April 28, 2007
Robert L. Carothers
   Robert L. Carothers, formerly of Newberg, died of congestive heart failure on April 20, 2007, in Portland. He was 80.
   He was born Jan 19, 1927, in Aberdeen, S.D., to Percy and Violet (Olson) Carothers. He graduated from Newberg High School. He served in the U.S. Army and the merchant marines. He later worked as a plant superintendent for Consolidated Dairy (now Darigold).
   He was a member of the Elks and Moose clubs.
   Survivors include: daughter Toni Schnoor of Portland; granddaughter Brook Schnoor and great-grandchild Harlee Lovett.
   A private memorial service will be held. Disposition is by private inurnment.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Willamette Falls Hospice, Oregon City, OR 97045.

Theresa E. Jensen
   Theresa Elizabeth Jensen, formerly of McMinnville, died April 22, 2007, in Gladstone. She was 58.
   She was born Nov. 23, 1948, in McMinnville to Alfred and Helen (Fox) Jensen. She earned a degree in education from Southern Oregon University and worked as an elementary school teacher.
   She was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church and enjoyed traveling and needlework.
   Survivors include: mother Helen; brothers, Pete and Lou; sisters, Patty and Becky; and daughter Emily.
   A private burial service was held in Dundee Pioneer Cemetery.

April 25, 2007
Vivian C. Beck
   Vivian C. Beck of Newberg died April 18, 2007. She was 87.
She was born April 8, 1920, to Hal and Lottie (Ricky) Matherly in Barnes, Kan. She graduated from high school.
   She was a homemaker. She enjoyed birds, small animals, hugs and children.
   Survivors include: son Erik Beck of Newberg; sister Nancy Hawkins of Bend and three grandchildren.
   A private memorial service will be held April 28 at the Newberg Church of Christ. Disposition is by cremation.

April 21, 2007
Cheri K. Schmidt
   Cheri K. Schmidt of McMinnville died April 17, 2007, at Willamette Valley Medical Center. She was 52.
   She was born June 11, 1954, to Edward and Ruth Rose in Los Angeles. He moved to Oregon as a young girl. She graduated from McMinnville High School in 1972 and Chemeketa Community College in 1997 with a degree in social services. She worked as a case manager for Yamhill County Community Action Program (YCAP) for 14 years before becoming the food director at the Oregon Food Bank. A lengthy illness prompted her early retirement.
   She also volunteered with the Red Cross, St. Barnabas Soup Kitchen, Kiwanis and the Henderson House and other domestic violence shelters. She was active in HIV-AIDS awareness and support programs.
   Survivors include: husband Everett of McMinnville; daughters, Jennifer Troutman of McMinnville and Natasha Eggers of Dayton; parents Edward Rose of Kansas and Ruth Rose of Dayton; sisters, Ricketta Hackworth of King City and Christie Hodges of Dayton; four grandchildren; four stepchildren; 13 step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
   Visitation hours are from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday at the Macy and Son Funeral Chapel in McMinnville. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Macy and Son Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jim Peterson officiating.
   Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice in care of Macy and Son, 135 N. Evans St., McMinnville OR 97128.

Bobby J. Mays
   Bobby Joe Mays of Sequim, Wash., who has family in Newberg, died April 7, 2007. He was 52.
   He was born Jan 22, 1955, in Elkhart, Ind., to Kyle and Della (Sheppard) Mays. He worked as an auto mechanic.
   Survivors include: wife Elizabeth of Sequim, Wash.; brother Terry Mays of Maui, Hawaii; sister Sharron Courter of Maui; son James Thompson of Glendale, Ariz.; daughter Heather Kum of Newberg; nephew Corbin Mays of McMinnville and niece Marcy Courter of Newberg.
   A memorial service was held April 14 in Sequim, Wash.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the American Liver Foundation.

Emma B. McDonnell
   Emma Bessie “Em” McDonnell, formerly of Dundee, died April 17, 2007, in a Bend care home. She was 86.
   She was born Oct. 25, 1920, to Joseph and Rena (Ezetta) Ghilliassa in Portland. She graduated from Milwaukie High School. She worked as a waitress. She married Byron McDonnell on Jan. 9, 1942, in Vancouver, Wash. They lived in Portland before making their home in Dundee in 1970.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995 and moved to Bend in 2000 to live near her daughter.
   She enjoyed bowling, roller skating, CB radio and horseback riding.
   Survivors include: daughter Debra Jenness of Bend; sisters, Mary Roberts of Gresham and Edith McConnell of Portland; and one grandson.
   A funeral service was held April 20 in Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. Committal was at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Harvey I. Hanson
   Harvey Ingeman Hanson died April 14, 2007, in Newberg. He was 91.
   He was born July 13, 1915, in Westby, Wis., to John and Julia (Solle) Hanson. In 1926, he moved to Silverton, where he attended school. During World War II he worked at the U.S. Navy shipyards in Bremerton, Wash. He married Rosalie Frost. In the early 1950s he went to work for Tektronix of Beaverton, where he continued his career as a sheet metal worker until his retirement.
   He later separated from his first wife and married Thelma Stewart in 1972. She preceded him in death in 1983.
   On April 14, 1990, he married Zaida Bell. The couple made their home in Yamhill and enjoyed traveling the states, Canada and China. He enjoyed woodworking and other projects.
   Survivors include: wife Zaida of Yamhill; stepson Gordon Stewart of Silver Sulfur Springs, Mont.; sister Mabel Bartsoff of Novato, Calif.; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by brother Clarence and sister Inga Thompson.
   A memorial service was held April 19 in Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel.

Shirley H. Carter
   Shirley H. Carter of Newberg died April 15, 2007. She was 84.
She was born June 21, 1922, in Hillsboro to Owen and Mildred (Shirley) Helm. She attended Lincoln High School and George Fox University.
   In 1941, she married Alvin Carter in Portland. She was a homemaker and a member of Newberg Friends Church.
   Survivors include: sons, David of Springfield, Jim of Newberg and Roger, Robert and Tom of Portland; daughter Joyce Weeks of Newberg; brother Alan Helm of Vale; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by husband Alvin in July 2002.
Funeral services are pending.

Lorene B. Champagne
   Lorene Bertha Champagne of Newberg died April 13, 2007. She was 88.
   She was born Oct. 23, 1918, to Lloyd and Allie (Grammar) Welch in Haddam, Kan., where she attended school. In 1940, she married Peter Champagne and the couple settled in Newberg. She worked at Tektronix in Beaverton.
   She enjoyed fishing and crocheting.
   Survivors include: daughters, Clara Rhodes of Dayton and Pauline Tomasich of Missoula, Mont.; sisters Neva Sedlacek and Marcile Yastrop, both of Corvallis; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by son William in 1972; brothers, Robert, Doss, Lloyd and Floyd and by sister Florence Anderson.
   A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Valley View Memorial Park.

Mitchell D. Johnson
   Mitchell Dwayne Johnson of Newberg died April 7, 2007. He was 45.
   He was born Sept. 24, 1961, to Larry and Carolyn (Zard) Johnson in Newport. He attended North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo, Wash. He worked in the plastics manufacturing industry. He moved to Newberg 20 years ago.
   He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting.
   Survivors include: mother Carolyn; siblings Andy Prader and sister Chandra Paramo, both of Kingston, Wash.; uncle Jay Johnson of Newberg; grandmother Berniece Montplasir of Newberg.
   He was preceded in death by his father Larry Johnson.
   A private memorial service was held in Kingston, Wash.

Alice E. Rickert
   Alice “Ali” E. Rickert, formerly of Newberg, died April 7, 2007, in Fossil. She was 85.
   She was born July 10, 1921, to Harry and Ruth (Haven) Castle in Coos Bay. She moved to Newberg with her family as a child, attending Sherwood High School. In 1939, she married C.H. “Jack” Rickert. She was a full-time homemaker. She moved to Fossil in 1963.
   She enjoyed cooking for family and friends, writing poems and visits to the beach.
   Survivors include: sons, Chuck of Hermiston, Mike of Centralia, Wash., and David of Condon; daughters, Kay Wiser of Newberg, Sandra Rickert of Salem, Ruth Seitz of Beaverton, Marisa Jo Seely of Condon and Nina Seitz of Centralia, Wash.; 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
  She was preceded in death by husband Jack in 1982 and by daughters Cara Sims and Lynda Baranyai.
   A private memorial service was held in Centralia, Wash.

Florence M. Mills
   Florence Marie Mills of Newberg died April 7, 2007. She was 85.
   She was born April 4, 1922, to Nealon and Alma Dietz in Minot, N.D. She grew up in Woodburn, graduating from Woodburn High School in 1932. She resided in Portland and Woodburn before settling in Newberg. She married Howard Mills in 1948. She worked as manager of the Newberg Montgomery Ward Catalog store for 30 years, retiring in 1978.
   She enjoyed camping, fishing, crocheting, bowling and spending winters in Southern California with her husband.
   Survivors include: husband Howard of Newberg; son Brad of McMinnville; sister Margie Stalker of Newberg; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild numerous nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by daughter Claudette Anderson and by sister Marion McVey.
   No public memorial services are planned. Arrangements are in care of Alternative Burial and Cremation in Sherwood.

Naomi W. Nyman
   Naomi Waneta Nyman died April 7, 2007, at Providence Newberg Medical Center. She was 89.
   She was born Nov. 21, 1917, to Melvin and Bessie (Hutchens) Huffman in Newberg. She attended the Girls Polytechnic School in Portland before returning home to care for her ill mother. On June 16, 1936, she married Carl Nyman at Newberg Church of the Nazarene. The couple made their home in Newberg, where she worked at Newberg Care Home, Chehalem Convalescent Center and Friendsview Manor (now Friendsview Retirement Community).
   She attended Newberg Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed drawing, painting and playing the piano, organ and trumpet.
   Survivors include: sons, Ron of Newberg and Del of Bend; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990 and by a brother and a sister.
   Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Newberg Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Don Fivecoat officiating. Committal follows at Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Heidi M. Boenisch
   Heidi Marie Boenisch died April 3, 2007. She was 42.
   She was born April 3, 1965, to Dietmar and Anne Boenisch in Inglewood, Calif. She moved to Newberg in 1974. She graduated from Newberg High School in 1983.
   She attended the University of Washington, graduating in 1987. She traveled extensively in Europe, Asia and South America, spending a year as an undergraduate student in Vienna and a year as a Rotary International Foundation Graduate Scholar in Madurai, India.
   She worked from 1991 to 2002 in public relations and held the position of vice-president for KVO Public Relations.
   In 1991, she married David Plotkin at St. Michael the Arc Angel Church in Portland. She worked from home, volunteered in her childrens’ schools and with Children First For Oregon.
   Survivors include: husband David of Newberg; son Simon Plotkin of Portland; daughters, Sophia and Helen Plotkin of Portland; mother Anne Boenisch of Newberg and brother Christian Boenisch of Ashland.
   She was preceded in death by her father Dietmar Boenisch and sister Sigrid Boenisch.
   A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Clare Catholic Church in Portland.

Margaret J. Thompson
   Margaret Julia Thompson died April 6, 2007, at a Salem hospital. She was 88.
   She was born Jan. 24, 1919, in Bend to Joseph and Leona (Brown) Johnson. After graduating from high school, she married Harold Baurer in 1939 and worked as a nurse’s aide in Friendsview Retirement Center in Newberg. Her husband preceded her in death in 1973. She married George Thompson on March 6, 1975. He preceded her in death in 1980.
   She was a member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, making latch-hook rugs, gardening and gambling.
   Survivors include: son Harold Baurer of Eugene; daughter Marlene Cardwell of Salem;d 10 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by son James Baurer; by brothers Ray, Orville, Homer, Roy and John Johnson; and sister Mary Johnson.
   A graveside service was held April 9 at Crescent View Cemetery in Tigard. Arrangements are in care of Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel.

