMinnville; sister Goldie Brunson of Newberg; brother John Hays of Silverton; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded by one brother and six sisters.
   A service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 301 South River St., Newberg.

Arlene S. Wilson
   Arlene S. Wilson died Jan. 30, 2005, at a local care home. She was 86.
   She was born May 18, 1918, to Charles and Dollie (Settlemier) Horn in Portland. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1937. She attended cosmetology school and worked as a beautician in Portland.
   She married Daniel Wilson in June 1947. They then moved to Newberg where he began his chiropractic practice.
   She was a member of the United Methodist Church for many years. She belonged to a number of organizations, including American Legion Auxillary, Republican Womens Auxillary and the Elks Lodge.
   She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, animals and traveling with family and friends.
   Survivors include: son Daniel of Vancouver, Wash.; daughter Patricia Hesedahl of Newberg; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many neices and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and one sister.
   A service was held Feb. 3.

Jerry W. Paris
   Jerry W. Paris died Feb. 4, 2005. He was 64.
   He was born Jan. 4, 1941, in Evansville, Ind., and moved with his family to Southern California when he was 4. At 18, he joined the U.S. Navy. He specialized in aviation electronics and helped write the maintenance manual for the F4 Phantom fighter jet. “Chief,” as he was known to friends, served several tours on the USS Kittyhawk and the USS Constellation during the Vietnam War.
He married Kirsten in 1969 in San Diego.
   Having served 20 years, he retired from the Navy as chief petty officer in 1979. He moved to Oregon, where he continued his career in avionics with Columbia Helicopters of Aurora. He retired from there in 1998. He lived in Bend in retirement, illness bringing him to Tualatin in 2004.
   He enjoyed classic cars, fishing, woodworking, gourmet cooking, photography, the beauty of Central Oregon and laughing with family and friends. “Dad” to many Navy enlistees, he opened his home to sailors who couldn’t be with their families.
   Survivors include: his wife; daughter, Shari Scales of Tualatin; son John of Newberg; sister Dee Geib of San Bernadino, Calif.; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by brother John, sister Patsy and his parents.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Hilltop United Methodist Church in Tualatin. Private interment will be held at the Willamette National Cemetery on Friday.

   Theresia Taeubel died Feb. 5, 2005, at her Newberg home. She was 91.
   She was born Aug. 14, 1913, to German parents Johann and Maria (Linz) Novak in Franztal, Yugoslavia. She worked on her family’s farm until Sept. 8, 1931, when she married Jakob Taeubel in Franztal. She worked on her husband’s family farm until the couple left Yugoslavia in October 1944 during the Communist takeover and fled to Austria. Eight years later, in 1952, they immigrated to Los Angeles, a trip sponsored by the Catholic Church. She worked as a housekeeper. In 1971, she retired and they relocated to Newberg, where she has since resided. On April 20, 1993, her husband preceded her in death.
   She enjoyed growing roses and grapes, from which she and her husband made wine. Her family said she was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg.
   Survivors include: sons, Richard of Newberg, Walter of Ooltewah, Tenn., Fred of Reno and Erich of Gaston; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her brother.
   Viewing and visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road. Recitation of the Rosary followed by a funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg with Father Jim Nibler officiating. Concluding service with vault interment will follow at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Gerald M. Pike
   Gerald Milam Pike died of lung cancer Feb. 2, 2005, at his Newberg home. He was 61.
   He was born May 7, 1943, to Morris and Nola (Scudder) Pike in Friona, Texas. He was educated at South Salem High School and at Phagan’s Beauty School. He worked as a cosmetologist.
   He was a member of the Democrat Party. His hobbies included gardening and flower arranging.
   Survivors include: partner James Kapron; brothers, Albert, David and Morris Jr.; sisters, LaJuana Drazdoff and Carolyn Bennett; and 17 nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents.
   A service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at Hayden Lakefront Grill, Century Hotel, 8187 S.W. Tualatin-Sherwood Road.

Gary Wendling
   Gary Wendling of Sherwood died of cancer on Jan. 26, 2005, in Newberg. He was 64.
   He was born Aug. 19, 1940, to Albert Wendling and Nita Foss in Whiting, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army. He married Janet Johnson on Aug. 18, 1999.
His family said he was a man of all trades.
   He was a member of Abate Motorcycle Club and of the Red and Whites. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, traveling and spending time with family.
   Survivors include: wife Janet; mother Nita Foss of Dundee; sons, Jason of California and Shawn Johnson of Newberg; daughter Wendy West of Beaverton; brother Herbert of Dundee; sisters, Pam Asboe of Dundee and Linda Wendling of Iowa; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Albert, in 1943 and by brother Bob in 1997.
   A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at the Church of the Nazarene, 23177 N.E. Old Yamhill Road. A gathering will follow at 3 p.m. at Ye Olde Pizza Shoppe, 2515 Portland Road.
   Donations for a headstone will be accepted at the memorial service.

Margret M. Chastain
   Margret M. Chastain of Newberg died Jan. 29, 2005, at Alterra in McMinnville. She was 84.
   She was born July 8, 1920, to Chris and Elizabeth Gangle in St. Francis, Minn. She worked at Dundee Cannery. She also worked as a welder and in a shipyard during World War II.
   She enjoyed gardening, camping and her grandchildren.
   Survivors include: sons, Kenneth, Larry and Lynn Chastain, all of McMinnville; daughter Linda Hale of Madras; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by husband, Edwin, in 1968; son Richard; sisters Tillie Stanley and Midge Killian; and brother Jerry Gangle.
   Burial was held Feb. 2 in Lebanon.

David L. Baker
   Newberg native David LeRoy Baker died Feb. 1, 2005, at a Portland hospital. He was 44.
   He was born May 31, 1960, to Clarence and Willetta (Hoard) Baker in Newberg. He received his early education at Dundee Grade School and Renne Junior High School; he graduated from Newberg High School in 1979. He worked at Freelin-Wade Company in McMinnville for 13 years as a metal extruder and for short times at Gaylord Manufacturing Company and Precision Interconnect.
   He was diagnosed with leukemia in November 2000. He proceeded with a bone marrow transplant and several other treatments. He has been on disability for the past few years.
   He enjoyed taking care of his yard and his flowers, different styles of music and animals. His family said he was dedicated to his daughters and sons.
   Survivors include: mother Willetta Baker of Newberg; daughters, Cassandra and Amanda Baker, both of Newberg; sons, Isaiah and Noah, both of Carlton; and sisters, Terri Mathews of Dundee, Valerie Gardner of McMinnville, Vickie Hooper of Newberg and Lisa Cook of Newberg.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 12 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road. Committal is private.

