Miles
S. Jones
Miles Shadrick Jones died in his Sherwood home June 24, 2006. He
was 94.
He was born Dec. 30, 1911, in Shedd to Charles and Zula (Faulk)
Jones. He grew up in Hanland and Cromwell, and graduated from high
school in Eddyville.
He married Charlene Walker on Sept. 25, 1938, in Hillsboro. The
couple lived in several western states before settling in Sherwood
in 1952.
He worked for the city of Portland Water Bureau for 22 years and
was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newberg and the
Fernwood Grange. He was also an Explorer Scout master and led
several treks.
Survivors include: wife Charlene of Sherwood; sons, Kenneth of
Sherwood and Miles of Newberg; daughter Zula of Sherwood; brother
Marshall of Corvallis; sister Minerva Taylor of Wilsonville; eight
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Calvert.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. June 29, 2006, in
Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, followed by a committal at Valley
View Memorial Park. Viewing and visitation are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
today (Wednesday) and 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at
Attrell’s.

Charles E.
Freeman
Charles Edwin “Chuck” Freeman died of cancer on Tuesday, June 20,
2006 at his Dundee home. He was 56.
He was born Nov. 1, 1949, to Charles August and Myrtle (Stokes)
Freeman in Vancouver, Wash. He graduated from Cleveland High School
in 1968 and attended Portland State University.
He served in the Army National Guard from 1971 to 1977, and worked
for the Union Pacific Railroad for 35 years as a yard master and
conductor.
He married Judy Towers in 1972 at the Newberg Christian Church, and
the couple made their home in Newberg. They moved to Dundee four
years ago.
He enjoyed golf, hunting, camping, bowling, softball and baseball.
He was a member of his high school and college baseball teams, and
in later years coached Little League, Babe Ruth and American Legion
teams for the Chehalem Park and Recreation District in Newberg.
Survivors include: his wife Judy; son Christopher Freeman of
Tigard; daughter Kathryn Tribbey of Portland; stepfather James
Freidel of Carver, Oregon; brother Daniel Freeman of Fullerton,
Calif.; and sisters Shirley Youngblood of Portland and Mary Ludhal
of Carver.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at
Newberg Christian Church, 2315 Villa Road. Memorial contributions
may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the American

Kenneth
M. Williams
Kenneth Morgan Williams of Newberg died Tuesday, June 20, 2006. He
was 86.
He was born Feb. 9, 1920, to Floyd and Bernice Williams in
Caldwell, Idaho.
He graduated from Linfield College in 1943 with a bachelor’s degree
in education, and later received his master’s in counseling from the
University of Oregon.
He married Edna Rose Lehman in 1941.
Williams taught at Portland Christian High School and in Scotts
Mills, Newberg and Sherwood. He also served as dean of Pacific
College (now George Fox University) from 1955 until 1963.
He was a life-long member of the Friends Church, where he served in
leadership roles, including as pastor of Sherwood Friends Church
from 1945 to 1950, and was a founding member (with his wife Edna) of
the Newberg Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast Committee. He remained involved
in the committee until 2006.
After his retirement in 1982 he continued to work as a substitute
teacher in Yamhill County until 2004. For many years he also served
as a counselor and teacher at Rockaway Friends Summer Camp.
Survivors include: his wife Edna; son Daryl, five
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Margaret-Rose Macy in
1988.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. June 29 at the Newberg
Friends Church.

Cilenti
Diane Louise Cilenti of Sheridan died June 11, 2006, in Chemult.
She was 56.
She was born Dec. 23, 1949, in Salem to Gene and Helen Austin. She
was employed as a veteran service officer by Yamhill County. She
married Thomas Cilenti in 1978.
She served as the treasurer of the Grand Ronde Veterans Honor Guard
and Native American Veterans Association chapter, and was a
contributor to the Ad Hoc Committee of the West Valley Veterans
Memorial in Grand Ronde.
Survivors include: husband Thomas of Sheridan; sons, William
Thrasher and Robert Cilenti of Gladstone and Frank Thrasher of
Dundee; daughters, Amber Borges-Silva of Canby and Jenifer
Leavenworth of Portland; brothers, Philip Austin of Salem and Eric
Austin of Vancouver, Wash.; sister Sharon Carr of Silver Springs,
Md.; parents Gene and Helen of Salem; and five grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today (Saturday) at the
Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde gymnasium.
Milford
H. Pekarek
Milford Henry Pekarek died June 12, 2006, at his Newberg home. He
was 72.
He was born April 19, 1934, in Newberg to Frank and Margaret
(Payne) Pekarek. He attended Portland Adventist Academy and worked
at Augdon’s Farm in Aurora.
He married Frances Annette Gray in April 1954. He went into
business as a logger, first independently and later with Clay Brown
Logging and Darryl Paulson. He divorced his wife in 1969.
He enjoyed cutting wood and working with his sons and grandsons. He
also enjoyed fishing and moose hunting in Canada, and took working
vacations to Hawaii, where he sold fireworks during the
Christmas/Chinese New Year season.
Survivors include: his companion Billie Kelly of Newberg; sons
Rodney and Milford of Newberg and Timothy Pekarek of Dayton; seven
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers Leonard, Roland and Frank.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Newberg
Seventh-day Adventist Church. Committal is private at Newberg
Friends Cemetery.

James F. C.
Coleman
James Frederick Clancy Coleman died June 1, 2006. He was 85.
He was born May 2, 1921, in Newberg to Curtis and Irene (Gearin)
Coleman and graduated from Newberg High School in 1940. He attended
the University of Oregon, where he played football and majored in
pre-law.
In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and became a member of the
82nd Airborne Division, 505th Regiment. On D-Day, his division
parachuted behind enemy lines and captured the town of Ste Mere
Elise in France, halting the advance of the German army.
During the course of World War II, he saw action throughout Europe,
making more than 30 parachute jumps. He was awarded the Bronze Star,
Silver Star, the Soldier’s Medal and the Purple Heart for his
battlefield achievements.
He left the Army as a major in 1946, returning to St. Paul. In 1950
he married Helen Ficq of Albany, a teacher at St. Paul Union High.
He worked as an engineer for various mechanical engineering firms
in the Portland area, retiring in 1992. He visited Normandy in 1994
and 2004 for the 50th and 60th anniversary celebrations of the D-Day
invasion, and received medals of gratitude from the governments of
France, Belgium and Holland.
Survivors include: wife Helen; sister Maxine Bayer; sons Curtis,
Christopher and Clinton Coleman; daughters Katherine Sheehy,
Cornelia Coleman and Caroline Richter; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul Catholic Parish
or the St. Paul Fire Department’s new ambulance fund.
Evelyn
P. Stone
Evelyn Pearl Stone died June 1, 2006, at her Newberg home. She was
83.
She was born to Fredrick and Pearl (Rabuck) Johnson on Dec. 15,
1922, in Rockham, S.D. The family moved to Oregon when she was
young, living in Corvallis and Portland.
In 1941, she graduated from Girls Poly School in Portland. She
married Kenneth Stone on Jan. 10, 1953, in Vancouver, Wash. During
World War II she worked at Columbia Aircraft and later at Montgomery
Wards.
From 1981 to 1996, Stone lived in Prineville, where she was a member
of the VFW Auxiliary and active in many community services,
including bake sales, 4-H and blood drives. She enjoyed baking,
canning and gardening, and was a volunteer for the senior meals
program at Newberg Foursquare Church.
Survivors include: son Charles of Newberg; daughters, Sandra
Burchett of Newberg and Susan Hebert of Deer Island; sister Audrey
Dunn of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and 11 nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband Kenneth in 1991, and by her
siblings Eudora (Johnson) Call, Arvin Johnson and Arnold Winkler.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m today (Wednesday) and
9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A
memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Newberg
Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Martha
B. Hare
Martha Barbara Hare died May 30, 2006 at a Newberg care facility.
She was 86.
She was born Jan. 10, 1920, in Roberts, Idaho, to Cristoph and
Karoline (Hochhalter) Mehlhoff. Her family traveled and worked as
farmers. She married Horatio Hare of Williamsburg, Penn., on Nov.
23, 1949.
The couple moved to Newberg in 1955, where they lived together
until her husband’s death in 1985. She worked as a dental assistant
and was an avid bird watcher and fan of big band music.
Survivors include: son Walter of Clatskanie; daughter Carolyn Coon
of Dundee; brothers Lester and Walter Mehlhoff, both of Seaside; and
sister Elvina Mehlhoff of Milwaukee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Horatio, and brother
Andrew Mehlhoff.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at
Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg. Memorial contributions may be

Grace Y. Roberts
Grace Aurelia (Yoder) Roberts died June 1, 2006 at a Newberg care
facility. She was 99.
She was born to Glenn and Allee (Carpenter) Yoder in 1915 in Seesey,
Mo. As a child, her family moved to Riverside, Wash. where they
developed and operated the Yoder Dairy, which delivered milk
throughout the Okanogan Valley.
She addended the Portland Bible Institute (later Cascade College)
where she met John Roberts, who she married in 1938. The couple
settled in Pleasant Ridge, Idaho, where they operated the Greenleaf
General Store until retiring in 1983.
After moving to Newberg, Grace was an active member of the Newberg
Friends Church and a volunteer at George Fox University and
Northwest Yearly Meeting.
Survivors include: her sons Daniel Roberts of Kalama, Wash., and
Phillip Roberts of Powell Butte; daughters Joanna Kellum of Mountain
Home, Idaho, and Juanita Duncan of Newberg; sisters Irma Carpenter
of Omak, Wash., and Ena Barnes of Stanwood, Wash.; brother Joe Yoder
of Tigard, ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband John on May 16, 2006;
brothers Carl and Von Yoder; and grandson Travis Eoff.
Her memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. June 10 at Newberg
Friends Church. There will also be a memorial service at Greenleaf
Friends Church in Greenleaf, Idaho at 2 p.m. on June 17. Memorial

Robert R. Dent
Former Newberg resident Robert Dent died May 26, 2006. He was 66.
He was born Dec. 4, 1939, in Portland to Paul and Rosa Mae (Tibbets)
Dent.
His father, Paul (“Dick”) Dent, ran the Newberg Scribe newspaper
from 1931 until its merger with the Newberg Graphic in 1939, and
retired as part owner in the late 1960s.
As a young man, he delivered papers for his father and attended
Newberg High School, before enrolling at Oregon State University,
where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.
He married Barbara Albertine on June 10, 1967, and worked in the
public relations department of the Trojan power plant, later
transferring to the Portland PGE office.
After his retirement in 1996, he taught science and photography at
St. Helens Junior High School. He served there as an advisor for the
school newspaper and built a weather station.
He enjoyed flying, gardening, ham radio, playing poker and bridge.
He was an assistant emergency coordinator and operations officer
for Columbia County, and a vice-president and founding father of the
Columbia Amateur Radio Association. He was also a member of Kiwanis,
and received their George F. Hixson award.
Survivors include: wife Barbara; sons, Barry and Bryan; and
grandson Austin.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:30 p.m today (Saturday) at
Christ Episcopal Church in St. Helens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Myrtle
L. Dare
Former Newberg resident Myrtle Lorraine Dare died May 25, 2006, at
her Aurora home. She was 78.
She was born April 4, 1928, to Truman and Beulah (Maserve) Keys of
Twin Falls, Idaho. She married Romeo Dare in 1951 at the Old Saints
Church in Portland. The couple made their home in Newberg for the
next 40 years.
She moved to Aurora following her husband’s death in November 1990.
She enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. She attended St. Peter
Catholic Church in Newberg.
Survivors include: son John Hill: brothers, Web and Charlie
Keys; sisters, Hazel Van Dyne and Ruby Truesdell; granddaughter
Trisha Hunley; great-grandson Spencer Hunley; and numerous nieces
and nephews.
A memorial service was held June 2 in Attrell’s Newberg Funeral
Chapel. Committal was private at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Portland.

