Anniversaries

Leslie
   Millard and Carol Leslie of Newberg will celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary Sunday at home with their children and grandchildren.
   The couple married July 23, 1944, at First Baptist Church in Newberg. Their children include Carolyn Proehl of Tacoma; Dianne Richmond of Scappoose; Beth Swain of Salem; Laurie Comfort of Newberg; Dave Leslie of Newberg; and Lisa Leslie of Newberg. They also have nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   The couple met while in college at Willamette University. Carol grew up in Newberg on her parent’s farm. Millard and Carol moved back to take over the farm property in 1955. Carol spent more than 40 years teaching piano. Millard taught junior high and high school music, drama and math for 26 years before starting a new career in real estate for another 26 years.
   The couple attended Newberg Baptist Church for a number of years before switching to Newberg Christian Church. Millard directed choir at both churches while Carol served in a variety of roles such as deaconess, pianist and children’s church teacher.

Strait
   Former Newberg residents Paul and Gladys Strait will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary Sunday at their family farm.
   The couple were married June 19, 1937, at the Chehalem Center Friends Church of Newberg. They were high school sweethearts and graduated from Newberg High School.
   Paul built the couple’s first home in Newberg. During the next few years, they lived in Salem, Molalla, Garberville, Calif., and Oceanside. Paul worked for various companies including Salem Iron Works, the Brooks sawmill, Crown Zellerbach in Oregon City, Diamond Lumber Company in Tillamook and Coastal Machine Works.
   In 1965, Paul started his company, the Climax Portable Key Mill, now known as Climax Manufacturing and located in Newberg. In 1968, Paul sold Coastal Machine Works and the couple moved back to Newberg.
   Since Paul’s retirement in 1975, the couple have traveled to Pitcairn Island, the Queen Charlotte Islands and Alaska. Other hobbies include restoring antique vehicles and making objects out of wood.
Gladys enjoys making quilts, gardening and homemaking. The couple have helped out at Noble Pioneer Cemetery and belong to the Antique Engine and Tractor club and the Sauvie Island Yacht Club.
   Their five children include Paula Benham, Glenn Strait (now deceased), twins David and Donny Strait and Louise Sterling. They also have 19 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
The couple reside in Lyle, Wash.

Schaad
   Elmer and Louise Schaad celebrated on Sunday their 70th wedding anniversary at an open house at their home attended by about 70 guests. Included among the guests were those who were part of the original wedding party, Miriam Schaad Hausch and Loyd Schaad.
   The event was hosted by their children and grandchildren. The couple also has 11 great-grandchildren.
   The couple were married June 6, 1937, in the Ebenezer Methodist Church of Newberg.
   The couple has lived in Newberg their entire lives and farmed on Parrett Mountain for 60 years. They now reside in town.


Morland

   Robert and Marlys Morland celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday and Sunday at Augustana Lutheran Church in Portland and Joyful Servant Lutheran Church in Newberg.
   The celebrations were hosted by their children and grandchildren. Their children are sons Mark of San Mateo, Calif., and Tim of Newberg, and daughter Julie of Seattle. Their grandchildren are Alexdra, Sam and Aaron.
   The couple has lived in the Newberg area since 1971. Marlys was a teacher at Edwards Elementary School and Bob worked for the Soil Conservation Service in Portland.
   The two were members at Joyful Servant and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Literacy Education.

Fritscher
   G. Robert and Sharon Fritscher of Newberg will soon celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary.
   The couple, who have lived in the Newberg area for 16 years, were married on May 3, 1962, at a Catholic church in Fullerton, Calif.
Robert is a retired Army sergeant. Sharon is a retired personal banker. The couple have four children: sons, Scott of Detroit, Mich., and Robert of Newberg; and daughters Laura of Booneville, Mo., and Diana of Newberg. The couple also has six grandchildren.
   They attend St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg.

