Doreen D. Tautfest
Former Newberg resident Doreen Delores Tautfest died Jan. 21, 2004, at a
Brawley, Calif., hospital. She was 64.
She was born July 27, 1939, to William and Esther (Knoell) Billeter in Dixon,
Neb. Her family moved to Oregon, living in Dallas and Sheridan before settling in Newberg
in 1951. She graduated from Newberg High School of 1957. She worked for a short time in
Salem for State Farm Insurance. She married Wayne Tautfest on May 9, 1959, in Newberg.
They made Newark, Calif., their home. She worked at American Can Co. in the San Francisco
area. In 1963 they returned to Newberg, where she worked at Allen Machinery as a computer
operator for 29 years. Her last move was to La Pine.
She was active with Eastern Star and enjoyed her grandchildren and traveling.
Survivors include: husband Wayne of La Pine; sons, Donald of Tigard and Casey
of Dundee; daughter Terri Hopes of Portland; sisters, Dorothy Phipps of Salem and Maryln
Bennett of Gladstone; and five grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Wednesday in Newberg with Pastor Steve Estrem
officiating. A concluding service followed at Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Metta A. Everest
Metta Aileen Everest died Jan. 19, 2004, at her Newberg home. She was 87.
She was born April 21, 1916, to Charles and Metta (Morris) Reed in Burns. She
was raised on a hay ranch outside of Burns, which is now part of the Malheur Bird Reserve.
She graduated from high school in Burns, then attended George Fox University. She married
Glenn Everest on Nov. 13, 1937, in Newberg. They made their home in Portland and later
Tigard. He preceded her in death in May 1997.
She was a member of the Reedwood Friends Church.
Survivors include: son Joe of Orland, Calif.; daughter Diana Smith of Sandy;
sisters, Marjorie Higgins of Anacortes, Wash., and Rayberta Ray of Louisville, Ky.;
grandchildren, Kari VanNatta, Ryan Everest, and Jason and Blake Smith; and
great-grandchildren, Anthony and Joey.
A funeral service was held Saturday in Newberg. A concluding service and
vault interment followed a Newberg Friends Cemetery.
Lillian M. Wozniak
Lillian Martha Wozniak of Sherwood died Jan. 21, 2004. She was 77.
She was born June 2, 1926, to Harry and Clara (Holstein) Goedel on a small
farm in Wadena, Minn., in the midst of the Great Depression. When her father died, the
farm was lost and the family moved to Oregon in search of better times. She helped in the
family restaurant in Sherwood, where she attended high school and graduated as class
salutatorian. She married Stephen Wozniak at the end of the war in November 1945 in
Sherwood. He preceded her in death in 1986.
Survivors include: sons, Steven of Newberg, John of Tigard and Edward of
Sherwood; daughter Lori Carson of Sherwood; sister Velma Spath of Renton, Wash.; nine
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers Gilbert and Harry, and sister Margot.
A funeral service was held Sunday in Sherwood. Committal followed at St. Paul
Lutheran Cemetery.

Esther H. Miller
Esther Henrietta Miller died Jan. 25, 2004, at a Newberg care facility. She
was 85.
She was born Sept. 4, 1918, to William and Gertrude (Sevier) Hicinbothem in
Oregon City. She moved to Stevenson, Wash., where she received her early education. She
moved to the Newberg area and married Robert Orman Miller on March 15, 1937, in Stevenson,
Wash. They moved in 1957 to Pendleton, returning to Newberg in 1965. He preceded her in
death in October 2001.
Survivors include: sons, Carl and Jack Miller, both of Dundee;
daughters, Beverly Turpen of Newberg, Earlene Futter of Dundee, Susan Wilkins of Newberg
and Jill Miller of Newberg; 18 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren and 20
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters.
A graveside service was held Tuesday in Newberg.

