Nov. 27, 2004
Muriel J. Sparks
   Longtime Sherwood resident Muriel Jeanne Sparks died Nov. 18, 2004, at a Clackamas hospital. She was 78.
   She was born July 4, 1926, to Vern and Frances (McMurren) Long in Sandy. There she grew up and received her early education, graduating from Girls Polytech in Portland in 1944. On June 7, 1947, she married Edwin Sparks in Portland. For 35 years she worked for Pacific Northwest Bell until her retirement. Her husband preceded her in death in October 2000. The lifelong Oregonian lived in Sherwood the past 35 years.
   A member of the Sherwood United Methodist Church, she was active in church choir for many years. She was an avid gardener.
   Survivors include: sister Shirley Hargrove of Sherwood, a niece and four nephews.
   She was preceded in death by brother Robert Long.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Sherwood United Methodist Church with Pastor Gerry Hill officiating. Committal is private.

Cheryl W. Skinner
   Sherwood resident Cheryl Wilhelm Skinner died Nov. 19, 2004, at a Portland hospital. She was 57.
   She was born May 15, 1947, to Rudie and Elizabeth (Pray) Wilhelm in Portland. There she grew up, graduated from Lincoln High School, and earned, in 1974, a bachelors degree from Marylhurst College. She earned a master’s in education in 1983 from Portland State University and a master’s in school psychology from Lewis and Clark College in 1990. She taught special education classes in Woodburn and Tigard school districts before becoming a school psychologist for Portland Public Schools, leaving there in 1997. She was a part-time rural mail carrier for the Sherwood Post Office, and later became farm manager at Stillpoint Farm in Sherwood, specializing in equine rehabilitation, education and alternative therapies.
   On March 19, 1988, she married Steven Skinner. They made their home in Sherwood, where she was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.
   Survivors include: husband Steve of Sherwood; father Rudie Wilhelm of Portland; step-sons, Robert Skinner of Boston, Jonathan Skinner of Tigard, Michael Skinner of Hawaii and William Skinner of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; brother Rudie Wilhelm III of Portland; sisters, Nancy Carew of Lake Oswego and Libby Bryan of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; step-sisters, Alix Hendricks of Lake Oswego and Vicki Plavchak of Manhattan Beach, Calif.
   A recitation of the Rosary will be held at 10 a.m. today (Saturday) at St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood.  A Funeral Mass will follow. After, a reception will be held. A committal service will be at 2 p.m. that day at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Portland.

Jack K. Findley
   Longtime Newberg resident Jack K. Findley died Nov. 20, 2004. He was 63.
   He was born Sept. 16, 1941, to Otis Findley and Frances Gladstone in Gentry County, Mo. He and his family moved to Newberg when he was 7. He attended local grade school through high school. He married Patty Sturdevant on Aug. 6, 1960, in Newberg.
   He worked several years at NW Natural Gas and later went into the pipe-fitting trade, which he continued until he retired from SP Newsprint in May 2004. At the Newberg paper mill he was involved in union activities and served as president for several years.
   He was athletic and enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. Influenced by his mother’s belief, he held a deep faith in Jesus Christ. He coached many of his kids’ sports teams. He was an involved member of Newberg Friends Church for more than 30 years. He liked spending time with his grandchildren.
   Survivors include: wife Patty; sons, Ron, Kyle and Ryan; daughter Kristen; grandchildren, Dylan, Alexis, Andrew Jack, Adam, Gabriel, Hazel, Jaquin and Luke; brothers, Maurice, Gary, John and Dick; sister Kay.
He was preceded in death by infant brother Ronald.
   A memorial celebration will be at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Newberg Friends Church.
   Memorial contributions may be made to George Fox University Bruin Athletic Association or to Newberg Friends Camp Scholarship fund.

Vince E. Donley
   Newberg resident Vince Edward Donley died Nov. 20, 2004. He was 76.
   He was born May 6, 1930, to James and Gertrude (Penny) Donley in Willow Lake, S.D. At 13 he moved to Oregon, where he attended high school in Mount Angel.  In February 1951 he enlisted in U.S. Army and served his country in Korea, until his honorable discharge on in January 1953. On December 7, 1959, Vince married Rosemary Hlobil in Corvallis. He built bridges for Southern Pacific Railroad for more than 30 years, retiring in 1985.
   He raised greyhounds prior to retirement. In retirement he enjoyed dog and horse races. A New York Yankees and a Oregon State University Beavers fan, he enjoyed sports. He enjoyed his grandchildren.
   Survivors include: wife Rosemary Donley of Newberg; daughters, Sherry Donley of Aloha and Teresa Townsend of Dundee; brother Easty of Portland; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by brothers, Jimmy and Larry; and sisters, Jean, Mary, Inez and Marge.
   A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road.

Richard A. Costa
   Richard Anderson Costa died Nov. 22, 2004, at his home in Newberg. He was 46.
   He was born Oct. 2, 1958, to Everett and LaWanda (Chitwood) Costa in Castro Valley, Calif. He grew up in Fremont, Calif., where he attended Hopkins Junior High and Mission High School. He worked as a truck driver delivering plants for a nursery. At 18 he married Debra Shaffer. A year later they moved to Beaverton, moving to Newberg in 1984.
   He worked as a fork lift operator for International Paper, a lumber yard in Tualatin, until earlier this year when he went to work at Parr Lumber in Newberg. He and his wife divorced about five years ago.
   An outdoorsman, riding motorcycles was his favorite pastime, he was an avid bow hunter and he liked to fish. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and North America Hunters Association.
   Survivors include: parents, Everett and LaWanda Costa of Manteca, Calif.; son Matthew of Newberg; daughter Megan Costa of Newberg; brothers, Steven of Salida, Calif., and Paul Costa of Manteca, Calif.; and sister Carolyn Treadaway of Ripon, Calif.
   He was preceded in death by sister Darlene.
   A memorial service was held Friday at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Chaplain William Larson officiating. Committal was private.

Nov. 20, 2004
Karissa K. Edwards
   Newberg resident and George Fox University student Karissa Kay Edwards died Nov. 14, 2004. She was 20.
   She was born Sept. 4, 1984, to Steven and Mary (Henkes) Edwards in Taft, Calif. She grew up and received her early education in California, graduating from Landmark Christian School Program in Lancaster, Calif., at the age of 15. In 2001 she enrolled at George Fox University to pursue a sociology degree with a Christian ministry minor, which she would have finished this semester.
   She was a residential assistant at the university’s Hobson 2 dormitory and was attending a resident assistant Christian seminar in Lincoln City at the time of her death. She was involved in mission programs at the university and went on many mission trips. She was a councilor at the Oaks World Import Camp in California and performed inner city work in Portland twice. She was a National Bible Quiz champion in 2001 and was the only person to receive seven gold medals.
   Survivors include: parents, Steven and Mary Edwards of Newberg; grandparents, LeeRoy and Janetha Henkes of Del City, Okla.; grandmother Mary Edwards of Oklahoma City, Okla.; brothers, Josiah, Daniel and Jeremy; sisters, Charity, Krystal and Bethany; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.
  A memorial service was held Nov. 17 at George Fox University’s Bauman Auditorium with Campus Pastor Greg Lamm and Pastor Stephen Jaquith officiating.

May Holzmeyer
   Longtime Dundee and Newberg resident May Holzmeyer died Nov. 14, 2004, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 100.
   She was born Oct. 8, 1904, to Friedrich and Inez (Broadwell) Groth in Dundee. The oldest of 10 children, she grew up and received her early education in Dundee, graduating from Dundee High School in 1925. On June 18, 1925, she married Fred Holzmeyer in Dundee. She was a homemaker and raised their family. She was treasurer of the Dundee Women’s club and bridge clubs. Her husband preceded her in death in 1975.
   In 1980 she took her first airplane trip, to Hawaii; she cruised through the Panama Canal and to Alaska; and she moved from her lifelong home of Dundee to Newberg to Friendsview Manor, where she thereafter resided.
   Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting and needlework. As a member of the “Happy Hookers” she hooked a rug for Timberline Lodge.
   Survivors include: daughters, Joan Russell of Woodland Hills, Calif., and Florence Bradley of Gladstone; brother John Groth of Keizer; sister Janet Prater of Dallas; grandchildren, Marcia Richardson of Sisters and Marla Dewald of Roseburg; great-grandchildren, Cory Sikes and Kelly and Cody Richardson; and great-great-grandson Logan Richardson.
   She was preceded in death by son Frederick, three brothers and four sisters.
   Her committal was private at Dundee Pioneer Cemetery.

Clinton E. Stockley Jr.
   Clinton Edward Stockley Jr. died from lymphoma complications on Nov. 14, 2004, at his home in Newberg. He was 82.
   He was born Oct. 14, 1922, to Clinton and Mary Catherine in Seattle, where he attended school and graduated from Garfield High School. He enrolled at University of Washington, but put his education on hold when in 1942 he enlisted in the Army. He served two years in the 1st Signal Company on Attu Island in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.
   He returned to the university and in 1950 graduated as a fisheries biologist. He worked for the Territory of Alaska, establishing a sockeye salmon run in Frazer Lake on Kodiak Island. He worked for the Washington Department of Fisheries, the last 18 years of his career spent in Vancouver managing the Washington Columbia River salmon fishery. He retired in 1982.
   He and his wife Barbara lived the 14 years after retirement spending summers in Sheldon, Wash., and winters in Crystal Beach, Fla. His health declining, they moved to Newberg to be closer to family.
   His hobbies included hunting, fishing, skiing, wood carving, cannon making, photography, sailing, traveling, reading and, above all, gardening. His family said he was always cheerful, his positive outlook and sense of humor endearing to all know knew him.
   Survivors include: wife Barbara; daughters, Laura, Rebecca, Ellie and Mary; son Nathan; stepdaughters, Jan, Chris, Gail and Lynn; sister Barbara; eight granddaughters; seven grandsons and seven great-grandchildren.
   No service was held per his request.
   Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent’s Hospice.