Anthony J. Moreira
   Anthony (Tony) Joaquin Moreira died Jan. 27, 2005, at Marian Estates in Sublimity. He was 92.
   He was born May 22, 1912, to Anthony and Maria Moreira in Delano, Calif. When he was 10 years old, he was preceded in death by his father. He began working to support himself at 13.
   In 1935, he married Claudine Garcia in Hanford, Calif. They had two children. He worked as a ranch hand and dairy farmer in the San Joaquin Valley. In World War II, he was a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps and taught flying.
   On May 14, 1945, he married Bernice Plo in Carson City, Nev. They had three children. The couple owned and operated an ice business along with a trailer park in Lompoc, Calif. They moved to eastern Oregon and owned and operated a grocery store, gas station and the post office in Umapine until 1952. After selling the grocery store, they moved to Rex Hill in Sherwood. They bought a farm and raised walnuts, prunes and strawberries. He also worked various jobs in Newberg: assistant manager at Nap’s Thriftway, manager of Safeway, and a real estate agent for Dolash Realty. He later opened his own real estate office. In the 1960s, he worked for Fred Herring’s fruit & nut processing company. He worked as manager until retirement in 1977.
   He accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and was devoted to studying the Bible and to teaching others of God’s love. He was active in the Assembly of God Church.
   He was an avid hunter and fisherman. His wife joined him on hunting trips in later years. After retirement, he an his wife spent much time at Coyote Rock RV Park on the Siletz River fishing salmon. He enjoyed gardening.
   Survivors include: wife Bernice of Sublimity; daughters, Vivian Murry of Killeen, Texas, Margaret Moffitt of Jefferson, Kathleen Sellard of Tehachapi, Calif., and Jeri of Aloha; sisters, Rose Creasy of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Mary Wettengel of Walla Walla, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his son Anthony J. Moreira, Jr.

Vilas A. Hinkle
   Newberg resident Vilas A. Hinkle died Jan. 19, 2005, in Newberg. He was 91.
   He was born April 28, 1913, to Grover and Eila (Eschliman) Hinkle in Spalding, Neb. He grew up and received his early education in Nebraska. On Oct. 3, 1935, he married Margaret Brannan. They moved to Yakima, Wash., in 1946. They worked on a diary farm until 1956. They relocated to Bellingham, Wash., where he worked in the Mt. Baker plywood mill. He retired in 1980 and moved to Phoenix, Ariz. In January 1992, he and his wife moved to Newberg. His wife preceded him in death in 2000.
   He was a member of River Street Church of God in Newberg.
    Survivors include: son Owen of Newberg; daughter Nana Warburton of Auburn, Wash.; sister Maxine Walrath of Primrose, Neb.; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by daughter Marlyn Hinkle in 1988.
   A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at River Street Church of God, 715 S. River St., Newberg.

Ruth Mills
   Newberg resident Ruth Mills died Jan. 30, 2005, at a Portland hospital. She was 75.
   She was born April 14, 1929, to William and Flora (Harned) Harris behind the George Washington Carver Homestead in Carthage, Mo. She attended grade school in Diamond, Mo. In July of 1936, she moved with her family to Yakima, Wash. In December of that year they moved to Cottage Grove. The family relocated again in 1942 to Greenleaf, Idaho, where she graduated from Greenleaf Academy.
   From 1949 to 1951, she attended George Fox College (now George Fox University) in Newberg. On Nov. 22, 1951, she married Glen Mills in Greenleaf, Idaho. She worked at several different jobs including the cannery and dry cleaning, but most of her work was on the family farm.
   She enjoyed gardening, travel and cooking. She was an involved member of Sherwood Friends Church.
   Survivors include: husband Glen of Newberg; sons, Chuck and Mark, both of Newberg; daughter Joyce Mills of Portland; brother Louis Harris of Washington; sisters, Wilma Magee of North Carolina and Pat Bolin of Las Vegas; grandchildren, Ryan and Dylan Mills; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by 11 brothers and three sisters. The surviving brother died five days later.
   A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ken Vanden Hoek officiating. Committal is private.

Frances E. Shadden
   Former Newberg business owner Frances E. Shadden died Jan. 25, 2005, at Maryville Nursing Home in Beaverton. She was 89.
   She was born March 30, 1915, to James and Emma Anderson in Harrison, Ariz. At 16 she moved to Cornelius. She graduated from Hillsboro Union High School. She married Dee Shadden on March 30, 1939, in Tacoma, Wash. She lived in North Plains and in Gaston. They moved in the early 1940s to Carlton, where they bought the Log Cabin restaurant. They sold it later that decade and started the Shadden Lumber Company in Carlton, later entering into a partnership with Loy Shadden and Herb Holst. From 1969 to 1973 she and her husband, along with Loy Shadden, owned and operated the Copperstone Lounge and Restaurant in Hillsboro. From 1973 to 1990 she owned and operated the Owls Trunk Ladies Apparel in Newberg. Her husband preceded her in death in 1976.
   She was a member of the Michelbook Country Club of McMinnville and of the First Baptist Church in Carlton. She enjoyed gardening, playing bridge and spending time at her beach house. She was a member of the Carlton School Board for 13 years and was involved in other Carlton civic affairs.
   Survivors include: son John of Hillsboro and daughter Jane Shadden of Aloha.
  She was preceded in death by sisters Elsie Murray and Hallie Cartwright.
   A service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Carlton First Baptist Church. Her final resting place will be the Old Scotch Church Cemetery in North Plains.

Jack W. Faubel
   Jack Willis Faubel died Jan. 22, 2005, at a Newberg care facility. He was 87.
   He was born March 7, 1917, to Henry and Mary (Farley) Faubel in Wisner, Neb., the 11th of 12 children. He graduated from Wisner High School with many athletic records and honors. He continued his education at University of Nebraska.
   On Oct. 28, 1939, he married Mary Hanks in Mullen, Neb. The couple owned and operated Faubel Grocery Store in Thedford, Neb., until 1949. After selling the grocery store, he went into carpentry and worked at various places in the Thedford area. In the early 1950s he relocated to Colorado Springs, Colo., where he started a contracting business. He built award-winning custom homes in the area for 25 years under the slogan “A House That Jack Built.” He and his wife lived in the community of Black Forest until 1984, when they moved to Dundee.
   He loved working with wood and made beautiful lamps, candlesticks and little ducks that he gave to friends and family. He was known for his “monster cookies.” He was a familiar face at the Newberg Senior Center for lunch and visiting with his friends. At his homes in Black Forest and Dundee, he took great pride in his Iris gardens and his other flowers. In November 1995, his wife preceded him in death.
   Survivors include: son Jack of Defuniak Springs, Fla.; daughter Sherry Jungwirth of Newberg; brother Merlin of Lincoln, Neb.; sister Alice Lowry of Thedford, Neb.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, with the Rev. Robert Quanstrom officiating. Committal service is private in Thedford, Neb.