Erasmo G. Barrera
Erasmo Richard Garza Barrera of Newberg died from complications
of diabetes on Jan. 17, 2004, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 66.
He was born April 10, 1937, to Enrique and Anastacia (Garza) Barrera in
Asherton, Texas. He moved to the Newberg area at a young age. A union member, he worked in
construction throughout Oregon and Washington. He married Sylvia Holman on Oct. 4, 1954,
in Carrizo Springs, Texas. They made their home in Newberg in 1955. She preceded him in
death in May 2000. He was a part of several large construction projects, including a water
treatment plant in Pasco, Wash., a stadium at Stanford University, and also on Oregon
Health and Sciences University.
He enjoyed the outdoors, namely the Oregon Coast. He enjoyed camping,
fishing, hunting, crabbing and clamming. His family said he was a devoted father who
enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include: sons, Philip, Erasmo Jr., Michael, Tracy and Kelly, all of
Newberg; daughter Linda Farrell of Poway, Calif.; sister Olivia Martinez of St. Paul;
brothers, Leonard of Ohio, Louie of Portland, Eloy Barrera of Las Vegas, Edward of St.
Paul, Enrique of Aurora, Juan of Gervais, Rick of St. Paul and David of Sherwood; 13
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 31 nieces and nephews and 43 great-nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter and his parents.
A funeral service was held Thursday in Newberg at Attrells Newberg
Chapel with pastors Ralph Burkett and Eloy Barrera officiating. Committal followed at
Valley View Memorial Park.

Arthur Cole
Arthur Cole of Sherwood died Jan. 18, 2004, at a Portland hospital. He was
87.
He was born Dec. 12, 1916, to Charles and Elizabeth (Raitz) Cole in Port
Angeles, Wash. He moved to Portland at a young age, attending schools in North Portland
and graduating from Jefferson High School in 1932. He served in the Civilian Conservation
Corp and worked in the wholesale candy business. He enlisted in the Marines in 1942 and
served during World War II, where he was injured. He returned to Portland and started
Arthur Cole Candy, which is still being operated by the family. He married Lorraine Harvey
in September 1948 in Sherwood, where they made their home and lived for 42 years.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, boating and local casinos. His family said he
was a devoted father and grandfather and a great storyteller.
Survivors include: sons, Walter of Portland and Jim of Sherwood; daughter
Elizabeth Karleskint of Portland; grandchildren, Robert Cole, Patricia Miller, Wendy
Baughman and Steven Cole; eight great-grandchildren and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Lucille and Corrine.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Attrells
Newberg Chapel with Pastor Ken Vanden Hoek officiating. Committal is private at Willamette
National Cemetery.

Frances C. White
Frances Carey White of Woodburn died Jan. 15, 2004. She was 91.
She was born May 7, 1912, in Portland. She graduated from Lincoln High
School. She worked as an invoice clerk for M and M Lumber Co. in Portland before moving in
1950 to Tigard, where she owned and operated a Mode-O-Day dress shop. She married William
in 1937. He preceded her in death in 1988.
Survivors include: daughter Cheryl Weber; son Bill; five grandchildren and 10
grandchildren.

Agnes A. Cooper
Agnes Amelia Cooper died Jan. 14, 2004, at a Portland hospital. She was 99.
She was born Feb. 6, 1904, to Petrus and Amelia (Anderson) Lundquist in
Lindsborg, Kan. She moved with her family to the Sherwood area, started school in nearby
Cipole and finished high school in Portland. After graduating from Girls Polytechnic, she
trained and became a Registered Nurse.
She worked as a nurse for the Red Cross, various hospitals and did private
nursing care. She also worked in service for to the Blood Bank, traveling throughout
Oregon, including some state prisons, to help with blood donations. She married Milford
Cooper in 1928. They lived in Yakima, Hood River and Marshfield before settling in
Portland in 1937. He preceded her in death on March 28, 1968.
She was active at Woodland Park Chapel. She enjoyed teaching Sunday
school crafts and making special items for children. For many years she provided the
floral arrangements for her church using flowers from her garden.
Survivors include: daughter Betty McCoy of Fremont, Calif.; sister Rose
Schnell of Portland; grandchildren, Terry and Judy McCoy; and great-grandchildren, Matthew
and Logan McCoy
Preceding her in death are sister Evelyn; brothers Harold, Leroy and Melvin;
and grandson Randy McCoy.
A funeral service was held Saturday at the Rose City Cemetery Chapel in
Portland with Pastor Arnold Motz officiating. Interment followed at Rose City Cemetery in
Portland.