Samuel H. Dinsmore
  Following surgery, Samuel H. Dinsmore died Nov. 13, 2004, at his home in Newberg. He was 84.
   He was born Oct. 13, 1920, in Butte, Mont. He attended various high schools and obtained a four-year college education in naval history at St. Martin’s College in Olympia. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941 and retired as a commander in 1964. His Navy career took him to stations in Hawaii and California, as well as a post at the Pentagon.
   He married Thelma Wade in 1969. He most recently worked for the Washington State Utilities and Transportation Commission in Olympia, retiring to Newberg in 1990 to be near family.
   Survivors include: wife Thelma of Newberg; daughter Laurie Copelan of Olympia; sons, Jeff of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Chris of Tacoma; stepdaughter Joni Fouts of Newberg; stepson Brad Fouts of Lake Oswego; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   A memorial and gathering for friends and family will be held on Dec. 4 at Brad Fouts’ home in Lake Oswego. The Rev. Lee Shafer will officiate.

Nov. 17, 2004
Joseph Rinkes
   Newberg resident Joseph Rinkes died of a heart attack Nov. 2, 2004, in Newberg. He was 66.
   He was born May 8, 1938, to Anthony and Averill (Morrell) Rinkes in Oregon. He graduated from West Linn High School and served in the Army Reserves for six years. He married Kimberly Finley on Dec. 30, 1980. He worked as a woodsman falling timber most his life. He also worked as a steel fabricator.
   He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a Master Gardener.
   Survivors include: wife Kimberly; daughter Rikki Chamberlin of Stevenson, Wash.; son Rodney of Missoula, Mont.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by daughter Debra Rinkes in 1996.
   A public gathering of friends and family was held Nov. 13 in Newberg.

George A. Martin
   George Albert Martin died in an automobile accident on Nov. 11, 2004, in Linton. He was 24.
   He was born March 20, 1980, to Eddie and Kathryn (Beyer) Martin in Portland. He lived with his family several places in the Willamette Valley until moving to Aurora at the age of 8. He attended school there until his senior year when he moved to Dallas, graduating in 1998 from Dallas High School. He worked as a millwright helper in construction. He lived in Dallas for six years before moving to Albany in 2004.
   He was in his second year of the fire science program at Clackamas Community College. He was a volunteer firefighter with the McMinnville Fire Department for three years and was a basic emergency medical technician.
   He was a family man and attended the Free Methodist Church in Newberg. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking and spending time outdoors. He also enjoyed working on his truck and was an active member of the Xcessive Speedy Car Club.
   Survivors include: parents, Kevin and Tammy Krieger of Aurora; brothers, Bill of Newberg and Kevin, Erin, Robert and Scott of Aurora; and grandparents, Rex and Gloria Lawrence of Newberg. He was preceded in death by his birth parents.
   A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 18 at Newberg Free Methodist Church with Pastor Shaun McNay officiating. Committal is private at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Barbara E. Houser
   Newberg resident Barbara Elise Houser died Nov. 7, 2004, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 86.
   She was born Jan. 30, 1924, to William and Ludie (Wood) Garrett in McMinnville. She attended elementary school at Jennings Lodge near Milwaukie. Her family moved and she attended school in Dayton, graduating from Dayton High School in 1941. In 1945, she graduated from Pacific College (now George Fox University) with a degree in chemistry. She taught high school chemistry in Toledo from 1945 to 1947 and at Canby High School from 1947 to 1949.
   On June 6, 1948, she married Arney Houser in Newberg. As she raised her family, she substitute taught in Yamhill County schools. She furthered her education at Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon State University). Later she taught at Carlton Elementary School for several years, before going into retail sales.
   She retired in 1989 and six years later, in 1995, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Her husband preceded her in death in August 2000. She was a member of the Newberg Christian Church in Newberg.
   Survivors include: daughters, Mary Ruff of Newberg, Susan March of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and Jean Rader of Roseburg; son William of Poulsbo, Wash.; sisters, Ruth Schultz of Dundee and Hazel Harrison of Newberg; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; niece Linda McCall and nephew James Schultz.
   She was preceded in death by her parents and great-grandson James March.
   A funeral service was held Nov. 11 at Newberg Christian Church with Pastor David Case officiating. A graveside service followed at Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Edward F. Teich
   Edward Frederick Teich died Nov. 4, 2004, at his Tigard home. He was 86.
   He was born March 19, 1918, to Edward and Sybil (Duket) Teich in Cicero, Ill. He served in the U.S. Army infantry during World War II. He received a Purple Heart for injuries received at Normandy. In 1949 he married Helen Travis in Elmhurst, Ill. He retired in 1983 from a career with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. His wife preceded him in death in 1982. He relocated in 1990 to Tigard, where he has since resided.
His family said he was a loving husband and father.
   Survivors include: daughters, Joan Teich of Winona, Minn., Michelle Teich of Newberg, and Susan Teich of Indianapolis; and six grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by son Martin, brother Robert and sisters, Dorothy Wagner and Marleah Kalas.
   At his request there were no services.

Beverly D. Baird
   Beverly D. Baird died Nov. 7, 2004, at a Newberg care facility. She was 76.
   She was born June 14, 1928, to Everett and Rebecca (Cox) Knotts in Des Moines, Iowa. At age 19 she moved to Portland, went to work at Fred Meyer preparing payroll and lived with her cousin. She married Wayne Baird on July 30, 1949, in Portland, where they made their first home.
   They relocated near her family in Des Moines, Iowa, then returned to Portland in 1955.
   Her family — including her parents, her sisters and their husbands — moved to a 258-acre farm in Newberg, where they raised Christmas trees and blackberries. In 1962 she and her husband built a home where they lived for 34 years. They built another home, lived there for 10 years, and sold it when she became ill.
   Her family said she was well known for her ability to style hair.
   Survivors include: husband Wayne of Newberg; sons, Michael of Carlton and Ron and Chris of Newberg; daughter Pamela Trent of Newberg; sisters, Phyllis Sylvester, Joan McNelly, Patricia Senecaut, Harriet Wolf, and Ruth Gillaspie, all of Newberg; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by sister Peggy in 1992.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 20 at Christian Gospel Assemblies, 14000 N.E. Highway 240, with Pastor Tom Valencia officiating. Concluding services are private at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Robert C. Thorne
   Newberg native Robert C. Thorne died Nov. 9, 2004, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 83.
   He was born Jan. 17, 1921, to Elmer and Florence (Mills) Thorne in Newberg. He grew up and received his education in Newberg, graduating from Newberg High School. Starting in 1942, he served in the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged in November 1945. He returned to Newberg and on May 21, 1949, married Cletis King. The couple has made their home in Newberg for the past 55 years. For 30 years he worked as a mechanic at the Springbrook Garage and then worked for A-dec Inc., retiring in 1986.
   He enjoyed farming, woodworking and spending time at his beach house in Pacific City. He was a member of the Newberg Rod and Gun Club for many years. His family said he was a source of great joy.
   Survivors include: wife Cletis of Newberg; sons, Cecil of Stanfield, and Lee, Mark and Ted of Newberg; sisters, Phyllis Finley of Tigard and Doris Feenstra of Newberg; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by brother Earl.
   A graveside service was held Nov. 11 at Newberg Friends Cemetery with Pastor Jane Shaffer officiating.

Donald C. Winkler
   Donald C. Winkler died Nov. 4, 2004, at his Sherwood home after a long illness. He was 59.
   He was born June 24, 1945, to Donald and Helen (Toal) Winkler in McKeesport, Pa. He grew up and received his early education in Irwin, Pa., and graduated from Concordia College in Fort Wayne, Ind. On Jan. 18, 1969, he married Patricia Fulton in Fort Wayne, Ind. They moved to Illinois, where he attended Concordia Seminary in Springfield.
   He dedicated his life to ministry, becoming a pastor in deaf ministry for four years in Columbus, Ohio, then for six years in Pittsburg, Pa. In 1981, he became pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sherwood and remained pastor there until 1992. He founded Lutherans for Life and was an advocate for the lives of unborn children.
   He enjoyed mountain climbing, family vacations, the outdoors, fishing and living in Oregon.
   Survivors include: wife Patricia of Sherwood; sons, Jeff of San Jose, Calif., Jared of Portland, Jeremy of Scio and James of Portland; daughter Jill Winkler of Minneapolis; brothers, Ralph of Irwin, Pa., and David of Bell Vernon, Pa.; and sister Susan Winkler of Harpers Ferry, W.V.
   A graveside service was held Nov. 8 at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Sherwood. A memorial service followed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aloha with pastors Jonathan Dinger and Loel Haak officiating.