Arthur E. Norberg
   Arthur Erick Norberg died April 1, 2007, at his Newberg home. He was 61.
   He was born Nov. 20, 1945, to Kenneth and Melva (Rosler) Norberg in Bremerton, Wash. He moved with his family to Portland as an infant.
   He graduated from Benson High School in 1963 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving until 1967. He worked at several jobs before becoming a respiratory therapist at St. Vincent’s Hospital in the 1970s. In 1988, he moved to Newberg, where he worked at Newberg Community Hospital (now Providence Newberg Medical Center). He married Kathleen Cunningham on July 7, 1990.
   He retired from the hospital in 1999 and began a career as an insurance agent, which he continued up to the time of his death.
He was a Little League coach in Newberg. He enjoyed baseball, camping and auto racing. He was also an AA supporter and sponsor to several AA participants.
   Survivors include: wife Kathleen of Newberg: son Steven of Newberg; stepson David Ball of Salem; stepdaughter Katrina Ball of Dundee: sisters, Louise Gatlin, Judy Bain and Susan Norberg, all of Portland; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy.
   A memorial service was held April 6 in Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Gregg Selander officiating. Committal is slated for 10 a.m. April 13 in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Lydia M. Myers
   Lydia M. Myers died March 27, 2007, at her Newberg home. She was 92.
   She was born Dec. 16, 1914, in Cornelius. She lived the majority of her life in Newberg. She married Lloyd Myers in 1950; he preceded her in death in 1967.
   Survivors include: son Gary Myers; daughter Sylvia Ross; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   A private memorial service will be held. Arrangements are in care of Neptune Cremation.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Newberg American Legion Auxiliary.

Noel E. Ware
   Noel Emerson Ware died March 29, 2007, at his Newberg home. He was 88.
   He was born Jan. 4, 1919, to Homer and Hazel (Simms) Ware in Oklahoma City, Okla. He married Frances “Jean” DeVore on Jan. 4, 1939, in Yuma, Ariz. The couple made their home in San Diego and Long Beach, Calif., while he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korea. He retired from the military after 21 years in service.
   In 1960, the couple moved to his wife’s hometown of Newberg, where he attended George Fox University and Western University, earning a master’s degree in education. For the next 40 years, he taught in the Newberg School District.
   Survivors include: sons, Steven of Newberg and Michael of Kihei, Hawaii; daughter Carol Barca of Lahaina, Hawaii; brothers Don and Gene of Tulsa, Okla.; grandsons Jason Todd and Anthony Noel; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by a daughter, Grace Michele, in 1945; wife Jean in 2006; brother Ron and sister Gwen Ove.
   No funeral service is planned. A private committal will be held at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Adelyn J. Bartolotti
   Adelyn Jo Bartolotti was stillborn March 28, 2007 at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Prineville. She weighed 5 lb. 8 oz and measured 20 inches.
   Survivors include: parents Matt and Kim of Prineville; grandparents, Jeff and Margie Hunter of Prineville and Tony and Linda Bartolotti of Dundee; great-grandparents, Russ and Clara Hunter of Lyle, Wash., and Hal and Dottie Medici of Newberg; great-grandmother Edith Bartolotti of Newberg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   No public services will be held. Arrangements are in care of the Prineville Funeral Home.

Jordan I. Nelson
   Jordan Isaac Nelson died March 29, 2007, at his Beaverton home. He was 7.
   He was born May 3, 1999, in Newberg to Sarah Nelson. He attended Mabel Rush Elementary School.
   He enjoyed music, dancing, video games, bicycling and animals.
   Survivors include: mother Sarah of Beaverton; stepfather Randy Chapman of Beaverton; sisters, Kaitlynn Nelson and Abby Chapman of Beaverton; grandparents Greg and Sandy Nelson of Lafayette; great-grandmothers, Nita Smith of McMinnville and Marion Smith of Montana; uncle Eric Nelson of Maryland; and great-grandparents Ted and Marylou Nelson.
   A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. today (Wednesday) in Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. Viewing and visitation is 8:30 a.m. today until service time.

Wilber R. DeHart
   Wilber Roger DeHart died March 28, 2007. He was 63.
   He was born July 9, 1943, in Adell, Iowa. to Wilber and Marjorie DeHart. He moved with his family to Newberg in 1948. Graduating from Newberg High School in 1961, he worked for local farmers, the Newberg Dairy Queen and Butler Chevrolet, before becoming a meat cutter for Nap’s and Safeway Food and Drug. He later opened DeHart’s Pressure Washing, running the business until his retirement in 1999.
   He was a member of the Sherwood Elks Lodge and Newberg Active 20/30 Club. He was a volunteer firefighter and enjoyed camping and fishing.
   Survivors include: mother Marjorie of Dundee; sons, Trevor of Dundee and Troy of Newberg; six grandchildren and six nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father Wilber, and brother Bill.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg with Pastor Steve Estrem officiating.

March 28, 2007
Constance M. Hlavaty
   Constance Margaret Hlavaty died March 25, 2007, at a local hospital. She was 59.
   She was born July 6, 1947, in Neptune, N.J., to Theodore and Rosalind (Waldorf) Hlavaty. She was raised on the East Coast. She married George Hlavaty and they lived in the San Francisco Bay area and Sacramento, Calif. In 2005, she settled in Newberg to be with her family. She was a homemaker and enjoyed window shopping and garage sales.
   Survivors include: daughters, Katrina of Maryland, Aura of Sherwood and Angelina of California; brothers, Timothy Hlavaty of Los Angeles and Ronald Hlavaty of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
   Funeral arrangements are pending and are in care of Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel.

Karen C. McFall
   Karen Clara McFall of Sherwood died March 26, 2007. She was 60.
   She was born May 31, 1946, to George and Erma (Baker) Kirkpatrick in Hillsboro. She grew up on a farm in the Scholls-Hillsboro area and graduated from Sherwood High School in 1964.
   She attended Western Business School in Portland and went to work for American Steel. In 1967, she married Dennis McFall and they settled in Eugene. They returned to Sherwood in 1972 and later divorced.
   She continued her career as an administrative assistant for US Bank in Sherwood, Tigard, Beaverton and Portland, and Allstate Insurance in Tigard, retiring in 2006.
   She attended Mt. Home United Methodist Church and Countryside Methodist Church in Sherwood. She enjoyed cross-stitching, mystery novels, trips to the beach and sports.
   Survivors include: son Clint of McMinnville; daughters, Connie Kimber of Aloha and Clarrisa Aoyama of Tualatin; brother Rodney Kirkpatrick of Gresham; sister Joan Kirkpatrick of Sherwood; and four grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her brother, David Kirkpatrick.
   A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at Mt. Home United Methodist Church in Sherwood with Pastor Anne Weld-Martin officiating. Committal will follow at Gibbs Cemetery in Sherwood.

John C. Sundberg
   John Carl Sundberg, who has family in Sherwood, died March 25, 2007, at his Portland home. He was 90.
   He was born Dec. 9, 1916, to Charles and Edna (Johnson) Sundberg in Crosby-Ironton, Minn. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps and served in the U.S. Army, receiving his discharge in 1946. He attended St. Cloud University and the University of Minnesota, earning a master’s degree in business. He also took classes toward a doctorate at the universities of Colorado and Southern California.
   Her married Mary Schmitz on June 17, 1948. The couple settled in Fairmont, Minn., where he taught at Fairmont High School. In 1965, they settled in Portland, where he continued to teach at Portland Community College, retiring in 1981.
   He was a member of the American Legion and the National Education Association. He enjoyed reading, dogs and vacationing in Florida.
   Survivors include: wife Mary of Portland; son Robert of Sherwood; and three grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by son John, brother George and sister Dorothy Iudehar.
   A funeral service was held March 29 in Attrell’s Sherwood Funeral Chapel,with Father William Wickham officiating. Committal was at Pleasant View Cemetery in Sherwood.

Harold O. Weesner
   Harold Oliver Weesner died Feb. 8, 2007, at Friendsview Manor. He was 76.
   He was born March 18, 1930, to Oliver and Pearl (Bundy) Weesner in Newberg. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1949 and received a bachelor’s degree from George Fox University in 1953. He married Marjorie Larrance in Greenleaf, Idaho, on June 18, 1956.
   While an engineering student at Oregon State University, Weesner was drafted for military service. A conscientious objector, he was instead assigned to work as an accountant in the Alexian Brothers Hospital in Chicago.
   Completing his national service, he was recruited to work in the bridge engineering department of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. The couple settled in the Chicago suburbs.
   In 1963, he completed his master’s degree in engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The couple returned to Newberg that year after his wife Marjorie was offered a teaching position at George Fox College (now George Fox University).
   He worked for 30 years as a structural design engineer with the Oregon Department of Transportation, where he helped design the Progress Overpass on Highway 217 and the Fremont Bridge in Portland.
   He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Newberg Friends Church. The couple sat on the GFU President’s Council and endowed two scholarships in engineering and physical education. He also tutored math students at GFU and lent his engineering expertise to the Wheeler footbridge and numerous retaining walls around the campus.
   Survivors include: daughter Cathy King of Battle Ground, Wash.; sister Esther Thomas of Quincy, Wash.; and two grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie in 2002 and by a sister, Margaret Weesner, in 1981.
   A memorial service was held Feb. 22 in Newberg Friends Church. Disposition was in Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Thomas R. Roth Sr.
   Thomas Roger Roth Sr. of Dayton died March 23, 2007. He was 71.
   He was born July 25, 1935, to Casper and Marie (Balmer) Roth in Portland. He was raised in Dayton and graduated from Dayton High School in 1954. After graduation he worked for Alpenrose Dairy of Portland and settled in Dundee.
   On March 17, 1956, he married Patsy Gladden. They operated the Roth Dairy Farm in Dayton, where they settled in 1966. He retired from Alpenrose in 1996, but continued to work on properties he owned and assisted his uncle in construction.
   He enjoyed trains, cars, gun and coin collecting, traveling and wagering on the Portland Trail Blazers.
   Survivors include: wife Patsy of Dayton; son Tom Jr. of Prineville; daughters, Geraldene Pierce and Susan Moe of Dayton and Rhonda Roth of Issaquah, Wash.; brother Paul Roth of Newberg; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by sister Rose Hershifeldt.
   A funeral service was held March 29 at the chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors in McMinnville with Pastor Jim Peterson officiating. Committal was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Eve R. Watt
   Eve Rachel Watt of Newberg died March 24, 2007, of complications from cancer. She was 49.
   She was born Sept. 24, 1957, to Lester and Eleanor (Saatio) Watt in Torrance, Calif. She spent her childhood in McMinnville and Sherwood.
   In 1988, she settled in Newberg with her children. She worked in the electronics industry and was employed at Vanguard EMS.
She lived briefly in Aloha before returning to Newberg to live with her sisters.
  She enjoyed crafts and raising birds.
   Survivors include: sisters, Becki Watt and Martha Knapp of Newberg; son Kyle James of Portland; daughter Daris James of Aloha; brothers, Roger Watt of Washington and Gerald Watt of California; and three grandchildren.
   A memorial gathering will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Watt home, 15250 NE Kincaid Road, Newberg.