James W. McAdams
James Woodrow McAdams of Newberg died Jan. 15, 2004, in his home. He was 77.
He was born June 1, 1926, to Ted and Mary McAdams in Sherman County, Kan. He
attended Newberg High School and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. His
work included management positions for Cornet and Albertson stores; owner/manager of
Bowl-A-Way Inc., a nine-lane bowling alley in Newberg; lineman construction of high
voltage transmission lines and as a journeyman lineman for PGE and PP&L. He returned
to Newberg in 2001 to be near family and friends.
He played Santa Claus for kids in Clatsop County. He had a jovial manner and
was interested in the people and events around him, his family said.
Survivors include: daughters, Sherrie Bell and Kathie McAdams; sisters, Ruth
Jackson and Frances Svendsen; and brothers, Lloyd, George, Harry and John.
He was preceded in death by wife, Winifred, in February 1993; and sister
Stella Ring.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Jan. 25 at Newberg Free Methodist
Church.

Florence L. Lienard
Former Newberg resident Florence Lee Lienard died Jan. 10, 2004, in
McMinnville. She was 101.
She was born June 3, 1902, to George and Nettie (Cooke) Lee in Cincinnati,
Ohio. She moved with her family in 1906 to Newberg, where she graduated from high school.
She graduated from Pacific College (now George Fox University) and at the time of her
death was the oldest living of its alumni. She taught elementary school in Carlton for two
years.
She married C. Floyd Lienard on May 31, 1927, in Newberg. They moved to
Tacoma and later to Ridgefield, Wash., where she was a substitute teacher until 1949. Her
husband preceded her in death in April 1960.
She relocated to Portland in 1960 and worked for the Portland Public Schools
as an elementary school secretary. From 1971 to 1998 she moved all over Oregon, including
a six-year stay in Newberg, and finally settled in McMinnville.
She was involved in the church, including her membership in the Presbyterian
Ladies Group and serving as a district officer while attending the Presbyterian Church. A
great storyteller to her grand- and great-grandchildren, she was family oriented, her
family said. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles. She opened her home to
exchange teachers and doctors from Japan for many years.
Survivors include: son George of Shelton, Wash.; daughters, Edith Dudley of
Dayton and Ruth Heiser of Boise; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three
great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were brothers Charles, Walter, Arthur and Harold, and
sisters Louisa and Ruth Lee.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today (Saturday) in the Dayton
Christian Church with Pastor Kyle French officiating. Private Committal will be at
Riverview Cemetery in Portland.

William R. Ellis
William Ralph Ellis died Jan. 8, 2003, in Newberg. He was 56.
He was born Nov. 9, 1947, to Ralph and Audrey (Dillon) Ellis in San
Francisco, where he received his early education. He graduated from El Camino High School
in 1965. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1966 and served in Germany for two
years. Upon his return in 1968, he operated his own leather trade, making leather products
for the next five years.
He survived an attack while he was the operator of a cab, as well as a
motorcycle accident. He worked as a counselor for 12 years, operating his own counseling
business, New Options, for five years.
He was a devoted father and grandfather and a wonderful storyteller with a
great sense of humor, his family said. He attended Joyful Servant Lutheran Church in
Newberg. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, was an airplane pilot and a skydiver who complete 15
parachute jumps.
Survivors include: son Joseph Cowles of San Ramon, Calif.; daughter Sandra
Smiley of Castro Valley, Calif.; brother Stephen of South San Francisco; sisters, Lee
Emmett of Pleasanton, Calif., Linda Bomben of San Jose, Calif., and Leslie Fochetti of
Redwood City, Calif.; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephew.
A memorial service was held Wednesday in Newberg.
Richard L. Socia
Richard Lee Socia of Newberg died Jan. 9, 2004. He was 73.
He was born Dec. 19, 1930, to Gerald and Madeline Socia in St. Clair, Mich.
He earned a high school diploma and attended college for two years. Marion Christian was
his bride and they remained married for 50 years. He served in the Army for 20 years. He
lived in Newberg for 15 years.
Survivors include: wife Marion of Newberg; daughters, Cherie Socia and Cindy
Cooper of Newberg; son Steve of La Center, Wash.; brother Gerry of Michigan; 10
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sons David and Timothy.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Society. No service was
held.
Vitino N. Piscitelli
Vitino N. Piscitelli died Jan. 5, 2004, at his Newberg home. He was 35.
He was born July 7, 1968, to Pasquale and Maria (Cortese) Piscitelli in
Portland. He received his early education in Portland and graduated from Wilson High
School. He distributed The Oregonian in McMinnville for more than 10 years. In 1986 he
moved to Newberg.
He was a loving father and an easygoing person, his family said. He was an avid basketball
and football sports fan.
Survivors include: son Luke; daughters, Leicie and Alyssa; father Pasquale of
Newberg; and brothers, Frank, Nino and Marco.
A rosary service was held Jan. 7 in Newberg. A Mass of Christian Burial was
held Jan. 8 at St. Peter Catholic Church. Committal followed at Riverview Abbey in
Portland.