M. Hutchens
Former Newberg resident Deloras Marion Hutchens died May 21, 2006.
She was 76.
Hutchens was born Dec. 13, 1929, in Canton, S.D. to Carl and Lucy (Wilmart)
Danielson. In 1934, she moved with her family to Portland, where she
graduated from Jefferson High School.
On April 24, 1948, she married Christopher Hutchens of Vancouver,
Wash. He preceded her in death.
She worked as a grocery clerk at Piggly Wiggly, Three Boys and
Safeway. Her hobbies included playing cards, gardening and shopping
at garage sales.
Survivors include: sons Milton of Newberg and Calvin of Lafayette;
brothers Robert Danielson of San Jose, Calif., and Richard Danielson
of Vancouver, Wash.; sisters Gloria Borchert of Tigard, Grace
Merrigan of Bend and Juanita Periera of Anchorage, Alaska; seven
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A cryptside service was held June 2 at Valley View Memorial Park in
Newberg.
Elaine
D. Holznagel
Elaine Dorothea Holznagel, who has family in Newberg, died May 28,
2006, at a care facility in Wilsonville. She was 77.
She was born Aug. 30, 1928, in Rushville, Neb., to Lloyd and Ines
(Allen) Alexander. She married Robert Holznagel on May 13, 1950 in
Vancouver, Wash., and they later moved to Hillsboro to raise a
family.
In June 1970 the couple moved to the Oregon coast, where they ran a
home business and fished commercially for salmon in Pacific City.
She enjoyed knitting, sewing, music and reading.
Survivors include: daughters Judith of Newberg and Sandra of Bonney
Lake, Wash.; sisters Marguerite Rhode of Donald and Vivian
Brooks-Clark of Portland.
She was preceded in death by her husband in May 2003 and their
infant son James in February 1953.
No formal funeral service will be held.

Dorothy M. Stevens
Former Newberg resident Dorothy Marie Stevens of McMinnville died
May 20, 2006. She was 87.
She was born Feb. 5, 1919, to Fred and Ida Robinson in Iliff, Colo.
She graduated from Carbondale High School in 1936. She moved to
Newberg in 1976.
She worked at Dip N Donuts in Newberg for many years. She enjoying
cooking and was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Survivors include: sons, Fred of Clifton, Colo., and Ervin of
Farmington, N.M.; daughters, Janet Griffith of McMinnville and Linda
Cooley and Nancy Turner of Newberg; brother Ralph Robinson of
Willamina; sisters Patsy Wilkins of Bethany, Okla., and Betty Beacco
of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren
and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by son Allen; sisters Shirley Vincent and
Virginia Banater; and brothers Don, Art, Fred and Jim Robinson.
A memorial service will be held June 23 in the Kingdom Hall of
Jehovah’s Witnesses in Clifton, Colo. Services locally are pending.

Neva R. Delker
Neva Reigle Delker died May 14, 2006, in her Newberg home. She was
97.
She was born July 18, 1908, in Kinross, Iowa, to Charles and Goldie
(Sheets) Martin.
At the age of 6 she moved with her family to Deerfield, Kan., where
she grew up and attended school. She married Russel Reigle in 1927
in Springfield, Kan., and they came to Newberg in 1935 and made
their home here. He preceded her in death in 1977.
She was a member of Newberg First Baptist Church since 1937 and was
a Sunday school teacher there. She also served on the church
missions board and was a charter member of the Newberg Christian
Women’s Club.
She worked as a bus driver and row boss for Alderman’s Farms of
Dayton and Birdseye of Hillsboro. She was a buyer and clerk for
Miller’s Mercantile in Newberg, a clerk for Renne Hardware in
Newberg, worked at Oregon Co-op and the Herring Meat Co. She retired
in 1979 from Newberg Interiors.
She married Wally Delker in January 1979 and they made their home
at the Nut Tree Mobile Court in Newberg. They traveled in their RV
to many places and spent time with her family in Kansas.
Survivors include: husband Wallace of Newberg; daughters, Ginger
Sasse of Keizer and Marilyn Jones of McMinnville; stepsons, Carl of
Seaside and Ray of Portland; stepdaughter Joyce DeGeer of Tigard;
sisters, Bonnie Jameson of Kansas and Ilene George of Louisiana; 11
grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 16
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by daughters Donna Smith and Rita Bates.

service today (Saturday) at Newberg First Baptist Church. A funeral
service will follow at the church with Pastor Frank Lednicky
officiating. A committal service will follow at Valley View Memorial
Park.

Robert
E. Williams
Robert Eugene Williams of Newberg died May 13, 2006, at Providence
Newberg Hospital. H was 45.
He was born Feb. 23, 1961, to William and Janice (Mestas) Williams
in Pico Rivera, California.
He lived in several cities in California prior to moving to Oregon.
At the age of 14 he moved to Beaverton. He attended Beaverton
schools and high school in Lake Oswego. He moved to Pomona, Calif.,
where he assisted in his grandfather’s painting business. He also
worked other jobs and in Las Vegas as a card dealer. He returned to
Newberg about 25 years ago.
He enjoyed travel, fishing, music and playing his guitar.
Survivors include: mother Janice Rothenberg of Molalla; daughter
Jessica Weidner of Newberg; brother Kevin Acup of Baker City;
sisters, Sherry Pastor of Ottumua, Iowa, and Bonnie Schwab of Canby;
two grandchildren; and 10 nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held May 17, 2006, in Attrell’s Newberg
Funeral Chapel with Father Jim Nibler officiating. Committal was
private.
Susanne
M. Myers
Susanne M. Myers of Newberg died May 10, 2006, from the effects of
a viral brain infection and subsequent heart attack. She was 65.
She was student body treasurer, cheerleader, valedictorian and had
perfect attendance and a 4.0 grade-point in the Sherwood High School
class of 1958. She was named Outstanding Woman Graduate in the
School of Business and Technology at Oregon State University class
of 1962. She was awarded membership to Phi Kappa Phi, the national
scholastic honorary.
She worked for 28 years at AT&T, US West and US West-Direct,
retiring as director in 1990.
Survivors include: husband Boyd of Newberg; daughter Becky Kinkead;
son Scott; sister Joyce Olsen; brother Art Sasaki; mother Nami
Sasaki and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at the
home of Boyd Myers, 7605 Dog Ridge Road.
Roger
D. Sackman
Roger Daniel Sackman of Wilsonville died May 13, 2006. He was 50.
He was born April 18, 1956, in Vancouver, Wash., to Jack and Lorene
Sackman. He graduated from Newberg High School, Portland Community
College and Portland State University.
He married Mee Hing Wu. He owned a landscaping business, worked at
the Stafford Ranch and was a shift supervisor at Norpac foods from
1976 to 1991. He attended Rolling Hills Community Church.
Survivors include: wife Mee Hing of Wilsonville; sons, Nicholas,
Johnny and Christopher of Wilsonville; parents Jack and Lorene; and
brothers, Paul of Portland and John of Sammamish, Wash.
A memorial service was held May 19, 2006, at Rolling Hills
Community Church. Interment was at Robert Bird Cemetery.

Lavelle
Kitchen
Lavelle Kitchen died May 14, 2006, at a Newberg care facility. He
was 99.
He was born March 27, 1907, in Harrisburg to Gilliam and Eugenia
(Bryan) Kitchen.
In early years he worked on the family farm, then went to work for
Southern Pacific Railroad. On July 13, 1934, he married Helen Cook
in Vancouver, Wash. The couple made their home in Newberg. In 1935,
he went to work for Publisher’s Paper Company in Newberg and
continued to work there for 34 years until his retirement in 1969.
His wife preceded him in death in April 1996.
He was a member of the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Posse. He enjoyed
horses, automobiles and spending time around his home.
Sole survivor is niece Joyce Addiscott of Palm Desert, Calif.
Committal service was private at Valley View Memorial Park in
Newberg.

Myrtle P. Davidson
Myrtle Pauline Davidson of Newberg died May 10, 2006, at Providence
Newberg Hospital. She was 74.
She was born July 7, 1931, to Chris and Emma (Christenson) Davidson
in Beavercreek. She moved with her family to Newberg at age 7. She
graduated from Newberg High School in 1949. She worked as a cook for
Newberg Community Hospital (now Providence Newberg Hospital) from
1958 to 1998.
She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family. She was a
volunteer for the day care and vacation Bible school programs at the
First Baptist Church.
Survivors include: nieces, Patricia Mathis of Eugene, Barbara Weeks
of McMinnville and Jan Stermon of Lebanon; nephews Ronald Friday of
Newberg, Glen Friday of Albany, John Weeks of Waldport, Robert Weeks
of Willamina, Jerry Weeks of Lafayette and Steven Davidson of Kent,
Wash.
A graveside service was held Monday at Valley View Memorial Park
Cemetery. Pastor Frank Lednicky officiated.

Douglas E. Coburn
Douglas Emery Coburn of McMinnville died May 3, 2006, at W
illamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville. He was 53.
He was born Sept. 26, 1952, to Jesse and Rosie (Comer) Coburn in
McMinnville. He was raised and educated in Newberg and has lived in
Yamhill for most of his life.
He enjoyed watching movies and restoring cars.
Survivors include: son Douglas Jr. of Newberg; daughter Jennifer
Cook of Lafayette; brother Bill of Canby; sisters, Liz Hubbard of
McMinnville and Dorothy Lunsford of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; and two
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughter Stefanie and brothers Jack and
Dan.

L. Toler
Arlene Lois Toler of Newberg died May 6, 2006, at Providence
Newberg Hospital. She was 79.
She was born Nov. 5, 1926, to Martin and Ruby (Etziviler) Hayman in
Garibaldi. As a young girl she moved to Newberg, where she was
raised and educated, graduating from Newberg High School. She
married William King in 1948 and traveled with him while he was in
the military. He preceded her in death.
She moved to Ohio, then Denver to work in Veteran’s Administration
hospitals. She returned to Newberg and married Willard Toler in Aug.
24, 1970. She worked in property management in the 1980s.
She enjoyed playing bingo and gardening.
Survivors include: son Rodney King of Portland; daughters, Elaine
Hamilton of Dundee, Kathy Gordon of Portland, Pattie DeYoung of
Ocean Park, Wash., Rita King of Nehalem and Debbie Scroggins of
Cameron, La.; sister Murel Conway of Newberg; 21 grandchildren; 42
great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her second husband, Willard Toler, and
by daughter Donna Highley.

Wilder
Ely Elwood Wilder of Lafayette died on May 6, 2003, at Providence
Newberg Hospital. He was 78.
He was born Oct. 23, 1927, in Powers to Clinton and Josephine
(Wilson) Wilder. “Doc,” as he was known, went to school in southern
Oregon and graduated from high school in Portland. He served in the
Army and received an honorable discharge. He married Emma Clark in
McMinnville on Dec. 22, 1945. He worked for the Xerox Corp. for 35
years as a service technician.
He enjoyed enameling, panning for gold and the outdoors. He was a
member of the Metzger United Methodist Church and the Northwest
Enamelist Society.
Survivors include: wife Emma of Newberg; sons, Ken of Fresno,
Calif., and Doss of Newberg; daughters, Kathy Steyaert of Seattle
and Mercedes Sweeney of Seaside; brother George of Baker City;
sister Rena Zellner of Lake Oswego; six grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; four nieces and one nephew.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at
Metzger United Methodist Church in Portland with Pastor Robin Yim
officiating. Committal is private at Gibbs Cemetery in Sherwood.

Seidel
Mary Esther Seidel of Newberg died on April 22, 2006. She was 86.
She was born March 26, 1920, to Scott and Elsie (Coppock) Clark in
Haviland, Kan. She attended primary and secondary school in Haviland.
She graduated from Friends Bible College in Haviland in 1939, and
Pacific College (now George Fox University) in 1949 with a
bachelor’s degree.
She married Heinrich Seidel, who she met in college, on July 16,
1950, in Wichita, Kan. The couple made their home in Idaho for many
years. The couple retired in Newberg, where she volunteered at the
local thrift store and at Friendsview Manor, where she moved when
her husband preceded her in death in 1998.
She enjoyed music and sang in her church and during her daily
duties in the home. She also enjoyed quilting and needlecrafts. She
was a member of West Chehalem Friends Church.
Survivors include: sisters, Lucy Anderson of Canton, Ohio, and Lois
Smith of Greenleaf, Idaho; son Mark Rousey-Seidel of Petaluma,
Calif.; daughter Sharon Lee of Oakland, Calif.; and two
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers Wayne and Roy Clark and
sister Ruth Corbin.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. May 12, 2006, at West
Chehalem Friends Church, 16700 N.E. North Valley Road.
Robert
D. Smith
McMinnville native Robert Drake Smith of Newberg died on May 3,
2006. He was 63.
He was born Aug. 21, 1942, in McMinnville to Robert and Elsie (Gehring)
Smith. He grew up and attended school in the area and received a
bachelor’s degree in business administration and military science.
He entered the United States Army in September 1964 and served in
the Army and Army Reserves until June 1968. He owned and operated a
cabinet shop and built cabinets for many homes. On Dec. 6, 1981, he
married Patricia Angell in Newberg; they made their home in the
area.
He worked for Families United for Independent Living (FUFIL),
building housing for people with developmental disabilities.
Survivors include: wife Patricia of Newberg; son Morgan of Newberg;
daughters, Abigail Jorgenson of Chimicum, Wash., Amy Harvey of
Portland and Mia and Cristen Babineau of Middletown, Calif.; sister
Olive Marshall of Tigard; and seven grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3 p.m. May 13, 2006, at the
First United Methodist Church of Newberg with the Rev. Peter Blank
officiating. Committal is private.