Lewis M. Nethken
   Newberg resident Lewis M. Nethken died Nov. 3, 2004, at the Life Care Center in McMinnville. He was 83.
   He was born Jan. 21, 1921, in Idaho. He graduated from Yellow Pine High School in 1939. He joined the Army and was stationed in Pearl Harbor and in Australia during World War II. After the war, he farmed hay in Idaho. He married Leota Shelby on May 31, 1956. He farmed until retiring in 1969. He moved in 1992 to Gresham and in 1998 to Newberg.
   He enjoyed long drives, telling stories, watching the neighbors, watching his wife quilt, visiting his children and teasing his granddaughter.
   Survivors include: Leota of Newberg; daughters, Kathy Morgan of California and Tiny Lawler of Texas; sons, Kym of Beaverton and Jerry of Gaston; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jill J. Lysaught
   Jill J. Lysaught died of ovarian cancer Nov 6, 2004, at her home in Vancouver, Wash. She was 34.
   She was born May 2, 1970, to John Lysaught and Pamela Canfield in Seattle. She attended junior high and two years of high school at Newberg High School. She obtained a bachelors degree from Western State College in Monmouth and a masters degree in occupational health and safety from Oregon State University. She was engaged to Dennis Walker of Vancouver.
   She enjoyed running, traveling, cooking, visiting with friends, nieces and nephews, and her work at Hewlett-Packard.
   Survivors include: father John Lysaught of Bend; mother Pamela Canfield of Brookings; sister Jean Hansen; brother John Lysaught; seven nieces and nephews, and uncle and aunt Scott and Diane Canfield of Newberg.
   No funeral will be held. Disposition is by cremation.

Nov. 6, 2004
Glenn L. Bates
   Longtime Newberg resident Glenn L. Bates died Oct. 30, 2004, at a Portland hospital. He was 78.
   He was born April 28, 1926, to Roy and Lilly (Doughty) Bates in Salem. He graduated from Gresham Union High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army for 22 months during World War II. Upon his return to the states, he attended Linfield College for one year, where he met Betty Murray at the library. He married her on Sept. 5, 1947, in McMinnville.
   He worked for Co-Oil and Supply in The Dalles for 10 years. In 1960, the couple returned to McMinnville. He started a career in insurance. They moved in 1968 to Newberg, where they have since resided. He pursued his work in insurance for 44 years, working full-time up to two weeks prior to his death. He was a Chartered Life Insurance Underwriter, a Chartered Financial Consultant and a Certified Senior Adviser.
   His interests included music, reading, gardening, fishing and camping, as well as barbecuing. He was a member of the Lions Club and Toastmasters in McMinnville.
   Survivors include: wife Betty of Newberg; daughters, Evelyn Neasham of Redmond and Karen Bates-Smith and Janie Bates, both of Newberg; sisters, Grace Pierson of Tacoma and Jeanette Nelson of San Antonio; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
   A memorial service was held Nov. 4 at Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Portland with Elder Edward Williams, Dr. Herbert Anderson and Dr. H. Robert Ellisen officiating. Private committal was at Parklawn Cemetery in The Dalles.

Mildred M. Delker
   Mildred Malinda Delker died Oct, 31, 2004, at King City Rehabilitation. She was 93.
   She was born Sept. 9, 1911, to Charles and Hilda (Lindberg) Hasel in Castlewood, S.D. The oldest daughter of 12 children, she grew up and received her early education in New England, N.D. In the early 1930s she moved to Oregon, making her home in Sherwood, where she lived more than 60 years. She was a member of the Sherwood Friends Church for many years.
   Survivors include: son Stanley Arthur; daughter Darlene Girt of Portland; sisters, Mercedes Smith and Viola Jordan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell’s Sherwood Funeral Chapel. A concluding service will follow at Elim Cemetery in Brush Prairie, Wash.

Lois I. Carsley
   Newberg resident Lois Irene Carsley died Nov. 1, 2004, at a Newberg care facility. She was 84.
   She was born Sept. 28, 1920, to Percy and Anna (Coughtry) Jarvis in Yamhill. She attended Yamhill Grade School for five years, then two additional years in Denmark. She finished her early education in the Newberg schools.
   On Dec, 26, 1940, she married Charles Carsley in Vancouver, Wash. They made their first home in Dundee. Two years later they moved to Newberg. She worked locally harvesting crops and was a homemaker raising her family. In 1946, the couple moved their family to Champoeg and two years later, in 1948, relocated to Fernwood for a year. She and her husband moved again in 1950 to Dundee, where they stayed until 1968, at which time they returned to Newberg. They have since resided in the Newberg and Dundee area. After his retirement they spent winters in California and Arizona.  In April 1999 her husband preceded her in death.
   She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, bird watching,  square dancing and spending time at the coast. She was a member of the Newberg V.F.W. Auxiliary.
   Survivors include: daughters, Anna “Susie” Hindman of Newberg and Lola Hollis of Amidon, N.D.; sons, Charles “Warren” of Lafayette and James of Newberg; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by daughter Leta Carsley and a brother.
  A funeral service was held Nov. 5 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Peter Blank officiating. A concluding service followed at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Larry A. Jones
   Larry Allen Jones died Oct. 31, 2004, at his Sherwood home. He was 54.
   He was born Dec. 31, 1949, to Herman and Beverley (Fox) Jones in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He attended school in Newberg and graduated from Newberg High School in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from March 1970 to November 1971. He received several commendations, citations and ribbons for his service.
   After his discharge he returned to Sherwood. He owned and operated a trucking business and worked primarily for local construction sites and rock quarries. Maintaining the business’ rigs became his hobby.
   He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
   Survivors include: sons, Ryan of Sherwood, Troy of Lake Oswego and Chris Hasedahl of Aloha; daughter Angie Davis of Aloha; mother Beverly Jones of Newberg; brother Dennis of Gresham; six grandchildren and nephew Darin Jones.
   He was preceded in death by father Herman Jones and by sister Diane Jones in August 2002.
   A graveside service was held Nov. 4 at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg with Chaplain William Larson officiating.

Reese C. Kennedy
   Dr. Reese Carl Kennedy died Oct. 27, 2004, at his home in Newberg. He was 81.
   He was born July 1, 1923, to Carl and Arminta Kennedy in Batavia, N.Y. He grew up in Rochester, N.Y., where his father worked for Kodak. He graduated in 1949 with an engineering degree from Michigan State University. Graduation was delayed four years when he enlisted in the Army and spent time in the European theater of World War II. Following graduation, he moved west to work for Weyerhaeuser for one year. He returned home to marry a college sweetheart, Ruth Bernheisel of Colon, Mich., on July 1, 1950.
   They moved to Oregon and worked in Coos Bay and Lebanon. In 1954 he returned to school, graduating from the Oregon School of Dentistry in 1959. He practiced mostly in Tigard, until retirement in 1988. He moved to Newberg in 2000.
   A hobby since youth was making model sailing vessels. He attended Tigard Christian Church and, while in Newberg, the Chehalem Valley Baptist Church. He was a member of the American Dental Association.
   Survivors include: wife Ruth of Newberg; daughters, Charlotte Kennedy of Newberg and Roxanne Weidman of Battleground, Wash.; sister Bethany Mangurian of Alamo, Calif.; nephew Michael Mangurian of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and grandchildren, Nathaniel and Cassandra Weidman of Battleground, Wash.
   A service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Young’s Funeral Home, 11831 S.W. Pacific Highway, Tigard. A private inurnment will be at the Willamette National Cemetery.

Margie Milford
    Former Newberg resident Margie Milford died Oct. 28, 2004, in Tigard. She was 52.
   She was born Oct. 19, 1952, to Darrel and Evelyn Milford in Marshville, Mo. She moved to Coos Bay in 1959. She was raised in North Bend, and graduated from North Bend High School in 1970. She married Johnny Lawson on May 6, 1971, in Dundee. She moved to McMinnville. She ran an in-home day care. She moved to Newberg in 1990. She began working with mentally handicapped adults as a caregiver in 1991. She began working for Good Shepherd in 2000. She moved to Tualatin in 2001 to be a live-in caregiver at an adult mentally handicapped home.
   She enjoyed watching her grandchildren play sports. She was a Girl Scout leader and loved sewing and baking. She loved tigers, the ocean and being a caregiver.
   Survivors include: daughters, JoEda Simonson of McMinnville, Amy McKinney of Lafayette and Heidi Lawson of McMinnville; son Johathan Lawson of Newberg; sisters, Marie Nagel of North Bend and Ginger “Vivian” Howard of Newberg; brother Gary Milford of Salem; 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
   Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans, McMinnville. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel with the Rev. Tom Eakes officiating. She will be buried at the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in McMinnville.

Jean W. Osborne
   Former Newberg resident Jean W. Osborne died Oct. 24, 2004, at a King City care facility. She was 86.
   She was born Nov. 26, 1917, to George and Ella (Gibson) Whittet in Princeton, Minn. She started her education in Princeton and then at age 8 she went to school in Laguna Beach, Calif., where her mother died in 1926. She moved to Porterville, Calif., where she finished her education. She married Bryce Osborne in 1945 in Reno, Nev. They moved to Klamath Falls, which was their home until 1968, when they relocated to Gresham. She was a bookkeeper for her husband’s trucking business. Her husband preceded her in death in 1975. She moved to Newberg. She and her sister owned and operated a clothing store in Portland.
   She enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting and caring for her family.
   Survivors include: sons, Robert Osborne of Newberg, Don Fink of Bakersfield, Calif., and Mike Osborne of Newport; stepson, Jim Osborne of Beaverton; stepdaughters, Sharon Taylor and Beverly Bertolucci, both of Sacramento, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by: stepson Richard Osborne; two brothers; one sister; and granddaughter Stacie Osborne.
    A graveside service was held Oct. 29 at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg with Judi Drucker officiating.