William R. Boyd Sr.
   William Renton Boyd Sr., died March 18, 2007, at a local hospital. He was 75.
   He was born April 3, 1931, to Edgar and Annie (Renton) Boyd in Yale, Okla. He was a member of the Seminole Indian tribe and moved to Oregon as a youth.
    He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1949 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 to 1953. Returning to Lebanon, he began a career as a police officer, later working in Salem and Idaho.
   In 1951, he married Ellen Jones in Lebanon. He became an insurance adjuster in 1964, retiring in 1980. In 1968, he settled in Newberg, where he remained until moving to Dallas in 2006.
   He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1982. He married Sharon Ackerman in November 1986.
   He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dallas and volunteered in the Newberg High School wood shop, where he was an assistant shop teacher for 10 years. He also enjoyed fishing, boating and camping.
   Survivors include: wife Sharon of Dallas; sons, William Jr. of Gresham, Paul of Cornelius and Bruce of Newberg; daughters, Shahana Johnson of Newberg, Taslima Stoddard of Dillon, Mont. and Sofia Parra of Salem; brothers, Robert of White Swan, Wash. and Richard of Ukiah, Calif.; sisters, Joann Rasor of Corvallis and Imogene Wells of Salem; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by daughter Janice Gomez.
   A funeral service was held March 22 in Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jeremy Hajdu-Paulen officiating. Committal was in Willamette Valley National Cemetery in Portland.

Billy R. Bailey
   Billy Raymond Bailey, formerly of Newberg, died March 2, 2007, at the Mennonite Home in Albany. He was 77.
   He was born Dec. 13, 1929, in Nixon, Texas, to Vol and Gertrude (Squire) Bailey. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1966 after 20 years of service, and moved to Newberg. In 1974, he moved to Albany. In 1950, he married June Dugger. They were divorced in 1974. He married Dorothy Hassenger in 1976.
   He worked as a trucker, and later delivered recreational vehicles to dealers. He enjoyed horses and rode in Veteran’s Day parades. He was a member of the American Legion post in Albany.
   Survivors include: wife Dorothy of Albany; sons, Ron Sult of Newberg, Steve Sult of Redmond, Dusty Bailey of Portland, Mike Bailey of Beaverton and Patrick Bailey of Seattle; daughter Malinda Bailey of McMinnville; stepson David Hassenger of Bellingham, Wash.; stepdaughter Sue Williams of Eugene; brother Lester of Dallas, Texas; sister Ann Mayfield of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by stepdaughter Julie Hassenger.
   A memorial service was held March 17 at Tangent Community Church. Arrangements are in care of Aasum-Dufour Funeral Home.

Rev. William B. Murdock
   The Rev. William Barton “Bart” Murdock died March 17, 2007. He was 91.
   He was born Feb. 24, 1916, in New York. He attended Hobart College before enlisting in 1940 in the Marine Corps. He served in the South Pacific and earned the rank of major. He was ordained in 1948, after attending Virginia Seminary.
   In 1949, he married Thae Reitzel in San Mateo, Calif. He worked as the rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in San Jose, Calif., retiring and moving to Newberg in 1979.
   He was a member of the Yamhill County Park and Recreation Board for 12 years, and had a library named after him in the Chehalem Adult Enrichment Center in Newberg.
   He and his wife moved four years ago to a retirement community in Lake Oswego.
   Survivors include: wife Thae of Lake Oswego; daughters, Len Wofford and Kate Jakola; and three grandsons.
   He was preceded in death by his son Gordon.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. March 30 in Christ Episcopal Church in Lake Oswego.

Howard R. Dysinger
   Howard Roy Dysinger died March 20, 2007, at a Woodburn nursing home. He was 49.
   He was born July 13, 1957, to Arthur and Ada (Welsh) Dysinger in Gramby, Mo. He lived there until age 3. In 1961, he moved with his family to Rainer and then to Canby before settling in Hubbard, where he lived the past three decades. He worked as a machine operator in a paper mill. He enjoyed restoring old cars.
   Survivors include: brothers, Arthur of Portland, James of Aurora, Paul of Donald; and sister Sue Mullen of St. Paul.
   He was preceded in death by his parents: Arthur in 1999 and Ada in 2006.

Gilbert E. Fitzgerald
   Gilbert Earl Fitzgerald died March 18, 2007, at a Newberg care home. He was 92.
   He was born April 14, 1914, to James and Ada (Bussard) Fitzgerald in Aberdeen, Wash. He attended school in Oakville, Wash. Earl, as friends and family called him, followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a logger. In 1944, he joined the U.S. Army, serving in France and Germany during World War II.
   He was honorably discharged in April 1946 and married Ethel Sharrow in Walla Walla, Wash., that year. The couple lived briefly in California before settling in Onalaska, Wash., in 1950.
   He owned a farm and operated a sawmill in Onalaska, teaching the business to his five sons. In 1994, the couple moved to Northport, Wash., to be closer to family. They settled in Newberg in 2005.
   Survivors include: wife Ethel of Newberg; sons, Lee of Woodland, Wash., Jim of Tacoma, Ray of Northport, Wash., Tom of Onalaska and Dennis of Newberg; 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
   A funeral was held Wednesday in Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tom Valencia officiating. A private committal service was held at the city of Oakville cemetery.

Patricia M. Warner
   Patricia May Warner died March 7, 2007, of cancer in a local hospital. She was 73.
   She was born April 3, 1933, to Clem and Elsie Shaw in Oregon. She worked as a certified nurse’s assistant at several nursing homes in Gresham and Newberg. She married Robert Warner on Dec. 25, 1989. She enjoyed embroidery and movies.
   Survivors include: husband Robert of Newberg; sons, Ken Brooks of Portland, Terry Brooks of Gresham, Gary Brooks of Peoria, Ill. and Mark Brooks of Tigard; stepsons, Ron Warner of Milwaukie, Robert Warner and Terry Warner of Portland; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Don Shaw.
   A graveside funeral service was held March 23 in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Emma Wilder
   Emma Wilder died March 14, 2007, at a Wilsonville assisted living facility. She was 81.
   She was born April 19, 1925, to Charles and Pauline Clark in Tigard. She grew up in the Beef Bend area of Bull Mountain and graduated from Tigard High School in 1943.
   In 1945, she married Ely “Doc” Wilder in McMinnville. They lived in Tigard, Tualatin, Sherwood and Lafayette, all locations where she worked as a cook.
   She was a member of the Metzger United Methodist Church and enjoyed crocheting, embroidery and cooking.
   Survivors include: son Ken of Fresno; daughters, Kathy Steyart of Covington, Wash., and Mercedes Sweeney of Seaside; foster son Doss Walker of Newberg; brother Ed Clark of Salem; sister Ethel Ferris of Newberg; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in 2006 and by her brother George Clark.
   A memorial service was held Saturday in Metzger United Methodist Church of Tigard with Pastor Robin Yim officiating. Private committal followed at Gibbs Cemetery in Sherwood.

Dorothy Howard
   Dorothy Howard died March 13, 2007, of kidney failure at her Tualatin home. She was 84.
   She was born March 12, 1923, to George and Cyrille (Ireton) Dewey in East Helena, Mont. She attended College of the Pacific and the University of Michigan, where she earned a degree in library science. She worked as a librarian and bookmobile operator for the Multnomah County Library District.
   She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Tigard, and volunteered with the Washington County Elections Board, the U.S. Census Bureau and the Red Cross.
    Survivors include: sons, George of Newberg and John of Woodenville, Wash.; daughters, Margaret Singleton of Knoxville, Tenn., Charlotte Howard of Walnut Creek, Calif., Patricia Vicknair of Conyers, Ga., Beth Howard-Pitney of Cupertino, Calif., and Jane Harrell of Santa Cruz, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in 2004.
   A private committal service will be held in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

John R. Stands
   John Russel Stands of Newberg died March 6, 2007. He was 93.
   He was born March 24, 1913, to Irvin and Hattie (Perrin) Stands in Seiling, Okla. He attended Friends Bible School (now Barclay College) in Haviland, Kan., where he earned a degree in Bible ministry.
   He married Frances Martin in Weatherford, Okla., on Aug. 28, 1935. He served as a pastor at Friends churches in Colorado, Idaho and Oregon for 45 years. He spent two years in Alaska with a juvenile ministry before settling in the Portland area. He served as assistant pastor at the Newberg Friends Church for six years. He and his wife moved to Friendsview Retirement Community in 1982.
   He enjoyed gardening and playing croquet.
   Survivors include: wife Frances of Newberg; son Dean of Cherokee, Okla.; daughters, Helen Binford of Wichita, Kan., Darleen Church of Anchorage, Wanda Dailey of Bend and Peggy Fowler of Tigard; brother Jacob Stands of Norman, Okla.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.
   A memorial service was held March 12 at Newberg Friends Church. A private graveside service was held at Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Henry M. Granado
   Henry M. Granado of Dundee died March 12, 2007, at a local care center. He was 70.
   He was born April 13, 1936, to Jose and Juana (Soria) Granado in Los Angeles. He grew up in Los Angeles, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1954. He worked for the U.S. Post Office and as a painter.
   He married Maria Ubrina on June 21, 1956. The couple moved to Newberg in 1965 and to Dundee in 1969. He worked for the city of Portland road department for more than 20 years, retiring in 1986.
   He attended St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Newberg and coached Little League baseball. He enjoyed traveling, reading the newspaper and spending time with family.
   Survivors include: wife Maria of Dundee; sons, Henry of Dundee and Anthony of Portland; daughters, Catherine Granado of Rockford, Wash., and Gloria Mills of San Diego, Calif.; brother Bernardo of Dundee; sister Martha Lopez of Newberg; five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph, and sister Rose Patterson.
   A Rosary was held March 14 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A Funeral Mass was held March 15 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Committal was at Valley View Memorial Park.

Vivian Livengood
   Vivian Livengood died March 6, 2007, at a McMinnville care home. She was 97.
   She was born Aug. 13, 1909, to Erik and Minnie (Peterson) Oberg in Moscow, Idaho. She attended high school in Newberg. On July 9, 1929, she married Lorrie Plews. They lived in Idaho for two years before returning to Newberg, where they started a firewood and fuel oil business. He preceded her in death in 1969.
   She worked as a caregiver in local nursing homes. In 1984, she married Bernard Livengood. He preceded her in death in 1992. She moved to McMinnville in 1998.
   She enjoyed gardening and writing letters to friends.
   Survivors include: sons, Joe Plews of Neskowin and Fred Plews of McMinnville; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by daughter Ruth Plews in 1964.
   A funeral service was held March 10 in the Newberg High School auditorium with Stanley Sullivan officiating. A private committal followed at Valley View Memorial Park.

Roy G. Finegan
   Roy Glen “Bud” Finegan of Dayton died March 9, 2007, at a Salem hospital. He was 72.
   He was born Jan. 23, 1935, to James and Mabel (Davidson) Finegan in Oxnard, Calif. He graduated from Sonora High School in Sonora, Calif. He married Janice Skaggs on Sept. 15, 1956, in Stevenson, Wash. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in Korea, and retired in 1970. He returned to Oxnard, where he took over his parents’ real estate business. In 1976, he moved to Dayton and worked for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission from 1977 to 1997.
   He was a member of the Newberg Church of Christ. He enjoyed camping, fishing and woodworking.
   Survivors include: wife Janice of Dayton; son Roy II of Tacoma; daughters, Kellene Payne of Carlton, Debbie Watson of Calabasas, Calif., and Laura Taylor of McMinnville; sister Kathleen Burris of Oxnard; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Donna J. Boyd
   Donna Jean Boyd died March 2, 2007, at her Sherwood home. She was 69.
   She was born April 25, 1937, to Ted and Virginia (Plumb) Hall in Wicoma. She attended school in Newberg. On Sept. 28, 1957, she married E. William Boyd in Newberg.
She enjoyed reading and spending time with friends and family.
   Survivors include: son Greg of Wilsonville; daughters, Diane Boyd of Maui, Hawaii, Cindy Van Wormer of Newberg and Marcia Holdahl of Tualatin; stepsons George of Sherwood, Ron of Newberg and Tom of St. Paul; stepdaughter Jeanne Nollette of Port Townsend, Wash.; brother Jim Hall of Eugene; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983; and by granddaughter Brandy Van Wormer and stepson Jim Boyd.