Kyle Lowe
Newberg native Kyle Lowe died May 2, 2006, in Timber in a logging
accident. He was 23.
He was born Nov. 20, 1982, in Newberg to Bruce and Linda (Halstead)
Lowe. He spent much of his life in the Newberg/Dundee area, recently
moving to McMinnville. He attended school in Newberg and graduated
from Newberg High School in 2001. He worked for several years as a
wildland firefighter for Ferguson Land Management, then most
recently as a logger for Cross & Crown Logging.
He enjoyed working on cars, welding, fishing, four-wheeling,
hunting and barbecuing for friends. He was also part of the recovery
team for the Space Shuttle Columbia.
Survivors include: parents Bruce and Linda Lowe of Newberg; brother
Brian of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; sister Sarah of Newberg;
grandmother Marcella Halstead; and grandparents Don and Beverly Lowe
of Sublimity.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon today (Saturday) at
St. Peter Catholic Church with Father Jim Nibler as celebrant.

Victoria S. McCulloch
Victoria Susan McCulloch of Newberg died on April 29, 2006. She was
98.
She was born March 8, 1908, in Joplin, Mo., to George and Florence
Tull.
She grew up and attended school in Greeley, Colo. On June 15, 1925,
she married Grant McCulloch in Greeley. The couple moved to follow
her husband’s job as a miner. In 1941 they moved to Newberg where
she lived the rest of her life. She worked in the Willamette Ship
and Steel Yards of Portland and during World War II her husband
worked as a welder in the Portland shipyards. Victoria worked at
Northwest Nut Company, Williams Air Control in Tigard and A-dec Inc.
before her retirement. Her husband preceded her in death in March
1976.
She enjoyed playing cards, sometimes at the VFW hall in Newberg, as
well as playing Scrabble and going to Reno. She was a member of the
11th Hour Sherwood Elks.
Survivors include: son Grant Jr. of Tigard; brother Woodrow Tull of
Kamas, Utah; sister Reathel Koss of Price, Utah; seven
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and three
great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughter
Patricia, brothers Harold and Oliver Tull and sister Lola Gibbany.
Chapel viewing and visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

J. Lyon
Betty J. Lyon of Newberg died May 3, 2006, of lung cancer in
Beaverton. She was 85.
She was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Newberg to Elmo and Freda (Kinney)
Blalock and lived here nearly all her life. She worked in the food
processing industry, in nut packing plants and as a food
demonstrator at Darigold in McMinnville. She married Wallace Lyon in
May 1942; the couple later divorced and he preceded her in death.
She enjoyed walking, homemaking and keeping up her yard. She was a
member of the Methodist church.
Survivors include many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Fred.
Disposition is by cremation. A funeral service will be held at 2
p.m. Monday at Astor House, 3801 Hayes St. She will be buried at
Noble Cemetery.

Loretta Walker
Loretta Walker of Newberg died May 3, 2006, at Providence St.
Vincent Hospital in Portland. She was 80.
She was born on Nov. 26, 1925, to John and Betsy Fry in Mallard,
Iowa.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dundee.
She enjoyed fishing, crabbing, crocheting, dancing and spending time
with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include: Sons, Clarence and Bob of Des Moines, Iowa, John
of Dundee and Mark of Newberg; daughters, Cheryl Wilson of
Beaverton, Jeanette Sindiler of California and Loretta Ebarb of
Dayton.
She was preceded in death by her husband in September 1986 and her
twin boys at birth in 1954.

Norman G. Watt
Norman Gregory Watt of Newberg died while motorcycling near Carlton
on April 29, 2006. He was 56.
He was born July 22, 1949, to Lester and Gladys (Saatio) in Detroit,
Michigan.
He lived in California before moving to McMinnville when he entered
the eighth-grade. In 1967 he graduated from McMinnville High School.
After his service in the United States Army he returned to
McMinnville and worked for GAF in Beaverton for 18 months. On March
3, 1972 he married Linda Parr in Vancouver, Wash., and they made
their home in Sherwood. In 1988 they moved to Newberg where they
have since resided.
He worked for Fought Steel Fab in Tigard for 20 years, then at
Cascade Steel in McMinnville, where he was employed at the time of
his death.
He enjoyed backpacking, camping, hiking, kayaking and dirt biking.
He was a member of the Harley Hogs.
Survivors include: wife Linda of Newberg; son Doug of Bend;
daughter Jessica Wood of Hillsboro; brothers, Roger and Gerald, both
of White Salmon, Wash.; sisters, Becky of Newberg, Martha Knapp of
Aloha and Eve James of Beaverton; and granddaughter Aliza Watt of
Bend.

Esther N. Arnholtz-Rueck
Newberg resident Esther Nettie Arnholtz-Rueck died April 22, 2006.
She was 94.
She was born April 4, 1912, to Fred and Tina Arnholtz in St. Johns.
She graduated from Franklin High School in Portland. She married
George Rueck Jr. on April 2, 1932. The lived and worked on a family
farm in Scholls. She worked jobs at a retail store there, at a
Portland restaurant, and at casualty claims company.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening and candlemaking. She was a member
of the Portland Christian Center for more than 75 years.
Survivors include: son Don; daughter Kathleen Dawkins; sisters,
Evelyn Rueck and Frances Bateson; six grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband George, brother Ralph, and
sisters Myrtle Heath and Hazel Rabbe.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Portland
Christian Center, 5700 S.W. Dosch Road. A family graveside service
will be held prior to the service.

Doherty
Kenneth R. Doherty died April 17, 2006, in Newberg. He was 81.
He was born Aug. 30, 1924, to William and Dora (Ownbey) Doherty in
Milton-Freewater. He graduated from McLoughlin High School. He
studied engineering at Oregon State University for one year before
entering military service in 1943. He served in Army in the Pacific
Theater during World War II. In May 1945, he was chosen to be in
Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s honor guard in Manila and Tokyo. He
received an honorable discharge in 1946.
He graduated in 1949 from the University of Oregon with a degree in
business administration. He joined his father’s life insurance
business. Two years later, he started his own business, Ken Doherty
Insurance. In 1968, he merged with Everett Stroble and Bud Mabry to
form Stroble, Mabry and Doherty Insurance, merging again 15 years
later with another agency to become Wheatland Insurance Center.
He married Helen Keller on Oct. 15, 1949. They lived in Pendleton
until March, when they moved to Friendsview Retirement Community in
Newberg.
He enjoyed golf and trips with his wife to Hawaii, Mexico and the
Bahamas. He attended MacArthur Honor Guard reunions throughout the
United States. He was a member of First United Methodist Church for
53 years. In Pendleton, he was a member of Chamber of Commerce,
Kiwanis, Masonic Lodge, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign
Wars.
Survivors include: wife Helen; daughters, Kathy Ruggles and Debbie
Connell; brothers, Dale and Victor; and five granddaughters.
A graveside service was held April 24 at Willamette National
Cemetery in Portland. A memorial service will be held June 24 at the
First United Methodist Church in Pendleton.

G. Phanton
Pearl Geraldine Englandtin Ostby Phanton died April 3, 2006. She
was 96.
She was born Oct. 30, 1909, to Matilda and John Ostby in Lowry,
Minn. She graduated from high school in 1925 and earned a nursing
degree in 1932 from the Winnipeg (Manitoba) General Hospital.
She married Maurice Bunn on March 17, 1934, in Winnipeg. They
divorced in 1945. She moved in 1947 to Vancouver, British Columbia,
Canada, and in 1953 to Sacramento, Calif. She retired from nursing
in 1970.
She married Felix Phanton on Oct. 9, 1972. He preceded her in death
10 years later.
She enjoyed reading, dancing, deep-sea fishing and traveling. She
was a member of Unity Church in Sacramento.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Attrell’s
Newberg Funeral, 207 Villa Road. Pastor Peter Blank will officiate.

Joe D. Lyon
Former Newberg resident Joe D. Lyon died April 13, 2006. He was 88.
He was born July 17, 1917, to Ira and Golda (Quigley) Lyon in
Plano, Iowa. On July 22, 1944, he married Mary in Salinas, Calif.
They moved to Newberg, where they lived for more than 50 years. In
1995, they moved to Salem. His wife preceded him in death in March
2003. He was living in Scio at the time of his death.
Survivors include: daughter Lynne Heller of Brownsville;
grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Joseph William Rourke died of natural causes on April 19, 2006, at
Friendsview Retirement Community in Newberg. He was 91.
He was born Oct. 10, 1914, in Broken Bow, Neb. He married Leola
Gibson on Jan. 19, 1938, in Boise. He worked as a civilian inspector
at Gowan Field in Boise, working with aircraft damaged in the
Pacific during World War II. He later worked for Vernon Brothers and
Morrison-Knudsen before becoming a mechanic at Roy Davidson’s Ford
Dealership, which later became Bob Rice Ford. He retired in 1986. He
and his wife moved in December 1991 to Friendsview Retirement
Community in Newberg.
He was a member of Whitney Friends Church in Boise, as well as
North Valley Friends in Newberg.
Survivors include: wife Leola of Newberg; sisters, Helen Gibson and
Arletta West; daughters, Myrna Tuning of Wilder, Idaho, Maurine
Freeman of Eagle, Idaho, and Robin Fritts of Moro; sons, Joseph Jr.
of Newberg, Michael of DeSoto, Mo., Stanley and Dennis of Boise, and
John of Wilder, Idaho; 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund Rourke and Mary
Craig; infant son Brian Dean; brother Harold; and sisters Mary Litty
and Catherine Waldron.
A memorial service was held April 21 at North Valley Friends Church
in Newberg. Another memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday
at Whitney Friends Church in Boise. Burial will be at Cloverdale
Cemetery in Boise.

Mildred M. Hollenbeck
Former St. Paul resident Mildred Mae Hollenbeck died April 10,
2006, at a care facility in Newberg. She was 97.
She was born Nov. 24, 1908, to William and Gertrude (Ansel) Lesh in
Crystal, Idaho, where she grew up and attended elementary school.
She graduated from Washington High School in Portland in 1929. On
Feb. 9, 1929, she married Richard Hollenbeck in Portland. They
settled in Trout Lake, Wash., in 1930. They operated a fruit orchard
and also cut and sold Christmas trees.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1968. She then moved to
Portland and graduated from the Walla Walla School of Nursing in
1970. She worked for Portland Adventist Hospital for nine years,
then moved to Salem, where she worked for Salem Memorial Hospital
for nine years. She retired and continued to live in Salem until
1996, when she moved to St. Paul to live with family.
She was an avid traveler, a poet and a painter. She enjoyed trout
fishing. She made more than 100 afghans for her grandchildren and
other family members. She was a member of Seventh-day Adventist
Church in Newberg. She was active in the Dorcas Society, now known
as Community Services.
Survivors include: sons, Richard of Salem and William of Portland;
daughters, Elaine Connor of St. Paul and Lois Stevens of Trout Lake,
Wash,; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and many nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by: brothers, Harold, Donald, Ernest,
Gilbert, Oliver and Lawrence; and sisters, Olive Hollenbeck, Edith
Kyte, Sara Jane Quackenbush, Gertrude Rader and Mabel LaVander.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today (Saturday) at the
Seventh-day Adventist Church in Newberg with Pastor Tim Mayne
officiating. Private interment is at Klickitat County Cemetery in
White Salmon, Wash.