Ruth C. Erickson
Ruth C. Erickson of Newberg died Jan. 12, 2004. She was 91.
She was born Feb. 21, 1912, to A.L. and Minnie Morland in Portland. She
graduated from Jefferson High School. She attended Behnke Walker Business College and
substituted for one of her teachers on temporary leave. She worked as a comptometer
operator for wholesale hardware and grocery companies. In the aftermath of Dec. 7, 1941,
Pearl Harbor, she joined a team in the Portland area compiling an inventory of auto and
truck tires as part of the war effort. She married E. Edwin Erickson in 1936. The moved to
Seattle in 1942 and divorced in 1968. She moved to Newberg in 1977.
She enjoyed gardening, doing yard work and arranging flowers. Her yard in
Seattle was pictured in Sunset Magazine. She dedicated her last years to writing a family
history.
Survivors include: sister Betty Pietka of Eugene; brother Robert Morland of
Newberg; niece Alice Ochse of Dundee and numerous other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: parents A.L. and Minnie; sisters, Helen Ruby
(as an infant), Eunice Krieg and Alice Glennon Petroff.
A private burial will be held in the future at Rose City Cemetery.

Patricia A. Wixon
Patricia Ann Wixon of Dundee died Jan. 12, 2004, of respiratory failure. She
was 65.
She was born Jan. 16, 1938, to Daniel and Margaret Newman in Kelso, Wash. She
married Donald Wixon on March 29, 1961, in Stevenson, Wash. They moved to Portland in 1971
and to Dundee in 1976. He preceded her in death in 1999.
She was a founding member of the Grace Baptist Church of Newberg, where she
was active for more than 15 years. She was also active in the Grace Baptist Church in
Carlton for seven years.
Survivors include: daughters, Diane Newman of Everett, Wash., Kathy Cooper of
Olympia, Donna Jantz of Dundee, Tracey Miranda of Austin, Texas, and Lisa Wixon of Dundee;
16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; parents Daniel and Margaret of Longview, Wash.;
brothers, Michael of Longview and Daniel of Lenoir, N.C.; and sister Sandra Williams of
Longview, Wash.

Frances E. Peek
Former Dundee resident Frances E. Peek died Jan. 6, 2004, at Good Samaritan
Hospital in Portland. She was 87.
She was born Aug. 4, 1916, in Shelby, Iowa. She married Newberg physician
L.H. Peek on Oct. 8, 1937. They lived in Newberg and Dundee from 1947 until her husband
preceded her in death in 1986. She moved to Cascade Park retirement home in Woodburn,
where she was secretary of the residents council and chairwoman of its hospitality
committee.
She was active in the Methodist Church of Newberg, in the local PEO chapter
and in the school activities of her three children. She was an avid reader and enjoyed
camping with her daughter Joan.
Survivors include: son, Bill Peek of Beaverton; daughters, Joan Peek of
Medford and Virginia Reno of Washington D.C.; grandchildren Larry and Laura Peek of
Anchorage, Alaska, Carl and Kristy Peek of Beaverton and Phil Reno of Kent, Ohio;
great-grandson Benjamin Peek of Anchorage; and sister Florence Smith of Story City, Iowa.
Georgina M. Duba
Georgina M. Duba of McMinnville died Dec. 22, 2003, in McMinnville. She was
80.
She was born Nov. 13, 1923.
Lester E. Doty
Lester Earl Doty of Newberg died Jan. 2, 2004, in Newberg. He was 93.
He was born April 11, 1910, to Clarence and Agnes (Davis) Doty in Willamina.
He grew up in Portland. He started his career with lumber mills at 14 years old when he
helped build a sawmill at the mouth of Devils Lake. He was 16 when he married Sylvia
Johnson on Oct. 26, 1926. They settled in Portland, where for 20 years he worked at the
Jones Lumber Mill. He later owned and operated three mills, one on Beaver Creek Road that
he sold. He also worked for the Fall Creek Lumber Co. mill near Estacada. He rounded out
his career as superintendent of the Portland Lumber Mills, where he was included in a
television special about the mill.
During his career he developed a log turner and an attachment to make cedar
barking practicable.
His wife preceded him in death on April 29, 1996. He married sister-in-law
Frances Johnson of Newberg. She died on March 30, 2003.
Survivors include: daughter-in-law Carole Doty of Othello, Wash.; grandson
Douglas Doty of Seattle; granddaughter Morgana Manley of Maple Valley, Wash.; stepdaughter
Anita Strycker of Grants Pass; stepsons, LaMonte Johnson of Castaic, Calif., and Arthur
Johnson of Newberg; seven great-grandchildren; one niece and five nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; sons,
Douglas and Paul; grandson Eric Doty; and brother Clarence.
A memorial service was held Saturday in Newberg.