Erne Beringer
   Erne Beringer of Sherwood died of cancer on Oct. 24, 2004, in Sherwood. She was 74.
   She was born in March 1930 to Ludwig and Anne Gimm in Chicago. She graduated high school. She worked as a garment cutter for Jantzen and Dennis Uniform in Portland. She was a homemaker since 1966 and worked on the family farm. Her husband, Fred Beringer, preceded her in death in 1997.
   She enjoyed lake fishing, painting, drawing, crocheting, embroidery and wood work. She was active with the Gibbs Community Center on Belle Road.
   Survivors include: daughter Christine Beringer of Sherwood; sister Dorothea Szydlowski of Tigard; and grandson Adam Jeffries of Sherwood.
   She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Ronald Gimm.
   A day of remembrance was held Friday at the Beringer home.

Eileen J. Douthit
   Longtime Newberg resident Eileen Jean Douthit died Oct. 27, 2004, at a Newberg care facility. She was 71.
   She was born March 2, 1933, to Edward and Ruby (Schultz) Zimbrick in Little Falls, Minn. At 5 years old she moved with her family to Newberg, where she attended local schools and graduated from Newberg High School in 1952. On June 22, 1952, she married Jerold Douthit in Newberg, where they made their home until 1990. They moved to Sweet Home, where they lived for 13 years, moving to Woodburn in 2003. Her husband preceded her in death on May 14, 2004.
   She spent many years raising a family. She worked for Sarton Electronics, at A-Dec and for more than three years at Forest Medical Center in Hillsboro. After leaving the work force, she took a position at Wylie Creek Assisted Living, retiring in 1999.
   She was an avid painter. She spent time knitting and was a skilled baker. She enjoyed traveling, and with every trip brought home a new rock for her collection. She was a member of the A-Dec Bowling League and a past member of Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg.
   Survivors include: son Jerry of Aurora; daughters, Susan Scott of Houston, Texas, and Barbara Hackett of Sweet Home; brother Ernie Zimbrick of St. Helens; sisters, Phyllis Barker of Warren and Judy Risler of Woodland, Wash.; five grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.

Gladys M. Mulholland
   Gladys M. Mulholland died Oct. 23, 2004, at her home. She was 82.
   She was born Nov. 25, 1921, to Leona and William Bouton in San Benito, Texas. She married Vernon Mulholland on Aug. 29, 1941, in Berwyn, Ill.
   Survivors include: husband Vernon; son William; granddaughters, Mindy Giesch and Misty Try; great-grandchildren, Bethany, Jordan and Cassidy Giesch and Emily and Elijah Try; sisters, Mary Belle, Phyllis and Joann; brothers, Jack, Clark and Dale; and many nieces and nephews.
   She was a member of the Newberg Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Cornelia F. Low
   Cornelia Frances Low died Oct. 23, 2004, died in her Newberg home. She was 90.
   She was born June 14, 1914, to John and Nellie (Hammond) Williams in Bayfield, Colo. She moved with her parents to Melrose, then to Roseburg, where she graduated from high school. She took a secretarial course and was employed in a chiropractic office for a few years. She was employed by the state employment department in Roseburg as the secretary to the manager.
   On May 14, 1952, she married G. Stewart Low and later that year they moved to Portland, where Stewart was employed by Pierce Freightliner. After six years of owning a nut farm in Sherwood, the couple moved to Newberg in 1968. She worked as church secretary for First Presbyterian Church for 19 years, retiring in 1987.
She was a member of the Women’s Circle and the Eastern Star.
   Survivors include: husband: G. Stewart of Newberg; sons, Stewart of Vancouver, Wash., and Robert of Salem; and nine grandchildren.

Leo J. Mandel
   Lifetime Sherwood resident Leo Joseph Mandel died Oct. 14, 2004, at a King City care facility. He was 92.
   He was born March 1, 1912, to Frank and Theresa (Sester) Mandel in Sherwood. He grew up on a farm on Elwert Road and lived in Sherwood all of his life. He attended Middleton Grade School and continued to farm. On Sept. 16, 1950, he married Mary Richardson at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Portland. They raised chickens and beef cattle for several years and he worked on the railroad. He also worked on the road maintenance crew for Washington County for years, retiring in March 1975.
   He was the oldest living original member of St. Francis Catholic Church for several years. He and his wife made many trips to Reno with friends. They took several trips to Hawaii, Mexico and New Zealand with friends and took three cruises. For many years they played pinochle with groups at Multnomah Senior Center and Beaverton Elks.
   Survivors include: wife Mary of Sherwood; sister Anita Munroe of Newberg; four nephews; three nieces; and grandnephews and grandnieces.
   He was preceded in death by two brothers.
   A vigil service was held Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood. A funeral mass was held Thursday at the church with Father Tom McCarthy officiating. A concluding service followed at St. Anthony Cemetery in Tigard.

David Block
   Former Keizer resident and Newberg churchgoer David Block died of an age-related illness on Oct. 17, 2004, at the Sea Mar Community Care Center in Seattle. He was 82.
   He was born Dec. 1, 1921, to Abraham Block and Agataha (Janzen) Block in Mennon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He lived in Henderson, Neb., until he graduated from high school, at which time he and his best friend traveled to Oregon for adventure. He married Dessa Hooker on Nov. 24, 1941. He served in U.S. Navy as a radioman during World War II. He and his family lived in Oregon until 1998, when he retired and moved to Oak Harbor, Wash. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and for a time at the Newberg Church of Christ.
   Survivors include: daughters, Barbara Saunders of Cheshire, Nancy Schaffer of Hoodsport, Wash., and Melanie Block of Portland; sons, Gerald of Clackamas and Rex of Oak Harbor; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and brother Cornelius of Minnesota.
   He was preceded in death by wife Dessa in May 2000, and by sister Zelma.
   Graveside services were held Oct. 21 at Sunnyside Cemetery in Washington. Minister Joe Cook of the Oak Harbor Church of Christ officiated.

Gwen E. Thornton
   Former Newberg resident Gwen E. Thornton died Sept. 3, 2004. She was 78.
   She was born July 3, 1926, to Chester and Doris (McLaughlin) Hanville in Portland. She was raised and educated in Newberg. During World War II she worked in the shipyards in Portland. She was briefly employed at the bus depot in Newberg, but most her time was spent taking care of family.
   On July 14, 1948, she married Virgil “Cork” Thornton in Vancouver, Wash. He preceded her in death in September 1982.
   Her hobbies included bingo at the church and playing Bunco with friends. She took trips to Spirit Mountain and Reno. She took care of her yard. She enjoyed spending time with her grandson.
   Survivors include: daughters, Debbie Pack of McMinnville and Patty Bryant of Newberg; sister Betty McAlpin of Hillsboro; and grandson Craig Pack of McMinnville. She was preceded in death by sister Thelma Campbell in August 2002.
   A funeral service was held Sept. 8 at St. Peter Catholic Church. Mausoleum entombment was at the Valley View Mausoleum in Newberg.

Verl O. Parrish
   Newberg native Verl Owen Parrish died Sept. 17, 2004, in Seattle. He was 82.
   He was born Dec. 5, 1921, to Arthur and Agnes (Powell) Parrish on the Parrish Donation Land Claim (1851) in the Fernwood area of Newberg.
   He attended Fernwood Elementary and Newberg High School, graduating in 1939. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, spending most his active duty in the South Pacific. He completed his mechanical engineering degree at University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. He worked for Boeing in Seattle, retiring after 38 years in 1984. He married Betty Lou Phillips on Aug. 24, 1948, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
   He and his wife were involved at the West Seattle Christian Church and helped develop Puget Sound Christian College in Everett, Wash., Pleasant Valley Christian Camp in Mineral, Wash., and the Christian Evangelistic Association in Edmonds, Wash.
   The couple were avid travelers, traversing the United States and making several trips to Europe and the Far East, as well as to the Holy Land. As part of their 50th anniversary celebration in 1998 they took a cruise of fjords and port towns of Norway. For their retirement years they lived in Chandler, Ariz, in the winters and Seattle in the summers.
   Survivors include: daughters, Sheryl Cope of Issaquah, Wash., and Gail Parrish of Federal Way, Wash.; brother Dale Parrish of Newberg; grandson Jordan Cope of Issaquah; aunts, Lillie Kendall of Newberg and Wilma Parrish of Turner; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
   He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
   A celebration of life was held Sept. 26 at West Seattle Christian Church with the Rev. Alan Gardner officiating. Inurnment was private at Pleasant Valley Christian Camp.

Joseph L. Kycek
   Former Newberg resident Joseph L. Kycek Jr. died Oct. 16, 2004, in Eureka, Calif. He was 86.
   He was born April 14, 1918, in Elma, Wash. He was raised in Newberg and graduated from Pacific College (now George Fox University). He served in the National Guard, primarily as a battery clerk. He worked for Safeway stores while attending school. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946. While enlisted, he performed various clerical jobs and instructed remote-control gunnery in Kingman, Ariz. He was the junior accountant and auditor for the Maritime Commission in 1943.
   He started with the Federal Social Security Program in Portland in 1946. He transferred to the Eureka Social Security office in 1948 as a claims examiner. His job from 1952 until retirement was as an insurance field representative. He was responsible for administration of old age, survivors and disability insurance programs for 18 years in Humboldt, Del Norte and Curry counties. He retired after 31 years of government service at the age of 55.
   He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at his cabin at Big Lagoon, Calif.
   Survivors include: daughter Carol-Jo Payne; son John; granddaughter Patricia Kycek; grandson Travis Brown; great-grandson Devan Brown; brother Vince of Veneta; and nieces and nephews, John, Paddi, Gary and Steven Kycek and Mike, Chris, Patrick and Tonya Case.
   He was preceded in death by wife Carol, son Kenneth and grandson Brady Kycek.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 30 at Sanders Funeral Home in Eureka.