Louise E. Vachter
   Louise Elizabeth Vachter died March 4, 2007, at her Newberg home. She was 94.
   She was born Dec. 14, 1912, to Stephen and Walburga (Schuh) Sprauer in Mt. Angel. She graduated from Mt. Angel Academy at the Benedictine Sisters Convent. On Feb. 12, 1936, she married Matthew J. Vachter in Mt. Angel.
   She was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church and the church’s altar society, and was also a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters. She enjoyed crocheting.
   Survivors include: sons, Kenneth of Scio and Steven of St. Paul; daughters, Sharon Eklund of Newberg, Barbara Olson of Salem and Marianne Chambers of Gervais; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in March 2006.
   A funeral mass was held March 8 at the St. Paul Catholic Church. Interment was in the St. Paul Catholic Cemetery.

Grace M. Peters
   Grace May Peters died March 1, 2007, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 90.
   She was born Feb. 6, 1917, to Edward and Anna Belle (Evans) Flannigan in Washington, Kan., where she attended school. On Sept. 8, 1935, she married John Peters. The couple moved to Oregon, where she worked as a retail clerk for W.R. Hicks Co. in Gresham.
   She was a member of the Newberg Christian Church, where she sang in the choir and assisted with the annual Christmas program. She also sang in the Baptist Church Choir in Gresham.
   She enjoyed cooking, quilting and sewing, making several wedding gowns over the years. She was also a fan of the Portland Trail Blazers and Dallas Cowboys.
   Survivors include: son John of Salem; daughters, Marcia Wilcox of   Newberg and Jacquelynn Hand of Pocatello, Idaho; 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her husband John in August 1992 and by a sister and brother.
   A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Newberg Christian Church. Committal will follow at Valley View Memorial Park.

J.D. Pierce
   J.D. Pierce of Newberg died March 3, 2007, at a Portland hospital. He was 83.
   He was born Feb. 28, 1924, to Elvin and Elizabeth (Anderson) Pierce in Salina, Okla. He attended school there and in Chino, Calif. In 1944, he joined the U.S. Army, where he earned the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star, among other awards.
   After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Chino, where he married Edith Chalupnik in February 1948. He worked in a nursery growing roses, and in 1956 the family moved to Oregon, where they purchased a farm and filbert nursery in Newberg.
He attended Beaverton Foursquare Church and enjoyed spending time with friends and family.
   Survivors include: wife Edith of Newberg; sons, Dennis and Brian of Newberg, Ricky of Meridian, Idaho, and Gary of Hubbard; daughter Lynette Short of Newberg; sisters, Willie Willyard of Pryor, Okla., and Ruth Shaw of Cedar City, Utah; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
   A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor John Taft officiating. Committal will take place at 10 a.m. Monday at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Leona M. Andrieu
   Leona Marie Andrieu of Newberg died Feb. 26, 2007, of complications from a stroke. She was 86.
   She was born Feb. 16, 1921, in Duluth, Minn., to Leo and Sophie (St. Onge) Garske. On Feb. 28, 1942, she married George Andrieu. Following her husband’s service in World War II, they settled in Klamath County. The couple retired to Brookings in 1973. Her husband preceded her in death in October 1995 and she moved to Newberg, moving to Chehalem Care Center in 2000.
   She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg. She enjoyed bowling, gardening, bingo, lace-making and playing the organ.
   Survivors include: daughters, Mary Ryan-Hotchkiss of Portland, Paula Schaffner of Arroyo Grande, Calif. and Ellen Bailey of Newberg; siblings, James of Hollister, Calif., Rose Barker of Soquel, Calif., Thomas of Soquel, John of Pleasanton Calif., Peter of Union, Wash., Ann Majsak of Watsonville, Calif., Virginia Miller of San Jose, Calif. and Ruth Silveira of Penticton, B.C., Canada; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by brothers Lawrence, Ben and Joseph.
   A Rosary will be held at 10:30 a.m. April 21 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Merrill, followed by Mass at 11 a.m. Interment is at at Mt. Cavalry Cemetery in Klamath Falls.

Shirley M. Green
   Shirley Mae Green of Newberg died March 2, 2007, of lung disease. She was 61.
   She was born May 26, 1945, in Biddeford, Maine, to William and Eunice (Brooks) Fickett. She married Ed Green in 1995 and moved to Newberg in 1996. He preceded her in death in 2004.
   She enjoyed bird watching, gardening, word puzzles and cats.
Survivors include: sister Laura Strout of Maine; and several nieces and nephews.
   A private memorial service will be held at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg. Inurnment is at Valley View.

Jess D. Richter
   Jess David Richter of St. Paul died Feb. 28, 2007, of pancreatic cancer. He was 65.
   He was born Sept. 4, 1941, in Tacoma to Ernest and Lelia Richter. He grew up on the family farm in Federal Way, Wash. He attended Federal Way High School, Bellevue Community College and culinary school. In 1981, he married Jeannette Klontz and had two children before she preceded him in death due to breast cancer.
   In 1990, he and his children moved to St. Paul, where he married Caroline Coleman in October 1991. He worked as a chicken farmer. He supported youth sports, volunteering as a softball and baseball coach.
   Survivors include: wife Caroline of St. Paul; sons, Jesse and William; daughter Sara Richter; nine brothers and sisters.
   A funeral mass was held March 6 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg, followed by a reception at St. Paul City Hall.

Esther H. Evans
   Esther Hinz Evans died Feb. 26, 2007 at her Newberg home. She was 91.
   She was born Aug. 17, 1915, in Thompson, N.D., to William and Emilia (Wagner) Hinz. The family moved to Naches, Wash., in 1919, where she graduated from Cowiche High School.
   In 1941, she was a resident of Hickam Air Base in Hawaii and witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor. She later settled in Southern California and married John Charles Evans in Nevada in 1981. The couple moved to Newberg in 1997.
   She enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with family.
Survivors include: son Robert of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; daughters, Carlene Brown of Anchorage and Rexine MacFarlane of Dundee; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in 2002; her parents; brothers Walter and Earl; sisters Ruth and Alice; and son-in-law James MacFarlane.
   Chapel viewing and visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg with Chaplain Gregg Selander officiating.

   Zane Grey Wood died Feb. 26, 2007, at his Yamhill home. He was 84.
   He was born April 3, 1922, on Chehalem Mountain to William and Zena Wood. He attended Newberg High School, where he was a member of the wrestling team.
   He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1946, returning to the Newberg area where he worked as a logger and as a timber faller for the Detroit Dam project in 1951.
   In 1952, he married Georgia Swisher. The couple moved to Northern California in 1958, settling in Hydesville. He continued to work as a logger and in 1960 started a business cutting logs that were too large for area sawmills.
   In 2002, he retired as a logger and sawyer, returning to live near Yamhill.
   Survivors include: wife Georgia of Yamhill; sons, Mike and Larry Wood; daughters, Denise, Barbie and Janice Thompson; brother Dale; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his brother Bill and sisters Thora and Claudia.
   His memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. March 10 at the Chehalem Armory Center in Newberg.

Ronald Singleton
   Ronald Singleton died Feb. 21, 2007, at his Dayton home. He was 59.
   He was born March 15, 1947, in Hillsboro to John and Olgie (Hughes) Singleton. He grew up and attended school in Newberg and worked as a meat cutter, holding jobs in most of the 50 states.
   He enjoyed spending time with his family and pets.
   Survivors include: his companion Michele Richardson of Dayton; daughters, Sally Wright and Suzie Oulman; sisters, Betty Maxwell, Norma McCutchan, Marie Smith, Doyalene Henley and Dorothy Eggers.
   He was preceded in death by his parents and by brothers Clive and Cleve.
   A private service will be held at Newberg Friends Cemetery. Arrangements are in care of Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel.

Russell J. White
   Russell J. White of Newberg died Feb. 24, 2007, due to complications arising from pneumonia and lymphoma. He was 70.
   He was born Aug. 2, 1936, in Lawrence, Mass. He attended school through the eighth-grade. He worked as a handyman, groundskeeper and maintenance worker.
   He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Monday Hikers Group at the Chehalem Senior Center. He enjoyed building models and furniture, and fixing cars.
   He was preceded in death in 1956 by his wife and child in a drunk driving accident, as well as parents and some foster brothers. He has no survivors.
   A Recital of the Rosary will be held at 1:45 p.m followed by a funeral mass at 2 p.m. Sunday at Our Lady of Peace Retreat Center in Beaverton.

Darlene L. Eve
   Darlene Lilly (Johnston) Eve, formerly of Newberg, died Feb. 21, 2007, in Portland. She was 79.
   She was born Sept. 2, 1928, in Tillamook to David and Edith Lilly. She attended Newberg High School, graduating in 1945, and studied nursing for a year at George Fox University.
On June 15, 1947, she married Harold Johnston in Newberg.
   She was a member of the Piedmont Friends Church in Portland, where she taught Sunday school classes for more than a decade.
   She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1955 and was a resident at the Bishop Morris Care Center and the Fairlawn Healthcare Center from 1980 until her death.
   She remarried Charles Eve in 1968. He preceded her in death in 1980.
   Survivors include: sons, Richard and Howard of Portland; daughters, Laneta Meeker of Temecula, Calif., Celesta Rea of Hong Kong; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held Feb. 25 at the Newberg Friends Church. Disposition was by cremation.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, in care of the Ross Hollywood Chapel in Portland.

Kathryn A. Stewart
   Kathryn Ann Stewart died Feb. 24, 2007, in Newberg. She was 60.
She was born Aug. 24, 1946, in Scottsbluff, Neb., to Floyd and Bernice (Carter) Porter. She grew up in Grandview, Wash. She moved to Portland and married Robert Stewart on May 16, 1975. After their marriage, they lived in several towns in Yamhill County, settling in Yamhill in 1987.
   She worked at Intel in Beaverton for 11 years and at the Newberg Fred Meyer store for 10 years. In 2003, she moved to Newberg.
   Survivors include: husband Robert of Newberg; sons, Robert Porter of Atwater, Calif., and James, Timothy and Robert Jr. of Newberg; stepsons, Timothy Blaine of McMinnville and Ted Wade of Yamhill; stepdaughter Brenda Montgomery of Colorado; brother Louis Porter of Oregon City; and four grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Duncan.
   A graveside service was held Feb. 27 in the Friends Cemetery with the Rev. James Stark officiating.

Cecil W. Johnson
   Cecil W. “John” Johnson, who has relatives in Newberg, died Feb. 12, 2007, at his home in Milwaukie. He was 78.
   He was born June 10, 1928, in Portland to Elvin and Lydia Johnson. He attended Franklin and Benson high schools. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps under Gen. MacArthur.
   After his discharge, he went into business designing, manufacturing and selling modular homes, motor homes and trailers under the name C.W. Johnson Enterprises Inc. He later went into land development and construction in Washington County.
   He married Carol May Larson in December 1982, and they lived briefly in Newberg. He had three adopted children and one daughter from a previous marriage.
   He was a private pilot and president of the Beaverton chapter of the Oregon Pilots Association. He also enjoyed nature, boating and golfing.
   Survivors include: wife Carol of Milwaukie; daughter Kay Ann Swickard of Kent, Wash.; stepsons, Kenneth of Newberg and Kerry of Beaverton; stepdaughters, Karen of El Cahon, Calif. and Tracy Mooney of Hillsboro; brothers, Elvin of Portland and Charles of Redmond; sisters, Sybil Walsh of Portland and Florence Reed of Oregon City; and two grandchildren.
   At the request of the family there will be no memorial service. Arrangements are in care of Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel.