Kermit H. Rollins
   Kermit Hardie Rollins died Jan. 17, 2005, at a Newberg care facility. He was 91.
   He was born Dec. 18, 1913, to Hardiman and Wilhelmina (Jensen) Rollins in Lyman, Wyo., where he grew up and graduated high school. He moved to Green River, Wyo. A prize fighter/boxer, in 1932 he qualified for the Olympics, but refused to go because the organization wouldn’t qualify his best friend in another weight class.
   In 1935, he married Mildred Williams and made a home in the Rock Springs area. They were married for 17 years.  He later married Genevieve and made a home in Ogden, Utah, where he worked as a miner for the Union Pacific Coal Company for 15 years. Union Pacific trained him as an electrician and he worked on the company’s diesel locomotives for 43 years, retiring in the mid-1980s. His wife preceded him in death in the early 1990s. He relocated to Newberg.
   He enjoyed hunting, fishing and sports. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of Newberg. His family said he was a devoted father and grandfather.
   Survivors include: sons, Ronald of Washington, Kermit of McMinnville and Hardie of Newberg; brothers, Carl of Arizona and Lewis of Salt Lake City; sister Estelle Bunn of Green River; 31 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
   A funeral service was held Jan. 22 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Bishop Elijah Dickson officiating. Committal followed at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Leonard H. Pfohl
   Leonard Henry Pfohl died Jan. 20, 2005, at an Albany care facility. He was 89.
   He was born April 30, 1915, to William and Matilda Pfohl in Livingston, Mont. He was orphaned at about 2 years old. His Uncle Alex and Aunt Sara Martin raised him on a ranch in the Tom Miner Basin. He worked as a sewing machine repairman, meat cutter and building contractor. He was married to Ila Pfohl for more than 30 years and the couple lived in Newberg for more than 10 years.
   He enjoyed playing the organ, violin and guitar. He sang and performed professionally for many years. He enjoyed fishing, tying his flies and telling tales of his adventures as a youth in Montana’s wilderness.
   Survivors include: son Robert of Newberg; daughters, Gail Arno of Portland, Sharon James of Oregon City and Sandy Clark of Montana; and his wife’s children, among them Linda Alexander of Gold Beach. He was preceded in death by son Leonard.
   A celebration of his life was held Jan. 25 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. Committal was at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland.

Arden L. Peters
   Arden Lynn Peters died Jan. 4, 2005, at his home in Tigard. He was 69.
   He was born May 23, 1935, to Herman and Clara (Folda) Peters in Grass Valley. He graduated in 1953 from Moro High School, and in 1956 from the Oregon Technical Institute (now Oregon Institute of Technology) in Klamath Falls. He served two years in the U.S. Navy. He owned a tire store and gas station, and retired as a salesperson for Portland General Electric in 1997.
   He was a lifetime member of Lake Oswego Lions Club, where he received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. He was also a member of Tigard American Legion.
   Survivors include: wife Suzanne; daughter Elizabeth Nistler of Newberg; son Douglas of Tigard; brother Herman of Hood River and granddaughter Kristina Nistler of Newberg.
   He was preceded in death by his parents.
   A service will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Lake Oswego National Guard Armory at 1915 South Shore Blvd.

Richard L. Coughanour
   Newberg resident Richard L. Coughanour died Jan. 9, 2005. He was 66.
   He was born June 17, 1938, to Ralph and Zelma in Banning, Pa. He spent much of his childhood in southwestern Pennsylvania. He attended trade school, joined the Army Reserves, moved to Snowflake, Ariz., and became a papermaker.
   He married Janice Hunt of Snowflake in August 1961. He moved to southern California to work for Garden State Paper, and in 1980 took a job working for Publishers Paper in Newberg. Except for a few years trying his hand at other ventures, he remained at the Newberg mill until he retired, as a Smurfit Newsprint employee, in early 2000.
   Known as “Coke” among friends, he remained active after retirement delivering trailers to dealerships, transferring cars for car dealers and visiting children and grandchildren throughout the West and family in Pennsylvania. He also spent as much time as he could on the Oregon coast.
   He became an active church-goer in his later years, joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in June 2001.
   Survivors include: wife Janice; parents Ralph and Zelma of Newton, Pa.; brothers, Donald of West Newton and William of Perryopolis, Pa.; sons, David of Santaquin, Utah, Eric of Richland, Wash., Neil of Post Falls, Idaho, Doug of Newberg and Brian of McMinnville; and 16 grandchildren.
   A private service was held Jan. 11. His ashes will be scattered at the Oregon coast.

Jan. 19, 2005
Joseph L. Hodapp
   Joseph L. Hodapp, who has family in the Newberg area, died Jan. 13, 2005, in Tualatin. He was 35.
   He was born Feb. 28, 1969, to Eldon and Judith (Jackson) Hodapp in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1973 he moved to Tigard, where he was raised and educated. He graduated from Tigard High School in 1987. Throughout middle and high school he worked as a landscaper for Lynn Hatch Landscaping. After high school he worked for Consolidated Freightways for seven years.
   He married Gina Collins in August 1991 in Tigard. He moved to Corona, Calif., and worked in sales for Conway Trucking. He also worked for several other trucking companies before getting into the mortgage broker business. He returned to Tigard in 2004 and worked at Home Funds Direct.
   He was an avid golfer and enjoyed being with friends and family.
   Survivors include: parents Eldon and Judy of Tigard; sister Kristi Zahm of Tigard; nephews, Ian and Cody Zahm; and wife Gina Collins of Phoenix, Ariz.
   Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors, 135 N.E. Evans St., McMinnville. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

Esther E. Ashton
   Newberg resident Esther Espo Ashton died Dec. 9, 2004, at Friendsview Manor. She was 82.
   She was born Sept. 2, 1922, in Detroit, Michigan. Her first language was Finnish, but in school she quickly picked up English. A voracious reader, family members said she could stump most anyone with her vocabulary. She maintained the Finnish language, her interest in her ancestry, as well as Finnish culture, which she passed to her sons.
   She was a business practice graduate and worked at Packard’s in the PT boat engine division during World War II. Afterwards, she worked in a rare and antique bookstore.
   In February 1947 she married Elton Ashton. At church, she taught children lessons from scripture and was a deaconess. She also taught music and art in the church school. She moved to Florida in the early 1970s and shortly thereafter her husband preceded her in death.
   She took ceramics classes, taught reading in the church school and remedial reading at the local library, as well as looking after her mother for more than 24 years.
   Survivors include: sons, Paul and David; and granddaughter Aria.
   She was buried in Lantana, Fla., beside her husband.