Newberg resident Edna Jeanette Johnson died April 6, 2006, at a
care center in Newberg. She was 85.
She was born Oct. 18, 1920, to John and Martha (Overson)
Hendrickson in North Dakota. She married Joseph Johnson on June 20,
1939, in Sisseton, S.D. They moved with their family from Oslo,
Minn., to Newberg in 1951.
Her husband preceded her in death in July 2000.
She enjoyed family picnics and holidays, cooking, gardening,
bowling and animals.
Survivors include: sons, Merkely of Newberg and Jerome of
Hillsboro; daughters, Connie Senter of Wilsonville, Carolyn Melson
of Dundee and Cherie Druery of Newberg; 10 grandchildren; four great
grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Helmer and Albert
Hendrickson.
A funeral service was held April 10 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral
Chapel with Pastor Kevin Kopsa officiating. A concluding service
followed at Valley View Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Newberg.

Newberg native Pamela Jo Smith-Hattig died April 7, 2006. She was
52.
She was born in 1953 to Donald Smith and Eva Kuhl-Smith in Newberg.
Her family said she had a good sense of humor.
Survivors include: daughter Jennifer Stone; son Phillip Hattig Jr.;
grandsons, Anthony, Aaron and Kyle; brother Don Smith Jr.; mother
Eva Currey; stepfather Dwain Currey; uncle Joe Kuhl of Woodburn;
aunts, Marilyn Twenge of Newberg, Beatrice Carothers, Florence Wirts
and Audrey White, all of Portland; and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Phill, and father, Don

Arthur H. Nelson
Dundee native and longtime resident Arthur H. Nelson died April 3,
2006, in Tigard. He was 98.
He was born in 1908 to Mamie and Hans Nelson in Dundee. His father
died in the 1918 influenza epidemic and his family was left to farm
100 acres of prunes. He graduated high school and shortly after
began working at a pulp mill. He was married to Clara Miller for
more than 70 years. She preceded him in death in 2005. They lived in
Dundee most of their lives before retiring in Tigard. He sold real
estate for 10 years, starting at age 70.
Survivors include: son David; daughter Joyce Colling; seven
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Phyllis May Barnett, who has family in Newberg, died April 3, 2006,
at her home in Prineville. She was 74.
She was born July 29, 1931, to Joseph and Audrey (Baxter) Dalton in
Portland. She married Marvin Barnett on June 24, 1949, in Portland.
She worked as a bookkeeper.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
in Prineville. She was involved in the Republican Party. She enjoyed
crafts and remodeling.
Survivors include: husband Marvin of Prineville; daughter, Darre of
Burns; sons, Rex of Dubia, United Arab Emirates, and Jay of
Prineville; daughter Rebel Shettler of Prineville; brother Lawrence
Dalton of Newberg; 29 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and
numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son Wayne; three
brothers; two sisters and two grandchildren.

Former Newberg resident Mae Marie Johnson died April 4, 2006, at a
McMinnville care facility. She was 95.
She was born June 9, 1910, to James and Mertie (Stong) VanArt in
Newville, N.D. She married Victor Johnson on Nov. 24, 1935, in
Minneapolis. He preceded her in death in 1998. She moved to Newberg
to be near family.
She worked as a sales clerk for JC Penney, Montgomery Ward and
Dayton’s. She was a member of Oak Hills Wesleyan Church in
Rochester, Minn. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, baking and working
in her flower garden.
Survivors include: sons, Ronald of Edmonds, Wash., and Merrill of
Newberg; grandchildren Brian of Kent, Wash., and Kyle of Newberg;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Clara, Edna,
Oscar (Eldie), Earl, Leo, Gladys, Bessie and Evelyn.

Neb. She worked for West Coast Telephone Company in McMinnville and
later transferred to Newberg. She stayed with the company, which was
bought out by General Telephone, until her retirement.
She married Walter Weissert on Feb. 3, 1930. He preceded her in
death on Sept. 14, 1986.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newberg,
as well as of the church’s quilting club. She was a member of the
Easter Star along with her husband. She was also a member of PEO and
Soroptimist.
Survivors include: son, Bryce of Tacoma, Wash.; grandchildren,
Bryce Weissert Jr., Heidi Greeley, and Robin Pratt;
great-grandchildren, Nikki and Alex Greeley; and sister, Catherine
Osborn of McMinnville.
She was preceded in death by sister Eva Hascall and brothers,
James, Steve and Joe Arrants.
A service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United
Methodist Church in Newberg.

Betty T. South
Former Newberg resident Betty Theresa South died March 30, 2006, at
her home in Lafayette. She was 72.
She was born July 21, 1933, to Celestine and Adelaide (Nunes) Souza
in Laton, Calif. She grew up in Southern California and attended
school there. She attended beauty school and worked in California.
She moved in 1969 to Oregon, where she lived in Newberg and worked
at Newberg Terrace Beauty Salon for several years. She later
operated from her home and also worked as a hairdresser at Newberg
Care Home.
She enjoyed flowers, dogs and gambling.
Survivors include: son Michael McCoy of Lafayette; daughters, Lisa
Buckley of Newberg and Dana Martin of Sheridan; sisters, Sally Ann
Williams of McMinnville, Sandra Roggers of Lafayette and Wanda
Johnson of Newberg; seven grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held April 4 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral
Chapel with Deacon Chuck Amsberry officiating. Committal followed at
Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Terry Tuttle West of Newberg died March 29, 2006, at a Newberg care
facility. He was 68.
He was born April 10, 1937, to Gale and LoRayne (Tuttle) West in
Spokane, Wash. He graduated in 1955 from Central Valley High School
in Green Acres, Wash. He attended the University of Washington
before serving in the Army from 1958 to 1962. He returned to the
University of Washington after his military service, graduated, and
then entered graduate school there.
On March 24, 1974, he married Norma Gaddis. She preceded him in
death in 1994.
He was an investigator for a private company until 1982. He
continued working with computers until retirement in 2002.
He enjoyed bicycling, chess and music. He played in an Army band in
Fairbanks, Alaska, for two and a half years.
Survivors include: sister Brenda Wooldridge of Newberg and numerous
nieces and nephews.
No services will be held per the family’s request.

J. Bernard
William J. Bernard of Woodburn died April 1, 2006. He was 77.
He was born Jan. 15, 1929, in McMinnville. He graduated from St.
Paul High School. He married Barbara Dungey on Sept. 16, 1950, in
St. Paul. The couple made their home in St. Paul, where he owned and
operated a service station and wrecking yard. He served as a
sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a
member of the Veterans of Foreign War. His wife preceded him in
death in August 2002.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and attending auctions.
Survivors include: sons, Bill of Woodburn and Pete of Newberg;
daughter Janice of Keizer; sister Marge Myhra; four grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.
Visitation is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Cornwell Colonial Chapel
in Woodburn. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St.
Luke’s Catholic Church in Woodburn. Private interment is at
Fairfield Cemetery in Gervais.

Albert P. Gaibler
Albert Paul Gaibler of Newberg died March 27, 2006, at Providence
Newberg Hospital. He was 88.
He was born Nov. 8, 1917, to John and Amalia (Reiker) Gaibler in
Eustis, Neb. He moved to Oregon with his family in 1934 after
graduating from Plum Creek Grade School in Nebraska, and then moved
to Newberg in 1935. He received his high school diploma in Camas,
Wash.
He worked for Standard Oil and served as a radio operator for the
Army 71st Signal Company from June 1942 to October 1945. He made
five landings in Italy, Africa and southern France, then returned to
California for retraining and was sent to the South Pacific near New
Guinea. After discharge, he returned to work for Standard Oil. In
October 1946 he married Idella Wohlgemuth at Zion Lutheran Church in
Newberg. He became the distributor for Standard Oil in 1953 and
retired in 1978.
Gaibler was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. After he retired, he
volunteered for F.I.S.H. (Friends In Service to Humanity) for 16
years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and being involved with the
community.
Survivors include: wife Idella of Newberg; brother Walter of
Newberg; sisters, Amanda Peak of York, Neb., and Leona Cline of
Camas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing and visitation will be at Zion Lutheran Church from 9:30 to
10:15 a.m. today (Saturday). A funeral will follow at the church
with Pastor Steve Estrem officiating. Committal will be at the
Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

L. Anderson
Vonnie Ludine Anderson of Newberg died March 26, 2006. She was 86.
She was born June 3, 1919. She married Cecil Anderson in
California. She worked in Sacramento with her family before moving
to Newberg. In 1953, the couple moved their family to Dillingham,
Alaska, to serve as a missionary support family for five years. Upon
returning to Newberg they built and operated the first A&W
restaurant in town. In 1964, the couple bought the George Trunk Farm
in Dundee, where they raised Christmas trees. In 1968, she opened
Flowers by Vonnie.
She enjoyed traveling, her flower shop, rose gardening, craft
boutique, art work and painting.
Survivors include: husband Cecil of Newberg: children, Kelly, Ken
and Karen: four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held Sunday at Avamere Assisted
Living.
Cornelia Alma Hester
Cornelia Alma Hester, who has family in Sherwood, died March 27,
2006. She was 92.
She was born Sept. 6, 1913, in Brooklyn, New York, to Lillian
DeLaMotta. She graduated from high school in Brooklyn then worked
for Metropolitan Life as an actuarial assistant. She married William
Hester on Dec. 12, 1943, in Brooklyn. The couple settled in Molalla
and lived there for 28 years. She moved to King City after her
husbands death in 1976 and lived there 12 years.
She was a member of Portland First Church of the Nazarene. She
enjoyed reading particular books of the Bible, fishing, playing
cards, bowling, family gatherings, discussing politics and listening
to Rush Limbaugh’s radio show.
Survivors include: sons William of Sherwood and Tom of Oregon City:
daughters Mary Riley of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Peggy Ackley of
Tigard: eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Friday at the Willamette National
Cemetery in Portland. A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m.
April 8 at Portland First Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Mark
Goodwin officiating.

L. Quinn
Sherwood native Mabel Louise Quinn died March 25, 2006. She was 89.
She was born Oct. 13, 1916, in Sherwood to Emil Julius and Minnie
(Kruger) Lawrenz. She attended Tigard High School. She married James
Quinn on June 5, 1936. They lived in Portland and then in Garden
Home. In 1960, she began working for Sears and Roebuck in the
customer service department. She retired in the 1970s. She live with
daughter Sheila in Sherwood until death.
She enjoyed fishing with sister Della, traveling with her daughters
and a trip to Israel.
Survivors include: daughters, Sheila Holland-Nix of Sherwood and
Patricia Bither of Tualatin: sisters, Emily Cochran of Sherwood and
Della Mosher of Nehalem: five grandchildren: two great-grandchildren
and several nieces and nephews.
Her husband James and sister Ada Fox both preceded her in death.
A funeral was held Thursday at Attrell’s Funeral Chapel in
Sherwood. A graveside service was held at St. Anthony Cemetery in
Tigard; a reception followed at the home of Sheila and Terry
Holland-Nix.

Matthew J. Vachter
Matthew J. Vachter of St. Paul died March 19, 2006, at Avamere in
Newberg. He was 98.
He was born Feb. 11, 1908, to Frank and Anna (Rook) Vachter in
Gervais. He lived all his life in St. Paul, where he was a farmer.
He was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church and an honorary life
member of the St. Paul Knights of Columbus. He married Louise
Sprauer in Mt. Angel on Feb. 12, 1936.
He enjoyed chopping wood and riding his riding lawn mower.
Surviving include: wife Louise of St. Paul; sons, Kenneth of Scio
and Steven of St. Paul; daughters, Sharon Eklund of Newberg, Barbara
Olson of Salem and Marianne Chambers of Gervais; 14 grandchildren
and 13 great-grandchildren.
A Recitation of the Rosary was held Thursday at St. Paul Catholic
Church in St. Paul; a Mass of Christian Burial followed. Interment
will be in St. Paul Catholic Cemetery in St. Paul in care of

Caruso
Santo Caruso of Sherwood died in Portland on March 24, 2006. He was
74.
He was born Nov. 1, 1931, in Pawucket, R.I., where he grew up and
attended school. He moved with his family to Van Nuys, Calif., where
he finished high school and worked in his family’s food market.
He married Beverly Harvey on Oct. 26, 1952, and the couple lived in
North Hollywood for 12 years while he worked in his uncle’s lumber
yard. He started his own business and moved to Claremont, Calif.,
where he lived with his family for 16 years, then moved to Bullhead
City, Ariz., where he continued the business with his sons until
retiring in 1998. The couple moved to Sherwood three years ago to be
near their son, and because his health was declining.
He enjoyed traveling in his motorhome in the United States and
Mexico and being with his family. He was a member of the Knights of
Columbus and St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood.
Survivors include: wife Beverly of Sherwood; sons, Christopher of
Sherwood, Stephen of Las Vegas and Dennis of Bullhead City; sisters,
Anna Boyle of San Jose, Calif., Mary Ann Zigler of Palmdale, Calif.,
and Rose Stevens of North Hollywood; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Francis Catholic Church.