Harold Hinckley
   Harold “Hal” Hinckley of Dundee died Feb. 20, 2007. He was 90.
   He was born Nov. 30, 1916, in Lawrence, Mass., and grew up on the East Coast, where he attended the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics.
   He worked as an aircraft mechanic at LaGuardia Airfield in New York. Following his service in World War II, he worked for Roscoe Turner, an award-winning race pilot turned airline owner, in Indianapolis.
   He married Betty Bush in 1942. The couple returned to New York in 1952, where Hinckley began a career in avionics part sales.
   In 1982, he retired after traveling to Europe, Asia and Australia as an aircraft industry representative. He and his wife settled in North Carolina, relocating to Oregon in 2000 to be near their daughter.
   He enjoyed gardening and woodworking, and spent the past five years as a volunteer at the Evergreen Aviation Museum.
   He was preceded in death by his wife in 2002.
   Survivors include: daughter Jan Newhouse; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Doris M. Lee
   Doris Marie Lee died Feb. 14, 2007, at a local care home. She was 84.
   She was born Sept. 8, 1922, in California to Henry and Lorena (Rogers) Washabaugh. She attended school in Pismo Beach, Calif. In 1944 she married Hubert Lee in Yuma, Ariz. They later divorced.
   She lived in Vallejo, Calif., where she worked in the food service industry. In 1982, she moved to Eugene to be near her daughter and grandchildren.
   She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, crossword puzzles and dogs.
   Survivors include: daughter Linda Frazier of Tigard; son Jimmy Lee of Rohnert Park, Calif.; brother Bill Washabaugh of Placerville, Calif.; sister Ann Hall of Vallejo; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by sons Robert and Charles Lee and brother Cramer Washabaugh.

Clyde L. Payne
   Clyde Lewis Payne, a resident of the Newberg area, died Feb. 7, 2007, in Portland. He was 87.
   He was born Feb. 8, 1919, in Detroit Lake, Minn., to Pearl and Emily (Emmerson) Payne. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1937. He was a logger, a literature evangelist for the Oregon Conference, a lay pastor for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and a master gardener. He married Elizabeth Hart in 1958 in Portland.
   Survivors include: wife Elizabeth; daughter Judy Arnold; brothers, Earl of Tualatin and Jesse of Gaston; sisters, Thelma Winter of Happy Valley, Vadah Dunn of Oregon City and June Krause of Sherwood; and six grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by brothers Elvin and Cash.
   A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Newberg Seventh-day Adventist Church. Arrangements are in care of Bateman Carroll Funeral Home of Gresham.

Luella G. Chamberlain
   Luella Gail Chamberlain died Feb. 8, 2007. She was 86.
   She was born June 16, 1921, to William and Amy (Sherman) Heimstadt in Eau Claire, Wis. In 1939, she moved to Monterey, Calif. She married Walter Chamberlain on July 5, 1939. They lived in California, Wisconsin and, following her husband’s Air Force service during World War II, Chicago and Billings, Mont.
   They came to Oregon in 1948, living in Sheridan before buying the Corbett Acres farm near Willamina.
   They later lived in Eugene; Springfield; Sitka, Alaska; and Show Low, Ariz., where she worked as a bank teller and office manager for the Arizona Highway Department.
   They returned to Oregon in 1967, making their home in Newberg. She worked for NorPac, Ray Hopp Insurance and the Newberg School District.
   In 1980, they bought a winter home in Yuma, Ariz. Her husband Walter preceded her in death in 1989.
   She continued to live in Newberg, where she was a member of the Newberg Community Hospital Auxiliary, Newberg First Baptist Church and Order of the Eastern Star.
   She enjoyed reading, gardening, dancing, playing cards and singing with the group Sweet Adelines.
   In 1995, she married Robert Nelson after meeting him at a class reunion. They divided their time between Newberg and Wisconsin. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1998.
   Survivors include: husband Robert of Newberg; daughter Gail Chamberlain of Dundee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   Viewing and visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor Larry Smithwick officiating. Committal will follow at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Arthur P. Davidson
   Arthur Paul Davidson died Feb. 13, 2007. He was 93.
   He was born Jan. 30, 1914, in Charlotte, Mich., to James and Ulrica (Ottney) Davidson. He attended school in Michigan. As teenagers, he and one of his brothers traveled to Brookings and then to McMinnville.
   He married Marjorie Winters in September 1941. After three years, they moved to Dundee where they lived for 63 years.
   He worked as a bus driver with Greyhound Bus Lines for 30 years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed traveling to different states and countries and gardening at his home.
   His wife Marjorie preceded him in death in March 2006.
   Survivors include: son Roger of Tigard; daughter Loretta Hubbel of Newberg; brother James and sister Verlee, both of Michigan; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   A funeral service was held Monday at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor David Case officiating. A concluding service was held at Dundee Pioneer Cemetery.

John F. Smith
   John F. “Jack” Smith of St. Paul died Feb. 10, 2007 of heart failure. He was 82.
   He was born April 17, 1924, in Portland and grew up in St. Paul where he lived and worked as a farmer for most of his life.
   During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a motor machinist’s mate, stationed in Cherbourg, France.
In 1949, he married Lillian Melby and they raised three children. She preceded him in death in 1983. He married Lou Ann Baty in 1993.
   He was a member of the St. Paul Rodeo Association, the St. Paul Feed bowling league, the Cooperative Telephone Board and the St. Paul Mustangs.
   He also enjoyed hunting, playing cards, reading Western novels, enjoyed watching game shows and sports on television and was a fan of the Seattle Mariners.
He was preceded in death by sons John and Joseph, and by his brother Dave.
   Survivors include: his wife Lou Ann; daughters Julie Smith of Vancouver, B.C. and Joanne Cain of Woodburn; step-sons Dick and Jim Baty; step-daughters Marcia Makela, Marianne Pittard and Nancy Baty; brothers Jim and Sam of St. Paul; sister Jane Smith of Newberg; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   His funeral mass was held Feb. 14 in the St. Paul Catholic Church.

Loula M. Evans
   Loula M. Evans of Newberg died Feb. 10, 2007. She was 104.
   She was born Dec. 14, 1902, in Oroville, Calif. to Henry and Opal Sherrick Johnson.
   She grew up in Ft. Bragg, Calif., where she attended school. She married Noah Evans in 1922. The couple lived in San Francisco and Novato, Calif.
   In 1965, she moved to Dayton, later living in McMinnville. In 2001, she moved to Newberg.
   She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the McMinnville Grange. She enjoyed gardening, quilting and lace-making.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983, five brothers, one sister and a grandson.
   Survivors include: her son Donald Evans of Tigard; daughter Dorothy Smith of South Bend, Wash.; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
   Visitation is from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors in McMinnville.
   Her funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Newberg, with Rev. Karen Renner officiating.

Bruce D. Garvin, Sr.
   Bruce D. Garvin, Sr. died Feb. 9, 2007, at a local hospital. He was 70.
   He was born Aug. 28, 1936, in Salem to William and Mabel (Bryant) Garvin and grew up in Newberg.
   He graduated from Newberg High School in 1954, where he was a member of the wrestling and football teams, a band member and thespian.
   He moved to McMinnville in 1965. In 1969, he married Claudette Camp in Sheridan. In 1973 he moved to a farm near Sheridan, returning to McMinnville in 1993.
   He was a car salesman and dealership manager for 50 years, having worked for nearly every car dealership in Newberg and McMinnville during his career.
   He was a member of the National Guard, the McMinnville Elks and the Newberg Jaycees. He enjoyed horses, the beach, camping and his dogs.
   He was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Jr. in 1999, brother William Jr., sister Patricia Eder and one granddaughter.
   Survivors include: wife Claudette; sons Derek of McMinnville and Robert Beehner of Dallas, Ore.; daughters Deanne Schroeder and Deborah Gill of McMinnville and Darcy Moss of Battle Ground, Wash.; brother James of Carson City, Nev.; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   His funeral service was held Tuesday in the Lafayette Community Church, with Pastor Jim Peterson officiating.

Mary C. Martin
   Mary Cameron Martin died Jan. 27, 2007, at a local hospital. She was 85.
   She was born Aug. 14, 1921 in Methuen, Mass. to George and Gertrude (Walsh) Roode and grew up in New Hampshire, where she graduated high school.
   She married Peter Martin in 1941 and lived breifly in Europe while he served in the U.S. Army. After her husband left the service, they settled in Newberg in 1950.
   She worked at the Newberg U.S. Bank for 30 years, retiring in 1984.
   She collected owl decorations and enjoyed spending winters in Mexico following her retirement.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in 2001, and by her brother Alan Roode and sister Gertrude Kirkendal.
   Survivors include: mother Gertrude Lewis, 109, of Massachusetts; honorary son Panya Sawan of Walnut Creek, Calif.; and her friend and personal representative, Susan Ouellette of Newberg.

Edwin M. Wahl
   Edwin M. Wahl of Newberg died Feb. 10, 2007, of heart failure. He was 72.
   He was born March 28, 1934, to Gottlieb and Maggie Wahl in Twin Falls, Idaho, and moved to Newberg when he was 10-years-old.
   He attended Newberg schools until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951, serving until 1955. In 1955, he married Virginia Sprecher of Newberg.
   After being discharged, he worked in trucking and other jobs and joined First National Bank in 1963, eventually become manager of the Yamhill-Carlton branch. During that time, he foiled a bank robbery by disarming the perpetrator.
   In 1974 he opened Westside Automotive Supply in Newberg with his wife and brother- and sister-in-law Melvin and Joyce Sprecher. He sold the business in 1988. He continued to work as a salesman for Newberg Ford and retired in 1995.
   Survivors include: wife Virginia; daughters Pam Ward of Independence, Ore.; Connie Vann of Kasilof, Alaska and Teresa Clow of Black Diamond, Wash; and seven grandchildren.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg.