Frankie L. Nelson
   Longtime Newberg resident Frankie Louise Nelson died Jan. 12, 2005. She was 97.
   She was born Jan. 11, 1908, to Frank and Lula Boles in Fairview, a town that straddles the Montana-North Dakota border. She lived in North Dakota and attended school in Montana. Named after her father, she went by her middle name.
   At 19 she moved with her family to Oregon. Her family moved to Idaho, but she stayed behind to work. She married her boss’ son, Harvey Nelson, on June 8, 1930, just outside Newberg at the Chehalem Center.
   Her husband started the Nelson Brothers’ sawmill on King’s Grade with his brother. Throughout World War II her husband farmed, ran the sawmill and manned stations along the coast on the lookout for Japanese attacks. After a house fire, he built a new home on North Valley Road, where they remained.
   She was active at West Chehalem Friends church, teaching preschoolers and singing in the choir. She was known for her participation on the local elections board, and was a member of the Rural Homemakers and of local 4-H groups.
   Her husband preceded her in death in February 1994.
Burial service was Jan. 18, at Noble Cemetery. A memorial service was held that day at West Chehalem Friends Church.

Dale D. Voss
   Dale Delwyn Voss died Jan. 13, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 90.
   He was born Feb. 19, 1914, to John and Lillian (Bunse) Voss in Childs, Minn. He attended a country elementary school and graduated from Campbell High School.
   On Sept. 5, 1937, he married Alice Loeks. The moved west and settled in Newberg. They picked berries, beans, prunes, nuts and violets. He worked at Tom Laird Dairy in Dundee and Miller Paint in Portland.
   During World War II he constructed buildings that held munitions in eastern Oregon and the dormitories at Camp Adair near Corvallis. He also worked a the shipyards in Portland, then went into private business in Newberg. He also owned the Newberg Supply and Rental business and was supervisor of the maintenance department at A-dec Inc.
   He enjoyed wood working, including making toys for the Newberg Fire Department’s Toy-n-Joy program.
He bowled, belonged to the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Elks Lodge and had recently joined the Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg.
   Survivors include: wife Alice; son Byron of Newberg; daughter Cheryl Gaibler of Newberg; brother Vernon of Eureka, Calif.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by three brothers.
   A funeral service was held Jan. 17, 2005, at Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg with Pastor Steve Estrem officiating. Committal Service followed at Valley View Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Newberg.

Nina L. Adamson
   A music teacher with many pupils from the Newberg area, Nina Lorraine Adamson died Jan. 7, 2005, at her home in Sheridan. She was 91.
   She was born April 6, 1913, to Roy and Lorraine (Sheldon) Kingsriter in Spokane. She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and moved to Astoria with her father in 1932. She met Maurice Adamson at First Christian Church; they were married Sept. 2, 1938, in Corvallis.
   She attended Oregon State College (now Oregon State University) on a music scholarship and, after college, moved to Portland. She started a music studio in her home and taught many students. She was also an organist at Mikeworth’s Peninsula Funeral Home in North Portland.
   She played for many organizations and events, including area churches, the Rose Festival and Elks Minstrel Shows at the Oriental Theater in Portland.
   She and her husband in 1958 purchased the Sheridan Funeral Home, where she also played organ. She resumed teaching music in Sheridan and continued teaching until she was 87.
   Survivors include: daughter Diane Bigbee of Milwaukie; son Val Adamson of Sheridan; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Ross D. Swanson
    Ross David Swanson died Dec. 31, 2004, at his Sherwood home. He was 22.
   He was born Sept. 21, 1982, to Robert and Dee (Donaldson) Swanson in Glendale, Calif. He moved with his family to Sherwood and attended Tualatin schools and graduated from Tualatin High School in 1999.
He enjoyed bodybuilding and was interested in physical fitness.
   Survivors include: mother Dee of Sherwood; brother Robert of Tualatin; uncle J.D. Donaldson of Tacoma; aunt Gina Gonzales of Delaware; and grandfather Jim Donaldson of Tyler, Texas.

Patrick M. Lee
   Patrick Miles Lee of Dundee died on Dec. 28, 2004, at a Portland hospital. He was 54.
   He was born April 14, 1950, in Santa Rosa, Calif. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1969 and worked as a truck driver since his discharge from the service in 1971. He married Wilma Lambert in February 1988.
   Survivors include: wife Wilma; sister Janie of Dundee; daughters, Jennifer of Washington and Brandy and Heather, both of Newberg; son Donald of Newberg; stepdaughter Donna Wright of Willamina; stepson Tex Wright of Dundee; and seven grandchildren.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 8 at the VFW hall in Willamina.

Isabelle R. Busch
   Isabelle R. Busch of Dundee was stillborn on Dec. 29, 2004.
   Survivors include: parents Jason and Jennifer Busch of Dundee; brother James of Dundee; sister Aurora of Dundee; grandparents, Hollis and Kim Adams of Newberg and Eugene and Darlene Busch of Hillsboro; great-grandparents, Virginia Denton of Newberg and Christine Busch of Hillsboro.

John L. Moore
   John Leland “Lee” Moore of Sherwood died Dec. 26, 2004, at an assisted living facility. He was 89.
   He was born March 29, 1915, in Tigard to Oscar and Ada (Compton) Moore. He grew up and attended school in Tigard, graduating from Tigard High School. After attending one year of school at Linfield College he joined his father in the trucking business, Tigard Sherwood Truck Service. In June 1941 he married Blanche Finegan in Cornelius; the couple made their home in Sherwood. He eventually assumed ownership of the trucking company. His wife preceded him in death in December 1995.
   He was an original member of the Sherwood United Methodist Church, as well as the church choir, and held leadership positions. He was also a charter member of the original Sherwood Kiwanis Club and served on the Sherwood City Council. He enjoyed traveling and reading.
   Survivors include: daughters LeeAnn Parry of Fresno, Calif., and Joyce Marshall of Germany; brothers, Robert of King City, Gordon of Tigard and Donald of Mill City; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services were held Dec. 31, 2004, at Sherwood United Methodist Church with Pastor Gerry Hill officiating. Committal followed at Crescent Grove Cemetery in Tigard.