Oct. 20, 2004
George A. Bales
  Newberg native George Andrew Bales died Oct. 8, 2004, at Chehalem Care Center in Newberg. He was 83.
   He was born Nov. 5, 1920, in Newberg. He graduated from Newberg High School and earned bachelor degrees in art and theology from Pacific College (now George Fox University), and a master’s degree in physical education from Springfield College in Massachusetts.
   He married Elenita Mardock, then became the first pastor of the new Friends church in Talent. From there he moved to Springfield, Mass., and while there he also was the pastor of the Wyben Community Chapel.
   On returning to George Fox College in 1948 he was named athletic director, professor of physical education and head basketball and football coach, training many young men who later became coaches in Oregon and Washington schools. During this time he also was pastor of the United Methodist Church in Dundee.
   He and his family moved to Eugene, where he enrolled in a doctoral program in physical education at the University of Oregon. He later became the physical director of the Eugene YMCA.
   In 1959 he was called to Kelso, Wash., to be the pastor of the Rose Valley Friends Church. During his 20 years at the church, he and volunteers from the church and community remodeled the church and added a two-story addition. He also led a group that constructed a gym near the church, which was later named George Bales Gymnasium.
   He conducted more than 300 weddings and 200 funerals and was active in several community organizations. He was a volunteer and trainer in the Rose Valley Fire Department, PTA president of the Rose Valley School, and headed a project on behalf of the Rose Valley and Carrolls cemeteries to provide funding for their maintenance. He was a volunteer at the Longview, Wash., YMCA, coaching the women’s volleyball team to several championships.
   After retirement from Rose Valley Friends Church in 1979 he moved to Kalama, Wash., building a house overlooking the Columbia River. A lifelong canoeist and sailor, he organized the Kalama Sailing Club and was its first commodore. He attended the United Methodist Church in Kalama and served as guest minister. He later attended the Longview Community Church.
In 1997 he was inducted into the George Fox University Sports Hall of Fame.
   Survivors include: wife Elenita of Newberg; son Dorlan of Wichita, Kan.; daughters, Andrea Bales, Thea Cowley of Portland and Marla Godfrey of Kona, Hawaii; sister Dora Cronyn of Camarillo, Calif.; grandchildren, Micah and Andrew Bales and Carolyn and Ben Cowley; nine nieces and seven nephews.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the George Bales Gym Fund at Rose Valley Friends Church or to the athletic department at George Fox University.

Jim D. Prebe
  Former Newberg resident Jim Duane Prebe died Oct. 14, 2004, at a Salem hospital. He was 45.
   He was born Oct. 8, 1959, to Edward Jr. and Delores (Walker) Prebe in Lake City, Minn. He moved with his family in 1965 to Tualatin and in 1969 to Sherwood. He attended local schools through the 10th-grade in Sherwood. He helped his father repair small engines and automotive engines. He also drove a shuttle for the McMinnville Charter Airporter for several years and worked at Valley View Memorial Park for a time. On Dec. 21, 1989, he married Martha Hoover in Vancouver, Wash., and they made their home in Newberg. In 1996 they moved to Keizer. In 2002 they moved to Molalla, where they were living at the time of his death.
   He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He enjoyed horses and cattle and had ducks on his farm. He loved his family.
   Survivors include: wife Martha of Molalla; son James of Molalla; daughter Tanaia Prebe of Molalla; brothers, Patrick of Newberg, Ronald of McMinnville, Jerry of Salem and Larry of Lake City, Minn.; and sister Jo Aebischer of Newberg.
   A vigil service was held Sunday at Attrell’s Newberg Chapel. A funeral mass was held Monday at St. Peter Catholic Church with Father Jim Nibler officiating. Committal followed at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Margaret Schwab
   Newberg resident Margaret Schwab died Oct. 14, 2004. She was 92.
   She was born March 21, 1912, in Roy. She married Zeno Schwab on June 8, 1941. He preceded her in death in 1957. She was a homemaker. She lived in Roy, Gervais, Hillsboro and St. Paul. She lived in Newberg the past 15 years.
   She enjoyed flower gardening, crocheting and traveling.
   Survivors include: sister Maryann Hermens of Cornelius and several nieces and nephews.
   A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at St. Peter Catholic Church, 2315 N. Main St. A private burial will be held at St. Francis Cemetery in Roy.

Frank L. Chambers
   Newberg resident Frank L. Chambers died Oct. 5, 2004, in Newberg. He was 89.
   He was born in September 1915 in Salem. He moved to  Eugene in 1925 with family upon the death of his father. He attended public schools and earned a business administration degree from the University of Oregon in 1938. He was pledged to honorary fraternities Alpha Kappa Psi and Beta Gamma Sigma. He earned a master’s degree in economics. He was employed as an associate economist for the Bonneville Power Administration in Portland. In 1943 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served as a paratrooper in 11th Airborne Division serving in the South Pacific.
   In 1947 he married Thelma Douglas and the couple moved to Amity. He was employed as a cashier at Bank of Amity and later as an assistant manager of U.S. National Bank. He served two terms as mayor of Amity.
   In 1967 he moved to Portland and worked for U.S. National Bank and taught banking classes at night under American Institute of Banking for five years. He retired from U.S. National Bank in 1981, then an assistant vice president. He lived in Newberg a little more than a year.
   Survivors include: wife Thelma; daughters, Candace Green of Utah and Tamara Knapp of Portland; brother Richard of Eugene; sister Betty Dolan of Palo Alto, Calif.; and 14 grandchildren.
   He was proceeded in death by daughter Cassandra.
   His remains were cremated and he was interred at Finley-Sunset Hills cemetery in Portland.

William E. Bales
   Longtime Newberg resident Bill E. Bales died Oct. 12, 2004. He was 74.
   He was born June 7, 1930, to Dorothy and Jesse Bales in Tillamook. When he was 7 years old his family moved to Alpine and at 14 to the Newberg and Dundee area, where he has lived the past 60 years. He grew up working in his parents’ business, the Bales Brothers Feed & Seed Store, and attending Newberg High School, where he competed in wrestling, placing first runner-up his senior year. At 18 he earned his pilot’s license, beginning a lifetime of flying. He studied at George Fox College (now George Fox University). On June 1, 1951, he married Joann Morter.
   He worked for Portland General Electric for 15 years before becoming an independent business owner. He owned several dry-cleaning businesses, a technology-development company and a construction business. He also worked for a time as a test pilot.
   He is known for his many years of service, particularly through Newberg Friends Church, which he attended for 60 years. He and his wife were youth leaders at the church and with the Newberg High School Christian Club for 17 years. They participated in and led Lay Witness Missions, a volunteer church renewal ministry and throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond, traveling to interested churches as far away as Nebraska.
   Survivors include: mother Dorothy Ward; wife Joann; daughters, Julie Ponder, Paula Cathers and Karen Benham; son David; and 15 grandchildren.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Newberg Friends Church.

Marilyn L. Bergstrom
   Newberg resident Marilyn Lea Bergstrom died Oct. 9, 2004, at a Newberg care facility. She was 71.
   She was born March 30, 1933, to James and Lola (Nixon) Jackson in Norton, Kan. She moved to Newberg in 1938 and graduated in 1953 from Newberg High School. She attended Northwest Business School. She went to work for First Christian Church under Pastor Willie White. She left that position and went to work at Robertson’s Drapery in Portland for 13 years. She moved to Idaho and married Lawrence Bergstrom in Caldwell. He preceded her in death in January 1978, after which she returned to Newberg. She worked for Tektronix and at several other jobs before settling at Oakwood Country Care Center in McMinnville, retiring in 1997.
   She enjoyed bingo, game nights with the church women, knitting, crosswords and puzzles.
   Survivors include: brothers, Gene Jackson of Tigard and Charles Jackson of The Dalles; sisters, June Warnock of Milwaukie and Doris Bishop of Woodburn; 13 nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews.
   A memorial service was held Oct. 13 at Newberg Christian Church with Pastor Lee Shafer officiating. A concluding service was private at Valley View Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Newberg.

Bessie A. Huffman
   Longtime Chehalem Mountain resident Bessie Anna Rohde Huffman died Oct. 5, 2004, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 93.
   She was born Aug. 29, 1911, to Lucille and Clarence Hintz in Rainer. She moved to Chehalem Mountain when she was 2 years old. She married Henry Rohde in 1933.  He preceded her in death in 1971. She married Ozro Huffman in 1988. He preceded her in death in 1994. She spent 75 years of her life in the same neighborhood on Chehalem Mountain.
   Survivors include: brothers, Ralph Hintz and Emil Hintz; sister Ruby Pipkin; children, Alfred Rohde, Barbara Brown, Joanne Leggett, and Thomas Rohde; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
   A family memorial service will be held today (Saturday).