Autumn Blaine Bowlin died an hour and four minutes after she was
born March 13, 2006, in Newberg.
She was born to Jason and Sunny (Wirth) Bowlin of Dayton. The
family said she will “live in the hearts of her family forever.”
Survivors include: her parents; brothers, Jordan and David of
Dayton; sister Sierra of Dayton; grandparents, Stephanie and David
Bowlin of Dayton and Michael and Andie Wirth of Squaw Valley,
Calif.; and great-grandparents, Desmond Wirth of Squaw Valley and
Patsy and Andrew Brodie of Quincy, Calif.
A graveside service with interment will be held at 11 a.m. today
(Saturday) at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg with Pastor John

H. Perkins
Jeanne H. Perkins, who worked in Newberg for 10 years and has
family here, died March 20, 2006. She was 69.
She was born Jan. 1, 1937, in Bangor, Maine. She grew up in Maine,
Massachusetts and New Hampshire. She moved to Bakersfield, Calif.,
in 1956. She married James Perkins on May 5, 1957, in Las Vegas.
They lived in California, Italy, Germany and the Philippines. She
worked in Sonora, Calif., as a dispatcher for the Tuolomne County
Sheriff’s Department. She later managed a self-storage company in
Reno, Nev.
She moved to Woodburn in 1991 and worked for 10 years for the
Suntron Company in Newberg, retiring in 2005.
She enjoyed bowling.
Survivors include: sons, Jeff of Kauai, Hawaii, Dale of Newberg and
Pepper of Joseph; daughters, Vicki Armstrong of Lansing, Mich., and
Cindy Hunt of Las Vegas; brother Bob Bower of Fort Myers; sisters,
Rita Potter of Dexter, Maine, Laura Laurent of Corinna, Maine, Norma
Schilling of Newberg, Barbara Weaver of Owls Head, Maine, and Betty
Maddocks of Winthrop, Maine; six grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in February.

Richard S. Harris
Richard Scott Harris, who has family in the Newberg area, died
March 13, 2006, at a Portland hospital. He was 56.
He was born Sept. 13, 1949, to Marleau and Patricia (Prather)
Harris in Eugene. He was diagnosed with diabetes at 9 years old and
had surgeries and illnesses. He went to high school in Corvallis and
graduated from Oregon State University, earning an elementary
education degree. He lived in Oregon City and Beaverton. He taught
at Cooper Mountain Elementary School. He retired for health reasons.
He enjoyed golf, fishing and baseball. He was a member of the
Tigard Methodist Church.
Survivors include: mother Patricia Harris of Beaverton; brother
Patrick of Newberg; and sisters, Jeanne Boyd of Newberg and Barbara
Stensgard of Emperial, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1994.

Marjorie L. Davidson
Dundee resident Marjorie Loretta Davidson died March 7, 2006, at
Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 91.
She was born June 23, 1914, to William and Lulu (Pickens) Winters
in Marmot. She grew up and went to school in Sandy and in Willamina.
She lived at Mountain Dale and in Banks. In September 1941 she
married Arthur Davidson. They made their home in McMinnville and
moved to Dundee in 1944.
She worked at the Newberg Natural Food Store before buying it; she
owned it more than 25 years. She enjoyed gardening. She grew African
violets for many years and won awards at flower conventions. She
traveled to many states to judge African violets.
Survivors include: husband Arthur of Grand Ronde; son Roger of
Tigard; daughter Loretta Hubbell of Newberg; sisters, Thelma Buswell
of Molalla and Genevieve Maben of Gresham; five grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild
She was preceded in death by sister Leila and great-granddaughter
Samantha Severance.

D. Steimlosk
Former Newberg resident Neoma Dora Steimlosk died March 12, 2006,
at her home in Hillsboro. She was 89.
She was born April 25, 1916, to Edward and Vida Adams in Chase,
Mich. She graduated in 1934 from Hazel Park High School, in a suburb
of Detroit, Mich. She was captain of the basketball team.
She and her husband, Bill, were married on Oct. 8, 1938, and they
made their home in Hazel Park. As a young woman she worked in an ice
cream parlor and at a Plymouth car factory, and she would later
become a stay-at-home mom. She and her husband moved in 1987 to
Tigard. Her husband preceded her in death in 1991, at which time she
moved to Sherwood, where she was active at the senior center. She
moved in 2001 to Avamere in Newberg, and again in 2005 to a foster
home in Hillsboro.
She enjoyed fishing, traveling and spending time with friends and
family. She was a member of Willowbrook Christian Fellowship in
Sherwood.
She was preceded in death by son Dale and daughter Lois.
Survivors include: daughter Sandy of Sherwood; seven grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren; sister Dorothy Cyrus and several nieces and
nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at
Sherwood United Methodist Church, 22280 S.W. Washington St. Services

Evert F. Aldridge
Woodburn resident Evert F. Aldridge, who has family in Newberg,
died of natural causes on March 2, 2006. He was 71.
He was born May 10, 1934, in Lamar, Colo. He served in the Army
during the Korean War. He married Betty Huddleston on March 8, 1957,
in Vancouver, Wash. He worked for 25 years as a life insurance agent
for Prudential Insurance Company. Upon retirement he moved to
Woodburn Senior Estates in 1989. He had also lived in Longview,
Wash., and Monument, where he had a ranch.
He was a member of the Woodburn Christian Church. He enjoyed
golfing, traveling, rose gardening, hunting, fishing and spending
time with family. He was a state wrestling champion and a
professional baseball player.
Survivors include: wife Betty of Woodburn; daughters, Linda Atwell
of Silverton, Beth Molzahn of Newberg and Kandi Savage of Cove; son
Evert Jr. of Pleasant Hill; brothers, John of Keizer and Russell of

Holland
Former Newberg resident Ray Edgar Holland died of cancer on Feb.
22, 2006. He was 68.
He was born May 12, 1937, in Union Valley, Ark. He served in the
Army. He married Teresa in 1972. He worked as a longshoreman in
Portland. He lived in Newberg for 24 years, leaving in 1998. He
lived in Bend at the time of his death.
Survivors include: wife Teresa of Bend; son Chet; daughters,
Kimberly Boone, Tricia Woodson and Michelle Holland-Bohna; brothers,
Eugene, Lemmie, Ben and Butch; sister, Betty; six grandchildren and
one great-grandchild.

Donald P. Richter
Donald Peter Richter, who worked in Newberg at dental-equipment
manufacturer A-dec Inc., died Feb. 26, 2006, at his home in Gaston.
He was 71.
He was born Feb. 1, 1935, to Joseph and Theresa (Ditrich) Richter
in Brooks. He moved with his family to Gaston at a young age.
Following high school, he attended vocational school to be a
machinist and tool and die maker. He married Velda Fink on Feb. 11,
1956, at the St. John’s Catholic Church in Gaston.
They made their home in Alaska, where he co-owned and operated a
logging camp. They returning to Oregon in 1964. He worked for A-dec
as a machinist and supervisor for 18 years, retiring at age 55.
He was a member of the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Forest
Grove. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include: wife Velda of Gaston ; sons, Donald, John,
Michael, Kelvin and Gregory; brothers, Richard and Robert; sisters,
Mary Scott of Canby and Marlene Mills of Forest Grove; seven

Former Newberg resident Helen Louise Hutchins died Feb. 17, 2006,
at the Beaverton home of her daughter, where she resided. She was 87
She was born Dec. 5, 1918, to Wilmer and Bertha (Short) Cannon in
Seaford, Del., where she was raised and educated. In 1935, she
married Phillip Pyper. They were later divorced. In 1967, she
married Russell Hutchins. He preceded her in death in 1977.
She worked as a secretary for a mutual funds company. She lived in
Scholls, Newberg and Portland before making her home with her
daughter in Beaverton. She is one of the original volunteers in 1953
who raised funds to build the Newberg hospital.
She enjoyed traveling, scrapbooking and spending time with family.
Survivors include: daughter Kay Bridges of Beaverton; brother
Carlton Cannon of Seaford; granddaughters, Lynne Bridges of West
Linn and Lori Scholz of Newberg; and four great-grandchildren.
The family held a celebration of her life. Burial was at Willamette
National Cemetery in Portland.

Newberg resident Donna K. Parcel died of natural causes Feb. 22,
2006, in Portland. She was 45.
She was born April 9, 1960, in Iowa. She worked as a caregiver. She
enjoyed bead work and collecting marbles.
She was married to Doug Wyatt for 20 years.
Survivors include: brothers, David, Bob and Chuck; and daughter,
Misty Dawn.
She was preceded in death by Dorothy Parcel.

Bakken
Former Newberg resident Odin A. Bakken died Feb. 26, 2006. He was
73.
He was born on Long Island, N.Y., and raised in Newberg. He lived
in Lake Oswego and Portland. He served in the military during the
Korean War.
Survivors include: wife Patricia; sons, Chris, Mark and Greg; eight
grandchildren; and sisters, Priscilla Keller and Thea Easly.

Longtime Newberg resident Shirley Northcutt died Feb. 26, 2006, at
Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 72.
She was born Oct. 25, 1933, to Carl and Mable (Shoemaker) Haack in
Kansas City, Mo. She graduated from Los Gatos (Calif.) High School.
She was a homemaker. For a time, she owned Newberg Printing. She
lived in Newberg for 40 years and was a resident of Nut Tree Mobile
Home Park.

Philomouth, Lennie of Vancouver, Wash., and Rick of Galveston,

Newberg resident Betty Ann Mount died Feb. 19, 2006. She was 75.
She was born Oct. 1, 1930, to Arthur and Rosa (McIntosh) King in
Cushing, Okla. The family moved to Newberg when she was a child. She
graduated from Newberg High School in 1949. She worked for Kresses
Drug Store in Portland.
On Nov. 18, 1952, she married Tracy Mount in Seattle. They made
their home in Newberg and later moved to California, where she
earned a nursing degree from Modesto Junior College. The family
returned to Newberg in 1967. She worked at Newberg Care Home. In
1980, she went to work for Fairview Training Center in Salem, where
she worked 15 years before retiring in 1995. She enjoyed traveling
in her retirement and spent time in Arizona as a “snowbird.”
She enjoyed volkswalking, spending time with family, singing
Karaoke and watching “American Idol” on TV. She was a Portland Trail
Blazers fan.

sons, Darrell of Dundee and Dale of Newberg; sisters, Rachel Wall of

15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Herbert King, in March

D. Cloepfil
Former Newberg resident Darrell “Boise” D. Cloepfil died Feb. 19,
2006, at his home in Carlton. He was 81.
He was born Aug. 14, 1924, to Donald and Lola (Pickett) Cloepfil in
Hunter, Kan. He moved to Boise in 1937 and to Newberg in 1938. He
played on a Newberg High School state champion football team. He
served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned
to Newberg, where he finished high school before going to Oregon
State University. He joined the Merchant Marines and later moved to
Carlton to become a farmer. His crops included prunes, walnuts,
cherries and grain. He also worked at the Trappist Abbey near
Lafayette.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, watching college football and
dancing. He was a member of the Carlton American Legion, Oregon Farm
Bureau and a past member of the board of directors of the Oregon
Quarterhorse Association.
Survivors include: wife Arlene of Carlton; son Richard of Carlton;
daughter Linda Boline of Dallas; brothers, Howard of Lincoln City,
Kirk of Springfield and Douglas of Newberg; sisters, Helen Miller of
Salem, Joyce Brandt of Spokane, Wash., Cora Burgess of Seattle and
Donna Moore of Newberg; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brother Vance and sister Louise Hess.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at the Chapel of
Macy and Son Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans St., McMinnville.