Roy L. Allen Jr.
   Roy Lee Allen Jr. of McMinnville died Dec. 12, 2004. He was 64.
   He was born Aug. 3, 1940, to Roy Sr. and Theresa (Adams) Allen in Fonda, Iowa. He served in the Army. He married Helen Louise in May 1960. He was last employed at Columbia Aluminum in Goldendale, Wash.
   Survivors include: sons, Carrey of Middleburg, Fla., Roy of Toppenish, Wash., and Mark of Florida; daughters, Stephanie Reddick of Lake City, Fla., and Tammy Clark of McMinnville; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and brother Carrey.
   A private family gathering was held. Disposition was by cremation.

Kyla R. Gardner
   Kyla Renae Gardner died from complications of premature birth on Dec. 9, 2004, at Oregon Health and Sciences University Hospital.
   Survivors include: parents, Jason and Krista Gardner of Newberg; grandparents, John and Debbie Phipps and Dan and Laurie Gardner, all of Newberg; uncles Nick Phipps and Nick Gardner, both of Newberg.
Disposition was by cremation.

Lori A. Cowan
   Lori Anne Cowan of Newberg died of cancer Dec. 23, 2004, at a Portland hospital. She was 47.
   She was born Aug. 19, 1957, to Gene and Janice (Ernst) Cowan in Seattle. She moved with her family to Beaverton, where she attended Beaverton schools. The family moved to Newberg and she graduated from Newberg High School in 1975. She attended Linfield College, graduating in 1979, then attended Concordia College for two years and received a masters degree in teaching and a minor in church education and Spanish. For the past two years she substitute taught in the Yamhill County schools.
   She attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sherwood with her son, Jake. She also volunteered in the Boy Scouts of America organization and enjoyed renovating houses, gardening and animals, especially dogs, cats and fish.
   Survivors include: son Jake of Newberg; father Gene of Newberg; brother Mark of Salem; and sister Jana of New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her mother, Janice.
   Memorial services are private at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Vern Sandersfeld officiating.

Patrick R. Kibler
   Patrick Robert Kibler died Dec. 22, 2004, following an automobile accident. He was 21.
   He was born Feb. 3, 1983, to John and Vickie Kibler. He was raised in Anchorage, Alaska, before he and his family moved to the Portland area in 1995. He was home-schooled through the seventh-grade and graduated from Westside Christian High School in 2001.  He will be recognized as a part of the senior class at George Fox University in 2005.
   A Christian, his family said he was devoted to a strong relationship with Jesus, his family and being a good role model for his brothers. He enjoyed playing basketball with his brothers.
   As a senior majoring in business management at George Fox, he also had a passion for marketing and biography, family members said. He enjoyed traveling, movies, music, photography, extreme sports and personal fitness. He held jobs as a personal trainer and a clothing model for Abercrombie and Fitch.
   Survivors include: parents John and Vickie Kibler of Lake Oswego; brothers, Kevin and Scott of Lake Oswego; grandparents Betty and Bob Cunningham; aunt Darlene Bowen; and cousins, Brandon and Dusty Bowen.
   A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Bauman Auditorium at George Fox University. Lunch and fellowship will follow at the George Fox cafeteria.
   Chapel viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 N. Villa Road. Please wear purple or yellow to the service, as these were his favorite colors.

Olga E. Ringe
   Dundee native and resident Olga Eudella Ringe died Dec. 22, 2004, in Newberg. She was 88.
   She was born May 13, 1916, to Aca Ryan and Lela Fleming in Dundee. She worked as a homemaker. She married Milton Ringe on Nov. 30, 1938. He preceded her in death in April 1988.
   She enjoyed gardening and sharing that hobby with others.
   Survivors include: sons, Milton Jr. of Portland and James of Salem; daughters, Vicki Ringe of New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, and Valorie Craven of Longview, Wash.; brother Robert Ryan of Portland; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by parents Aca and Lela; husband Milton; sister Florence James; brothers, Floyd Ryan and Marvin King.
   The family will hold a private gathering. Disposition was by cremation.

Albert L. Krause
   Former Newberg resident Albert L. Krause died Dec. 24, 2004, at his home in Portland. He was 94.
   He was born June 19, 1910, to Ludwig and Louise (Yanke) Krause on a farmstead south of Bentley, N.D., where he spent his childhood. He received his education from a nearby rural grade school. On Nov. 28, 1937, he married Laura Stevahn in Bentley. He spent most of his life farming on a farm in North Dakota, with the exception of two short residences in California in 1939 and in Newberg in 1946. When he retired in 1980, he moved to New Leipzig, N.D., where he was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. For health reasons, in 1999 he relocated to Portland.
   His family said he was a devoted husband and father.
   Survivors include: wife Laura of Portland; sons, Delbert of Bismarck, N.D., and Myron of Fairview; daughters, Carol Krause of Centerville, Ohio, and Vera Foss of Portland; sister Emma Anstrom of Bismarck, N.D.; and three grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
   A funeral service was held Dec. 28 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tim Mayne officiating. Committal followed at Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Leroy L. Neifert
  Leroy Lindell Neifert died Dec. 18, 2004, at Friendsview Manor in Newberg. He was 85.
   He was born Feb. 12, 1919, to Frank and Anna (Stacken) Neifert in Bloomfield, Neb. He grew up in Plainview, Neb., and graduated from Plainview High School. He married Elva McCardell in March 1940. She preceded him in death December 1999. They made their home in Roseville, Calif., where he worked for the railroad before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. They moved to Newberg in 1946. He pastored several Friends churches in the Northwest. He continued active in ministry at Friendsview Manor for 20 years after retirement.
   He also worked many years as a rural letter carrier, holding the positions of treasurer of Washington State and chaplain for rural carriers.
   Survivors include: daughters, Patricia Lightfoot of Newberg and Ruth Bond of Springfield; son Charles of Kansas; sister Carriee Curchett of California; brother David of California; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
   A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 29 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road.

Hazel G. Newton
   Hazel Gretchen Newton died Dec. 21, 2004, at a Newberg care facility. She was 100.
   She was born July 15, 1904, to Willit and Mary Alice (Ginther) Newton in Johnson Mill. She attended Coquille High School before graduating from Arago High School. She also attended Northwest Nazarene College.
   She was an ordained minister in the Church of the Nazarene and served as a minister and director of Christian education. She enjoyed working with children and young adults and was often called to direct children’s camps and vacation Bible schools.
   She spent many years as a homemaker and, later in life, as a care-giver for her older sisters, and eventually her younger sister. After the death of her older sisters, she moved to Salem and later to Newberg.
   Survivors include: five brothers; seven sisters; and nieces, Beverly Chance and Helen Schroeder, both of Newberg.
   A graveside service with interment will be held at 2 p.m. De c. 28 at Norway Cemetery in Norway, Ore.