Paul T. Wilkinson
Paul Thomas Wilkinson II died Jan. 4, 2004, at his home in Dundee. He was 9.
He was born Aug. 20, 1994, to Paul and Joyce (Fendall) Wilkinson in
Wilmington, Ohio. He lived in Kansas and North Carolina before moving to Dundee three
years ago. He attended Dundee Elementary School.
He enjoyed riding in the family van and being with his brother and sisters.
He enjoyed music and his Hot Wheels collection. His family described him as a cheerful
young boy who enjoyed life even though he was limited by Cerebral Palsy all of his life.
Survivors include: parents, Paul of Blanchester, Ohio, and Joyce Wilkinson of
Dundee; brother Christopher of Dundee; sisters, Kaitlyn and Jocelyn of Dundee;
grandparents, Lon and Raelene Fendall of Newberg and Paul and Bev Wilkinson of Midland,
Ohio; great-grandparents, Clayton and Dorothy Barnes of Caldwell, Idaho, and Ida Wilkinson
of Ohio; uncle and aunt, Mark and Dixie Fendall; and cousins, Trever and Levi.

Jewel E. Watson
Jewel Evelyn Watson of Martins Mill, Texas, died Jan. 6, 2004, in Grand
Saline, Texas. She was 84.
She was born June 29, 1919, to Albert Frazier and Emma Rachael Turner in Van
Zandt County in Texas. She moved to Dallas in 1941 and returned to Van Zandt County in
1987. She worked as a beautician for about 45 years.
She was a member of the Little Hope Baptist Church of Canton, Texas. She
enjoyed singing gospel music and playing the piano.
Survivors include: son Tim Meredith of Martins Mill; adopted son David Logan
of Newberg; daughters, Vicki Cantwell of Ben Wheeler, Texas, and Cathy Miles of
Greenville, Texas; stepdaughters, Vickie Rogers and Sherry Campbell of Tyler, Texas; 15
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister Dorothy Daniel of Athens, Texas;
sisters-in-law, Lessie and Belle Turner of Canton, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death was her first husband, Keeble Meredith, in 1963, and
her second husband, Al Watson, in 1996.
A memorial service was held Thursday in Canton, Texas.
John R. Rentfro
John Richard (Dick) Rentfro of Newberg died Dec. 20, 2003, in Newberg. He was
92.
He was born Sept. 11, 1911, to Junia and Lena Rentfro in Bingham, Neb. He
attended high school in Nebraska and for two years went to the University of Nebraska in
Lincoln. He moved to the Salem area in the early 1930s. He married Mildred Longfellow on
April 8, 1941. She preceded him in death in 1999. He relocated to Newberg in the early
days of World War II. There he owned and operated the Newberg Coast to Coast store. He
sold the store and returned to Salem, but came back to Newberg in 1951, taking over
management at the Springbrook Packing Company. In the mid-1960s he opened Rentfros
Outdoor Store and operated it for a number of years before selling it. He completed his
working career with the state Department of Agriculture.
He served on the Newberg City Council and planning commission, and was a
member of the Newberg Rotary and lifetime member of the Masons.
Survivors include: son Rick of Tualatin; daughter Pegge Rentfro of Arlington,
Wash.; grandchildren, Brand Rentfro of Tualatin and Kelly Rentfro of Portland.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 14 at the First Presbyterian
Church of Newberg.