Edna M. Fortune
   Edna Mae Fortune of Newberg died Feb. 6, 2007, at a Tigard care home. She was 77.
   She was born May 26, 1929, in Newberg to Edward and Ann (Berhorst) Trunde and graduated from Newberg High School in 1947.
   In 1948 she married Daniel Fortune, Jr. and then worked at Tektronix in Wilsonville before she retired in 1994. Six years ago she moved Cedar Crest Alzheimer Special Care Center in Tualatin.
   She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and a den mother with the Cub Scouts. She enjoyed baking, gardening, crafts and trips to the beach.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in 1974; by her son Thomas and sister Dorothy Edwards.
   Survivors include: sons Greg of Milwaukie, David of Portland, Gary of Corona, Calif., Timothy of Wilsonville and Kevin of Newberg; daughters Nancy Ellis of Carson, Wash., Janis Fortune of Newberg and Kathy Clark of Vancouver, Wash.; brothers Steve Trunde of Lafayette and Jim Trunde of Woodburn; sisters Lucille Wilkins of Portland and Linda Carlson of Oregon City; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Roland L. Brookens
   Roland L. “Buz” Brookens died Feb. 3, 2007 in Sherwood. He was 83.
   He was born May 12, 1923, in Bellingham, Wash. to George and Dorothea (Dahnke) Brookens.
   He left school in the ninth grade, worked in the restaurant industry and by age 18 he became a portrait photographer.
   He married Jardis Rotluff in 1941 in Corvallis.
   He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, earning the rank of second lieutenant and continuing his education. He was discharged in 1945, having been stationed in Nebraska and California.
   In 1956, he joined Tektronix, and retired as a draftsman checker in 1983.
   He was a member of the Lutheran Church and Sherwood Bible Fellowship. He enjoyed photography and was an amateur inventor.
   Survivors include: wife Jardis of Tigard; sons Dennis of Hillsboro and Bruce of Sherwood; daughters Carol Rohlfing of Lincoln City and Janice Klein of Newberg; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   His memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at the Sherwood Bible Fellowship, at the corner of Pine and Sunset in Sherwood. Internment will be in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Stephen W. Johnson
   Stephen Wayne Johnson, formerly of Newberg, died Feb. 2, 2007, of complications from a heart attack. He was 54.
   He was born Oct. 1, 1952, in Tillamook to Anthony and Margie (Dwyer) Johnson. He attended school in Beaverton, Hillsboro, Newport and Newberg and was a Tillamook High School graduate, where he accepted the Tom McCall Governor’s Award.
   He was a student-athlete and played football, basketball and baseball in high school, earning a baseball scholarship to Mt. Hood Community College, and later Oregon State University. He was a starting pitcher for the Beavers in the early 1970’s and played semipro ball in the summers.
   He graduated Oregon State University in 1975 with a degree in business administration. He worked as an accountant for several years, before entering the construction industry. In 1983, he co-founded Omni Electric, which became one of Portland’s largest electric construction firms.
   In 1998 he began working at Vancouver Oil Company, and was named president in 2005. He also served as treasurer of the Oregon Petroleum Association, a board member of the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America (SIGMA) and a member and past president (1996) of Associated General Contractors.
   He married Carol Stevens of Lake Oswego in 1975 and raised two sons. They divorced in 1993. He married Linda Pearson in 2001.
   In his spare time, he enjoyed racquetball, basketball, traveling, dancing and motorcycle riding. He was an active youth sports coach for many years and a fan of the OSU Beavers.
   Survivors include: wife Linda; sons Alex of Denver, Colo. and Nicholas of Bend; stepsons Chris and Kevin Pearson of Lake Oswego; brothers Jim of Newberg, Jerry, Mick and Bob, all of Hillsboro; sisters Kathleen Johnson of Tualatin, Brenda Lemmon of Otis and Linda Lohmann of Hubbard and mother Margie Johnson of Lincoln City.

Glenn D. Compton
   Glenn Dale Compton of Newberg died at his home on Jan. 31, 2007. He was 62.
   He was born Oct. 1, 1944 in Vancouver, Wash. to Dale and Myrtle (Edwards) Compton. His family moved to Newberg when he was 10 years old. He attended Newberg schools and graduated from Newberg High School.
   He married Marie Henselman in Newberg in 1964.
   He worked for his father at Compton Nut Company, then started his own scrap-metal business in 1965 and retired in 2002.
   He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church and the Elks Lodge No. 2342 in Sherwood. He enjoyed fishing, camping, auctions and cooking.
   Survivors include: wife Marie; sons Kenneth and Jerry of Newberg; brothers David of Renton, Wash. and Daniel of
Newberg.

   Helen Elaine Renner of Newberg died at a local care center on Jan. 7, 2007. She was 90.
   She was born Nov. 28, 1916, in Spokane, Wash. to Lewis and Laurel (Spooner) Merager.
   She married George Renner in 1956.
   She was a homemaker and Avon representative, and helped her husband run a small farm in Newberg.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in 2006.
   Survivors include her cousins, nieces and nephews.


Nellie Winters

   Nellie Winters of Newberg died Feb. 1, 2007. She was 82.
   She was born Sept. 16, 1924, in Deer Lodge, Mont., to Marcus and Marion West. The family moved to Portland when she was 2 years old.
   She attended Portland public schools and then attended Benke Walker Business College in Portland, where she met her future husband Dale Winters. They married in 1946 and moved to the Newberg area.
   She worked as a secretary for Allen Fruit Company, Portland Community College, Newberg First Baptist Church, Chehalem Valley Mental Health and George Fox University.
   She enjoyed cooking, bowling, golf, pinochle and dancing. She and her husband also enjoyed camping and travelling together.
   She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Bud and Lawrence.
   Survivors include: husband Dale; sons Jason and Alan; daughter Suzi Schmidlkofer; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Zilpha M. Heater
   Newberg resident Zilpha May Heater died Jan. 24, 2007, at Providence Newberg Medical Center. She was 95.
   She was born Aug. 16, 1911, in Mt. Vernon to Charles and Gladys (Moore) Jenkins. She grew up in the John Day area, graduating from John Day High School in 1930. She moved with her family to McMinnville, where she worked for R.C. Moseley promoting The Big White Popcorn Wagon.
   She married Russ Heater on July 6, 1941. Beginning in the early 1950s, she worked as a cook for Springbrook School and Dundee Elementary, retiring in the 1970s.
She enjoyed tent camping, gardening and reading.
   Survivors include: son Russell of Newberg; daughters, Dianne Heater-Wilson of Oceanside, Calif., and Rebecca Capell of Newberg; brother Claud Jenkins of Amity; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983, by sisters Rosella McKenzie and Violet Hay, and brothers John and Homer Jenkins.

Retha B. Bjonirud
   Retha Beatrice Bjonirud of Newberg died on Jan. 28, 2007. She was 93.
   She was born Sept. 27, 1913, in Newberg to Orpheous and Effie (Wood) Hutchens. She graduated from Newberg High School in 1931. She attended beauty school and worked as a telephone operator and supervisor at Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone. She married Hans Bjonirud on Nov. 8, 1941.
   She was a charter member of the Gloria Dei Church and the Church Women United. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking and traveling.
   Survivors include: Bill and Barbara Hutchens of Newberg; niece Beverly Gibson of Beaverton; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband.
   A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 402 Crawford St., Kelso, Wash. Arrangements are in care of the Dahl-McVicker Funeral Home.

Leverett N. Miller
   Leverett Nathaniel “Bud” Miller, who has family in Sherwood, died Jan. 27, 2007, at St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash. He was 83.
   He was born Sept. 9, 1923, in Waterbury, Conn. He graduated from Leavenworth High School. During World War II he was stationed in Italy as a member of the U.S. Army. After returning to the U.S., he served in the Connecticut National Guard.
   In 1946, he married Helen Dinsmore and the couple moved to Alaska, where they lived for the next 60 years.  He worked on the Alaska Railroad and in logistics for the Federal Aviation Administration, retiring in 1983.
   He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gold panning, marathon running and city league ice hockey.
   Survivors include: wife Helen of College Place, Wash.; sister Marcia Fray of Connecticut; sons, Leverett of Sherwood, William of Linden, Wash., and Richard of College Place; daughters, Janet Moore of College Place and Rebekah Daniel of Port Angeles, Wash.; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
   A graveside service was held Feb. 2 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Sharon L. Barlow
   Sharon Lenora Barlow, formerly of McMinnville, died Jan. 27, 2007, in Choteau, Mont. She was 64.
   She was born Aug. 4, 1942, in McMinnville to Melvin and Gladys (Powers) Bench. She was a homemaker and a member of the New Song Assembly of God Church in Montana.
   Survivors include: her companion of 19 years, Bob Miley; sons, Scott of Crooked River Ranch and Denny of Choteau; sister Kathleen Bowman of Sacramento; four grandchildren and two nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John Bench.

Joanne E. Labrousse
   Joanne Elinor Labrousse of Sherwood died Jan. 24, 2007. She was 77.
   She was born Feb. 14, 1929, in Chehalis, Wash., to John and Leona (Hahn) Meissinger. She came to Sherwood in 1940, where her father was pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church. She graduated from Sherwood High School and married Maurice Labrousse on June 3, 1951. The couple resided in Albany and Salem before returning to Sherwood 15 years ago.
   In addition to eight children of her own, she cared for more than 200 foster children over 21 years for the state of Oregon, and was recognized for her work by former Gov. Vic Atiyeh.
   She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Foster Parents Association. She enjoyed arts and crafts.
   Survivors include: husband Maurice of Sherwood; sons, Tim of Ontario and Randy of Keizer; daughters, Julie Zetterberg of Portland, Pam Lawrence of Dallas, Rene Ketchum of Chehalis, Amy Evans of Salem, Nanci Klein of Pendleton and Rachel Labrousse of Clackamas; sisters, Judy Ferry of Sherwood, Ruth Peters of Newberg and Cathy Snyder of Sherwood; 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Brenda J. Long
   Brenda Jean Long, formerly of Newberg, died Jan. 25, 2007, of cancer at her home in Clackamas. She was 65.
   She was born Jan. 7, 1942, in Beatrice, Neb., to Charles and Mary (Green) Bloodgood. She attended George Fox University. She married Jerry Long on May 2, 1963. She worked for 41 years as a missionary with Wycliffe Bible Translators.
   Survivors include: husband Jerry of Clackamas; son Daniel; daughter Lori Clark; and three grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Clock, in 1980.
   A private memorial service was held Jan. 3 at Trinity  Evangelical Church in Tigard.

William P. Rosacker
   William Paul Rosacker Sr. of Newberg died Jan. 17, 2007. He was 80.
   He was born Feb. 10, 1926, in Nebraska to William and Mary Rosacker. He moved to Oregon as a young man. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged. After a brief residence in Tigard, he moved to Newberg in 1965.
   He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the local Elks Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, farming and the outdoors.
   Survivors include: sons, William Jr. and James of Newberg; daughter Mary Ann Scholz of Newberg; and eight grandchildren.
   He was buried with honors in a private service at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Mary J. Meyers-Collins
   Former Sherwood resident Mary Joanne Meyers-Collins died Jan. 16, 2007, at her home in Manning. She was 54.
   She was born Oct. 8, 1952, in Portland to Robert and Adelle (Huston) Meyers. She went to school in Sherwood and attended Portland Community College. She married Gary Cerghino on Feb. 28, 1971. They made their home in Sherwood, but later divorced. She married Gary Collins on July 1, 1995, and settled in Manning.
   She worked for Sun Music Company for many years, later becoming a homemaker.
   Survivors include: husband Gary of Manning; parents, Adelle of Newberg and Robert of Crooked River Ranch; daughter Renee Meyers of Manning; brother Robert Meyers of Salem; sisters, Debbie Henson of Boring and Sandy Crawford of Sherwood; and one grandson.
   A memorial service was held Jan. 23 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with pastor Tom Struck officiating.

Darlene E. Vickery
   Darlene Edith Vickery died Jan. 21, 2007, at her Newberg home. She was 63.
   She was born March 10, 1943, in Portland to Clarence and Edith (Chapman) Eggimann. She graduated from Tigard High School in 1961. She worked at an insurance agency before marrying George Vickery on March 11, 1966. After raising her children she returned to work in 1982 as a baker at Old Oak Table Deli and Lunch Box Deli of Tigard.
   She was a past member of the Methodist Church in Tigard. She enjoyed camping and spending time with her grandchildren.
   Survivors include: husband George of Newberg; daughters, Annette Kramer and Lorraine Malapit, both of Newberg; sisters, Patty Tracy and Beverly Hess; and four grandchildren.

Paul G. Jahnke
   Dr. Paul Gene Jahnke of Newberg died Jan 19, 2007. He was 73.
   He was born July 17, 1933, in Harlan, Iowa, to John and Willa (Scott) Jahnke. He attended Dana College in Blair, Neb. He continued his education at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn., Memphis State University and Southwestern University. He married Martha Ann Compton on Oct. 29, 1955.
   In 1962, he graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and completed his residency there in 1967. He taught ophthalmology at the University of Texas Hospital in Galveston. He moved to McMinnville in 1969 and established a private practice, where he worked until his retirement in 1995. From 1980-85 he also attended Western Conservative Baptist Seminary, where he earned a doctorate in Christian leadership.
   He was active in many professional and civic groups, including the Oregon Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the American College of Surgeons. He served as president of the Yamhill County Medical Association, the McMinnville Chamber of Commerce and Rotary, Yamhill County Little Singers and the Gallery Theater group. He was a director of Michelbook Country Club and served on the board of trustees for Linfield College, where he served as chairman of the physical plant committee.
   He also served as chairman of the board of First Federal and as moderator of the Northwestern Conservative Baptist Association. He worked as a medical missionary in Mexico, providing surgical services to the poor.
   Survivors include: wife Martha of Newberg; sons, Jonathan of Carlton and Jeffrey of Milwaukee, Wis.; daughters, Scotty Dolence of McMinnville and Paula Grow of Lakewood, Wash.; and 12 grandchildren.