Beryl M. Clark
   Beryl M. Clark died Dec. 17, 2004, at Chehalem Care Facility in Newberg. She was 86.
   She was born Feb. 7, 1918, in Tygh Valley to Joseph and Josephine (Hibbard) Landauer. She was raised in Newberg and graduated from Newberg High School. She married Pasquale “Pat” Paolo in August 1940 in Newberg and lived in Yamhill until 1970. He preceded her in death in 1968. She married Norris Clark in October 1971 in Yamhill and moved to Newberg. He preceded her in death in 2001. She lived at Chehalem Care Center since 1999.
   She was employed in the parts department at Montgomery Ward in McMinnville in the late-1960s. She then worked as a bookkeeper for Northwest Trailer Parts (now NTP) from 1970 to her retirement in 1980.
   She enjoyed traveling, the outdoors, fishing, dancing and gardening. She was a member of St. Johns Catholic Church in Yamhill, Order of the Eastern Star and Order of the Amaranth. She was a former officer in the Yamhill PTA and a former member of Young Mothers Club in Yamhill. She was selected queen of the Chehalem Care Center in 2001 and rode in the Newberg Old Fashioned Festival that year.
   Survivors include: sons, Bill and Murray Paolo, both of Yamhill; daughters, Paula McNeil of Beaverton and Diane McKeel of Gresham; stepdaughters, Linda Brandt and Kaye Knottingham, both of Newberg, Margie Fox of Pioche, Nevada, and Becky Hogenkamp of Maupin; stepson Richard Clark of Amity; brother Phillip Landauer of McMinnville; sister Wanda Paulson of Seattle; 35 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
   Viewing will be at the Chapel of Macy and Son in McMinnville from noon to 7 p.m. today (Wednesday). Rosary services will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Peters Catholic Church in Newberg. Interment will be at St. James Catholic Cemetery in McMinnville.

Orville W. Galloway
  Orville W. Galloway died Dec. 11, 2004, at his Newberg home. He was 96.
   He was born Nov. 2, 1908, to Charles and Myrtle (Ewing) Wiley in Thygh Hill, Alberta, Canada. He grew up and went to school at Kirk Caldy, Alberta, Canada. On April 5, 1947, he married Lorna Nelson in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, where they made their home. The couple moved to Montana. He did custom harvesting in the central states. In 1950 they relocated to Vancouver, Wash., and then they moved to Madras, where they owned and operated a motel for four years. In 1954 they moved to Newberg, where they have since resided. He drove trucks for Schetky Heavy Equipment Company, retiring 30 years ago.
   After retirement he cared for their rental properties. He tended a rose garden. He enjoyed going out to eat, visiting friends, and was always helping someone to repair their truck or car. A life member of the Elks Club, he went on many camping trips and loved to travel, visiting England, Scotland, Mexico, Canada, and many of the 50 states including Hawaii and Alaska.
   Survivors include: wife Lorna of Newberg; son Don of Newberg; grandson Don Jr. of Newberg; granddaughter Lorna of Livingston, Mont.
   A funeral service was held Dec. 17 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Chaplain William Larson officiating. Committal service followed at Valley View Memorial Park Mausoleum in Newberg.

Gladys I. Kendall
   Longtime Newberg and Dundee resident Gladys Irene Kendall died Dec. 11, 2004. She was 82.
   She was born Aug. 16, 1922, in Preston, Neb. In 1940 she married Clinton Kendall. He preceded her in death in 1995. She Lived in the Newberg and Dundee area from the late 1950s to 1999, when she moved to the Portland area. She was a weigh master for paving and road construction and a homemaker.
  She enjoyed playing Bunko, card games, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.
   Survivors include: daughters, Lilly Morris of Dundee, Jeanette Rowen of Clackamas and Lorie Lungden of Yamhill; brothers, Church Jackson of Newberg, James Jackson of Glide, and John Jackson of Sun Valley, Nev.; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild.

Durward W. Davis
   Durward Walter Davis died Dec. 13, 2004, at a McMinnville care facility. He was 96.
   He was born Nov. 11, 1908, to Walter and Bertha (Minks) Davis in Cherokee, Okla. His mother died in 1910, and he was left to his grandparents. He completed the eighth grade in Cherokee. On Oct. 19, 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in World War II. On Aug. 1, 1951, he was honorably discharged. Shortly after he married Virginia Tudenkian in Orange, Calif. After several years they moved to Dayton.
   He enjoyed music and woodworking. He was involved with Boy Scouts and designed several of their patches.
   Survivors include: daughters, Bonnie Harwood of Tucson, Ariz.; Cherie Rose of Sheridan; Dana Minkler of Portland; son Samuel of Anchorage, Ala.; four step-children; brother Marvin of Salmon, Idaho; sister Ruby Goodson of Idaho; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by wife Virginia.

Victor F.Thumberg
   Newberg native Victor Fred Thumberg died Dec. 9, 2004, at his home in Carlton. He was 92.
   He was born March 8, 1912, to Fred and Jennie (Olson) Thumberg in Newberg. He attended Ewing Young Elementary and graduated from Newberg High School. He drove truck for Newberg Creamery for several years.
   He married Viola Shafer in McMinnville. He bought Cherry Lane Cottage Cheese. They later moved to Carlton, where they raised cattle and grain. His wife preceded him in death on Aug. 11, 1996.
   He was a member of the West Chehalem Friends Church, where he sang in the choir and taught Sunday school classes. He loved to hunt and fish and supported the Yamhill-Carlton basketball and baseball teams.
   Survivors include: daughter Lila Bassindale of Aurora; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
   A service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at West Chehalem Friends Church.

Renford C. Gallier
   Renford C. Gallier of Sherwood died Dec. 8, 2004, at a Tualatin hospital. He was 86.
   He was born April 15, 1918, to Jacob and Roxie (Mitchel) Gallier in Fannett, Texas, where he grew up and received his education. On Dec. 14, 1943, he married Lillian Tepera in St. Monica Church in Cameron, Texas. They made their home in Maysfield, Texas. In 1956 they relocated to Oregon, where he worked in Madras as a mechanic at the Main Street Chevrolet Garage for 30 years, retiring in 1985.
   Upon his retirement the couple moved to Sherwood, where they have since resided.
   He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and woodworking, where he built squirrel feeders.
   Survivors include: wife Lillian of Sherwood; daughter Loretta Hoehna of Tigard; sons, Renford of Tacoma and Lawrence of Des Moines, Wash.; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild and two nephews.
   He was preceded in death by brother Lawrence and sister Selia.
   A funeral service was held Dec. 11 at Attrell’s Sherwood Funeral Chapel with Father Tom McCarthy officiating. Private committal was at St. Lukes Cemetery in Woodburn.