Gertrude I. Blume
Newberg resident Gertrude Ila Blume died Jan. 6, 2004, of ALS (or Lou
Gehrigs disease) at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 81.
She was born July 23, 1922, to James and Edna Catton in Sheridan. She grew up
and attended school in Newberg. She married Wayne Blume on Sept. 2, 1950. He preceded her
in death in 1971. She worked as a hand tool assembler at A-dec Inc. for 13 years, retiring
in 1990.
She enjoyed spending time with friends and family, tending her garden and
yard, and walking.
Survivors include: daughters, Marsha Robinson of Newberg and Karlene Ferrell
of Sherwood; sons, Gregg of Newberg and Brian of Tualatin; nine grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband Wayne, brother Dale Catton in 1983, and
sister Marge Anderson in 2003.
Viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today (Saturday), and Sunday at
Attrells Newberg Funeral Chapel. A cryptside service will be held for family and

Harold Hal Brugger
Newberg resident Harold Hal Brugger died Jan. 5, 2004. He was 34.
He was born June 7, 1969, in Karlsruhe, Germany. He graduated from the
University of Idaho with a marketing degree. He battled illness for two years.
In his youth he enjoyed motorcycle racing with his father, for which he won
many trophies, family members said
Survivors include: parents Werner and Edith Brugger; sisters, Kareen, Marion and Sylvia;
and a large extended family in the United States, Canada and Germany.
A private service for family members will be held.

Roger L. Buchholtz
Former Newberg resident Roger LaDon Buchholtz died Jan. 5, 2004, in a
Portland hospital. He was 56.
He was born Feb. 16, 1947, to Walter and Grace (Thompson) Buchholtz in Red
Wing, Minn. He grew up in Goodhue, Minn., and graduated from high school in 1965. He
earned a degree in soil science from the University of Minnesota. He farmed in the Goodhue
area until 1985, when he moved with his family to Newberg. He worked for Bailey Nurseries
as a soil manager and in 1977 moved to Carlton. He worked until his health failed.
He enjoyed model trains and tractors, and making farm toys out of metal. He
traveled and made many videos, which he enjoyed watching with his family.
Survivors include: wife Jolene of Carlton; parents, Walter and Grace
Buchholtz; son Brendon of Carlton; daughters, Marisa Scagnelli of Troy, N.Y., and Karina
Buchholtz of Tualatin; sister Betty Thompson of Northfield, Minn.; and numerous cousins in
Minnesota.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at Attrells
Newberg Chapel with Pastor Randy Armstrong officiating. Committal is private.

Ethelena Elliott
Ethelena Elliott of Newberg died Dec. 31, 2003, in Newberg. She was 72.
She was born April 13, 1931, to Otis and Ethel (Hendrix) Simpson in Munday,
Texas, where she graduated from high school. She married Edward Elliott on July 31, 1949,
in Seymour, Texas, and they made their home wherever his work on the Santa Fe Railroad
took them. This included Texas, Arizona and California, before moving to the Newberg area
in 1962. She worked for the Newberg School District as a custodian in Springbrook Middle
School (now Mountain View Middle School). After her retirement in 1987 the couple
traveled.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and crossword puzzles. She was a
devoted mother and grandmother, her family said. She was a member of the First Methodist
Church in Munday, Texas.
Survivors include: husband Edward of Newberg; sons, Glenn of Newberg and
Eddie of Wilsonville; daughters, Pamela Wyckoff of Friday Harbor, Wash., and Jeannine
Molash of Newberg; brothers, James Simpson of Dallas, Texas, and Otis Simpson, Jr. of
Wichita Falls, Texas; sister Gerldine Peterson of Waco, Texas; five grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were sisters, Josephine, Annabelle and Betty.
A funeral service was held Jan. 3 in Newberg.

Steven R. Schmidt
Former Newberg resident Steven R. Schmidt died Dec. 26, 2003. He was 59.
He was born Feb. 12, 1944, in Fall River, Mass. He graduated from Burlington
High School in New Jersey in 1961. He entered the Navy and served on a submarine for four
years. He married Vicki Caldwell on Dec. 28, 1967. They moved to Gresham in 1968 and to
Newberg in 1972. He and his family moved around the Portland area.
He was a member of the Yamhill County Team Roper Club and competed around the
West Coast. He was also a well-known horse farrier.
Survivors include: sons, George of Salem and William of Benton City, Wash.;
daughter Diane of Bend; sisters, Elizabeth Nieton of Remulus, Mich., and Bunny Halliburton
of Dayton; brothers, Kennith of Virginia, Robt of Portland and Peter of Dundee; and two
grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service at 4 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Yamhill
County Fairgrounds.