Jessie E. Hutchens
   Jessie Evelyn Hutchens died Oct. 9, 2004, at her Newberg home. She was 69.
   She was born July 26, 1935, to Cyrenus and Crystal (Surprise) Cox in Reeds Spring, Mo. She moved in 1943 to Portland, where she attended local schools including Polytech for Girls. On Aug. 29, 1952, she married Marvin Hutchens in Portland. They moved to Olympia for two years when her husband was drafted into the U.S. Army.
   They returned to Portland in 1954, moved to Sherwood a year later and in 1956 moved to Newberg, where they stayed six years. The couple moved to Dundee in 1961 and called the Red Hills their home until 1967, when they returned to Newberg, where they have since resided.
   For many years, she worked for Stayton Cannery near Dayton and later Allen Fruit in Newberg for three years, before working for a filbert processing plant in Newberg until her retirement in 2001.
Her many interests included angels, photography and Elvis memorabilia. She enjoyed food and sweets.
   Survivors include: husband Marvin of Newberg; sons, Dale of Salem, Rick of Newberg and Dan and Joe of Carlton; brothers, Alfred and Robert Cox of Yuma, Ariz., and David Cox of Michigan; sister Beulah Bonar of Yuma; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by brother Dusty Cox.
   A cryptside service was held Oct. 14 at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg with Pastor Sid Johnson officiating.

Bonnie J. Astleford
   Former Newberg resident Bonnie Joy Astleford died Oct. 10, 2004, at Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro. She was 85.
   She was born Sept. 21, 1919, to Isaac and Dessie (Doney) Newton in McMinnville, where she was raised and received her education. She married Paul Astleford June 19, 1938, at Chehalem Center Friends Church in Newberg. They made their home in Newberg, later living in Condon, Cloverdale and Tillamook. The couple moved after retirement in 1964 to Oceanside, where they stayed 35 years. In 1999 they moved to the Alterra Wynwood Residential Community in Forest Grove. They moved after eight months there to their son’s home. For the last 11 months they lived at the Tender Touch Adult Foster Care Home in Hillsboro. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in June.
   She was a homemaker. While living in Oceanside she was a charter member of Netarts Friends Church and the Women’s Missionary Society. She enjoyed crocheting, jigsaw puzzles and flower and vegetable gardening.
   Survivors include: husband Paul of Hillsboro; sons Marvin of Hillsboro, Richard of Oceanside and Ronald of Tillamook; daughter Marie Stock of Burney, Calif.; brothers, Myron Newton of Lewiston, Idaho, Zane Newton of Wenatchee, Wash., and Gene Newton of Canby; sisters Violet Baker of Quincy, Wash., and Gladys Strait of Lyle, Wash.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by: parents, Isaac and Dessie Newton; brother Perry Newton; and son Robert Astleford in 1958.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at West Chehalem Friends Church in Newberg with Pastor Paul Almquist officiating. Family and friends are invited to a reception at the church following the service. A private family interment will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Joyce Miller
  Former Newberg resident Joyce Miller died Oct. 4, 2004, at her home in Lafayette. She was 63.
   She was born Aug. 9, 1941, to Gunnar and Clarice (Cassiba) Sundberg in Warren, Minn. She grew up in Strandquist, Minn., and went to high school in International Falls, Minn. After high school, in the late 1950s, she went to beauty school in International Falls.  She married Michael Miller on June 27, 1980. The couple moved to St. Paul, Minn., and then to Pensacola, Fla. She moved to Spain and was overseas while her husband was in the Navy. She lived in Rice Lake, Wis., until 1999, when she moved to Newberg. She worked for Fred Meyer. She later moved to Lafayette.
   Survivors include: daughters, Dawn Smith of Lafayette and Denise Winter of Dundee; sons, Mark Miller of Lafayette and Bruce Noblet of Sherwood; sister Pat Erickson of Crookston, Minn.; and six grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael, and by sisters, Aggie Bliese and Donna Donarski.
   A service was held Oct. 8 at the Chapel of Macy & Son in McMinnville with the Rev. Tom Struck officiating.

Mildred “Mickey” Alexander
   Newberg resident Mildred “Mickey” Alexander died Oct. 6, 2004. She was 75.
   She was born April 23, 1929, to Shirley and Oria (Carpenter) Harmon in Holridge, Neb. She grew up in Portland, spending many hours rollerskating at Oaks Park. She graduated from Cleveland High School in Portland and attended Portland Community College. She married Donnald Alexander in 1969, and they lived in Hillsboro. They moved to Tigard in 1974.
   She enjoyed traveling for six years before moving to Newberg. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking and koi fish.
   Survivors include: husband Donnald of Newberg; sons, Jack Unger and Michael Lee; sisters, E. Delight Carmichael; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by sister Arliss Zink.
   A memorial service was held Oct. 11 at First Presbyterian Church in Newberg.

Lillian J. Koskela
   Former Newberg resident Lillian Josephine Koskela died Sept. 25, 2004, in Carleton, Minn. She was 89.
   She was born July 11, 1915, in Gowan, Minn. She lived in the Newberg area for about 30 years.
   Survivors include: daughters, Mariann Byers, Alice Endicott, Janet Hamel, Barb Morris, Darlene Miller and Terri Milholm; sons, Richard Koskela, Will Koskela and Chuck Noack; 26 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and sister Elina Johnson.
   She was preceded in death by husband William Koskela; son Floyd Koskela; daughter Susan Stacey; two brothers and one sister.
  A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 30 at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in McMinnville.

Betty J. Torland
   Champoeg native Betty Jean Torland died Oct. 2, 2004, in Tigard. She was 81.
   She was born Dec. 28, 1922, in Champoeg. She worked in real estate and was a lifetime resident of Yamhill and Washington counties.
   She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary post in Tigard, of the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and of the Catholic Daughters.
   Survivors include: son Mike O’Rourke of Lake Grove; daughter Patricia O’Rourke-McGinnis of Joliet, Ill; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   A service was held Oct. 7 at Young’s Funeral Home in Tigard. A private internment was held at the Crescent Grove Cemetery in Tigard.

Sherman S. Zemke
   Newberg native Sherman S. Zemke died Oct. 3, 2004, at his home in Prineville. He was 50.
   He was born Sept. 11, 1954, to Herman and Joyce (Scott) Zemke in Newberg. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1972. He attended Chemeketa Community College in Salem, earning an associate’s degree in forestry. He moved to Lebanon to work for the U.S. Forest Service. He married Joyce Miller and the couple lived in locations throughout central Oregon before settling in the Bend and Prineville area.
   He was a member of the Lions Club in Burns. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and exploring the Ochoco Mountains. He enjoyed golf, raising his family and spending time with his granddaughter. His family said he cultivated the land and treasured his friends.
   Survivors include: wife Joyce of Prineville; son Scott of Burns; daughter Missy McVay of Redmond; brother Sam of Newberg; sister Cindy Burns of Newberg; granddaughter Sage McVay of Redmond; nine nieces and two nephews.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at First Baptist Church in Prineville with Pastor Barry Gridley officiating.

Nita P. `Sis' Herring
   Former Newberg resident Nita Pearl “Sis” Herring died Sept. 27, 2004, after a long battle with cancer. She was 79.
   She was born Sept. 14, 1925, to Pearl and Menford Poteet in Commerce, Okla. The family moved to Oregon in 1935. She grew up in Newberg and graduated from high school here. She was employed during World War II in the offices of Fort Vancouver in Vancouver, Wash. She was employed at AAA in Portland for a number of years and worked at Newberg Ace Hardware as a buyer and seller for 25 years before retiring.
   She married Robert Herring on Oct. 3, 1948, in Dundee. He preceded her in death in April 1987. Afterward she spent some time in Carson City, Nev.
   She enjoyed traveling and went on several cruises. She belonged to several bowling leagues. She was a charter member of the North Santiam Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary.
   Survivors include: daughters, Barbara Mahlum of Salem and Pamela Swisher of Eagle Point; grandchildren, David Mahlum of Molalla, Angela Allen, Scott Mills and Marc Swisher of Springfield, and Troy Swisher and Katie Shepard of Eagle Point; seven great-grandchildren; brothers Joe Poteet of Mt. Jackson, Va., and Edward Poteet of Lebanon; sister Norma Long of Mill City; and numerous nephews and nieces.
   Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 6 at Dundee Pioneer Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will follow at J’s Restaurant in Newberg.

Orpha A. Mealue
   Orpha A. Mealue died Sept. 25, 2004, at her home in McMinnville. She was 69.
   She was born Dec. 13, 1934, to Roscoe and Louise (Pritchett) Tupper in Yamhill. She was raised and educated in Pike and in Yamhill. She married John Mealue on June 14, 1952, in San Louis Obispo, Calif. They moved to Yamhill. They lived in Dayton from 1968 to 1974, moved to Bend and returned to Dayton in 1977. She returned to the family farm in Pike in 1979. She moved to McMinnville in 1993. She was a supervisor at Allen Fruit (now FMC/Allen Machinery).
   She enjoyed quilting, sewing, crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren.
   Survivors include: daughters, Sherry Parker of McMinnville, Jennifer Horton of Savage, Minn., and Karia Lay of Scotts Mills; son Brian of Crooked River Ranch; sister Elzora Blackstone of Troy, Mont.; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
   A private service was held. Internment was at Pike Cemetery in Yamhill.