Richard W. Gormand
   Former Newberg resident Richard William Gormand Jr. died Dec. 7, 2004, at Salem Hospital. He was 68.
   He was born Nov. 11, 1936, to Richard and Sarah (DeGrasse) Gormand in Philadelphia, Penn. He grew up and went to school in Jersey, Penn., and later moved to California with family. He joined the U.S. Army in April 1954 in Los Angeles and served during the Korean War. On April 25, 1962, he was honorably discharged at Fort Lewis, Wash.
   On Feb. 20, 1971, he married Kathleen Burke in California. They made their home in Torrance and Oceanside, Calif. In August 1976 they moved to Newberg, and in September 2004 they moved to Salem.
   He was employed at Excellon, OECO in Portland, and then A-dec. He was an artist and loved to draw, paint and travel. He also enjoyed breeding Dalmatians, Tropical Fish and playing chess.
   Survivors include: wife Kathleen of Salem; sons, Thomas Gormand and Michael Burke, both of Newberg; daughters, Windy Gormand of Dundee and Roberta Rinkes of Newberg; brother William of Hemet, Calif.; grandchildren, Hannah Gormand, Isaiah, Jasmine, Roxanne, and Samantha Rinkes and Alexis, Nathan and Haylie Burke; and great-grandsons, Micah and Aidan Rinkes.
   He was preceded in death by sister Margaret and grandson Samuel Gormand.
   A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 16 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road.

Kenneth I. Weatherly
   Newberg resident Kenneth Irvin Weatherly died Dec. 4, 2004, in a Portland hospital. He was 77.
   He was born April 2, 1927, to Walter and Dula (Cook) Weatherly in Newberg. He graduated from Newberg High School. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1945 to November 1946. He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from December 1950 to December 1953. He worked with his father in a trucking business and drove for Publishers Paper and Smurfit for more than 30 years. On June 10, 1961, he married Mildred Brentano.
   He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping. He raised hound dogs and enjoyed spending time with family.
   Survivors include: wife Mildred of Newberg; son Charles of Newberg; daughters, Kelly Ernst of Newberg, Kay Kerr of Salem, Tracy Kruse of Newberg; sisters, Alice Kersey, Elsie Gray, and Carol Long, all of McMinnville; grandchildren, Christopher and Kevin Ernst, Samuel and Alexa Kerr, Nathaniel and Aaron Weatherly, and Kyle and Kadeen Kruse.
   Services were held Dec. 10 at St.Peter Catholic Church.

Emma M. Hamner
   Longtime Newberg resdient Emma Mae Hamner died Dec. 7, 2004, in Condon. She was 88.
   She was born Sept. 28, 1916, to Ulwin and Ada (Dozier) Denyer in Portland. She grew up on the family farm near Turner except for the few years in the mid-1920s when the family lived on “peanut hill” in Cashmere, Wash. In 1934 she graduated from Turner High School, where she had played on the girl’s basketball team. She majored in home economics and education at Oregon State College (now Oregon State University), graduating with honors in 1938. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and other national scholastic honoraries.
   She met her husband, Leonard Allen Hamner, at OSU when they lived in the same boarding house. She and her brother, Jim, lived in the attic and Leonard in the basement. They married Nov. 24, 1938. She worked at OSU for two years following her marriage.
   In 1941 she and her husband purchased Graham Drug Store in Newberg. The store soon became Hamner Drug, and was sold in 1968. Her husband preceded her in death in 1981.
   She volunteered in many organizations during the more than 63 years she resided in Newberg. She was a Cub Scout den mother and a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader. She was active in the PTA and in the Central School carnivals. She served as mother advisor for the international Order of Rainbow Girls, Newberg Assembly No. 2. She was an active volunteer at the Newberg Public Library and a member of the Library’s Friends organization, as well as the American Association of University Women and the Republican Women’s group. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star as a committee member and an officer, serving twice as Worthy Matron for Newberg Chapter No. 55. In addition, she served at the state level as the Grand Representative to New Mexico. She was active in other Masonic organizations, including Amaranth. She was a past president of Chapter L of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Newberg.
   Survivors include: son Louis of Condon; daughter Lois Holmes of Redmond; granddaughters, Annette Martinez and Kimberly Ositis; great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Hannah Martinez and Nicholas and Natalie Ositis; five nieces and one nephew.
   She was preceded in death by brothers, James and Russell Denyer.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 18 at First United Methodist Church in Newberg. Committal is private at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Glenna M. Jansen
   Glenna May Jansen died Dec. 7, 2004, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 73.
   She was born July 9, 1931, to Cecyl and Julia (Tinsley) Muhr Reddington, Neb. She grew up and received her early education in Harrisburg, Neb., and graduated from high school. She attended University of California-Los Angeles, where she earned a teaching degree. On June 7, 1958, she married William Jansen in Culver City, Calif. They moved to Newberg in 1972. She worked for Allen Fruit for a few years. In 1975 she worked at George Fox College (now George Fox University) and was the president’s secretary until she retired in 1996. She was called back to help on a part time basis on several occasions.
   She and her husband enjoyed traveling. He preceded her in death on April 20, 1997.
   She was an active member of West Chehalem Friends Church. She sang in the church choir and with the Sweet Adelines. Her interests included crafts; painting, especially tole painting; gardening; farming; and her animals. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
   Survivors include: sons, Ron and Rayle Jansen, both of Newberg; daughter Raelyne Jansen of Portland; brothers, Doyle Muhr of Portland, Leon Muhr of Manning, Gary Muhr of Dayton, and Larry Muhr of Nebraska; sisters, Darleen Gibbs and Bonnie Libby, both of Newberg; grandchildren, Keven, Krista and Kyle Jansen, and Lindsey Darrow; and great-grandchildren, Trevor Keely, Tulip May Darrow and Alivia Jansen.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Raymond, Marvin and Howard; and sister Lois.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at West Chehalem Friends Church in Newberg with Pastor Paul Almquist officiating. Committal is private at Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Francis “Fanny” Kilgore
   Francis “Fanny” Kilgore of Dayton died Nov. 30, 2004, at the Willamette Valley Medical Center. He was 90.
   He was born May 14, 1914, to Elzie and Ina (Glover) Kilgore in Whiteson. He attended Unity Grade School and graduated from Dayton High School in 1935. He worked on the family farm before going to work at Alderman Farms. He later worked for Crabtree Rock Quarry, retiring in 1997. He was a member of the Dayton Fire Department from 1940 to the late 1970s.
   He married Lucille Senn on June 4, 1937, in Kelso, Wash. She preceded him in death in 1988.
   He enjoyed gardening, hunting, dump trucks, football and spending time with family. He also enjoyed going to the coast, attending the Steam-Up Days in Brooks.
   Survivors include: Catherine Laster of Dayton, Ruth Kilgore of Newberg and Charlotte Parker of Elmira; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
   A service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Dayton Baptist Church. Internment will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park Mausoleum in McMinnville.