Lawson
   John and Levina Lawson of Dundee celebrated on March 31 their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends at a local restaurant.
   Their daughters, Janice Katke and Brenda Douglass, both of Newberg, hosted and son Robert Lawson of Portland attended the event.
   The couple were wed March 31, 1957, in Fairfield, Idaho. They have lived in Newberg and Dundee since 1958.
John is retired from Beaudry’s Inc. as a cabinet maker and painter.  He was also a proprietor of a saw sharpening business in Newberg. Levina has been a caretaker for John, who was disabled by a stroke.

Gamman
   Brian and Carolyn Gamman of Sherwood will celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary on May 17.
   The couple were married May 17, 1997, in Newberg.
   Brian is a machine operator and Carolyn a homemaker. The couple were high school sweethearts and attend Sherwood Bible Fellowship.

Hopper
   Howard and Lorene Hopper will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday with an open house hosted by their children at North Valley Friends Church, 4020 N. College St.
   The couple were married March 6, 1957, in Greenleaf, Idaho. Both are retired. They have four children: Debi Friesen of Happy Valley, Roni Vergets of Newberg, Kent Hopper of Wilsonville and Kyla Harn of Newberg. They have 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Lehman
   Al and Lois Lehman will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at 3 p.m. Feb. 18 at North Valley Friends Churh, 2040 N.E. College St.
   The couple were married Feb. 16, 1947, at the Rosedale Friends Church in Salem.
   The party will be hosted by their children, Elaine Davis of Fall City, Bev Tharp of Carlton, Linda Van Dyke of Yamhill, Ron Lehman of Newberg and Roy Lehman of Carlton.
   The couple have lived in the area since 1966. Al is a United States Postal Worker in Newberg and Dundee and Lois is a cook in the Dundee Elementary School cafeteria and is a childcare provider. They have 25 grandchildren.

Collins
   Irene and Bill Collins of Dundee recently celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary on Dec. 31.
   The couple were married Dec. 31, 1994, in Portland.

Burnett
   Andy and Amy Burnett of Newberg will celebrate their first anniversary on Sunday.
   The couple were married Dec. 17, 2005, at the Newberg Church of the Nazarene.
   Andy runs a machine shop. Amy is a nanny. The couple attend the Nazarene church where Andy teaches adult Sunday school and Amy is children’s church director. Both sing in the choir.
   The couple met through mutual friends and have lived in the area all their lives.

Piper
   George and Ruth Piper will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at North Valley Friends Church, 4020 N. College St. Their children, Dennis and Denise Piper and Deanna Cundiff, will host the open house.
   The couple were married Dec. 23, 1956, at the Chehalem Center Friends Church and have lived in the area for 50 years. Both are retired. They have three grandchildren.

Mills
   James and Sarah Mills of Newberg celebrated Dec. 3 their first wedding anniversary.
   The couple were married in Montensano, Wash. They are members of Newberg Christian Church.

Lundy
   John and Bonnie Lundy of Sherwood recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner.
   The couple were wed Nov. 12, 1946. They met as students at Franklin High School in Portland. They have five children: Dave, Dan, Phil and Joel. Daughter Kathy Lundy is deceased. They also have 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   John is a retired office manager at Alpenrose Dairy.   Bonnie is a retired secretary of a middle school in the Sherwood School District. The couple have lived on a working tree farm in Sherwood for the past 46 years and are members at Hinson Baptist Church in Portland. They were once lay leaders at the Sherwood Community Friends Church.