Celia A. Newhall
   Celia Alice Newhall died Sept. 26, 2004, at a Newberg care facility. She was 88.
   She was born July 2, 1916, to Wallace and Iona (Hoover) Cochran in Decatur, Ill. After graduating business school in 1936, she went to work in Washington, D.C., for the Social Security Administration. In July 1939 she traveled to Canada, met Paul Newhall and planned to marry in a year. He could not cross the border into the United States, where they had hoped to wed, Canada having just been drawn into World War II and needing eligible soldiers. They instead married on June 28, 1940, in Winnipeg, Canada, and he obtained a passport as the husband of a U.S. citizen.
   They moved to Arizona in 1950. They moved to Page, Ariz., in 1959, the year the Bureau of Reclamation founded the town. She graduated from Grand Canyon College in Phoenix, Ariz., in 1962 and earned a masters degree from Northern Arizona University in 1968. She taught elementary school. The couple retired in 1973.
   They relocated to the Glendale, Ariz., area to be near family. They raised goats and chickens. In 1984 they moved to Cottonwood, staying there until 1989, when they moved to Portland to be near family. They moved into the Friendsview Manor in 1994. On June 17, 2003, her husband preceded her in death.
   Survivors include: daughters, Susan Lyon of Oregon City and Joanne Ranson of Wilsonville; son John of Prescott, Ariz.; and sister Helen Nelson of Spokane.
   She was preceded in death by two infant sons, Charles and Harvey, and brother Myron Cochran.
   Chapel viewing and visitation hours are noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Newberg Free Methodist Church with Pastor Shaun McNay officiating. A concluding service will follow at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Robert R. U’Ren
   Newberg resident Robert R. U’Ren died in an auto accident Sept. 20, 2004. He was 73.
   He was born Jan. 25, 1931, in Seattle.
Survivors include: wife Doreen Kyle; daughters, Marie U’Ren, Laura Crawford and Jody Heairet; and sister Sue Nichols.
   He was cremated. No memorial service will be held per his request.

Laurence F. Bourland
   Laurence Fenn Bourland died Sept. 22, 2004, at a Newberg care facility. He was 90.
   He was born Aug. 15, 1914, to Fenn and Sally (Medley) Bourland in Clarendon, Texas. There he grew up and graduated from high school in 1932. He attended one year of college before starting farming. On Oct. 2, 1934, he married Gertrude Leona Roush in Pampa, Texas, and they made their home in the Mclean, Texas, area.
   In the early 1950s he and his wife moved to the McMinnville area, then back to Texas, and six months later decided the dust was too bad and returned to Oregon permanently. For years he was a strawberry farmer near McMinnville, moving to Newberg in 1968. On Sept. 17, 2002, his wife preceded him in death.
   He enjoyed music and played the trumpet, piano, organ and sang. In his early adulthood in Texas he would sing at funerals.     He sang in church throughout his life. He was a founding member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Newberg. He loved to fish, especially river fishing for salmon, and enjoyed trying to find things with his metal detector. A farmer for life, he enjoyed growing things and raised beautiful roses.
   Survivors include: sons, Fenn of Aloha and Charles of Eugene; daughter Betty Sue Sporleder of Walla Walla, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held Sept. 23 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Newberg with Pastor John Mahaffy officiating. Committal is private at Riverview Abbey Mausoleum, Portland.

Agueda Aleman
   Agueda Aleman of Dundee died Sept. 18, 2004, at Southwestern Medical Center in Lawton, Okla. She was 68.
   Survivors include: husband Martin Romero; sons, Leonardo, Aurelio and Rojelio Romero; daughters Petra, Esmeralda, Enedelia, Norma and Anna Romero; brothers Juventino and Noe Aleman; sisters, Eufemia Mendez and Agustina Molina; 26 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Francisco and Florentino Aleman.
   A funeral service will be held Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors in McMinnville. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park in McMinnville.

Dorothy E. Edwards
   Dorothy Elma Edwards died Sept. 13, 2004, at her home in Newberg. She was 94.
   She was born June 8, 1910, to Charles and Florence (Fickle) Burch in Oakland, Calif. Her parents had divorced and her mother had remarried by the time Dorothy was 5. During her senior year in high school, she moved to Stockton, Calif., to help her brother and sister-in-law with their two children. She met Joseph Edwards, who worked with her brother on the Santa Fe Railroad. They married two months later, on April 30, 1928, at her mother’s home. She was 17 and he was 19; they were married 76 years.
   In January 1929 she attended a revival meeting put on by Wilbur Smith. She accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and was later baptized at First Baptist Church in Stockton, Calif. The couple moved to Denver in 1931 and enrolled at Denver Bible Institute. While her husband went on to become a professor at Denver Theological Seminary, she served as librarian. Upon retirement in 1972, the couple moved to Harlingen, Texas, where they farmed organically and taught Bible classes.
   In 1987 the couple moved to the Northwest to be near family, settling at Friendsview Retirement Community in 1995. Her husband preceded her in death on May 23, 2004.
   Survivors include: grandchildren, Heidi Madsen of Portland, Sonja Herigstad of Dundee, Carl Madsen of Portland and Victor Madsen of Uganda, East Africa; sister Bille Wilson; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Natalie, Katie and Eric Herigstad of Dundee, and Hanna, Joelle, Rodney and Victoria Madsen of Uganda, East Africa; nieces Virginia Butt and Rae; nephews, Bill Brewer and Max Drake; and those who have come to know and appreciate her where she has lived and worked.
She was preceded in death by daughter Marilyn Ruth Madsen in 1962; sister Mildred; and brother John Burch.
   A memorial service was held Sept. 22 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastors Jay Gilbertson and Larry Smithwick officiating. Committal was private at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Lois M. Kennedy
   Lois Maxine Kennedy of Lafayette died Sept. 10, 2004, at Willamette Valley Hospital. She was 78.
   She was born July 28, 1926, in Jetmore, Kan. She married Lowell Kennedy on April 28, 1945. Her family said she was a wonderful wife and a loving mother and grandmother.
   Survivors include: daughter Debra Morter of Denver; son Michael Kennedy of Redwood City, Calif.; granddaughter Jodi Robinson; grandsons, Steven Kennedy and Patrick Morter, both of Denver.
   She was preceded in death by granddaughter Kelly Robinson.
   No service will be held per her request.

Jack S. Edwards
   Newberg native Jack S. Edwards died Sept. 11, 2004, at his daughter’s home in McMinnville. He was 76.
   He was born July 16, 1928, to Winfield and Harriet (Versteeg) Edwards in Newberg. He attended Pleasantdale School House and was taught by his oldest sister through the eighth-grade.  He graduated form Dayton High School in 1946. He joined the U.S. Army in World War II and was a member of the 101st Airborne Division. After his military tour, he returned to Yamhill County and worked at the Spaulding Pulp and Paper mill in Newberg.
   He married Dorothy Trunde on Nov. 12, 1950, in Newberg. In 1957 he purchased Edwards Market in Dayton from his parents; he operated it until 1974. He also served as the Dayton fire chief and was a member of the Dayton school board. He returned to the paper mill in 1974, retiring from there in 1993.
He lived on the family farm on Stringtown Road his whole life. The farm was honored as a Century Farm Sept. 4.
   An avid aviation enthusiast, he owned an Aeronica Chief airplane after World War II. He also enjoyed motorcycles and owned a Harley Davidson. In his last six years he enjoyed attending Dayton football games and followed Portland Trail Blazer basketball. He participated in the Dustin’s Run/Walk in McMinnville, which memorializes his grandson, Dustin Klaus, who died in 1998. His family said he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
   Survivors include: wife Dorothy of Dayton; daughters, Debbie Klaus and Karen Edwards of McMinnville; sons, Steve and Bob of Dayton; sisters, Margie Morgan and Lucy Tedd of Dayton; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by grandson Dustin Klaus; son Michael; and sisters, Pinky Langlitz and Dormi Groth.
   A service was held Sept. 15 at the chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors in McMinnville. He was buried at the St. James Catholic Cemetery.

Robert P. French
   Former Newberg resident Robert Paul French of Milton-Freewater died Sept. 10, 2004. He was 78.
   He was born July 13, 1926, to Raymond and Grace (Allen) French in Jamestown, N.Y. While a senior in high school he joined the Army Air Force Cadets and upon graduation spent time in Fort Myers and Amarillo, Texas, during World War II. His last year in the service was spent in occupied Italy, where he started a baseball team with prisoners of war and Army officers.
   After service, he attended East Stroudsberg University, graduating in 1950. In 1955 he graduated from Cornell University with a masters degree in secondary education. He earned his masters degree in guidance and counseling from the University of North Dakota in 1965.
On Aug. 21, 1955, he married Ann Rhone in Wyalusing, Penn.     They moved to Oregon in 1962, to Grand Forks, N.D., in 1964, and returned to Oregon in 1965. He moved in 1967 to La Grande and to Newberg in 1981. He was head of the counseling department at Newberg High School. He retired in 1990 and moved to Milton-Freewater.
   He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, gardening, airplanes and flying, hockey and traveling. He coached many baseball and soccer teams.
    He was a member of the Pioneer Methodist Church in Walla Walla, Wash., and a member of American Legion Post 24 and VFW 3456 of Milton-Freewater.
    Survivors include: wife Ann; daughter Kim Slippy of Summerville; sons, Ted of Colorado Springs, Colo., Eric of Huber Heights, Ohio, and Bruce of Sparks, Nev.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother Ray of Richland, Wash.; and many nephews and nieces.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ken and sister Nancy.
    A celebration of his life was held Sept. 15 at the Pioneer United Methodist Church in Walla Walla with pastor Leon Alden officiating.