Arthur H. McCoy
Arthur H. McCoy, a longtime broadcast executive who had homes in
Newberg and Bend, died Feb. 10, 2006, during emergency heart surgery
in Hawaii. He was 88.
McCoy founded and built Pacific & Southern Broadcasting and then
McCoy Broadcasting, which owned radio stations in Oregon, among
other places. He was active in the Providence Newberg Health
Foundation, serving as endorsement chairman for The Time is Now
Campaign, and also supported juvenile diabetes research at
Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
McCoy was married for more than 60 years to Virginia McCoy. She died
in 2002.
Survivors include: wife Dorothy; son Craig of Lake Oswego;
daughter Barbara Gartner of Des Moines, Iowa; and grandchildren,
Meagan and Michael McCoy and Melissa and Mike Gartner.
A memorial service will be held March 8 on Maui, Hawaii.

S. Wentworth
McMinnville resident Austin Scott Wentworth, who has family in
Dundee, died Feb. 12, 2006, at Chehalem Health and Rehabilitation in
Newberg. He was 99.
He was born July 16, 1906, to Charles and Alice Wentworth in Dover,
N.H. He was raised in Los Angeles. He was married to Faye (Groves)
for 62 years. Most of his adult years were spent in the gardening
business. He worked for Manna, a charitable food distribution
ministry in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
He moved to Dundee with his son, Dan, in 2004, following the death
of his wife that year. He was a regular presence at Chehalem Senior
Center in Newberg and resided at the Hampton Assisted Living center
in McMinnville and the Chehalem Health and Rehabilitation Center in
Newberg.
Survivors include: daughters, Dorothy of Los Angeles; sons, Dan of Dundee,
Lonnie of Moore, Oklahoma, and Jimmy of Redondo Beach,
Calif.; brother, Walter of Hollywood, Calif.; sister, Lorraine Smith
of Hollywood; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Illa; brother Norman;
and sisters, Madeline, Betty, Phyllis.
A private service was held Feb. 13 at Adamson’s Sheridan Funeral
Home. Burial was at Green Crest Memorial Park in Sheridan.

D. Buck
Former Newberg resident Jincy Dawn Buck died Feb. 15, 2006, at
Providence St. Vincent Hospital in Portland. She was 80.
She was born Dec. 12, 1925, to Jewel and Anna Bowen in Canby. She
married Illif Van Ronk in October 1945. He preceded her in death in
September 1972. She married Winston Buck in 1997. He preceded her in
death in 1998.
She was a chef, homemaker and master gardener. She lived in in
Canby, Tualatin, Newberg and Carlton. She was a member of the
Yamhill County Gleaners and the Fuchsia Society.
She enjoyed gardening and hunting.
Survivors include: brother James Bowen; sister Gloria Myers;
daughters, Jewel Zimmerman and Jincy Farley; sons, Jerry and Joseph
Van Ronk; stepson Steven Buck; 26 grandchildren; 34
great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by son Lawrence in 1987.
A private memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. March 5 at
Calvary Chapel in McMinnville.

L. Bailey
Former Newberg resident Barbara Lorene Bailey died Feb. 12, 2006,
at a hospital in Vancouver, Wash. She was 76.
She was born June 20, 1929, to Jack and Charlotte (Vaughn) Kinney.
Her father preceded her in death when she was 4 months old. Her
stepfather, Walter Pawelski, helped raise her. She attended Newberg
grade schools and graduated from high school here.
On Jan. 4, 1948, she married James Bailey at Newberg Methodist
Church. They lived in Lincoln City and later moved to Netarts. She
worked in grocery stores, including the Newberg Safeway. In 1956,
she and her husband moved to Stevenson, Wash., where they built and
operated the Dairy Freeze. They sold the business in 1970. The
retired to North Bonneville, Wash., and later to Carson, Wash.,
where she was living at the time of her death.
She enjoyed bowling and going to national bowling tournaments. She
enjoyed traveling to Reno, Nev., and watching dog and horse races.
She was a member of Daughters of the Nile, a past president of
Skamania County Fair Board and a past city councilor in North
Bonneville.
Survivors include: husband Jim of Carson; sons, Mike of Clackamas
and Jim of Carson; daughters, Lorinda Southard of Webb City, Mo.,
and Sharon Bailey of Vancouver, Wash.; sisters Virginia Dvorak and
Tobi Young of Newberg; nine grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather Jack Kinney
and brother Donald Kinney.
Private committal was at Riverview Abbey Mausoleum in Portland. A
celebration of live will be held at a later time for friends and
family.

Walter ‘Skeeter’ L. Brown
Sheridan resident Walter “Skeeter” L. Brown, who has family in
Newberg, died Feb. 18, 2006, at Good Samaritan Medical Center in
Portland. He was 72.
He was born March 9, 1933, to Durward and Laura (McQueen) Brown in
Gober, Texas. He was raised in Oklahoma, moving to Delano, Calif.,
in 1943. He moved in 1964 to Coulee Dam, Wash. He worked on the
construction of the third power plant at the Grand Coulee Dam; he
drove a belly dumper. He served in the Air Force as an aircraft
refueler during the Korean War.
He married Barbara Sylvester on Sept. 24, 1963, in Fullerton,
Calif. In 1971, they moved to Bellvue and in 1973 to McMinnville. He
drove trucks for Cascade Steel. They owned and operated S & B Stake
Mill, S & B Landscaping, S & B Construction and S & B Hotshot
Company in McMinnville. He moved to Whiteson in 1996 and to Sheridan
in 2003.
He enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, fishing, dancing and riding
all-terrain vehicles. He was a past member of the American Legion
and the Elks. He was a member of the Willamina Free Methodist
Church.
Survivors include: sons, Joseph Medeiros of McMinnville, Larry of
Delano and Barry of Sheridan; daughters, Janice Moss of Newberg,
Anna Redl and Michelle Miller of Sheridan, and Judy Brown of
Bakersfield, Calif.; sister Jonelle Hopp of McMinnville; 25
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, in 2005; son, Bruce;
and brothers, D.B., Kenneth and Charles.

Newberg resident Charlie William Yancey died Feb. 18, 2006, at
Newberg Care Home. He was 94.
He was born Oct. 16, 1911, to J.S. and Emma (Glaspy) Yancey in Ada,
Okla. He was raised and educated in Oklahoma. He moved to Oregon in
1935 and settled in Albany, where he worked for many years for the
U.S. Bureau of Mines. He moved to Newberg in 1988.
He enjoyed woodworking, crafts, rock collecting and gardening. He
was a member of the Newberg Church of God.
Survivors include: wife Vivian of Newberg; sons, Charlie of
Medford, Robert of Lebanon and Gary of Bend; stepsons, Vincent Cook
and Wayne Cook, both of Newberg; sister Dora Pierce of Yercha,
Calif.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eunice, in 1983,
brother Frank and sister Dora.

Clarence D. Langer
Sherwood resident Clarence Dean Langer Sr. died Feb. 17, 2006, at a
Tigard nursing home. He was 93.
He was born April 19, 1912, to Ferdinand and Gertrude (Brauner)
Langer in Sherwood. He graduated in 1930 from Tigard High School. He
lived and worked on the family farm, which was founded in 1879 and
remains in the family today. On Aug. 20, 1944, he married Lillian
Underwood in Sherwood. He drove bus for Tigard schools.
The Langer family donated several pieces of property on which the
Hopkins School, Langer Park and St. Francis Catholic Church set
today. He was a founding father of Sherwood Plaza, and both he and
his wife assisted with many changes to Six Corners and its
developments.
He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood,
Beaverton Elks Lodge for 43 years, and the Agriculture Service
Committee for Washington County. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include: wife, Lillian of Sherwood; sons, Clarence Jr. of
Sherwood, Gary of Tigard and Steve of McMinnville; sister Margie
Abts of Portland; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and
numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brother Wallace and sister Gloria
Cereghino.

Myrtle J. King
Former Newberg resident Myrtle Jeanette King died Feb. 12, 2006.
She was 82.
She was born July 13, 1923, to Ole and Petra Storlie in Ralph, S.D.
Her parents had immigrated from Norway in the late 1800s. She worked
at Fort Vancouver’s Barnes Veterans Hospital, where she met Walter
King. They were married March 19, 1945, after a five-week courtship.
They lived in Newberg while he went to what is now George Fox
University. For a time he was also an associate pastor at West
Chehalem Friends Church. She worked as a cook at Friendsview Manor
and Nap’s in Newberg, as well as the Clark County Holiness
Association Camp, Tualatin Hospital in Hillsboro and Twin Rocks
Friends Camp in Rockaway. She also lived in Bend and Poulsbo, Wash.
She was a member of the First Friends Church in Vancouver, Wash.,
and was active in the women’s missionary group and the regional
group for the Northwest Friends church. She acted as president of
both groups at various times in her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Selmar, Henry,
Pete, Norman, Bill and Bud; and sisters, Signey Crevier, Palma Blume,
Edith Johnson and Vi Disbrow.
Survivors include: daughters, Shirley Tunsen of Spokane, Sharon
Sullivan of Federal Way, Wash., and Linda Edwards of Vancouver; son,
Bill King of Port Orchard, Wash.; 11 grandchildren and 17
great-grandchildren.

where her husband, a World War II veteran, was buried.

Newberg resident Linda Marie Sasse died Feb. 8, 2006, in Newberg.
She was 57.
She was born Feb. 14, 1948, to Ernest and Lucille (Johnson) Annas
in Portland. She attended Atkinson Grade School and Franklin High
School. In 1964, the family moved to Tigard, where she graduated
high school in 1966. She worked at Tektronix, where she met Don
Sasse. They were married on Dec. 15, 1967, at St. Mark’s Lutheran
Church in Portland. They later settled in Sherwood, where she worked
for many years in the Sherwood School District. They lived most
recently in Newberg.
She enjoyed fishing, quilting, collecting antiques and spending
time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include: husband Donald of Newberg; son Troy of Newberg;
daughter Tammy Johnson of Newberg; grandchildren, Junior and Lillie;
parents, Ernest and Lucille Annas of Newberg; brothers, Ray Annas of

Newberg resident Elizabeth “Betty” L. Kerr died Jan. 26, 2006. She
was 81.
She was born Dec. 30, 1924, to Henry and Sara (Kosta) Schmidt in
Leipzig, N.D. She graduated from Southern State Teachers College in
South Dakota. On Jan. 11, 1948, she married Rolland Kerr Sr. They
honeymooned in Oregon and never returned to South Dakota. They made
their home in Willamina. She taught school there for a few years
before moving to Newberg. She taught elementary school in the
Newberg School District until she retired in 1986.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, canning, reading,
needlepoint and raising her family on their farm in the Springbrook
area.
Survivors include: husband, Rolland; sons, Ross and Rolland Jr.;
brother Kermit Schmidt; and granddaughters, Kayla and Danielle Kerr.
She was preceded in death by son Gregory in 1995.

Newberg resident Charles Lloyd Paetel died Jan. 31, 2006, while
vacationing in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 78.
He was born as Charles Stryker on June 1, 1927, in Portland and was
adopted as a small child by the Paetel family. He attended Tigard
High School and Reed College. He also served in the Navy. He spent
50 years as a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 290. He
married Elizabeth “Betty” Wagenblast in 1965.
He was a member of the Pacific City Ramblers RV group, the Nehalem
River Sports Campground and the Sherwood Elks. He lived in the
Newberg and Wilsonville areas since 1969.
Survivors include: wife Elizabeth of Newberg; stepchildren, Mary
Hochstetler, George Wagenblast, Sheila Vertrees and Pam Patterson;
sisters, Margaret Dombrowsky of Arlington, Texas, and Dorothy
Roderick of Libertyville, Ill.
He was preceded in death by stepfather Henry Paetel.

Carl E. Withers
Carl E. Withers of Hopewell, who graduated from Newberg High
School, died Feb. 5, 2006, at Gibson Creek Assisted Living in Salem.
He was 94.
He was born Aug. 10, 1911, to Daniel and Zelpha (Snider) Withers in
Macdoel, Calif. He attended grade school in Colville, Wash., and
graduated from Newberg High School in 1929.
He married Miriam Eskildsen on Jan. 1, 1942, in Macdoel. He served
in the Navy during World War II and was attached to the Marines as a
medic in the South Pacific. After the war, he moved to Salem.
He moved in 1950 to Hopewell, where he has since resided. He worked
on bridge maintenance for the state highway department. He retired
in 1975, but continued working on his farm.
He enjoyed golfing, gardening and sports.
Survivors include: sons, Stephen of Salem, David of Tualatin and
Daniel of Gresham; brother Homer of Portland; sister Hannah Lenker
of Staunton, Va.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1997.
A service was held Feb. 9 at the Chapel of Macy and Son Funeral
Directors in McMinnville. Pastor Jim Peterson officiated. Private

N. Richardson
Former Dundee resident Belva Nyoma Richardson died Jan. 31, 2006,
due to complications from diabetes. She was 72.
She was born July 15, 1933, and raised in Dundee. She enjoyed
working with animals.
Survivors include: sons, Tony and Tim; daughter Tresa Richardson of
Sheridan; nephews, Bill, Mike, Dennis and Craig; and niece Pam
Shirts.