Daniel L. Doan
   Former Newberg resident Daniel Lee Doan died Nov. 23, 2004, at his home in Langlois. He was 62.
   He was born Oct. 2, 1942, to Johnnie and Sophie Doan in The Dalles. He spent his high school years in Billings, Mont., where he participated on the football, basketball and track and field teams. He moved to the Portland area, where he joined the U.S. Marines; he served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. He served under Lt. Oliver North and was awarded two Purple Hearts.
   Following the war he moved to Newberg, where he worked in the logging industry for several years. He worked in various aspects of construction until his retirement in May 2003. He lived several years in Sacramento before settling in Langlois.
   He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing.
   Survivors include: wife Cheryl of Langlois; daughters, Denise Josephson of Fair Oaks, Calif., Jaimi Doan of Davis, Calif., and Lesli Doan of Phoenix, Ariz.; mother Sophie Tunley of Longview, Wash.; brother Dennis of Aloha; granddaughters, Rebecca, Kayla and Amanda Josephson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
No formal service will be held per his request.
    Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Catherine L. Wiley

   Former Newberg resident Catherine L. Wiley died Nov. 25, 2004, at her home in McMinnville. She was 87.
   She was born July 28, 1917, to Carlos and Gertrude Wymore in Buxton. As her father was a logger, she was raised and educated throughout Oregon. She married John Patten on Dec. 13, 1936, in Oregon. He preceded her in death in 1963. She lived in Woodburn, Portland and settled in Newberg in 1951. She married Worth Wiley on June 25, 1965, in Reno. She moved to Grand Island, where she stayed on a farm until moving to McMinnville in the mid-1980s. Her second husband preceded her in death in 1993.
   She was a member of the Flying Farmers, the World War I American Legion Auxiliary and the McMinnville Garden Club. She enjoyed needle work, gardening and crocheting.
   Survivors include: daughters, Darlene Livengood of Henderson, Nev., and Barbara Bjorklund of Gladstone; stepdaughters, Mary Hein of Portland and Vernetta Worthington of Sebastopol, Calif.; son Ronald Patten of Oakton, Va.; stepson Donald Wiley of Dayton; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
   She was preceded in death by brothers Carlos and Walter Wymore.
   Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans St., McMinnville. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Willamette Valley Cancer Society in care of Macy and Son.

Lovena A. Arana
   Newberg resident Lovena Ann Arana died Nov. 11, 2004, at Newberg Care Home. She was 65.
   She was born Nov. 17, 1939, to Luther and Lovena (Turner) Templeton in Buckeye, Ariz. Her family moved around the west following her father’s job. They settled in California in the early 1950s. She attended both Santa Rosa High School and Santa Rosa Junior College. She married Perry Arana on Sept. 5, 1957. They made their home in California. In 1961 they moved to Vashon Island, Wash., and later lived in Illwaco, Wash. They moved again in 1973 to Newberg, where they have resided since. The couple divorced in 1996 but remained friends.
   In addition to her role as a homemaker, she worked in real estate and publishing. For several years she owned and managed an auto body repair shop in Newberg. She enjoyed horses and in later years owned a horse ranch.  She also enjoyed camping, baking, reading, sewing, cooking and spending time with family.
   Survivors include: sons, Ron and Perry, both of St Louis; daughters, Lovena Standridge of Newberg and Meghan Arana of Wilsonville; brothers, Douglas Templeton of Newberg and Walter Templeton of Boise, Idaho; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, son Mike, and grandson Cody Arana.
   A celebration of life will be held in the spring.

Gaylee W. Veatch
   Gaylee Wasco Veatch died Nov. 15, 2004. She was 57.
   She was born March 30, 1947, to James and Thelma (Morgan) Wasco in Portland. She grew up on Rex Hill in Newberg. She graduated from Newberg High School in 1965 and from Linfield College in 1969. She married Roger Veatch on Dec. 30, 1967, at Newberg First Presbyterian Church. She returned to school to become a paralegal and worked for the Beaverton Municipal Court and several Portland-area law firms.
   She enjoyed the Oregon Coast, skiing and travel. She cherished her family.
   Survivors include: son Brett of Newberg; grandson Spencer; sister Carol Fisher and other family.
   Contributions in her memory may be made to the Oregon Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Peggy M. Drummond
   Lifetime Sherwood and Newberg area resident Peggy May Drummond died Nov. 27, 2004, at her Sherwood home. She was 83.
   She was born Aug. 23, 1921, to William and Molly (Pierce) Simmons in Portland, where grew up and received her early education. On July 4, 1941, she married Lorn Drummond in Sherwood. For nearly 40 years the couple operated Sherwood Dry Cleaners. Her husband preceded her in death in 1991.
   In retirement she was a volunteer at the Sherwood library and in the Sherwood schools, where she tutored students with reading difficulties. She enjoyed travel, gardening and friends.
   Survivors include: daughters, Roberta Staebler of McMinnville and Shannon Drummond of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; sons, David of Portland and Michael of Sherwood; brother William Simmons of Gladstone; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by son Timothy.
   A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood with Father Tom McCarthy officiating. Committal is private.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent’s Hospice in care of Attrell’s Sherwood Funeral Chapel, 280 N.W. First St., Sherwood, OR 97140.

Martin Bliefernich
   Former Newberg resident Martin Bliefernich died of natural causes on Nov. 28, 2004, at his daughter’s home. He was 72.
   He was born Sept. 7, 1932, to Martin Bliefernich and Louise Jones-Durfy in Boise. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1951. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Oregon. He owned Mr. B’s Dry Cleaner and Act 1 Laundry in Newberg. He lived in Portland in retirement.
   He was a member of multiple groups (and an officer in many), including Rotary, Elks, VFW, Jaycees, Barian Association and the Columbia Willamette Faceters Guild, as well as St. Michael Episcopal Church in Newberg. He was a faceter and gem design artist. He played in the Willamette Salem Symphony. He was an actor/singer for the Old Fashioned Festival in Newberg, and a member of the Gallery Players.
   Survivors include: daughter Rebecca of Portland; sons, Gary of Portland, Matthew of Aloha and Ronald of Virginia; and brother Wallace of Texas.
   He was preceded in death by his parents.
A private burial will be held at Valley View Cemetery in Newberg.