Morter
   Carol and Harry Morter of Newberg will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house event hosted by their children from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 18 at the First United Methodist Church, 1205 Deborah Road.
   The couple were married on Nov. 23, 1956, at the Newberg Methodist Church. They met while both were working at the Cameo Theater: Harry ran the projector, Carol sold concessions. Both were in college. After marriage the couple remained in Newberg until moving to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington in 1962. They returned to Newberg in 1977.
   They have seven children: Linda Campbell, Debra Walker, Mary Freeman, Robert Morter and Sharon Rousseau, all of Newberg; Richard Morter of Denver, Colo.; and Randall Morter of Phoenix, Ariz.; 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Harry is a Newberg High School and Linfield College graduate. He served in the United States Air Force for four years and in the paper mill industry for 15 years before starting Emveco Inc. in 1977. He later started H&R Video and Pacific Broadcasting in Newberg.
   Carol is an NHS graduate and she attended George Fox College (now George Fox University). She worked in insurance, at Krohn’s Appliance Center and presently is a receptionist at Friendsview Manor.
   The couple attends First United Methodist Church.

Sinner
   Clyde and Audrey Sinner of McMinnville are today (Wednesday) celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary with a surprise dinner gathering in Reno at the Eldorado hotel and casino.
   The event is being hosted by Jim and Lori Slate.
   The couple were married Oct. 18, 1946, in Portland.
They met when she worked for a cab company and he for a limousine company in an office building shared by the two businesses.
   The couple moved to Newberg in 1965 and to McMinnville one year ago. He worked as a police officer in Portland for 28 years; she was a secretary in the Newberg School District for 10 years.
   Children include: Lori Slate of Talent; Robert Sinner of Rochester, Wash.; and Kurt Sinner of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The couple has three grandchildren.

Christensen
   Bryan and Barb Christenson will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary Thursday.
   The couple were married Sept. 14, 1946, at the Presbyterian church in La Crescenta, Calif. They have four children, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
   The couple has lived in Newberg for 19 years. They retired in June, having served three years as pastors at Hillsboro Friends Church. Bryan has served as a pastor for 50 years. They remain active in their church.
   The couple were honored recently by their family at a picnic in Silverton.

Richey
   Stuart and Violet (Braithwaite) Richey celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with their family on Sept. 3 at Friendsview Manor.
   The couple were wed Sept. 3, 1936, at Lents Friends Church in Portland with the Rev. Calvin Choate presiding.
   Stuart Richey owned Richey’s Appliance & Service in Newberg and was employed at George Fox University as director of physical plant and grounds. Violet Richey was a teacher at Ewing Young and Dundee elementary schools and eventually worked as a secretary to the dean of administration at GFU.
   Since their retirement the couple travel, camp and serve on short-term missions trips. They now reside at Friendsview.
Children include: Milton Richey, deceased; Beverly Richey Poff; Meredith and Paul Morse; and Marilyn and Don Crover. They have nine grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Ross
   Larry and Dorothy Ross of Newberg celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Aug. 21 and spent a week with family and friends enjoying the sights and events around Newberg.
   The couple, both graduates of Centralia (Wash.) High School were married Aug. 21, 1951. After the wedding, the couple moved to Eugene and raised their four children in Salem and Portland.
   The couple moved to Newberg in May after 18 years in southern California. Their oldest daughter Debby Rondell is a stunt actress in Malibu. Daughter Lorri owns a pet grooming business in California. Their youngest daughter, Jenny Butchko, is a singer, songwriter and musician in Sandpoint, Idaho. Their son, Jayson, died in 1978 at the age of 19.

Schiele
   George and Becky Schiele of Newberg will celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary on Sept. 4.
   The couple grew up in Newberg and were married Sept. 4, 1971, in the bride’s parents yard in Newberg.
   They have two children, Jason Schiele and Megan King, both of Newberg. The couple’s first grandchild is due in March 2007.
   George is a city of Newberg employee and Becky works at the Ross Island Sand and Gravel Company in Portland.