Tucker
Former Newberg resident Emma Lee (Strickland) Tucker died Feb. 2,
2006. She was 94.
She was born Nov. 5, 1911, in Tussy, Okla. She graduated from
Duncan High School. She moved west with her family in 1941 and
settled on a farm in Newberg in 1945.
She was chosen Newberg Mother of the Year in 1953. In 1967, she
moved to Beaverton to work at Tektronix.
After retirement, she moved to the King City and Highland areas,
where she was active in fund-raising and community activities.
She enjoyed sewing for others and was a professional seamstress.
She also enjoyed traveling with friends and playing cards.
Survivors include: sons, Frank, Tommy and James; daughter Wilda
Haight; brother Jess Strickland; sister Wanda Little; 11
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at

Clara C. Blanchard
Clara Coffin Blanchard, who has family in Newberg, died Feb. 3,
2006, at her daughter’s home in Dallas. She was 83.
She was born Oct. 20, 1922, to William and Anna (Johnson) Coffin in
Downey, Idaho, where she attended high school. She married William
Cottam in October 1939 in Preston, Idaho. They lived in Malad City,
Idaho, and in 1954 moved to McMinnville. They moved to a farm near
Lafayette and lived there 37 years. She and her husband divorced.
She worked for Swift and Company in McMinnville and Pilgrim Turkey
Packers in Salem.
She married Leon Blanchard in April 1970 at the Idaho Falls Temple
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They lived in
Lafayette and Dayton. She and her husband served as missionaries
from 1979 to 1981 in Harrisburg, Pa. She worked in the Seattle and
Portland temples for 10 years.
Survivors include: daughters, Myrna Pendergraft and Teena Fergus of
Dayton, Janet Loerts of Dallas, Daneice Blanchard of Carlton, Tamara
Thomas of Salem, Janice Kelly and Beth Marriott of Portland, and

Lifelong St. Paul resident and former mayor David Claude Smith died
Feb. 3, 2006. He was 77.
He was born Sept. 11, 1928, in Portland. He married Elaine Smith in
October 1954 in St. Paul. He farmed hops and row crops. He served in
the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Elks Lodge
and of the St. Paul Rodeo Association. He was a member of St. Paul
Catholic Church.
Survivors include: wife Elaine of St. Paul; daughters, Sally
Johnston of Dayton and Lynn Turpen of St. Paul; sons, David and Ben
Smith, both of St. Paul; brothers, James, Jack and Sam, all of St.

R. Fitzsimmons
Newberg resident Lloyd Robert Fitzsimmons died Jan. 31, 2006, at
Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 87.
He was born June 27, 1918, to Lloyde and Alice (Dametz) Fitzsimmons
in Enosdale, Kan. He lived his youth in Wichita, Kan., and graduated
from Haviland Friends Academy in Haviland, Kan. He attended Friends
University in Wichita.
In August 1938, he married Lillian Zarnecke in Elmdale, Kan. They
moved to Houston and later to Portland. They moved to Wilsonville in
1974, and then to Newberg, where they lived until his death.
He was employed by Hyster and then by Leupold & Stevens, before
joining the Product Engineering Company, from which he retired after
25 years. At that time, he and his wife bought a working 40-acre
farm on Ladd Hill near Wilsonville.
Survivors include: wife Lillian of Newberg; daughters, Margaret
Drahn of Redmond and Noreen Newman of Medford; five grandchildren
and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents, a stillborn daughter, and son
Charles.
A memorial service was held Feb. 4 at Sherwood Friends Church with

E. Gere
Newberg resident Raymond Everett Gere died Feb. 3, 2006, at
Chehalem Health and Rehabilitation Center in Newberg. He was 93.
He was born Sept. 7, 1912, to John and Pearl (Starr) Gere in
Letcher, S.D. He graduated from high school in 1930 at Agar, S.D. He
attended Iowa State College. During World War II, from 1941 to 1944,
he worked as an inspector for Cessna Aircraft in Wichita, Kan. He
moved to Iowa and farmed there from 1944 until 1950. He ran an
implement business in Perry, Iowa, until 1957. He moved in 1956 to
Curtis Heights, Calif., and managed the truck tire department for
Sears.
In 1967, he moved to Molalla, where he farmed until retirement in
1977. He moved again in 1992 to Newberg, where he lived until the
time of his death.

daughter’s horse events.

Mercedes Schwarz
Mercedes Schwarz died Feb. 2, 2006, at her home in Newberg. She was
80.
She was born Feb. 16, 1925, to Jose and Carmen (Pellecer) Vielman
in Guatemala. On Oct. 6, 1945, she married Gustavo “Gus” Schwarz in
Guatemala. They moved in 1955 to Los Angeles, where she worked as a
cardiopulmonary technician at Valley Presbyterian Hospital. In 1976,
they moved to Newberg. She worked for the Newberg hospital and later
as a baker for Springbrook School. Her husband preceded her in death
in May 2005.
She enjoyed knitting, baking and her family. She was a member of
the St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg.
Survivors include: sons, Richard and Gus Jr. of Newberg; daughters,
Patricia Lannutti of Philadelphia, Pa., and Marie Bates of Portland;
sisters, Jofefa and Teresa Zamora and Amparo Scheiber, all of
Guatemala, and Carmen Cortez of Los Angeles; nine grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Feb. 6 at St. Peter Catholic

Viola M. Blanchard
Newberg resident Viola M. Blanchard died Jan. 30, 2006, at home.
She was 86.
She was born Feb. 18, 1919, to Joseph and Mabel (Koeber) Kaufman in
Portland. She was raised in the Hillsboro area. She married Leonard
Blanchard in 1938. They lived in Garibaldi. She was widowed in 1939.
She later moved to Hillsboro, where she worked for Tektronix,
retiring after 23 years. She moved to the Nehalem Bay area and, in
2002, to Newberg, where she was living at the time of her death.
Survivors include: daughter, Darlene Mathis of Newberg; four
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 11 at First
Presbyterian Church in Newberg. Interment will be private.

Theodore J. Bernard
Theodore John “TJ” Bernard, who has family in St. Paul, died Jan.
31, 2006, in Elko, Nev. He was 55.
He was born Sept. 6, 1950, to Don and Jeannette (Kirk) Bernard in
Woodburn. He graduated from Mount Angel’s John. F. Kennedy High
School in 1969. He moved to Douglas, Wyo., in 1976 and worked for
Bear Creek Uranium Mine. In 1987 he moved to Battle Mountain, Nev.,
where he worked for McCoy Mines as a truck driver.
He enjoyed hunting in Paisley and exploring the Nevada desert for
artifacts and rocks. He enjoyed woodworking, making stained glass
and working on his 1967 Chevelle.
Survivors include: wife Lorene Bernard of Battle Mountain; son
Glenn of Denver; daughter Terri Petrjanos of St. Paul; brothers,
Michael of St. Paul, Stanley of Lynnwood, Wash., and David of
Mandan, N.D.; sister Nannette Fleck of Mount Angel and six
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 18 at St. Paul

Judith Marie Hoskins died Feb. 1, 2006, at her home in Newberg. She
was 55.
She was born July 9, 1950, to Robert and Virginia (Dufresne) Claire
in Anchorage, Alaska. She moved with her family to Port Angeles,
Wash., where she graduated from high school. She moved to San Diego,
Calif., where she began her banking career. She moved to Portland
area to be near family. She became a member of the Beaverton
Nazarene Church, where she met her husband. She married David
Hoskins on Oct. 12, 1980, in Beaverton.
She was part owner of Whimzze’s Gift and Scrapbooking Nook in
Beaverton. She worked for many years for U.S. Bank and at First
Federal Savings branches in McMinnville, Newberg and Carlton. She
attended Countryside Community Church in Sherwood.
She enjoyed scrap-booking and collecting Muffy and Beannie Babies.
Survivors include: husband David of Newberg; father Jim of
Beaverton; sons, Timothy of Simi Valley, Calif., and Daniel of
Newberg; daughters, Cynthia and Virginia, both of Newberg; brother
Robert Claire of Pensacola, Fla.; sister Maribeth Roberts of
Portland, and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Claire.

George E. Rarick
George Earl Rarick died Jan. 25, 2006, at Providence Newberg
Hospital. He was 74.
He was born Oct. 25, 1931, to Joe and Lily May (Turner) Rarick in
Grants Pass. At a young age he moved with this family to the Dundee
area. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1949. He served in
the Army during the Korean War. He returned to the Dundee area after
his discharge.
On March 26, 1954, he married J. Yvonne Smith in Vancouver, Wash.
They made their home in Portland, where he worked for Uniguard
Insurance. They then moved to Newberg, where he lived until his
death. He worked for A-dec Inc. for more than 25 years as a
supervisor of shipping and receiving. His wife preceded him in death
in July 1996.
He enjoyed sports, watching them on television and attending his
children and grandchildren’s events. He was a regular at J’s
Restaurant and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post
4015 of Newberg.
Survivors include: son Joe of Newberg; daughter Jacki Koehler of
Tualatin; brothers Jim of Newberg and Chuck of Goshen; seven
grandchildren; four nieces and four nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at
Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, with the Rev.
Gregg Selander officiating. Committal will follow at Dundee Pioneer

L. Barry
Former Newberg resident Albert L. Barry died of liver disease on
Jan. 13, 2006, in Pacific City. He was 73.
He was born May 28, 1933, to Lawerance and Alice (Hastings) Barry
in Salem. He was educated in Salem and served in the Navy. He worked
for K-line Trucking Inc., from which he retired. He worked for
Newberg Ready Mix for several years. He lived in Newberg from 1966
to 1998, when he moved to Pacific City, where he was living at the
time of his death.
He married Sue Ball on Jan. 31, 1960. She preceded him in death in
July 2005.
He enjoyed fishing, golfing, billiards and family activities.
Survivors include: daughter Tracie Raush of Pacific City; son Sean
of Newberg and grandchildren, Nick and Ashley Smith and Broc and
Tahtyona Barry.
He was preceded in death by son Travis in 2003.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Travel

Rosemary Youngman
Rosemary Youngman, who had family in Newberg, died Jan. 11, 2006,
at her home in Sherwood. She was 67.
She was born Jan. 4, 1939, in Jamaica Long Island, N.Y. She
graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Portland. She was a night
auditory for many area hotels. She lived in Oregon since 1974. Prior
to that she lived in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Frankfurt, Germany.
She enjoyed bowling, inside gardening, reading, trivia, classical
music, painting and art.
Survivors include: sons, Paul of Newberg and Timothy of Greenville,
S.C.; and brothers, Raymond Higgins of Denver and Michael Goggin of
Molalla.
No formal services will be held. Cremation is private.

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ E. Hinckley
Dundee resident Elizabeth Ellen Hinckley died Jan. 22, 2006, at
Chehalem Care Home. She was 86.
She was born July 24, 1919, to Cornelius and Pearl (Cassell) Bush
in Clifton, N.J. She was known to friends and family as Betty. She
married Hal Hinckley in 1940. In 2000, they moved to Dundee to be
near their daughter.
Survivors include: husband Hal of Dundee; daughter Jan Newhouse;
four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandchild.

Bunny M. Morrill
Bernadette “Bunny” Marie Morrill of Newberg died of cancer on Jan.
13, 2006. She was 62.
She was born Sept. 4, 1943, to Felix and Bertha Pelletier in
Albany. She graduated in 1962 from Albany Union High School (West).
In 1963 she married Michael Morrill of Albany. He served in the Navy
for 20 years, and they moved to several locations around the United
States as he took different assignments. While stationed at Parris
Island, she was a preschool teacher in the South Carolina public
school system.
She managed a small restaurant for a time. She later worked at Hand
in Hand Children’s Learning Center in Newberg, where she divided her
time between assisting the director and managing the kitchen and
cooking. Illness forced her retirement, after 12 years, in 2003.
She enjoyed spending time with family, visiting the Oregon coast,
embroidering, baking, finding or making gifts for her grandchildren,
and collecting Santa Clauses.
Survivors include: husband, Michael; daughters, Sandy Adams of
Yamhill and Malea Morrill of Prescott, Ariz.; grandchildren, Darci
Manning and Dylan and Drew Adams; brothers, Ray of Auburn, Wash.,
and Ed of Winthrop Minn.; and sister Dianna Hanson of Corvallis.