Richard C. Holmes
Richard C. Holmes died Dec. 30, 2003. He was 81.
He was born May 7, 1922, to Arthur and Edna (Haley) Holmes in Portland. He
graduated from Commerce High School. He joined the Navy and served for three years during
World War II. He married Betty Walker in 1942. He worked for Pacific NW Bell for 32 years
before retiring in 1978. He worked for three years for H&R Block after retirement, as
well as one for Systems 99.
He enjoyed gardening and raising goats on the land he retired on near
Sherwood. He was a member of the Lions Club, Toastmasters, Telephone Pioneers and Hinson
Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include: wife Betty of Sherwood; sons, Richard of Oak Grove,
Stephen of Klamath Falls and Jeff of Newberg; eight grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
A memorial service was held Saturday in Portland. He was buried at Willamette
National Cemetery.
Craig Roberts
Former Newberg resident Craig Roberts died Dec. 27, 2003, following an
accident. He was 46.
He was born Dec. 31, 1956, to Wayne and Berthamay (Stanley) Roberts in
Medford. He graduated from Crater High School in 1975, from George Fox University with a
biology degree in 1979 and from Washington University in St. Louis with a medical degree
in 1983. After completing his residency in Spokane, he practiced family medicine in
Prosser, Wash. He settled in Tillamook and worked at the Tillamook County General
Hospital.
He was a member of the Netarts Friends Church and served as their treasurer.
He belonged to American Medical Association and the Christian Medical and Dental Society.
He was an avid birdwatcher and the Craig Roberts Amateur Birders Society was named after
him in Tillamook.
Survivors include: wife Crisanne of Tillamook; children, Mark, Jon and Becca
of Tillamook; parents, Wayne and Bertie of Newberg; sisters, Andrea Herling of Corvallis,
Cindi Hooker and Priscilla Hochhalter of Portland, and Sheila Hart of Hemlock, Ind.
A memorial service was held Jan. 3 in Tillamook.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Medical and Dental
Society or the Nature Conservancy in care of Wauds Funeral Home in Tillamook.

Retha J. Huffman
Newberg resident Retha Jane Huffman died Dec. 26, 2003, in a Portland
hospital. She was 66.
She was born Dec. 9, 1937, to Deryl and Justine (Kerp) Pratt in Salem. She
grew up in the Molalla area, attending school at Rural Dell. She married Gordon Ronglien
in 1953 and graduated from Dallas High School in 1954. She worked as a bus driver and in
the manufacturing business. Her husband preceded her in death in 1980. She moved to
Newberg, where she opened a childrens resale shop. She married Clifford Huffman in
1985.
She enjoyed square dancing, cross-stitching, sewing, handcrafts and cooking.
Survivors include: husband Cliff of Newberg; sister Bettylou Gage;
sister-in-law Betty Dalley; daughters, Ramona Mortier and Nadine Ronglien; grandsons,
Jason, Adam and Brian Shreck, and Nathan and Aaron Mortier; and several nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A funeral service was held Wednesday in Newberg.

Brenda (Stanley) Miezejeski
Former Newberg resident Brenda (Stanley) Miezejeski died Dec. 26, 2003, in
Seattle. She was 38.
She was born Oct. 4, 1965, to Robert and Sandra (Souza) Stanley in Fullerton,
Calif. She was raised in Newberg and attended high school here. She married Mark
Miezejeski in 1982. They moved to Vancouver, Wash., then to Seattle. Crohns disease
prevented her from working.
She was a devoted mother and wife, and made everyone laugh, her family said.
Survivors include: husband Mark of Seattle; mother and stepfather Sandra and
Bob Roggers of Lafayette; father Robert Stanley of Hawaii; sisters, Elizabeth Klain of
Salem and Celeste Mount of Newberg; and sons, Anthony and Justin of Kent, Wash.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at the St. Peter
Catholic Church in Newberg. A reception will follow in the church. |