Maurine G. Baldwin
   Former Newberg resident Maurine Gregory Baldwin died Sept. 5, 2004, in Portland. She was 94.
   She was born March 26, 1910, to Moore and Caroline (Mowery) Gregory in Roseburg. She attended Reed College and Oregon State College (now Oregon State University). She worked for the Oregon Department of Education and at Portland State University. She married George Baldwin in 1939. He preceded her in death in 1999.
   She volunteered at Nature Conservancy and OSPIRG.
   Survivors include: brother Greg Baldwin of Lake Oswego; sister Suzie Baldwin Kuerschner of Portland; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A service was held Sept. 11, 2004, at Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Barbara R. Reemer
   Barbara Ruth Reemer died Sept. 10, 2004, at Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin. She was 54.
   She was born Feb. 14, 1950, to Roland and Marion (Meineke) McTimmonds in Portland. She grew up in Sherwood and attended St. Paul Lutheran Church School and graduated from Sherwood High School in 1969. She was born with a congenital heart defect and was the recipient of much support from her community over the years, from the fire department, her church and local businesses. On June 15, 1985, she was married to Clarke Reemer and they lived in Portland for six years. In 1991 the couple moved to a rural area of Woodburn, where she enjoyed bird watching.
   She was a church volunteer and Sunday school secretary. She sold Avon and provided childcare for friends and family. In later years she spent time gathering family genealogy. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Woodburn.
   She enjoyed baking, cake decorating, cooking, quilting and embroidery. She also enjoyed listening to music, mainly jazz.
   Survivors include: husband Clarke of Woodburn; mother Marion McTimmonds of Sherwood; aunts, Teresa Peters of Sherwood and Anita Moncrief of Prineville; and eight nieces and nephews.
   A funeral service was held Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sherwood with Pastor Bruce Zagel officiating. A concluding service followed at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Sherwood.

Sept. 11, 2004

Lorraine F. Shine
   Lorraine Faye Shine died Sept. 4, 2004, at her home on Chehalem Mountain. She was 78.
   She was born July 25, 1926, to Oscar and Thessel (Grover) Payne in Emmons County, N.D. There she grew up and received her early education. She assisted with teaching during World War II to fill the need left by the teachers serving their country. In 1947 she moved to Portland, where she worked for the Portland Rose and Glove Factory. She attended both Laurelwood Academy and Portland Union Adventist Academy, where she completed high school in two years graduating in 1951 with honors. In 1953, she graduated from Walla Walla College with a degree in nursing.
   On Dec. 16, 1953, she married Jack Shine in Newberg and the couple made their home on a farm in Hillsboro. She worked at McMinnville General Hospital for several years and then remained at home as a full-time mother to raise her family and assist with the operation of the farm.
   Her family said she was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was always there to help those in need. A member of the Laurel Wood Seventh day Adventist Church, she was also an avid gardener who made flower arrangements for her church.
   Survivors include: husband Jack of Hillsboro; sons, Randall of Gaston and Valden of Hillsboro; daughter Jennifer Eddy of Hillsboro; sister Vina LaFave of Pollock, S.D.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
   A funeral service was held Sept. 8 at Newberg Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pastor Richard Morris officiating. Concluding Service followed at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Laurel.

Arthur S. Rathkey
   Dr. Arthur “Art” Stanley Rathkey died Sept. 8, 2004, at his home in McMinnville. He was 84.
   He was born April 15, 1920, to John and Amy (Watts) Rathkey in Astoria. He spent his early years helping his father as a machinist and welder. He graduated valedictorian of Camas Valley High School in 1938 and received a chemistry degree from Willamette University in 1942. He received his masters in biochemistry and biology from Oregon State University in 1943 and graduated from the University of Oregon medical school in 1946. After several rotations, he set up a private practice in Grand Forks, N.D., until the Korean War. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 and then in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1953. He was in pediatric practice in Muncie, Ind., from 1953-1959. He taught at the University of Minnesota. He married Roba Mae Hoag on April 23, 1949, in Chaska, Minn.
   He published eight scientific papers, mostly dealing with body chemistry. He received a patent on the hubless infusion needle to correct electrolyte imbalances in children; this invention was instrumental in saving many infants’ lives and is still used today.
   His hobbies included growing conifers of all types, fishing for steelhead and art work. He was a member of the Kiwanis, Men’s Garden Club, Home Orchard Society, Machintosh Computer Club and Head Start. He was a member of the McMnnville United Methodist church.
   Survivors include: wife Roba of McMinnville; sons, Craig of Dundee, John of Petaluma, Calif., and Douglas of Portland; daughter Margaret Nava of Newberg; brother Eldrid of Dallas; sister Dorothy Schattenkerk of Ten Mile; and seven grandchildren.
   A service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at the First Baptist Church in McMinnville with the Rev. Steve Ross officiating. He will be buried at the family cemetery.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Kiwanis programs for kids.


Sept. 8, 2004

Harold L. Mitchell
   Harold Lewis Mitchell died Aug. 31, 2004, at his Newberg residence. He was 83.
   He was born Sept. 4, 1920, to Harry and Mary (Schramm) Mitchell in Wilkes Barre, Penn. There he grew up and attended school. After graduating and attending two years of college he became a coal inspector in local coal mines. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in November 1942. On Aug. 16, 1943, he married L. Georgean Talley in El Paso, Texas.
   He served in the European Theater during World War II, where he was a radioman and a gunner serving with the 376th Bomb Group. He received a Purple Heart for injuries, a Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars, the Bronze Star Medal and two Air Medals with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He was honorably discharged August 1945. He returned home and worked in the coal mines for several years.
   In 1949 he and his wife moved to Coos Bay. He worked at several jobs before they moved to the Sacramento, Calif., area, and then back to Oregon, where they lived in the Portland area. He worked for the State of Oregon for 26 years, retiring in 1983. He lived in Lake Oswego for 38 years. His wife preceded him in death in April 2001. In 2002 Harold moved to Newberg where he lived with his daughter until his death.
   He attended St. Paul Lutheran Church. His family said he was a devoted father, grandfather and father-in-law. He loved singing and was a member of the Tualatin Harmony Masters, a barbershop quartet. He was a dedicated bowler. He also loved the piano, was an avid photographer, and loved electronics, especially repairing radio equipment.
   Survivors include: daughters, Judy Keena of Ashland and Lisa Rutter of Newberg; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by son, Gary, and daughter, Diane Latona.
   A graveside service with interment and military honors was held Sept. 7 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.


Sept. 4, 2004

Lloyd E. Ogden
   Newberg resident Lloyd Edward Ogden died Aug. 29, 2004, at Friendsview Retirement Community in Newberg. He was 74.
   He was born April 29, 1930, to Glenn and Nellie (Ferguson) Ogden in Towanda, Ill. He lived in the Bloomington, Ill., area most his life. On Sept. 9, 1951, he married Hazel Mathis in Bloomington. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict in 1951-52. Later he worked for a farm supply company, a seed company and drove a school bus in Bloomington. He retired and moved to Oregon in 1992.
   He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg. He enjoyed traveling and the outdoors, especially horseback riding.
   Survivors include: wife Pauline of Newberg; son Louis of Tualatin; brother Dan of Haworth, Ill.; sisters, Hazel Durflinger of Bloomington, Ill., Marjorie Barnard of Valparaiso, Ind., and Virginia Vaughn of Mesa, Ariz.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and five nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by sister Helen Barnard.
   A funeral service was held Sept. 1 at Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg with pastors Steve Estrem and Norm Olson officiating. Committal followed at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Adeline C. Potts
   Adeline Carmen Potts died Aug. 27, 2004, in Sherwood. She was 72.
   She was born May 16, 1932, to Fred and Epifania (Vigil) Montoya in Walsenburg, Colo. The family moved to Billings, Mont., when she was 14. She later moved to Long Beach, Calif., where she married Donald Potts in 1976. The couple moved to Sherwood in 1987.
She loved to cook, garden, play bingo with friends and spend time with grandchildren.
   Survivors include: husband Donald of Sherwood; daughters, Loretta and Elizabeth Melendrez, both of Pendleton; sister Naida Guzman of Idaho Falls, Idaho; three grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: son Adolph Melendrez, Jr.; sister Rosalie DeWald; and granddaughter Rene Melendrez.
   A service was held Sept. 2 at Young’s Funeral Home in Tigard.

Waldo E. Summers
   Waldo Ernest Summers died Aug. 27, 2004, at his Lafayette farm. He was 79.
   He was born Nov. 11, 1924, to Guy and Blanche (Wigent) Summers in Ainsworth, Neb. There he grew up and went to school. He served a term in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater as a machinist and an engine repairman. He was honorably discharged in July 1946. He returned to Nebraska and farmed there while working for a farm implement equipment company. While delivering propane gas he was injured by gas ingestion and had breathing problems the rest of his life. He moved to Oregon in 1975 and worked for Stollers Turkey Farm in Dayton and owned his own farm. On Dec. 11, 1976, he married Amelia Morelon. They made their home in Lafayette.
   His hobby was working on his farm. He was working on his pickup when he died, apparently from a heart attack.
   Survivors include: wife Amelia of Lafayette; daughter Karen Delaney of Fullerton, Neb.; brother Earl of Arnold, Neb.; sisters Mable Bortz of Greggory, S.D., Sharon Hiemstra of Wihner, S.D., and Rachel Kennedy of Newberg; grandchildren Megon Arellano of Iowa and Travis Delaney of Lincoln, Neb.; and two great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by sons Gordon and Kevin.
   A funeral service will be held Thursday at the Hoch  Funeral Home in Ainsworth, Neb.