Bauer
   Wilbur and Vivian Bauer of Dundee celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 23 at the Chehalem Armory Center.
   The couple were married Aug. 4, 1956, at Newberg First Christian Church. They have three children: Steven Bauer of Nyssa; Mark Bauer of Manuel, Texas; and Kristina Selten of Houston, Texas; and 10 grandchildren.
   Wilbur graduated from Newberg High School in 1951 and served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. He graduated from Portland State College (now Portland State University) in 1959 and taught at Wy’east High School for one year before going into construction. He formed a partnership with his brother David in 1968 and worked in construction until retiring in 1991.
   Vivian is a 1954 graduate of Dayton High School and has been the bookkeeper for Bauer Bros. Construction for 31 years.
   The couple have traveled around the world twice and enjoy cruising and visiting their children and grandchildren. They live in Dundee.
   Wilbur enjoys golfing, fishing and trapshooting and is a life member of the Newberg Gun Club. Vivian is the family genealogist and has enjoyed writing a history book of her family life.

Lyda
   John and Janet Lyda will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 13.
   The couple were married Aug. 14, 1956, at Amity Christian Church. They have four children: Jack, James and Jerrie Lyda of Newberg and Julie Lansford of Jamestown, Ohio. They also have 15 grandchildren.
   The couple have lived in Newberg for 50 years. John is a teacher and house builder. Janet plays the piano and the organ and is a secretary. The couple are active members of Newberg Friends Church, George Fox Auxiliary and Volunteers on Wheels.
   The celebration will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 13 at Newberg Friends Center. The couple requests no gifts.

Burch
   Ryan and Jodi Burch of La Grande celebrated their first wedding anniversary July 30 Sunday in St. Paul.
    Jodi Burch is a 2001 graduate of St. Paul High School. The couple attends Eastern Oregon University, where they met. They will soon move to the Salem area.

Boeckman
   Bruce and Sharon Boeckman, 20 year residents of Newberg, celebrated on June 27 their 25th anniversary.
   The couple were married June 27, 1981, at Milwaukie Christian Church. The couple met through Sharon’s brother, Bruce.
They couple has two children: Melissa Boeckman of Tualatin and Emily Boeckman of Newberg.
   Sharon Boeckman is employed at Suburban West Maintenance; her husband works at Tektronix. They attend Newberg Christian Church.

Post
   Glen and Mary Post celebrated their 40th anniversary July 1.
   The couple were married July 1, 1966, in Portland. They have two children: Shannon Whitaker of Newberg and Suzanne Kimble of Portland.
   They have lived in Newberg for 25 years. Glen Post served on the Newberg school board for 14 years; Mary Post was on the Newberg Planning Commission for seven. Together, they started the Newberg Community Theater. They also operated the Smith House Bed and Breakfast on College Street.
   Currently, he is the regional operations representative for Redflex Traffic Systems; she has worked for 41 years as a hairstylist.
   The couple love to travel and have visited the United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, China, Aruba, Belize, Mexico and Canada. They also enjoy spending time with their three grandchildren.

Sattler
   Rich and Sandy Sattler of Newberg celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary June 25.
   The couple married on June 25, 1966, in Tigard. They have four children, all of Newberg, and eight grandchildren.
   Residents of Newberg for 39 years, the couple met when their families were neighbors in Tigard. Both are retired and are members of the Catholic church and the Elks Club.

Barnes
   Thomas and Madeline Barnes of Newberg will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary April 23.
   The couple married on April 23, 1966, in Colorado Springs, Colo. They had two children together and raised two children from Madeline’s previous marriage.
   Residents of Newberg since 1995, Madeline works for Portland General Electric and Thomas is retired from the military and is now self-employed as a computer consultant.

Haugen
   Agnes and Harold Haugen of Woodburn celebrated their 50th anniversary Feb. 26.
   The couple were married on Feb. 26, 1956, in Portland. They have four children: Kim McCoy of Tualatin; Scott Haugen of Woodburn; Marc Haugen of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Jan Anderson of Hayden, Idaho. They have and seven grandchildren.
   Agnes works in nursing administration and Harold works in carpentry as a general contractor.
   The couple have lived in the Newberg area all their lives and met at a party.