M. Howard
Hollis Marie Howard died Jan. 16, 2006, at her home in Newberg. She
was 87.
She was born March 3, 1918, to James and Emma (Feldzien) Bracelin
in St. Francis, Kan. She grew up and went to school in St. Frances.
In 1938, she married Harvey Stevens in Benkelman, Neb., and they
made their home in Kansas. In 1944 they moved to Portland, where he
worked in the shipyards. They later moved to McMinnville, where for
several years they owned and operated the Douglas Café.
After the couple divorced, she moved to Newberg in 1954. On Nov.
18, 1949, she married Albert “Gene” Howard in McMinnville. They
owned and operated the Quality Oil Gas Station, for which she did
the bookkeeping. They retired after 20 years. He preceded her in
death in March 1981.
She enjoyed volunteering at the Newberg Thrift Shop, as well as
playing cards and bingo with friends and family. She collected
glassware and dolls.
Survivors include: daughter Marolyn Erb of Newberg; stepdaughter
Kathleen Gessner of Torrance, Calif.; brothers, Rex of Carlton and
Don of Richmond, Calif.; sisters, Wanda Smith of Yuma, Colo., Joyce
Lamke of Burlington, Colo., and Katheryn Kuhlman of Goodlin, Kan.;
seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by siblings Harold, Pearl, Dorothy, Ray
and Warren.

Newberg resident Acenith Lois Ketchum died of natural causes on
Jan. 12, 2006, in Newberg. She was 100.
She was born Oct. 8, 1905, to George and Mary Parrish in Big Cabin,
Okla. She lived in Colorado and moved to Oregon in 1945, living in
Molalla. She later moved to Newberg, where she remained until her
death. She married J. Wayne Ketchum in 1925. He preceded her in
death in 1973.
Survivors include: daughters, Lois Lehman, Lottie Billings, Eulalia
Smith, Minerva Billings and Kathy Rimby; sons, James, Sherman and
Darrell; 31 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren and 22
great-great-grandchildren.

Lynn L. Holland
Newberg resident Lynne LeRoy Holland died Jan. 13, 2006, at a
McMinnville rehabilitation facility. He was 76.
He was born Sept. 1, 1929, to Delbert and Sedona (Jenkins) Holland
in Ramona, Calif., where he grew up and received his education. He
joined the Navy in February 1947 and worked as an interior
communications electrician, retiring from the military in 1971.
On Aug. 19, 1950, he married Anna Mae Asbjeld in Yuma, Ariz. The
couple moved their home and family from California to Illinois, to
South Carolina, and finally back to California following his
military assignments. In 1962, they moved to Hillsboro, where they
lived until 1974. They moved to a small farm near Newberg.
He worked for Sears Roebuck and Company as an appliance repairman
for 25 years until retirement. In 1991, he and his wife moved into
Newberg after she suffered a stroke. He was her caretaker for seven
years, until she preceded him in death in 1996.
He was a member of the Newberg V.F.W. and the Carlton Legion. He
enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as helping people.
Survivors include: daughters, Karen Holland and Phyllis Browne,
both of Newberg; son Wayne of Dallas; grandchildren, Stephanie
Strassner, Nathan Walker, Heather and Stephen Browne, Jennifer Frick
and Scott Holland; eight great-grandchildren and four nieces.
He was preceded in death by brother Milton and daughter Audrey
Walker.

Betty J. Blodgett
Newberg resident Betty J. Blodgett died Jan. 10, 2006, at a Newberg
care home. She was 92.
She was born Jan. 9, 1914, to Harold and Ethel (Ellenwood) Blake in
Spokane, Wash. She graduated from Spokane High School in 1932. For a
time, she worked for Spokane and Eastern Bank in Spokane. In 1935,
she moved to Portland and worked for General Motors Insurance
Exchange.
On Feb. 26, 1937, she married Robert Blodgett in Spokane. She
returned to work in 1946 when the couple made their home in Newberg;
she worked at Al’s Family Dining Restaurant. Her husband preceded
her in death in April 1980.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Newberg and
president of the McGuire Sisters National Fan Club. She enjoyed
providing transportation to those in need.
Survivors include: son, Allan Blodgett of Newberg; daughter,
Barbara Freeman of Newberg; grandchildren, Brian Love of Newberg and
Rick Love of Tigard; great-grandchildren, Laura, Jason, Jessica and
Kelsee Love; longtime friends Olive Robb and Carolann Heckathorne;
and several nieces and nephews.

Former Newberg resident Spc. Donald “Anthony” Wilder died Jan. 8,
2006, in Manheim, Germany. He was 21.
He was born July 7, 1984, in Portland. He graduated from Newport
High School in 2002. He joined the Army in May 2003 and served in
Iraq. His cause of death is unclear; the military is investigating
the matter, according to the Bateman Funeral Home.
He lived in Newberg, Hermiston and Seal Rock.
He enjoyed scuba diving. He was a member of Masons and the Newport
Boosters Club.
Survivors include: parents Tony and Diane Wilder of Seal Rock;
brother Harrison of Eugene; grandparents, Janet Wilder of Salem,
Dick and Audra Puhl of Tualatin, and Don and Brenda Tank of Oregon
City; and great-aunt, Roberta Rogers of Salem.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Harrison Wilder.

Dundee resident Larry E. Johnson died Jan. 7, 2006, in McMinnville.
He was 65.
He was born Jan. 22, 1940, in Wahpeton, N.D. He moved with his
family to the rural Newberg area, where he attended Rex Hill Grade
School through the sixth grade. The family moved to McMinnville,
where he finished the 11th grade.
He learned welding and worked at the Toledo Paper Mill and later
for Mellon Manufacturing.
He enjoyed fishing with his brother and friends.
Survivors include: son Mitchell of Newberg and brother Jay of
Newberg.

Robert Newton
Former Newberg resident Robert Newton died Dec. 9, 2005, at his
home in Camp Sherman. He was 79.
He was born Jan. 4, 1926, to Paul and Mary Fern (Baker) Newton in
Portland. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1944. He served
in the Army for two years. He graduted from Oregon State University
and he earned a master’s degree from the University of Oregon. He
worked as a school teacher and administrator. He married June Jensen
in August 1947.
Survivors include: wife, June; sons, Bill, Mike and Jeff;
daughters, Linda, Kathy, Peggy and Heidi; 18 grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Dec. 17 in Camp Sherman.

Allison
Newberg resident Opal Ruth Allison died Jan. 8, 2006, at a Newberg
care facility. She was 84.
She was born March 22, 1921, to Henry and Alsie (Jenkins) Roberts
in Meridian, Texas. On Feb. 8, 1941, she married Joe Allison. They
lived in Portales, N.M., before moving to Gold Hill in 1941. He
preceded her in death in 2004.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening and the
outdoors, spending many of her days on the Rogue River fishing. She
also enjoyed hunting and was a competitive marksman, winning many
awards.
Survivors include: son Dennis Allison of Camas, Wash.; daughters,
Jeanne Fawcett of Newberg and Beverly Rensfield of San Diego,
Calif.; sister Hermaleigh Vannoy of Lubbock, Texas; brother Clayton
Roberts of Lubbock, Texas; seven grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sister Zelma Adair.

Leah M. Severson
Newberg resident Leah May Severson died Jan. 1, 2006, at Providence
Newberg Hospital. She was 55.
She was born Feb. 25, 1950, to Kenneth and Jesslyn (Smith) Lewis in
Portland. She grew up and attended school in Newberg, graduating
from Newberg High School. She also graduated from beauty school. She
moved to Wyoming, where she resided for seven years. She moved to
Bend and to McMinnville before resettling in Newberg. She married
Jay Maxwell in 1990 in Lafayette.
She enjoyed playing the organ and piano. She also enjoyed the
outdoors, fishing and horse-riding. Her family said she had a quick
wit and always wore a smile.
Survivors include: husband Jay of Newberg; sons, Jessie of
Hillsboro and Justin of Carlton; brothers, Kenneth Lewis Jr. of
Newberg, Donald Lewis of Albany, Michael Lewis of Greybull, Wyo.,
and Joe Lewis of Lafayette; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, James
Lewis.

Marvin
M. Hutchens
Newberg native Marvin Monroe Hutchens died Dec. 29, 2005, at
Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 72.
He was born Dec. 22, 1933, to Alfred and Leona (Randel) Hutchens in
Newberg. He grew up and attended Sherwood and Portland Schools. On
Aug. 29, 1952, he married Jessie Cox in Portland. They moved to
Olympia, Wash., for two years. He joined the Army in April 1953
during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash.,
and they returned to Portland after his honorable discharge in April
1955. A year later the family moved to Sherwood, then to Newberg. In
1961 they moved to Dundee. They made the Red Hills their home until
1967, when they returned to Newberg where they have since resided.
He worked many years as warehouse manager of a mobile home and
travel-trailer sales business. He also managed several rock bands.
He often read the Bible. He enjoyed gardening and the beach.
Survivors include: sons, Rick of Newberg, Dale of Wilsonville, and
Dan and Joe of Carlton; brother Leslie of McMinnville; sisters,
Laurel Spensor and Laverne Myers, both of Carlton; 11 grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, brother Charles and
sister Clelas.
A cryptside service with committal was held Jan. 5 at Valley View
Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Newberg.

E. De Kar
Newberg resident Mildred E. De Kar died Jan 1, 2006, at a care
center in Newberg. She was 84.
She was born Sept. 18, 1921, to Howard and Hilda (Launt) Chandler
in Binghamton, N.Y. On June 10, 1939, she married Joseph De Kar at
St. Cyril Methodist Church in Binghamton. They moved to Newberg in
1984 from California. She retired from IBM after working there 15
years as a secretary. After moving to Newberg, she worked as church
secretary for St. Peter Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
She enjoyed playing bridge, crocheting, knitting, reading and
spending time with family.
Survivors include: son Rodney of Dundee; daughter Sally Page; five
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and three
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Bernice Beers, three days
prior.

Alta M.
Burnett
Rural Newberg resident Alta Mae Burnett died Jan. 3, 2006, at a
Newberg care facility. She was 97.
She was born Dec. 16, 1908, to Harry and Ada (Mudgett) South in
Willow Lake, S.D. At 5, she moved with her family to a cattle ranch
in Montana. In 1927, the family moved to Portland, where she worked
at Albertina Kerr Baby Home and attended Cascade Bible Institute.
On June 20, 1935, she married Harvey Burnett and moved to a farm
south of Newberg. He preceded her in death in 1959.
About 1961, she went to work as a cook for Friendsview Manor, where
she worked 41 years. She moved there herself in 1981.
She enjoyed her church family, gardening and sewing, especially
making quilts. She took many car trips, and enjoyed trips to Europe,
Israel and Hawaii.
Her lone survivor is her son, George Burnett.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Esther, at age 4.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Attrell’s
Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, with pastor Shaun McNay
officiating. Chapel viewing and visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30
p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.

Leroy F. Fettig
Newberg resident Leroy F. Fettig died Dec. 29, 2005, at Providence
Newberg Hospital. He was 66.
He was born May 12, 1939, to Sebastain and Magdelia (Mock) Fettig
in Darby, Mont. He attended schools in Montana, Washington, Coos Bay
and Newberg. He and his brothers LaVern and Don joined the Marines
in 1957. After the service, he returned to Newberg and married
Barbara Crown. He worked as a plumber with his brother LaVern. They
worked in the area many years.
After retiring, he spent much time hunting and fishing around the
state.
Survivors include: twin brother LaVern; brother Don of Lafayette;
sisters, Margert Foster and Ranay Hoffman of Tigard, Elvira Peters
of Newberg and Claireann Bowlin of Dayton; daughters, Juile
Hofstetter of Netarts and Kathy Rocca of Bonita, Calif.; grandsons,
Robert Hofstetter and Philip Rocca; granddaughters, Nicole, Kelly
and Jayd Rocca; and 13 nephews and 13 nieces.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter
Catholic Church in Newberg.