Ivan Pennington
   Ivan Victor Pennington of Newberg died Jan. 19, 2007. He was 85.
   He was born Feb. 19, 1921, in Payette, Idaho, to George and Dora (Linebarger) Pennington. He was raised in Vale and Ontario, where he worked in a hardware store. He married Iva Gerard in the early 1940s; they later divorced. He married Helen Rose of Ontario on March 22, 1948.
   He worked as a police officer for various cities throughout Oregon and Idaho, serving as chief of police in Florence.
   The couple moved to Lafayette in 1963, where they owned and operated the Open Pit Steakhouse Restaurant. He also worked for Garrett Freight Line in Portland and opened Ivan’s Gun Shop in Newberg.
   They lived in Newberg from 1968 to 1980, returned to Lafayette before moving to McMinnville in 1986, then returned to Newberg in 2003.
   He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gunsmithing and woodworking. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Fraternity and held a private pilot’s license.
   Survivors include: wife Helen of Newberg; sons, Gary of Richland, Wash., and Duane of Weiser, Idaho; daughter Carol Blanchard of Newberg; sister Helen Rogers of Payette; 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by daughter Paula McGanty in 2003; brothers Leslie and John; and sisters Bernice Hainline, Lucille Huber, Marie Pennington and Iva Pennington.

Shirley Kinkade
   Newberg native Shirley Ann Kinkade of Brookings died Jan. 15, 2007, at Oregon Health and Sciences University Hospital in Portland. She was 71.
   She was born July 12, 1935, to Curtis and Verna (Dressel) Martin of Newberg. She grew up in the Newberg area. In 1951, she married Glen Canfield of Newberg. She remarried twice, to Berle Stonebrink in 1956, and Ronald Kinkade in 1966.
   She owned and operated the “Shape Up Tone & Tan” salon in Brookings. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and solitaire, and was a member of the Brookings Elks Lodge.
   Survivors include: brothers, Curtis Martin of Salem and Larry Martin of Beaverton; sons, Scott Canfield of Newberg and Loren Stonebrink of Brookings; daughters, Paula McKeen of Lebanon and Pamela Ornduff of Brookings; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by son Gary Stonebrink in 1991, and her third husband Ron Kinkade in 1998.
   Memorial services are being planned in Newberg and Brookings.

Amelia Schneider
   Amelia “Millie” Schneider died Jan. 14, 2007, at Chehalem Health and Rehabilitation in Newberg. She was 88.
   She was born Oct. 22, 1918, in Milwaukee, Wisc., to David and Elizabeth (Kaiser) Wagner. She moved with her family to Oregon in the early 1930s. She worked at New System Portland Laundry. She married Joe Schneider on March 19, 1938. They came to Newberg in 1952, when they purchased Newberg Garbage and Recycling Service from her parents.
   She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, the Parent-Teacher Association and the Business and Professional Women’s association. She enjoyed cooking and sewing and was a fan of the TV series “I Love Lucy.”
   Survivors include: sons, Alan of Bunker Hill, Va., and Marvin of Newberg; daughters, Joanne Goehner of Dundee and Carol Smith of Malta, Mont.; sisters, Ruth Flud and Katie LaJoie of Newberg; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995, brother Jacob Wagner, sisters Lydia Black and Mary Wendt, and grandson Jeff Schneider.

Rebecca A. Morrow
   Rebecca Ann “Becky” Morrow died Jan. 12, 2007, in a car accident. She was 21.
   She was born March 6, 1985, in Portland to Mark and Cynthia (Martinez) Morrow. She grew up in St. Paul, attending St. Paul Grade School and Newberg High School. She became a certified pharmacy technician and worked at Walgreen’s in Oregon City.
   She was a former member of the NHS school choir and enjoyed reading and watching movies.

Arthur D. Hay
   Former Newberg resident Arthur David Hay died of natural causes on Jan. 13, 2006, in Brush Prairie, Wash. He was 74.
   He was born Oct. 2, 1932, in Glasgow, Scotland, and resided in Oregon from 1971 to 1998. He worked as a restaurateur, primarily self-employed.
   He married Joan Say in 1957. They moved to Washington state in 1998.
   Survivors include: wife Joan of Brush Prairie; sons, Gary and Scott; daughter Sandie; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Karen K. Linke
   Karen Kay Linke of Dayton died Jan. 16, 2007. She was 66.
   She was born Dec. 19, 1940, in Beatrice, Neb., to Phillip and Mary (McKernen) Moser. She grew up in Nebraska. She married Delano Linke on May 3, 1972. The couple moved to Dayton in 1981, where they operated Delano Supply. The couple adopted three children
   She enjoyed country music and collecting dolls.
   Survivors include: husband Delano of Dayton; sister Phyllis Kechley of Nebraska; sons, Bill Moser and Pat and Chris Linke of Omaha, Todd Heineman of Columbus, Neb., and Randy Linke of Banks; daughters, Kimberly Thomas of Kansas City, Mo., Marcy Linke of Nebraska and Rhonda Larrison of Enterprise; 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her children Benny, Pam and Marty; and 13 siblings.

Ella Fletcher
   Ella L. Fletcher of Newberg died Jan. 13, 2007, at a local care home. She was 86.
   She was born Sept. 26, 1920, to Edward and Janet (Symington) Pack in Beaver Lodge, Alberta, Canada. She moved with her family to Neche, N.D., when she was a child. She graduated from Neche High School in 1937. The family spent winters in Newberg, moving here permanently in 1942.
   She married Frank Fletcher in 1942 in Newberg. The couple moved to St. Paul in 1950. She worked for GAF, retiring in 1983, at which time she and her husband began spending their winters in Mesa, Ariz.
   She became a member of the St. Paul Rodeo Association in 1950. She was also a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and the Sherwood Elks Lodge.
   She enjoyed gardening, especially roses, geraniums and hydrangeas.
   Survivors include: son, William of Reno; daughter Patricia Stone of Glendale, Ariz.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   She was preceded in death by her husband Frank in 2000, and by her brother Russ Pack and her parents.
   A rosary vigil service was held Monday at St. Paul Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial was Tuesday at the church.

Karl Alteneder
   Karl J. Alteneder of Newberg died Jan. 12, 2007. He was 83.
   He was born in 1924 in Orofino, Idaho, to Frank and Aleta Alteneder. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific.
   He married Donna in 1947. They settled in Portland in 1950, and he began a career in the lumber industry, living at various times in Seaside, Tillamook, Springfield and Sequim, Wash. His wife preceded him in death.
   He retired to Newberg in 1987. He was a member of Newberg Friends Church, where he served as head usher.
   He served on numerous boards, including those of the Western Evangelical Seminary, Friendsview Manor and the Friends Cemetery Committee. He was also a member of Kiwanis, and a 55-year member of Gideons International, where he held local and state offices.
   He enjoyed organic gardening and fishing.
   Survivors include: wife of eight months Ardys of Newberg; sons, Dave and Randy; daughters, Sherry Mercer, Susan Skyberg and Kathie Thompson; sister Myrna Grasser; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Newberg Friends Church.

Darcy E. Muller
   Darcy Elaine Muller died of a rare heart defect on Jan. 8, 2007 at Meridian Park Hospital. She was 11.
   She was born Jan. 14, 1995, in Heidelberg, Germany, to Doug and Jan (Palmer) Muller. She and her family came to the U.S. in 1997, making their home in Sherwood.
   She attended Hopkins Elementary and Sherwood Middle schools. She played the trumpet and piano, and enjoyed soccer, lacrosse, volleyball and riding horses.
   Survivors include: parents Doug and Jan of Sherwood; brother Stuart of Sherwood; grandparents, Margie and Charlie Palmer of Tigard and George and Joyce Muller of Corvallis.
   A funeral service was held Jan. 13 at Mount Home United Methodist Church in Sherwood. Private committal was at Gibbs Cemetery in Sherwood.

Jacque Parsons
   Jacque “Jack” Parsons of Sherwood died Jan. 10, 2007. He was 73.
   He was born Nov. 26, 1934, in Canaan Valley, W. Va., to Cecil and Sadie (Cooper) Parsons. He graduated from West Virginia University and earned a master’s degree in horticulture from the University of Maryland.
   He was employed by Oregon State University as an extension agent for 25 years. During that time, he helped promote innovative production of fruits and vegetables.
He married Jennifer Newth of West Linn in 2003.
   After retiring, he farmed to supply roadside fruit stands throughout the tri-county area.
   He enjoyed travel, western movies and spending time at his vacation home in Astoria.
   Survivors include: wife Jennifer of Sherwood; sister Sharon of West Virginia; sons, Michael of Portland, Timothy of Dayton and Cliff of Canby; stepchildren Marshall Martell, Jacob Curtis and Jenessa Roberti; and seven grandchildren.

Mabel E. Walters
   Former Newberg resident Mabel E. Walters of Beaverton died Jan. 8, 2007. She was 83.
   She was born May 12, 1923, in West Union and graduated from Beaverton High School. She attended business college in Portland. She married Harry Walters in 1941; they settled in Newberg in 1949. She worked as a secretary at Newberg High School, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
   She enjoyed playing bridge, travel and spending time with family.
   Survivors include: daughters, Norma Lee Aragaki of Newberg, Linda Campbell of Portland and Melanie Walters of Alpharetta, Ga.; brother Bill Kent of Apache Junction, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, in 2001.
   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 17 at Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg.

Dorothy M. Ward
   Dorothy May Ward died Jan. 10, 2007, in her Dundee home. She was 95.
   She was born July 15, 1911, in Bell Fountain to Francis and Margaret (Gardener) Brittain. She attended Alpine High School. She married Jesse Bales in 1927. He preceded her in death in 1982. She married Robert Ward in 1983; he preceded her in death in 1999.
    She worked for the U.S. Forest Service and as a store owner. She was a Girl Scout and 4-H leader.
   Survivors include: grandson David Bales of Carrollton, Texas; granddaughters, Karen Benham of Dayton and Paula Cathers and Julie Ponder, both of Dundee; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by sons Leland Bales in 1999 and William Bales in 2004.
   A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday at Newberg Friends Church.

