A.R.E., Climax lauded in April

Helping youth -- 2009 Partners in Education Awards meted at annual Chamber of Commerce banquet

May 05, 2009

Newberg Public Schools recognized A.R.E. Manufacturing and Climax Portable Machine Tools with their "Partners in Education" award at the Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce banquet in early April.

The awards are given annually to Newberg businesses who provide exceptional contributions to education.

The two companies provide opportunities for young people through summer internship programs that allow students an opportunity to sample a career, learn marketable skills and apply their classroom learning. Students have held internship positions at Climax for several years. The internship experience goes beyond work on the shop floor to include community outreach and business classes.

For more than 20 years A.R. E. Manufacturing has hired manufacturing interns through local high schools. Students perform the same tasks any other employee: they work in the machine shop, learn how to setup and operate CNC mills and lathes, perform detailed inspections on machined components, and communicate and resolve problems with the quality department. A.R.E also offers internships in the shipping and receiving, accounting and manufacturing engineering departments.

Today, several NHS grads who are former interns, are employed at both companies and continue the legacy through their service as members of the advisory board for the NHS manufacturing program.

This summer A.R.E. is partnering with Climax to offer a broader intern experience. Students will still have their job-specific work experience, plus attend a series of workshops to further develop employee skills, including Lean Manufacturing, business and personal finance, interview and job search skills, first-aid, understanding insurance and benefits and more. Students will earn school credit for their participation as well.