Dorris O. Jiosa
   Dorris Ozell Jiosa died Jan. 7, 2007. She was 81.
She was born July 25, 1925, in Crossett, Ark., to Howard and Elsie May (Brooks) Harrod. She grew up in Little Rock. She later moved to Southern California where she married Michael Jiosa on June 24, 1955. The couple moved to Oregon in 1969 and made their home in Newberg.
   She enjoyed puzzles, cards, games, baseball, basketball and was a frequent attendee at her grandchildren’s sporting events.
   Survivors include: brothers, James Harrod of Montrose, Calif., and Jesse Harrod of Redlands, Calif.; sons, Rick and Robert of Newberg; daughters, Dori Vorisek and Pam Chapman of Newberg; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   She was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Sledd, two brothers, and by her husband Michael in 1985.
   A funeral service was held Jan. 12 at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel with pastor David Case officiating. Private committal was held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Charles M. House
   Charles Milford House of Newberg died Jan. 3, 2007, of complications from a stroke. He was 79.
   He was born March 23, 1927, in Arcadia, Calif., to Jewell and Hazel (Van Huss) House. He attended Pacific College (now George Fox University). He married Esther Pierson on Sept. 12, 1948. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan. He later went into business as a laundry and dry-cleaning owner and as a construction and home repair contractor.
   He was a member of the Newberg First Baptist Church, past president of the Oregon Dry Cleaners Association and the Crestview Estates Homeowners Association, and a volunteer with the Bible Foundation of Newberg.
   He participated in several short-term missions to Honduras through World Gospel Mission. He enjoyed hiking, gardening and fishing.
   Survivors include: son Roger of Kapolei, Hawaii; daughters, Glenda Gilroy of Dundee and LaDonna Moore of Redmond; sister Rowene House of Meridian, Idaho; brother Dean of Shell Beach, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his wife Esther in October 2002; sister Georgia Weaver in 1993; and granddaughter Tanya House in 2006.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 12 at Newberg First Baptist Church. A private burial will be held at Newberg Friends Cemetery.

Ramon L. Akins
   Former Newberg resident Ramon Lloyd “Ray” Akins of Eugene died Dec. 16, 2006, of heart failure at his winter home in Hermosillo, Mexico. He was 71.
   He was born Nov. 20, 1935, in Cushing, Okla., to Arthur and Winnie (Ferris) Akins. He attended school in Newberg and served 10 years with the U.S. Coast Guard. He worked as an independent trucking contractor. He married Evelyn Pimental in 1972. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Eagles.
   Survivors include: wife Evelyn of Eugene; sons, Byron of Hillsboro and Kevin of Redmond; daughter Sharon of Lincoln City; stepsons, Carl and David Pimental of Springfield; stepdaughter Diane Johnson of Salem; mother Winnie Love of Newberg; and 13 grandchildren.
   At his request, Akins was cremated and his ashes scattered at sea. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Perla Hunter
   Perla Esmerelda Esparza Hunter died Dec. 25, 2006, at Doernbechers Children’s Hospital. She was 8-years-old.
“Esmy” to friends and family, she died of complications of Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency, a rare metabolic disorder.
   Before becoming ill, she led the life of an active third-grade student and enjoyed reading, drawing, swimming and helping with family projects.
   Survivors include: mother Laurie Hunter of Newberg; brother Jeffrey of Newberg; grandparents, Dave and Fran Hunter of Newberg; Uncle John; Aunt Laura; and four cousins of Liberty Lake, Wash. She was adopted, and is also survived by her birth mother, brother, two sisters and grandparents.
   The family will conduct a private memorial service.

D. Wayne Piersall
   Donald Wayne Piersall died Jan. 5, 2006, in Newberg. He was 80.
   He was born July 11, 1926, in Lincoln, Neb., to Dewey and Nora (Emry) Piersall. He served from 1944 to 1946 in the U.S. Navy. He married Willa Corine Hurst in December 1946 in Greenleaf, Idaho, and graduated from George Fox University in 1951.
   After the death of his first wife in 1998, he married Norma Beebe of Eugene in 1999. She preceded him in death in 2003. He married Evelyn Withrow of Newberg in 2005.
   He worked for the U.S. Postal Service, but also had a 57-year career as pastor for many churches in the region through the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends. He was also a volunteer firefighter and a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
   Survivors include: wife Evelyn of Newberg; son Don; daughters, Sharyl Peterson, Dreana Purington and Janice Carney; sisters, Wilma Camilleri and Doris Parker; 10 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, as well as members of the Beebe and Withrow families.
   He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Samuel and Jerry Piersall.
   A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Newberg Friends Church. A memorial service and burial will be held Jan. 12 in the Meridian Friends Church of Meridian, Idaho.

Aaron Turley
   Aaron “Bob” Turley of Newberg died Jan. 4, 2007. He was 85.
   He was born July 13, 1921, in Phoenix, Ariz., to Aaron and Stella (Mecey) Turley. He married Beatrice Patterson in 1942 in Arizona. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as an electrician’s mate. After his discharge, he settled in Waldport, where he worked as a construction electrician until retiring in 1986. The couple moved to Newberg in 2006.
   He was a member of the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) for 60 years and a member and past grand master of the Waldport Masonic Lodge.
   Survivors include: wife Beatrice of Newberg; daughters, Susan Alvidrez of Newberg and Sharon Clow of McMinnville; sister Martha Weesner of Burbank, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by a sister, Dora Pauline Tapp.
   He was buried in a private ceremony at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Kenneth W. Murphy
   Former Newberg resident Kenneth Wayne Murphy died Dec. 26, 2006, in Detroit, Mich., of congestive heart failure. He was 58.
   He was born Aug. 21, 1948, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to Waldo and Ann (Sanger) Murphy. He moved to Oregon with his family as a young man. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, stationed in Germany and worked as a truck driver.
   He married Marie Perlongo in 1967. They divorced and he married Audry Ayers in 1974. They also divorced.
He moved to Detroit in 2005 to be near his daughter, Cheryl.
    Survivors include: daughters, Cheryl Murphy of Taylor, Mich., and Kimberly Simpson of Las Vegas; father Waldo “Bill” Murphy of Newberg; stepmother Dorothy Murphy of Newberg; sisters, Gwen Armstrong of Canada and Kathy Vigil of Gladstone; stepbrother Eugene Strohman of Newberg; stepsister Karen Miller of San Diego; and four grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his mother, Ann Sanger Park.
Private family services have been scheduled.

Yvonne M. White
   Former Newberg resident Yvonne Marie White of Woodburn died Jan. 5, 2007. She was 88.
   She was born Jan. 29, 1918, in Waterville, Kan., to George and Pearl Hermann. She was crowned princess of the Newberg Berrians in 1938 and became the official chaperon for the Miss Oregon contestants in the Miss America pageants from 1962-65. She married Avery Combs in 1938. He preceded her in death in 1966. She married Joseph White in September 1968 in Eugene.
   She was a painter who published and sold many of her works. She was a member of the Christian Church. She lived for several years in John Day before moving to Woodburn in the 1980s.
  Survivors include: sons, Douglas Combs of Portland and Bruce Combs of Bend; stepsons, Thomas White of Mt. Vernon, Wash., and Steve White of LaGrande; stepdaughters, Beckie Hughes of Hillsboro and Mary Ann Pogany of Tucson, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her second husband, Joseph White, in 2003.
   A service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel, 1050 N. Boones Ferry Road, Woodburn. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Willamette National Cemetery.
   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Keizer Senior Center in Keizer.

Patricia M. Chaffee
   Patricia Mary Chaffee died Dec. 29, 2006, in McMinnville. She was 70.
   She was born Oct. 9, 1936, in Los Angeles, the daughter of Victor Bruno. She grew up in the Los Angeles area. She married Charles Chaffee in 1953 in Orange, Calif. In 1976, she moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, returning to Oregon in 1986. She settled in Newberg in 1988, and moved to McMinnville in 1992.
   She worked as a switchboard operator for Yamhill County and in the McMinnville office of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
   She enjoyed crocheting, camping and raising German shepherd dogs.
   Survivors include: son Chuck of Pendleton; daughters, Debbie Redfearn of Newberg, Lorie of McMinnville, Susie Yager and Stacy Bohl, both of Springfield; and seven grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Cowles, and by her husband Charles in 1994.
   A funeral service was held Jan. 4 at the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors in McMinnville. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Covina, Calif.

George H. Baughman
   George Herbert Baughman of Dundee died Dec. 28, 2006. He was 73.
   He was born Sept. 25, 1933, in Clinton, Iowa, to Floyd and Violet Baughman. He served in the U.S. Navy and had a career as a sheet metal worker.
   He enjoyed building and operating small airplanes and antique cars, especially World War II-vintage Jeeps.
   No funeral services have been scheduled. Arrangements are in care of Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Home.

Joan P. Ingram
   Joan P. Ingram died Dec. 29, 2006, at her Sherwood home. She was 68.
   She was born Feb. 2, 1938, in Racine, Wisc., to Val and Elizabeth (Parr) Geiser. Her family moved to Texas, where she graduated from Nocoma High School and North Texas State College at Denton. She worked for the U.S. Air Force. She married Garren Ingram in 1961. They moved to Sherwood in 1964; they divorced in 1976.
   She worked as a claims adjuster for the Social Security Administration in Portland until her retirement in 2003.
She enjoyed photography and pets.
   Survivors include: son Dayne of Sherwood; daughters, Valerie Kirkendall of Wilsonville, Demaree Ingram of Beaverton, Nancy Murphy of Inola, Okla., and Laura Burnell of Purcell, Okla.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held Jan. 3 at Attrell’s Sherwood Funeral Chapel.

Wilma G. Matthews
   Wilma “Billie” Grace Matthews died Dec. 29, 2006, at her Newberg home. She was 74.
   She was born May 28, 1932, in Spokane to Albert and Laura Mae (Wright) Mildes. She graduated from Everett High School in Everett, Wash. Her family moved to Colorado. She married Donald Matthews in 1954 in Denver. In 1956, they moved to Oregon, settling in Newberg in 1963.
   She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Newberg, and active in community service through that church’s Dorcas Group. She also enjoyed camping, needlework and crosswords.
   Survivors include: husband Donald of Newberg; daughter Laura Young of Dallas; son Ronald of Hepner; and four grandchildren.
   Visitation is from 9 to 11:30 a.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) in the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Newberg with Pastor Tim Mayne officiating. Committal will follow at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Richard Koskela
   Richard Koskela of Donald died Dec. 25, 2006, at Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin. He was 63.
   He was born Aug. 31, 1943, in Duluth, Minn., to William and Lillian (Mattila) Koskela. He moved to Oregon in 1950 and attended high school in Donald. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1962. Following his discharge, he married Valerie Palmer in 1966 in Vancouver, Wash. He worked for the Oroweat bakery in Beaverton for several years, before turning to the concrete trade. As a member of the Clackamas County Road Crew, he served as a supervisor for 20 years, retiring in 2005.
   He served as a volunteer with the Donald Fire Department for 15 years.
   He enjoyed fishing, crabbing, boating, camping, hot rods, motorcycle racing and four-wheeling.
   Survivors include: wife Valerie of Donald; daughter Marcy Walker of Donald; stepsons, Rocky Trinklein of Boardman and Billy Trinklein of Wilsonville; stepdaughters, Shelley Landon of Hubbard and Karen Landon of Canby; brother William of Canby; sisters, Janet Hamel of Newberg, Mariann Byers of Winston, Alica Endicott of Colton, Barbara Morris of Colquet, Minn., Darlene Miller of Hubbard and Terri Milholm of Lake Oswego; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by daughter Angela, brother Floyd and sister Susan Stacey.
   A memorial reception will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Donald Fire Hall with Pastor Jim Peterson officiating. A private family burial will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park.

Daryle L. Martin
   Daryle Leroy Martin died Dec. 14, 2006, at his Newberg home. He was 72.
   He was born Dec. 14, 1934, in Bainville, Mont., to Rodel and Margaret (Hodgins) Martin. He grew up in Salem. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952, serving in Korea and Vietnam as a gunner’s mate. He was discharged in 1973. He married Eileen Bryan in 1971. After leaving the Navy, he went to work for the U.S. Post Office in San Diego, retiring in 1995.
   He was a member of the VFW Post in San Diego and the American Legion.
   Survivors include: wife Eileen of Newberg; stepchildren Randall Bryan and Roberta Macones; sisters, Lois Johnson of Keizer and Jean Koenig of Ohio; and four grandchildren.
He was proceeded in death by a brother.
   A private service will be held. Arrangements are in care of Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel.
